If you're in the mood for authentic, decently priced, tasty Turkish food, Sultan Kebab should be at the top of your list. The ambience is comfortable and rustic, away from the bustle of the downtown mall. The staff is incredibly friendly and very helpful in recommending dishes from the large menu. Because of its popularity, I would advise coming either later in the evening (~7:30) or later in the afternoon to get the full experience. Below is an overview of what I ordered: COMBO INEGÖL KÖFTE & LAMB: On the pricer side, but delicious. The Kofte (a ground beef and veal link) was spicy, hearty, and well seasoned. The lamb was equally tender, moist, and seared nicely. There is a huge tendency in this type of cuisine to mask the flavors with oil and sauces, but the meats stood up really well and packed a ton of flavor even without any accompaniment. The other components of the dish were good, but felt a bit disconnected. The rice underneath soaked the drippings from the meat, but didn't carry any seasoning at all and tasted a bit bland. The bread on the side was cut up into pieces-too small and delicate to pick up the meat or salad. Given the acidic balsamic dressing on the Turkish salad and the salty, creamy hummus, there was a bit of a missed opportunity here. But overall, each component had really nice, developed flavors. TURKISH HOT POMEGRANATE TEA: This tea was very good, but for $2 was a bit pricey for the size of the drink. The pomegranate flavor really came out and helped cut through the heartiness of the entree. BAKLAVA: The dessert had a great, flaky phyllo dough and a sweet, crunchy filling. The baklava was buttery and crispy, but still light. It came out a bit cold, but with a complex texture and rich flavor. They ran out of frozen yogurt and used ice cream substitute, which didn't really do much for me. Overall, I think that Sultan Kebab is a great option for anyone in the market for authentic Turkish food in Charlottesville. Definitely will be coming back in the future! read more

It is worth trying especially when the tomato sauce mixes with the yogurt, it is an unbelievable flavor. The crunchiness ofthe pita bread pieces adds another dimension. Lastly, you must get the kunefe. This traditional dessert popular in Turkey and the Middle East will change your life. I can't even think of an American dish that I can compare to. We, as a Turkish family, did not really like the food. Especially, when we compare the food with other Turkish restaurants in the U.S... My boyfriend and I came here for lunch. We started with the Halloumi cheese and Turkish coffee with Turkish Delights. We loved the grilled cheese, but the coffee was very grainy and was very thick from the bottom. For food, we both ordered the chicken shish kebob platter and both of our chicken was EXTREMELY stringy and we could barely chew onto it. We told the owner about it and he was kind enough to bring us a platter of lamb for my boyfriend (I was not in the mood to try anything different after that point). He didn't think the lamb was any better anyways. I loved the rice and hummus that came with the platter so I just ate that. Service was good as we were the only ones there. Will I return here again? Such a gem in Charlottesville - we need more places like this! Came with a big group and they were super accommodating. Food came out quickly too! I got the Iskender platter - delicious marinated beef and lamb over rice, yogurt, and salad. It was amazing - HUGE portions too. My husband got the lamb shish kebab platter - and I had some ordering envy. Generous cuts of amazingly flavored lamb. We also got some appetizers to share - including my favorite, the lahmacun pizza, and the baba ganoush. The lahmacun was so good - and really even better with the baba ganoush sauce! The food is so delicious, we tried their famous Adana and Chicken kebabs, Lahmachun, cogara borek and hummus with cheese. Omg I didnt know I can handle such a big amount of food lol. There seems to be only one server, but he was still good about asking us for our orders pretty quickly. We ordered the lamb kebab and beef kebab, which both come with rice, salad, hummus, and bread. It's definitely a good amount for the price ($10-12), and I like that there's a lot of variety on each plate. The food itself was typical kebabs, nothing super special to be honest, but still good! Seven of us enjoyed different dishes and all of us were pleased. The food was flavorful, fresh and just delicious. It awakened my Middle Eastern genes, and made every cell in my body happy! We enjoyed Lamajun, Lamb shish kebab sandwich, the Adana Kebab Sandwiches, Adana platter, the chicken shish kebab platter, the Aegean salad with Adana and the Izmir Kofte platter....and apple tea, of course. I've eaten here a few times now and its never disappointed me. Everything I've had here is delicious, from the bread to the sides. Last time I had the chicken and lamb combination platter, it was fantastic and a great portion. The sucuk, which I did not expect to like, was also delicious, both on the sandwich and as a platter. The service has also been great every time, our server on Sunday took his time to explain the menu and made some great recommendations. The Turkish coffee is also amazing, great way to end any meal. I came to visit Monticello and stopped here for lunch. Im from Northern Va but this place is so good! Truly authentic Turkish food. There are so many turkish restaurants in northern Va but none of them tasted like this one. The food here tasted so fresh and it was super healthy, not oily like other places. The salad was clean and the lettuce fresh unlike other places where they serve me dried up, dead lettuce leafs. Customer service was very good as well, and didnt feel rushed at all. For our first meal in Charlottesville, we tried Sultan Kabob, a place our local friends had heard about but not tried yet. We were happy to find that it was very reasonably priced, and the interior was clean and modern. I especially liked the murals on both main walls of the place and the wide wall of windows. The server was kind and polite, and we were waited on by many others who brought out food and refilled drinks throughout our stay. I did note that they didn't offer us a second beer at any point, but that may have been due to the fact they were closing soon. The food was delicious! We got the grilled haloumi cheese to start, which was a small portion, but so savory and tasty. Fiancé and friend's fiancé both got the lamb and beef sausage combo platter, which came with rice, salad, hummus and pita. My friend got a platter with thinly sliced beef and rice and salad. I got the Mediterranean salad with beef meatballs on top. A solid choice, as the salad was good but the dressing was subtle, so the meat provided a good kick to the dish. For dessert, we got baklava which came with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream - it was a wonderful addition to the flavor of the baklava's pistachio, honey and phyllo dough. I would recommend this place for a nice low key dinner out, especially if you don't want to get swept up in the hubbub of the downtown mall. It was super cute, and definitely had great food. If you haven't tried Turkish food, you're missing out, because it is delicious. We were at Carter Mountain and wanted to stop someplace for lunch, but wanted to avoid the downtown mall. Yelp led us here and it didn't disappoint. The baba ganoush was a bit different from what I've had at other Mediterranean places. I think it had yogurt in it (not sure, but it was fantastic). My kid who would never eat eggplant devoured this dish. It is quite a big portion, but they only gave us a few pieces of bread. We had to keep asking for bread so that we could eat every single bite. My salad was great, but although Kalamata olives were listed as an ingredient on the menu, they weren't on my salad. The honey/pomegranate dressing was light and delicious, however, so I forgive them. My husband tried the doner kebab and really enjoyed it. All in all, this is definitely worth a try.
