I had excellent dental care growing up until I was about 14, but I also had a traumatic experience as a child when I flipped over my bike, knocked several teeth out, and had to be strapped into a chair while a dentist worked on them. That experience stayed with me. After my parents divorced, going to the dentist stopped being a priority, and despite brushing my teeth every day, I avoided dental visits for years. Eventually, I started having tooth pain and assumed I had one bad tooth. It turned out I needed two root canals and multiple fillings. To say I was terrified would be an understatement. One of the biggest fears about returning to the dentist after a long time is the feeling that you'll be judged. Dr. French completely erased that fear. She has been nothing but kind, compassionate, and genuinely caring from day one. She's the type of person who instantly makes you feel comfortable, and honestly, she's just an incredibly cool person. The hygienists and the rest of the staff are just as wonderful. Every single person in the office is warm, welcoming, and makes you feel like they genuinely care about you. The office itself is beautiful and has such a calming atmosphere. Then there's the fear of pain. I can honestly say I experienced virtually none. Dr. French referred me to Dr. Baines at San Jose Endodontics for my root canals, and I couldn't have asked for a better referral. Both root canals were completely painless. They prescribed ibuprofen afterward, and I never even needed it. Back at Willow Glen Dental, I was also genuinely impressed by how much they've invested in technology. It's not just a beautiful office--it feels like they've made a real commitment to giving patients the best experience possible. After my root canals, they digitally scanned my teeth, designed my crowns, and milled them right there in the office. I took about an hour to an hour-and-a-half break, came back, and had both permanent crowns placed that same day. No temporary crowns. No waiting weeks. As someone who hadn't been to the dentist in years, I had no idea dentistry had come this far, and it made the entire process incredibly convenient. The same was true for my fillings and every other procedure I've had. Throughout every appointment, the team made sure I was comfortable, answered every question, and never rushed me. Yesterday I finished the restorative portion of my treatment plan after about a year and a half of care. Dr. French joked, "Last round!" and then laughed that I was probably tired of seeing them. I surprised myself with my response: "Honestly... I used to have really bad dental anxiety, and now I don't." And I truly meant it. That's one of the greatest gifts this office has given me. They didn't just fix my teeth--they completely changed how I feel about going to the dentist. I never thought I'd be someone who could walk into a dental appointment feeling relaxed, but that's exactly how I feel now. The staff has always been professional and helpful, so this review is not meant to say that everything is bad. I'm simply sharing my point of view about what happened today. I had a 3:00 PM appointment and I fully acknowledge that I arrived late. The office called me at 3:10 PM asking if I was nearby, and I told them I was already very close. They called me again while I was arriving, and I walked into the office at approximately 3:17 PM. At that point, I was told that the doctor could no longer see me and that I would have to reschedule. I understand there may be a 10-minute grace period and I was 7 minutes beyond that. However, I was already right outside when they called me. I had rushed back from work in Santa Cruz, dealt with Friday traffic, used my time and gas, and sometimes patients even have to leave work early to make an appointment. My wife, my daughter, and I are all patients here, and we have always been understanding when the office runs behind. There have been times when I've waited 5-10 minutes in the lobby or 10 minutes or more after being seated, and I've never complained because I understand that delays happen. That is really my only point: consideration should go both ways. I take responsibility for being late, but completely losing an appointment over those extra few minutes, especially when I was already arriving, felt disappointing. Again, this is a good and professional team, and I appreciate the care we have received here. I'm only sharing one experience and my personal perspective. I hope the same understanding patients give the office when delays happen can also be extended to patients when reasonable circumstances cause us to run a few minutes behind.

I have horrible teeth. I know, I know-- look at my smile and you'll think, "What is she talking…read moreabout?" (not to be cocky). But seriously, I've had over 50 cavities and one root canal in my short 21 years of living. I don't eat a lot of sweets, and I take great care of my teeth, but my enamel sucks. I think it's because when I was young I was sick all of the time and spent too much time in the hospital, so my enamel never formed correctly. So despite my efforts, I always have a cavity or two every time I go to the dentist. Damn my soft, sensitive teeth!! I've gone through a LOT of dentists, and I mean a LOT. Most of the time I just try them once and never return because they're such assholes. I hate it when dentists take my oral hygiene personally. Like, they think they're my dad or something (Crappy dentist: "You aren't brushing your teeth good enough! *sigh of frustration* Don't you care about your teeth!? Here, watch this video on teeth brushing!! *puts on instructional video meant for 5 year olds*"). I also hate it when dentists don't listen to you or address your concerns. I went to one dude who refused to anesthetize me while he was doing a periodontal cleaning (read = scraping my gums), my gums were bleeding like crazy and I cried the whole time and he STILL refused to give me something for the pain. What an ass! Couldn't he have at least given me a topical anesthetic? Anyway, one day I got a flyer for Dr. Watanabe. "Aw what the heck," I thought. I needed to see a dentist anyway. So I made an appointment. About two years later, I'm still seeing Dr. Watanabe and I can honestly say that I love my dentist. I don't dread going to the dentist anymore. He's kind, considerate, gentle and knowledgeable. He listens to your concerns and answers any questions in a thoughtful manner. Most importantly, he knows what he's doing. He explains what he does and why he's doing it, and whatever he does, he does it RIGHT. He's also just a cool guy overall. You can tell that when he talks to you while he's drilling, he's just an easy-going, friendly guy and having conversations with him come naturally; it doesn't feel forced or awkward at all. He went to UC Berkeley and he has a lot of interesting stories to entertain you with. He's also pretty understanding. There have also been several times where I've missed appointments and I was never charged for not keeping them. Dr. Watanabe not only does "regular" dentistry, but also orthodontics, invisalign, and aesthetic dentistry (veneers, bleaching, etc). So you can see him for all your dentistry needs-- hurray! :D Overall, I can't recommend Dr. Watanabe enough. Even though I've relocated to Hayward, I still continue to be his patient. The drive is definitely worth it. I don't think I'll ever find a dentist as good as Dr. Watanabe, so I hope he doesn't retire for a long time. EDIT (5/26/09)***: I forgot to mention that his staff is also great, especially his dental assistant. I always forget her name, but she's always so kind and friendly!

By failing to ensure the crown was in possession and ready for the appointment Dignity Dental wasted my time that day. I rescheduled and asked for a discount on my bill as a gesture to make me whole for my missed time. After scheduling I got the confirmation email also reminding me about their $100 fee. I received no such discount on my bill. By their lack of ensuring my crown was ready and making no gesture to make up for my time has afforded them this two star review.

I'm experiencing tooth pain again only 2 months after receiving treatment from them, which raises concerns about the quality. I brush twice a day and floss daily, so it's not a hygiene issue on my end. Cost: I had three composite fillings and ended up paying $253 out of pocket, while my insurance covered $701. That's a steep total, especially considering the results. Now I want to go in for a cleaning and check-up, but they told me I'd have to pay entirely out of pocket because my insurance benefits are maxed out. I've never had this issue with my previous dentist, even with similar treatments. I only chose this office because I recently moved, but I'll probably go back to my old dentist--even if it's a long drive. It's just not worth the cost and uncertainty here.
