This place not only has an amazing interior but also a outstanding menu with all sorts of variety giving you many choices to choose from. * Gobi aloo ($16) ~ this was delicious the aloo gobi was thick and well seasoned. It was nicely filled with potatoes and a bit of cauliflower. Wish there was more cauliflower as it was mainly potatoes. * Butter chicken ($16.75) ~ this was a classic we got mild and it was not spicy at all! It was creamy and smooth. The chicken was a bit dry and rough but overall I like the butter chicken. * Tandoori wings ($12.75) ~ very well seasoned. Jam packed with flavour and loads of sautéed veggies on top. The chicken wings were juicy and nicely cooked. * Achari Cod tandoori ($22.75) ~ the cod was so good. It was so soft and tender it was super flaky. The seasoning was super good and this was amazing with the chutney variety. * Paneer pakora ($14.50) ~ this was good. Loads of cheese in it. I recommend eating this hot because when it's cold it's no longer cheesy! This is good with the chutney sauces! * Chatpata Sev puri ($12.50) ~ AMAZING 100% must try! First time having this dish and 100% not the last. It was crunchy and crispy and full of flavours. Super refreshing and yummy! I think I have found a new favourite dish! * Garlic naan ($4.75) ~ love the loads of garlic on the naan it was chewy and nicely cooked. Tasty food and great service. I've dined in and gotten takeout, with both times being a very satisfying meal. I always have leftovers for another meal or two after. They have a pretty big selection of items on their menu, including vegetarian ones. They also indicate menu items that are dairy free and gluten free, which I found helpful. I also like that you can choose the spice level for each curry. I've tried a few of the curries and found that they are all flavourful and delicious. The only thing that I've noticed is that the vegetarian curries seem to be on the saltier side, compared to the meat ones. To go with the curry, we tried a few of their naans. Garlic naan is nice to go with everything. The naan stuffed with potato is pretty good and filling. I thought the onion and cilantro naan was just ok and we preferred the other two over this one. Overall, the naans are tasty and quite a large portion. It's well worth the price. Definitely check this place out if you're craving some Indian food! read more

This was my first time visiting Sula and am really glad that my friend had suggested it. The place was very welcoming and the staff were very friendly. We tried a two dishes and a dessert. I am a huge fan of the shahi paneer Ive never heard of gulab jamun before but decided to give it a try. I'd have to say i wasn't used to the taste... perhaps it's an acquired taste! Would totally recommend this restaurant! PS - parking can be a bit tricky as you would need to fight for a spot and pay for street parking. read more

I tried it for the first time and the food was old and not fresh. We ordered 2 chicken starters and the chicken was not at all fresh and very chewy. The mint sauce with chicken was also sweet and upon asking some spicy sauce, we were given some red tomato type sauce which definitely doesn't go with chicken . We also ordered beer which should be chilled and we were served normal beer and upon asking, we were offered ice and we were like ice in Beer. The staff was also not of much help as they were able to resolve. Not sure what can be done now to get it resolved. read more

To begin with decor- its authentic cum modern . Clean washrooms n warm ambience. It somehow look like east is east but different seating. Music could have been better. Now lets talk about mouth watering dishes. Food was cooked just as we wanted it-hot. We loved everything we ordered from sula platter in starters to main course of dal n shahi paneer. Servers were good n especially the owner mr. Sharad gave special attention to details. He was overlooking all the customers n helping the servers with serving n cleaning as it was busy night. Wow, wow, wow! I think Sula is my new go to Indian spot. Great food, fair prices, portions are also lovely to share. Their butter chicken is SO good, and their samosas are giant! All the side sauces are delicious and I have nothing bad to say. I can't wait to try more at Sula. Due to Covid I have only ordered from them through Delivery but I always order enough for leftovers. I was looking for a restaurant on Commercial Drive and discovered this here on Yelp. There were mostly good reviews and I hadn't had good Indian food in awhile. We decided to try it. The food was fantastic. From the Veggie Pakoras and drinks (Pimms Cup and the Mango Mojito) to the Garlic Naan, Butter Chicken and the Navrattan Korma. We were too full and on our way to a show and so we didn't even look at the dessert menu, but I'd like to go back when we have the time to sit and digest and try a dessert. The decor is luxurious and stunning, and next time, I'm going to ask to sit near the water feature. The service was really great, until the end when we were trying to leave to get to a show. We told them we needed to leave soon, and we ended up having to go up to the cash register, despite the fact that some of the servers were walking around with a debit machine.They were busy, but I wouldn't say swamped. Went to Sula last night with 3 other friends (all our first times). We had ordered wings and puri for appetizers. Butter chicken, lamb curry, rice and naan for mains. First of all, I requested nice comfortable seats especially booths while making a reservation since I'm 8 months pregnant and went with my toddler, husband and old mother mother in law. They seated us right in the center and didn't even consider giving us comfortable seats. Then the first server lady was extremely rude (had strong BO) Thankfully the male server took over and he was very nice and accommodating. Then we ordered Chicken 65, sev puri and paneer pakora. Paneer pakora and sev puri were really yummy. But chicken 65 was definitely not the original stuff you get in the south India where I lived for 4 years. It was dry and nothing close to the real deal. Then for dinner we ordered Lamb biryani, plain basmati rice, tangdi kebab, chicken korma, garlic cheese naan and prawn sukha. Except for the chicken korma none of these dishes had any flavour and again they butchered the authentic prawn sukha. The curry for the prawn was delicious but it's not the real deal. For dessert we ordered gulaab jamun and ras malai and even that could have been better. Very disappointing and all the other dishes were saltless and flavourless. Last Thursday, I attended the Yelp International Supper Club event held at Sula. I hadn't attended a Supper Club event before and was particularly interested in this one as I love Indian food and I was looking forward to meeting more Yelpers. Also, there were a lot of gluten free items on the menu. (I don't know if most Indian dishes are naturally gluten free, but it was nice to have it pointed out.) At first, I had a great impression of the restaurant--nice atmosphere, attentive service, and a great wine list. (They had a lot of wine from Gehringer Brothers, one of my favourite wineries.) However, not only was my meal terrible, but the server (who may have been the owner/manager) was extremely rude, and flipped out on me. I love spicy food, and when I ordered my entree, I asked for "very spicy". The server was trying to convince me to go for a milder spice level, but I insisted that I could take the heat. I don't know if he has no idea what "spicy" is (he said that their dishes are extremely spicy, and to exercise caution), or if he lied to me and told to kitchen to give me a mild seasoning, but the dish I had was not spicy at all. When he asked how the food was, I politely told him that it was not very spicy, and he said that he would take it back and add more spice. No problem with the service so far. I also asked him for a second glass of wine, and I saw him take my empty (or near empty) glass. A short while later, he came back with my "spicy" dish. It still wasn't that spicy, but it was better. However, he didn't come back with my second glass of wine, but I figured he would be back with it momentarily. Well, time passed, and he never brought my glass of wine. So much time passed that I figured he must have forgotten. Annoying, but not the end of the world--mistakes happen. When he finally came back, I politely asked about my glass of wine that I had ordered, and he pointed at a glass that was in front of my neighbour's place setting, that had a few sips of wine in it (definitely not empty), and told me that's my wine. Confused, because I thought that he was indicating that that was my second glass I had ordered, despite it being nearly empty, I told him that I had ordered a second glass of wine, and that he had removed my (supposedly empty) first glass from the table. I was very polite and calm, but he all of a sudden flipped the fuck out on me, and started yelling that I was accusing him of things he hadn't done (taking my wine), and that I had never ordered a second glass (now who's accusing who of things?). I tried to remain diplomatic and explain that perhaps there was a misunderstanding (perhaps he hadn't heard me order the wine and that perhaps he had moved my glass out of the way but I hadn't seen where he put it, and had only seen him take the glass, so I didn't realize my first glass was still at the table), but he wouldn't let me get a word in edgewise, and just yelled and yelled. Everyone sitting near me was looking at me in shock, and I was extremely embarrassed. During the server's tirade, I said very clearly that I was no longer interested in the second glass of wine, yet he still brought it; he probably didn't hear me because he was yelling so much. Not only was the server completely out of line, but the food was terrible. Wanting to try something new, I ordered the chicken vindaloo. I had never had vindaloo before, and I never will again, after this experience. (From now on, I'm just going to stick with butter chicken. Better be safe than sorry, and I sure was sorry!) I'm not sure what vindaloo is supposed to taste like, but what I had tasted like Hunt's tomato sauce, with not quite enough seasoning and a slight hint of coconut. It was pretty bad. A few other Yelpers, who were enjoying their food, tried my vindaloo and agreed that it wasn't good. Also, the rice had peas in it, and I hate peas. (Why were there peas in the rice?! So unnecessary!) So yeah, I was yelled at and the food was crap. I will never go to Sula again. It has been BANNED! Also, the restaurant is not very wheelchair accessible. To get to the back of the restaurant, where we were seated, you must step up a small step. While people in wheelchairs can access the lower level of the restaurant, the washrooms are divided by gender (why?! This is 2017!), and the men's washroom is on the upper level, with the women's on the lower level. So if you're a disabled woman, you're fine, but a disabled guy, you're screwed. And while the opposite gender can go into the other washroom (they are not single stall washrooms), it may be awkward, and the women's washroom is too small to fit a wheelchair. To be fully honest, I picked this place for dinner because of how pretty the interior looked in photos. Yeah, there were some great food reviews, but the interior decor... gorgeous! I was easily able to make a reservation for my large party of 15 via a phone call. When I walked in, I was guided to their back room right by a large bar. They had set up the entire back room for us with the full wooden table to go. For appies, as a table we split the Sula platter, chicken and lamb kebabs. Since I'm not eating meat, I didn't eat the kebabs, but I was surprised to see that they were more sausage like. From the sound of it, they were really tasty. I focused my tastebuds on the veggie samosa and veggie pakora. Out of the two, the veggie pakora was my fave. It was perfectly crispy and paired well with the sauce it came with. Not exactly sure what kind of sauce it was, but it was green and mildly spicy. For my main dish I got the Bombay aloo (potato and tomato curry) with garlic naan and spinach and paneer naan. The spinach and paneer was good, but I don't think I'd order it again. The spinach and paneer was stuffed inside the naan, which I thought was an interesting concept. I'm glad I was able to try it, but I think I'll stick to my fave: garlic naan. The potato curry was also really flavourful and paired nicely with the garlic naan. But, that's a classic. I had a lovely Sauvignon blanc and then shared a bottle of their Santa Ana merlot Shiraz blend with a few of the other guests and both were really lovely. Worth the drive over to the drive. The food here is very good and freshly prepared. What makes it different is the atmosphere and service. The place was full. We made a reservation which was good as it would have been a long wait. They place is an eclectic mix of water fountains, decorations and 3 distinct seating areas. We went all out with the food as there was 4 of us. It is best for sharing. We ordered some paneer pakora for starters, lamb Briyani which is my favourite dish, chicken tandoori was ok but didn't have the flavour that I was expecting. Butter chicken may not be authentic Indian but it is a nice comfort dish. Make sure you order a side of pickles and yogurt. They also have a variety of naans. We enjoyed our dinner. read more

Went to Sula recently with friends. Service was kind of slow in terms of getting waters/drinks. I understand the food is cooked fresh so we expected to wait a bit for food which is fine by me. But no one greeted us at the table and offered water or drinks until like 15-20 mins waiting. Food was presentable, rice and naan were great but the shahi paneer was so disappointing... it tasted like they took a can of Campbells tomato soup and heated it up with pieces of paneer.
