I just had a very weird encounter with the chimney inspector. He was late by an hour, scheduled to come at 11am, but showed by over an hour late. He refused to wear shoe covers inside or have me wipe his shoes. When asked about it, he said the shoe covers make him slip, and when I suggested I wipe his shoes instead he refused to allow me to do that and said he's just going to go back outside. He raised his voice when I suggested he bring the supplies inside and then wipe the shoes and said he's not going to do the chimney inspection and he's just going to leave now. I had new carpet installed last week and understandably was a little apprehensive about him walking on it. He proceeded to ask me if it is cultural and implied I'm not-American. I got frustrated and straight up asked him if he is being xenophobic, to which he said yes LOL. I asked him if he knew what that word meant, and he said yes. Luke and Steve are great! Luke understood my budget and gave me options that worked within it. They rebuilt the crown and coated it with crown coat, painted my chimney cap and remounted it after painting it, and cleaned out and repaired the grout in my firebox. He tested the gas for me as well painted the fireplace grate too. They laid down a cloth while they cleaned the firebox and they wiped off my patio, so you couldn't tell they were their except I now have a functioning chimney cap. Luke is very honest and open. He's very friendly and a pleasure to work with. I learned a lot and Luke demonstrated his insistence on safety, which I fully appreciated. I called Luke because water was leaking from my chimney. He came out and assessed the issue. Unlike other people, Luke did not try to sell me on additional things or rush the job. He wanted to make sure that he diagnosed the cause of the issue correctly. I called Sullivan Chimney Sweep out to do an inspection and cleaning of my fireplace to insure it was in working order before using it. They were easy to communicate with and honest every step of the way. Once they arrived, they told me my chimney didn't warrant a paid cleaning and that instead of paying them for a full cleaning I should just burn a cleaning log. They confirmed the starter pipe was working properly, the chimney cap looked good, and sprayed some lubricant on the damper to help it loosen up some from being stiff after years of non-use. He did a thorough and reasonably priced inspection, explained what he found, answered all of my questions and gave me options for repair of a few problems that he found. One of the best parts of the process was the education on proper fireplace use and maintenance. I really appreciated the information because I had a former co-worker whose home caught fire from the fireplace that he never had cleaned. I did not want that to happen to me.
