Arthur is the best locksmith in the city. I called him in an emergency when I locked myself out of my apartment at 11pm. By 11:30 he had already picked the lock and let me in, with NO damage to the lock. Since then he has copied a few sets of keys for me. He uses some old school manual machine that is quicker and makes better quality copies than the big automated machines Home Depot and Lowe's uses. Arthur did a wonderful job! My keys kept sticking to my old lock and I was worried that one day it would get stuck and I would be locked out so I decided to get my locks changed. I messaged a couple of highly rated Locksmiths on Yelp and Arthur was the only one who listened to my issue and suggested that I change the cylinders of the locks instead of the lock hardware if the locks were working fine. It was cheaper for me and I really appreciated his honesty - I wouldn't have known any better and would have spent money changing perfectly good locks! Just to highlight how thoughtful he is- he changed two lock cylinders for me and he made them and their corresponding keys different colors so that I know which keys go where. I found Arthur from Sullivan locksmith after the guys I called (won't name them, but also a reputable locksmith in upper east side area) didn't show up in the time they promised. I waited in my building lobby, 2am now, standing around waiting for God knows who to show up if anyone would even show up. After about 40 minutes of waiting I gave up and called Sullivan, who was also on yelp but not as many reviews. They promised to have someone come to me in 20 minutes. ( I must admit I had my doubts) Thankfully it was a short wait and I had new keys to my apartment on the spot. My landlord had misplaced our mailbox key prior to us moving in so I called Sullivan Locksmith, because they were close and had good reviews. The employee came right away and it took about 10 minutes for him to completely replace the lock and give me two new keys. I locked myself out of my apt, which happens a lot, for it is a slam lock apartment door. I called my landlord and basically told me to call a locksmith to open the door. My experience with "Sullivan Locksmith" was positive but of a very different order from other reviewers. I needed keys duplicated and was looking for a physical store location to walk into and get the key copies. Seeing "Sullivan Locksmith" had all these glowing reviews and noting that it was in my neighborhood, I walked on over. It's a high-rent area, so in one quite small shop there is a dry cleaner (in front) and a combination shoe repair business with a key duplicating stall in the back. At first I was skeptical about this setup -- I had been looking for a "real" locksmith shop because I'd gotten lousy key copies at a hardware store near my building. This did not fit my narrow vision of a "real" locksmith business, but I decided to take my chances on it since I was already there. I learned by observing that key duplicating is often so simple that the average 5-year old could do it. Medeco keys are more complicated, so probably for those some training is required. In any case, my anxiety was misplaced... the keys were duplicated very quickly by a man who was dividing his time between shoe repair and making key copies. I got 2 Medeco keys, 1 "regular" key and one small mailbox key copied and paid $18.51 including tax. All the keys worked well in their various locks, so I was quite happy with the outcome. Was it expensive? I have no idea. I don't have any information about "Sullivan Locksmith" but I can recommend the key duplicating shop that calls itself "Y&A Locksmith" at 229 Sullivan Street based on my one experience. read more

They are not clear in pricing. Before my lock was removed I asked how much it would cost for a replacement. The installer told me 'I'm about to tell you that' -- but then removed the lock and then only after that gave me initial figures. At which point I was then stuck without any lock mechanism on the door. First I was told 150 for installation and 575 for the heavy duty lock. It turned out keys were not included in these figures (an additional 125 or 225 depending on type) and the total ended up as 1105.08 to replace a standard apartment lock. Of course I wish I could have been quoted this amount before the start of the job and then at least that amount when I asked for a quote and was told 575 plus 150 installation. So be prepared: a normal lock replacement will cost over 1100 dollars. This will not be made clear to you in advance. read more

one thing that sucks is locking yourself out of your own apartment, and another thing that sucks is knowing how long it takes to get a locksmith to show up. what was nice was that I was able to call ahead and make sure someone would be at my apartment, ready to work with me. I locked myself out in the morning on the way to work, bamboozled by the feature that you can open the door from the inside but not the outside - a nice feature (unless you're me). before immediately calling places and being late to work, set an appointment and was able to get access to my apartment pretty quickly. it came to be over $300 for getting me in and installing a new lock (they were quick!) and they worked with me through my bank being a bit overprotective after just having my card stolen Edit: I waited a while to adjust this review. It was a weird experience about a day after I posted this. I got a text from someone there asking me to remove the cost from the review as it impacted their calls for "a few days". I was kinda pissed off, as it was there for only a day and I thought it was weird to ask me to adjust my review. I was told I could get a discount for the review if it was 5 stars and I didn't know until afterwards that companies aren't supposed to do that and it violates Yelps terms. I let them know this after we had texted and responses stopped, but it's left such a sour taste in my mouth that, after seeing I had left a review, I just wanted to add this piece of information. In general, they charge high but they got there. It was weird to be asked to adjust my review. It was weird that he thought my review (up, at that time, for less than 24 hours) had caused their last few days of lower calls. They still did a good job and got me in, so my score remains the same. Let's face it... The fact that a locksmith company has any reviews on yelp much less 70+ pretty much says it all. I emailed several different locksmiths for a quote to replace my locks at my new home in Forest Hills. Arthur was very quick with a response. Not only that but I could tell right away that he was fair and honest. Not expected from my previous experiences with locksmiths and other peoples horror stories.
