Old school motel that has everything you need. Location is good. We were here to fish. Boat dockage included in the room. Room....though older it still has charm. The bed linens are nice...not thin and worn. The towels are adequate and plentiful. The room is very clean and there are no maintenance issues. Plenty of hot water. Coffee served each morning at the tiki hut. Several breakfast places nearby. Small pool cleaned daily with comfy lounge chairs. I do wish they had a fountain to circulate the water so it would be a cooler temp. Staff could not be nicer. Check in was a breeze and they were ready to answer all of my questions. Gave great suggestions for dining and shopping. A small business supporting other small businesses. Housekeeping will come daily if needed. We are not in the room long enough to need daily service. I asked for extra towels and they were quickly delivered with a smile. South of Seven is the restaurant next door. Busy place filled with locals. Everyone went out of their way to welcome us. The food is good. We have had several of the apps and entrees and were pleased with everything. The Chef is out and about and ready to hear how everything was. I don't think you will disappointed eating here. With most of my travel I stay at larger hotel chains to take advantage of points. This stay has reminded me that these perks are not always the most important reason to choose a place to stay. And you cannot beat the price...$139.00 a night. read more

He refunded us immediately and apologized for our rough time spent at his lodge. We enjoyed staying in this place. It is convenient to the main road but not noisy and our room backed right on to the bay. We saw a lot of fish and birds in the area. It does look old and isn't super fancy but it seemed pretty laid back and casual. We felt that it was expensive but so was everything else down there too. read more

TLDR: The decor hasn't been changed since the 70s. Tikibar is loud at night. ____________ The best way to describe this pace is...Old. Yea. Old. As other's have mentioned this place is in dire need of an upgrade. The sheets. The wood paneling. The old radio. The wired phone. The bathroom. Everything is vintage. It was clean though. Which is nice. But stains and rust are hard to clean - and those are prevalent throughout the room. Having a Tikibar on site is a gift and a curse. I went to get a beer during the day. Awesome. But at night the music is blaring and the folks can get pretty hammered. It was hard to fall asleep with all the noise. I was with a friend who got the room next to mine and he was woken up at 2am by a drunk lady, thinking she was opening the glass door to her room. We were getting up at 3:30am anyways, so he just stayed up. The price tag on these rooms were about $200 each, which is pretty pricey, for what you're getting. I get it's the keys. But man, I've stayed in way better places for a lot cheaper. Ultimately, I lived. I got a few hours of sleep and was off in the morning - but I have no doubt I will never be back here. read more

It's vintage - this is not a Holiday Inn - but it's awesome. The rooms are big and waterfront, ours was clean, and they are friendly and eager to please. The sunsets outside the room are beautiful. Rooms have mini-fridge, desk, TV, table, etc... but they are old. If you love retro Florida, you'll love everything about this place to the sign out front to the light fixtures in your room. read more

The lodge is older but nice, the Tiki bar is a good Keys fit, they have a great bartender, friendly people, fun especially on trivia nights. The restaurant has good pizza, but you want to be sure that you price anything before ordering it, they have some very high priced items behind the counter, like cannoli etc. For example a pizza and 6 cannolis for $60 plus tax! The tiki bar and the lodge are the bet part of this deal, and it's waterfront. read more

We came to Key West on a vacation and found this little place to stay! The interior of the rooms are updated, and quaint. Tiki Bar is AMAZING. Great prices and good amount of liquor. The breakfast that was available for purchase at the pizza place was also very well made. Loved our stay here and will definitely stay again! Very close to Key West! read more

I would give this place minus 5 stars if I could. Yes, its vintage, but not nice, well kept vintage, it's more like a run-down, beaten up old place. For those that gave this place 5 stars, I seriously wonder if you reviewed the wrong place or smoked something. We only stayed here since its memorial weekend and all the hotels were full. The check-in lady was not friendly. The beds were very uncomfortable. The bathtub and shower curtain was dirty. The water had no, i mean, NO pressure, its like taking showers in dribbles. The most ridicules thing was that the toilet bowl had a pretty big crack in it (almost 4-5 inches) and the toilet wobbles when you sit on it. Everytime we need to use the toilet, we had to make it quick and pray the toilet doesn't fall apart when you are taking a dump : / Oh, I almost forgot all the dead little insects that were spotted in the room and bathroom.... We stayed here for one night while exploring key west and it was nothing short of perfect for us! Making the reservation was a very easy process, the rates were very reasonable, and the room incredibly comfortable!! Check in was a breeze and the very kind lady at the front desk was welcoming and so pleasant to talk to. The bed was absolutely wonderful, we slept better here than we do at home!!! It's a nice and clean place. Staff is super friendly. Not a super fancy place but has the essentials.

There were bedbugs here, but the issue is being resolved satisfactorily. *UPDATE* Since posting the previous review I have been in contact with the hotel owner, who is very apologetic and professional. He has assured me that all rooms have been inspected by a professional exterminator and the infested ones have been completely stripped and treated. He even provided photographic evidence of this. He has also offered to reimburse any exterminator fees that I cousin and I may incurr due to bedbugs following us home from his hotel. Other than the bedbugs, I enjoyed my stay the Sugarloaf Lodge and feel comfortable with the steps that have since been taken by the hotel owner. In the end we are all victims in this new era of bedbug domination and the real lesson here is always, ALWAYS check for bedbugs when you first arrive at a hotel, no matter where you are! read more

Let's just get the negatives out of the way first....this place needs a serious upgrade. It's not dirty, it's just outdated. Wood paneling, old fashion phone, old light switches, bathrooms have this weird divided sink combo goin on, old fashioned room keys, no microwave, the Ac was loud, and the wifi is almost non-existent. Now, with all that being said, I really enjoyed my stay here. It's very low-key and relaxing. The rooms have vaulted ceilings (second floor only) but all of the rooms are big! The rooms have a view of the cove. They're right on the water. The view is worth the outdated aspects of the lodge alone. The beds were comfy and the tv worked just fine. It was actually a flatscreen, which is surprising. The pool is quiet and relaxing. Nothing fancy but it's heavenly in the hot sun. There's a tiki bar that gets pretty loud at night but during the day it's very nice to have. (We had a baby with us so we were in bed early) if we had not have had a baby with us we'd probably would have a good time down at the tiki bar at night, they had live music and a lot of locals go there. The drinks were very good and strong too. The restaurant had very good food, we had pizza and tacos. All in all, if you want a quiet, low key place to stay that's close to key west (20 minutes maybe) this lodge is it! I'd come back here for sure. Oh and the people in the lobby were very friendly. I must have called three times for an extra key because we've locked ourselves out of our room and they never seemed annoyed or angry with us lol the room service ladies are very very friendly. read more

The restaurant has a lot of curb appeal you can tell it cost a lot to build it and decorate it. There is a really cool wood fire oven as a focal point. The food is traditional and quite tasty lots of wonderful flavor. So why did I rate you two stars? Perhaps calling yourself a pizzeria is a misnomer. It seems like you want to charge for fine dining yet bridge casual dining at the same time?? It's not really working for the avid restaurant goer. The staff wear jeans which if you're a casual eatery that's fine but if you're a fine dining establishment then maybe not. The service is not up to par for fine dining. There seemed to be sufficient staff available? I don't know of any other pizzeria in the Keys that has $18 appetizers (even Louie's Backyard doesn't have $18 appetizers). Almost everything on the menu is at or over $18 the dessert items are $9 or more. I had to ask my server for water 4 times and she still didn't bring it. She had someone else place the check on the table before we were finished eating and barely came over to find out how our meal was. My husband could see that she was 'hanging around the bar quite a while'. The menu lacks focus it's entirely too large. Then there is the additional two full pages of daily specials, printed on ordinary paper that cheapens the experience. The staff should let you know when ordering that the portions are enormous (they didn't). If you order an appetizer (which is the size of a full meal) and you order an entree there is too much food. Sell the right experience pizzeria or haute cuisine make up your mind. I wasn't disappointed in the food I did feel it was too expensive for such poor service. I could see the floor manager hanging around chatting up with someone yet she never came over to check on the diner guest. I did eat there more than once and unfortunately both times the service just wasn't there. If I'm going to spend nearly $100 on dinner for two I want to enjoy myself without having to ask for better service. I doubt I'll be back any time soon. read more

What a gem. This was the last hotel on our 5 day Keys vacation and it was my favorite. Previous to this, we stayed at a 5-star resort and I still loved the Sugarloaf Lodge more! Yes, the rooms still have retro-"old Florida" flair, but that is the true spirit of the Keys. All rooms are right on the water, which is incredible to walk out to with your complimentary coffee in the morning. The tiki bar is really what made it for us: we were up until midnight listening to a local 2-person band and dancing on the deck. Cici, the bartender, was professional and friendly and always made sure we had a drink when we needed one. The locals who came down to the bar were great company and very welcoming. Vladimir, the gentleman who cooked our pizza at the in-Lodge restaurant, even joined us at the bar after the restaurant closed and asked how our meal was. If you're looking to stay in your room the entire time, I wouldn't suggest this Lodge. But if you're looking for a real experience, go. The rooms were clean, no bugs, big TV, just slightly outdated (if you care much about that). Other than that, we had a great time and can't wait to come back next year. I stayed here for business purposes (thanks to my Company) the vintage part was not the problem. The place was dirty for example blood on my sheets, rat droppings in the room and bathroom, stains on sheets that were unexplained. The customer service was just as bad after myself and other partners brought it to their attention. They gave us new rooms but there was no difference we could not wait to leave. It seems as though this place is used by plenty of companies because we made friends with other guest that were only there for business purposes only. One night at the bar we witnessed the most unacceptable behavior anytime and anywhere. This guy was so racist to another guest that i was not sure how this young man was so humble for most of it, as much as he could stand i totally understand that he had to stand up for himself in some way or form because this older gentleman was so abusive. And to think that the Bartenders or a Manager would come and remove this Patron to avoid anymore chaos, they made no attempt. Everyone watched on. If this is the type of negative behavior that is accepted in Sugar Loaf Lodge I will definitely alert my company to end any contracts or further stays here. And i wish i did grab the young man's contact information so that i can hire such a humble and passionate person. The management is horrible and not hospitable at all. NOT CLEAN AND RACISM for any color, size, origin or beliefs is unacceptable. I wish that young man all the best in all his endeavors and hope his job does not discipline him for a very unforeseen event. For the price not worth it!!! read more
