Key West didn't seem like it was a cheap hotel type of place and Old Town's charms far outweighed the eastern part of the island where most of the lodging is to be found. Maybe it had something to do with me watching The White Lotus, too, what with the bright airiness of The Paradise Inn, the white and pastel palette and the classy sheen the place has. Fortunately, my stay here was far more chill and less dramatic than anything you'll see on The White Lotus. My neighbors here up in Michigan used to live on Simonton street, a few blocks from The Paradise Inn. Cindy wanted me to send pictures of her old house so I'd already acquainted myself with the street. The Paradise Inn looked so elegant and quaint it caught my eye. After lunch at La Grignote, a name I still don't know how to pronounce, I decided to see if The Paradise Inn had any single rooms. I was in luck! The lady at the front desk was very kind and helpful. $179 for the night but $30 of that was parking which is a hot commodity in Key West that can really add up. Not only that, but they had bicycle rentals on site which was really the way to go. It's all about bikes and golf carts in Key West. Check-in time wasn't until 3 and I dragged my weary ass in a little after 2, really needed a refreshing nap after two successive nights not getting the best sleep. I pled my case, hoping I could get in the room a bit early but prepared to be refused, reminding myself it was understandable if the room wasn't ready. The stars aligned and The Paradise Inn did me a big solid by letting me into my room before 3! (Your results may vary. I'm not trying to give any entitled Yelpers unrealistic expectations here.) My friendly desk clerk provided me with a paper map and a remote for the front gate and I was soon contentedly snoozing. Fortunately I had texted Cindy and she replied, telling me not to miss the early December sunset as the sunset viewing is stellar there so I set an alarm. My room was on the second floor, spotlessly clean and quiet. The whole place was very chill, despite being just a block from Duvall street. I rented my bike after awakening from my nap and I think it was due back at 10pm for a one day rate but again I was let slide a little, and granted permission to return the bike key first thing in the morning. I put some miles on that bike and soaked in the city. I wish I would have taken a dip in the Paradise Inn pool, which looked lovely, but the novelty of swimming in the ocean in December superseded that. Later I was tempted to take a midnight swim but looked at the rules and decided I shouldn't push my luck. Especially at someplace so quiet and drama free. I just watched the end of Monday Night Football instead. The cabins here look really top notch as well. Maybe one day I'll find myself back with others and we can rent one.

The restaurant is a joke. Getting service is next to impossible. I saw a table waving at employees to get service and the bartender actually said, I hate it when customers do that, and then did nothing. To sum it up, this place needs new management. As someone who admires antiques, architecture of the past, and it's history. This hotel is totally cool. I walked inside to ask if they had a restroom onsite. My friend and I were eating at the restaurant in front of the hotel. Thankfully, I was greeted with cordial demeanor and given guided instructions on how to locate the restroom. The exterior of the hotel was restored, but appeared how it was years ago. Apparently, this hotel was the hot spot for celebrities back in the way back. So cool! No old mildew smell permeanting the lodging/museum. The restroom, however, wasn't something of expectations as it was completely renovated to be modern of today's standards. I was hoping to see light fixtures, sink, and toilet from the 1800's, disappointingly not. I learned quickly that was the only restroom nearby covering the attractions nearby so people frequently came and go with long lines. The restroom had an unpleasant odor of waste which was disgusting. I'm glad I had a proper shirt to cover my nose while my mouth was closed too. Overall, pretty cool hotel in a cute color too.

We were informed that all three rooms had been ready since 11:00 a.m., but if we wanted access before 4:00 p.m., we would each have to pay a $30 early check-in fee. Whether or not guests should be charged for accessing rooms that are already available is the hotel's decision. That wasn't our issue. The problem was the way we were treated. The manager and another front desk employee were rude, argumentative, dismissive, and completely lacking in basic customer service skills. This wasn't directed at just one person--they treated our entire group this way. Instead of professionally explaining the policy once, they chose to argue with us as if we were doing something wrong by simply asking a question. There was no courtesy, no empathy, and certainly no hospitality. Unfortunately, the problems didn't stop at check-in. For the rates this hotel charges, we expected far better service. I had to ask twice before our room was cleaned, and one of our rooms had a significant ant problem. The AC unit was loud and it was on all day and all night. Hotels can have policies. That's understandable. What they cannot afford to have is management that treats paying guests with disrespect. The hospitality industry is built on customer service, and this hotel failed at the most basic level. We left feeling more like an inconvenience than valued guests. We chose this hotel because of its reputation, but based on our experience, the service did not come close to matching the price. Management should seriously reevaluate how guests are treated because no one spending this kind of money should be spoken to in such an unprofessional and argumentative manner. Not worth the money. They have a sign luxury hotel but it's far from luxury service.

This time we were booked into this adorable Inn right in the heart of Duval! I would totally recommend this place! The room was spacious, the shower was huge (and the bathroom too), and the bed was soooooo comfortable. I have a really bad back so it was a treat to not wake up in pain. They also give you a certificate for a free drink at check-in at their adorable in house rum bar, and the bartender does not hold back! A bonus was they had a full size fridge with water for us, and a mini kitchen! I loved learning about the history of this place from the staff. The palings on the upper porch has alcohol bottles as well as hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs cut out to signify it was a speakeasy where booze and gambling could be found, back in the day. They also had a resident cat by the name of Captain Tubby (I believe that was his official name. I called him Captain Phatasmic) who was the pinnacle representation of the Key West laid back attitude. The only reason it's not a 5 star review is bright and early Saturday morning we were woken by the roaring sounds of a chain saw taking down branches of trees directly outside our room. If you've ever spent a night in Key West you know they usually end pretty late, so it was a bit of a rude awakening. There was also a hose left out all night directly in the pathway that I nearly tripped on. I would absolutely love to return to this place and hope that next time it's not such a short trip so that I can enjoy a lazy afternoon people watching on their porch while sipping on delicious rum drinks. The staff was friendly and kept the room tidy and replenished the bottled water in our mini fridge which was very appreciated. We also enjoyed the attached bar, the Rum Bar. Their drink and cocktail selection was great. They had a banana split cocktail that was my favorite. Even with the bar in the same building, it wasn't loud when we went to bed early. It was very convenient to get a drink before bed though.

Our room was located on the backside of the building. Street noise was minimal, but yes the roosters will wake you up in the early morning hours. The Westwinds Inn provides a nice breakfast option of bagels, muffins, cereal, hard boiled eggs, fruit, coffee/hot tea and juice. This year they added a poolside Happy Hour on Wednesday - Friday from 3-4:30pm with beer, wine and some canned cocktails. It was a nice social time to meet others in the late afternoon. I hope they continue to have this for guests. The property is well maintained and our room was clean. The housekeeping staff made up the room everyday while we were out and provided fresh towels. The bathroom was nicely renovated with a blow dryer in the drawer and small bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The room itself is pretty tiny with a very small amount of walking room along one side of the bed. It made it slightly difficult to use the cabinet for your clothes on that side of the room. If you are a larger person or have mobility issues then this room is not for you. Resting in bed and looking out to watch the tops of the palm trees sway in the breeze was a lovely view. Again, we rented bikes from Eaton bikes (on the corner) which is convenient. Westwinds also has a large bike rack in the property to use.

The room has a great setup with a king bed in the bedroom with pocket doors to separate it from the rest of the suite. There is a combination full kitchen, dining area, and living area. This room was so comfortable. They think of everything for make this home away from home. The room is stocked with salt/pepper, silverware, glassware, coffee cups, cooking supplies and utensils. I would enjoy making my coffee in the Keurig and setting either on the porch or by the coy pond with the water feature. I don't remember. The las time I was this relaxed. Since they supplied wine glasses so could enjoy wine on the porch or by the coy pond. And the housekeeping, Abigail, was a true delight. The Cigar House is in the middle of the complex so you are not distributed but road noise. I cannot wait to come back. I already booked next year!
