A Sunday - Monday stay…read more We celebrated Valentine's the first Sunday-Monday in March in hopes of having the Island to ourselves. Instead of staying at the big hotel on The Strand, we decided to try Schaefer Haus. With two homes to select from, we selected what is Room 2 in the main haus. It is beautiful and filled with antique furnishings. Tammy and the rest of the staff are lovely. Tammy filled us in on the Happy Hour and Breakfast details and showed us our room; what is listed as the Freiberg (and now known as the Laura or Room2.) The room is comfortable. The bathroom includes a claw foot tub with shower head. There are three rooms available on the second floor and two on the third. Okay, here we go. (Let me first say, we have every intention of staying here again.) We arrived early. When we were shown our room, Room 1 and 3 were being cleaned and unoccupied. I was delighted at the idea of having the Haus to ourselves. Within an hour, both rooms were filled, as well as the third floor. As sound travels, I quickly realized there were some flaws in privacy. For instance, there is a second door in the bathroom that is right by the toilet. If opened, it would be into the space at the top of the stairs on the second floor shared by the three rooms. There is a gap at the base of the door that you could pass a stack of two magazines under. On the opposite side of the toilet is the window that is used to gain access to the private balcony. Only a sheer black curtain provides coverage from the two houses across the street. After dark, I turned the bathroom lights off and used the romantic amount of light that comes in through that door I was speaking of earlier. The actual bathroom door in no way secures to the door frame. That said, it stayed closed anytime one of us was depending on privacy. Let's talk sound. Around 2AM, Room 1 or 3 decided it was time to listen to some soothing sounds of Trip-House at volume 11. Okay. This did not wake me, but it woke the husband. However, around 3AM, what sounded like a man and woman began screaming violently at one another. This did wake me with deep concern. Ten minutes later - all quiet. We found out after breakfast, the music was coming from Room 1. Lastly, security. There is a tiny knob on Room 2 that acts as a dead bolt. Lock it! At least twice during the night someone vigorously checked our room doorknob as if they were confused about which room was theirs. Monday morning, breakfast was delicious. While there were no mimosas (which are available on Saturday and Sunday,) the quiche was fantastic and the bacon crisp! Coffee, water, juice, and milk were also available. Schaefer Haus should definitely be on your list for a stay on The Strand!

Unlike many other Galveston hotels there is no road between you and the beach which means a quieter, more private experience. Because Islander East is a condominium hotel each unit is unique. The building offers everything from one bedroom efficiencies to multi room suites. Each unit is decorated and furnished individually so there is sure to be something for your taste and budget. Private gated parking means your vehicle is secure during your stay. The staff is friendly and helpful and there is an employee at the desk 24 hours a day. The hotel is very family friendly with amenities to appeal to kids and adults. A nice heated pool with lounge chairs and canopy tables, picnic tables and comfortable chairs in the shade. Free fun family activities like horseshoes and cornhole, lawn bowling, and a little artificial putting green. There is an extensive lawn area with both charcoal and propane grills so you could feed the family right on site. Groceries are available at Arlans which is just a mile away. And of course an easy, safe, boardwalk right to the beach. When you do go out, Islander East is close to many bars and excellent restaurants and is a five minute drive or Uber to Galvestons famous Strand district with bars, restaurants, night life and list of unique seasonal events. If you want to entertain kids there is the Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens, or Schlitterbahn. You could book an island getaway just one hour from the big city and enjoy a total reset in your attitude and stress levels. No airport, no passports, no hassle. Just jump in the car and come on down.

Not only were we conveniently close to the cruise port, but we were also able to walk to The Strand and enjoy the local attractions. We picked up our wine for the cruise, treated ourselves to ice cream at La King's Confectionery, and enjoyed some live music. In the morning, we took a short stroll to Starbucks just a block away, enjoying coffee outside in the beautiful morning atmosphere. We then returned to the hotel for breakfast, which was a satisfying continental spread. They had bagels, muffins, cream cheeses, cereals, fresh fruit salad, and even some Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches you could heat up. It was a nice, plentiful breakfast with something for everyone. A special shoutout to Dee at the front desk who made our check-in smooth and welcoming. Watching the cruise ships sail in from our room was such a unique experience, and the overall comfort of the huge king bed and the spacious room really made our stay special. We're so glad we stayed here!

This past weekend (2/25-27/22) I checked in and was charged the remaining balance; I'll come back to that in a minute. I'm giving my room key and head to the room. Upon entering the room, I notice the room is clean and has plenty of lighting. I go to unpack my stuff and inspect the room more closely. First problem, I notice that the towels have stains on them, which is crazy. Then I check out the coffee and condiments, the sweetener packets are hard as rocks, and the individual creamers when opened look like they have been sitting there awhile. Additionally, when inspect the bathroom it's mostly clean but there are long strands of someone's hair on the shower wall, GROSS! The bed was somewhat comfortable and the room did come with a mini fridge (empty and clean), and a microwave. The TV seemed to function properly but had these lines on the screen, making me think thst perhaps the screen was failing. I failed, btw to mention any of these problems to the guy that checked me out on Sunday, so that's on me; but if he is worth anything he checks out these reviews and will see the areas he needs to improve upon. Also, the room didn't have a phone, which in today's world might seem ok I guess, but what do you do for the occasional guest that might not have a cell phone? They do exist, so ya. The room did have a chair to sit in, even though it was the cheapest fold-out chair I've ever seen. So now we get to the check out process, which was super easy. But, I had reviewed my bank account the night before and realized I had been overcharged for the room. A little back story... so when I had reserved the room back in January, the gentleman that had helped me quoted me 2 rates, $109 for the "old rooms", (his words, not mine...), and $119 for the "newly renovated rooms". I picked the older room, and it should be noted that all the rooms and had been renovated but there was a new section and an old section. Anyway I pointed out to the owner that he had charged me for the new room rate and not the old one. After a little back and forth, he did refund the difference. Bottom line, there aren't that many options for visitors who can't afford to rent a beach house or don't have an RV to stay at in Crystal Beach. Perhaps this will change soon, I sure hope so. This place was mediocre at BEST; and what's scary is that the other hotel in the area is apparently a glorified roach motel, so disappointing. Maybe the guy who owns and runs this place can stop being such a cheapskate send use some of his inflated room rate money and buy some CLEAN towels, buy some decent chairs for the rooms, get some FRESH coffee packets and condiments, and hire some qualified cleaning staff. For my money, I'll just either rent an RV in the area next time, or stay at a good hotel in Galveston and take the ferry over each day.

We wanted to do something special with just us and Avenue O was the perfect choice! Polly and Jeff were absolute pleasures to work with! This historic home was so charming and cozy. I loved how beautifully it was decorated with a coastal theme. I loved all the beachy touches from the artwork, light fixtures, colors, furniture, etc. Everything was so elegant. We stayed in the Seawall Suite which is the largest room. It has a nice balcony as well. It was also decorated beautifully like the rest of the house. It was very cozy and comfortable. We chose to get married in the backyard near the gazebo. It was perfect. It was just my husband and I, Polly, Jeff and Heidi of course. Heidi actually walked me to the gazebo as if she was walking me "down the aisle." It was adorable! She's the Yorkie in the photos. Our ceremony was quick and intimate. Jeff did an excellent job and made us feel at ease as if we were just hanging out with friends. Not only is Polly an amazing decorator, she is also a very talented cook. She even made us a wedding cake! It was very pretty and so delicious!! I believe she said it was an Amaretto buttercream with strawberry filling. It was sooooooooo amazing!! In the morning, she made us an incredible homemade breakfast! It started off with yogurt parfaits and fresh granola. Yum! Then there were mini pumpkin pancakes, fresh potatoes, bacon and scrambled eggs. The bacon was so yum. It tasted like a maple-peppered bacon but I'm not sure what it was. All I know is it was awesome! Our wedding package was so reasonably-priced. We didn't have to do anything except pay and show up. Polly took care of the rest. We just can't say enough about how wonderful our stay was. Polly is so great at taking care of people. She and Jeff were both fantastic hosts. If you're ever in Galveston, I would highly recommend staying with them instead of at a hotel. You won't regret it!!

We lived at this property for ten years. It has been the worst ten years of our lives. Health issue…read moreafter health issue, headaches, daily nose bleeds, dizziness, unbearable fatigue, sinus infections to name a few. Physical, mental and emotional stress. We did not have the money to move and did our absolute best to just exist. Issues reported were belittled and neglected. From massive water leaks leading to an entire closet molding and property loss to mushrooms growing from our ceiling, the attic space above us being riddled with mold, sagging ceilings that had to be taped up, sagging floors, gas leaks that we were told were "just perfume smells", improperly wired electric that led to outrageous bills and fried appliances, an a/c that didn't work, our bedroom vent didn't work and would get up to 90 degrees and 85+ humidity and we were told by the maintenance lead "you just need a fan", no hot water for months that we and other units were just expected to deal with without explanation, the list goes on and on. We have ten years of pictures, videos, a statement from the Texas Gas Service technician that showed up to address two different gas leaks that were ignored by maintenance. One was due to maintenance using an outlawed o-ring on the ovens gas line. We have emails and text messages and screenshots of maintenance request showing the years of issues reported and neglected over and over including video of the maintenance lead belittling us and lying to the gas tech when the leaks were reported. Telling us "well if you report it and they shut the gas off everyone will be cold, do you want that". My son had to go to urgent care because of the leak from the drier next door that was reported and ignored. We have video and audio of Christopher Teachworth-the owner, committing insurance fraud, claiming damages to insurance adjustors after Beryl that were pre-existing, we have pictures and video showing the damages before Beryl. We have video footage of maintenance being sent in to apartments and covering the wall to wall mold in apartments before the adjustors showed up and did a walk through. We have video of Morgan, a rental agent for the Seasons speaking to someone about the things she was asked to cover up before adjustors walked the property. We have emails and texts from management telling us we were not allowed to speak with adjustors walking the property. We just wanted to leave and forget the last ten years happened. We paid rent on time, were quiet and respectful and deserved to use it as solid rental history but they wanted to be petty because we moved out so we will be joining a suit against them with two other units for damages. The only negative is the "dog-friendly" atmosphere, Meaning that residents don't always curb their dog appropriately, nor clean up after them.
