Another one in the books for a delish tasty shawarma experience. I was really craving this today and after making some nearby stops at middle eastern shops, hubby & headed to Shawarma Row on Lawrence Avenue E, Scarborough. We looked through several menus and reviews and this is what brought me to Sumaq Iraqi Charcoal Grill and they did not disappoint! This was an outstanding shawarma! I ordered the veal shawarma wrap, the meat was freshly sliced and seasoned so incredibly well. I chose tabbouleh, sumac onions, garlic sauce, tahini, pom sauce and pickled turnips as my toppings. Everything was perfectly balanced with no overload of sauces or veggies. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, the veal was tender, juicy, and packed with flavour. The pomegranate sauce took the wrap to another level -- perfectly balanced and truly unforgettable. Everything was wrapped in warm, freshly baked tanoor bread that tied it all together beautifully. The bread is lightly toasted giving it the perfect crunch on your first bite, but still soft throughout the sandwich. Service was quick and efficient, making it an easy go-to spot when you want something delicious without the wait. Walk in, place your order, including all your toppings. When you order is ready a bell rings and your order number announced. The whole team was working quick and getting the orders out quickly. A seriously tasty shawarma sandwich that will keep you coming back for more! This was so good that hubby ordered a second and tried the chicken which comes in spicy or non-spicy. Also available, combo plates, party platters and catering. Highly recommended!

Instagram made me do it. After seeing countless mouthwatering reels of overflowing wraps and sizzling meat from Sumag, I had to try it. The food looked like a solid 5-star experience. But when I finally visited, reality didn't quite match the online hype. The wrap I ordered was decent but lacked the flavor explosion I expected. The meat was okay, but not as juicy or well-seasoned as it appeared on social media. The presentation was also less impressive in person. After my visit, I checked Yelp and noticed Sumaq has a 3.7-star rating. That seems more accurate. This experience reminded me why I trust Yelp reviews more than social media posts. There's nothing worse than being misled by overhyped content and ending up disappointed. Yelp If you're nearby and curious, Sumaq might be worth a try. But manage your expectations and don't rely solely on Instagram for recommendations.

Sumaq is the top shawarma spot in the GTA for me--no competition. I've used it for so many big moments: my best friend's bridal shower, a post-wedding debrief, even celebrating a friend's conversion. It's always come through, whether for a casual meal or a special occasion. I'm lucky to be closer to the Scarborough location because, from what I've heard, it's miles better than the Mississauga one. The service is great. The only downside is the limited seating, but honestly, I don't mind when the food is this good. I always go for the full roll--nothing beats eating it fresh. The cut-up platter doesn't hit the same, but it's clutch for parties and get-togethers. If you go, do yourself a favour and get the Iraqi veal shawarma. Highly recommend!

    Mixed plate and chicken Tikka!

Idk why people gave a 3.8* here. Food was exceptional! I had the chicken Tikka and it was BANGINNNN. So much flavour. I loved all of it but special Shout-out to the rice that had 2 flavours: orange was a little spicier but the other side was just as complex. Staff are fast but orders are slow because it's always popular here. 10pm and everyone's still crammed in the store waiting for their orders. Ambiance is extremely casual. It's a little bit of a greasy spoon shop. People come in hoodies and sweats because these portions are great and the food is so delicious! They also give free pita bread with your order :)

Mixed shawarma on tandoor bread (chicken, veal)

It gets busy here at lunch, which is a good sign. You can either dine in or get takeout. The mixed shawarma wrap with tandoor bread was top notch - Torontonians, please direct your fellow Ottawa friends here the next time they say that our shawarma sucks and their's is superior. You can choose whether to have spice or no spice in the wrap. The potatoes with garlic sauce was decent, but the sauce tasted more like sour cream and could use more garlic flavour. I'll be back to try more items next time I need a late night meal or another lunch!

This is everything they filled the wraps with ...

I went in with a friend for an impromptu stop-in after seeing much about this place on social media. We both bought 2 wraps: one veal (9.99) and one chicken (9.49) ... Quickly the joint started to fill up with people dropping orders. Enticed by the promise of charcoal character ... We weren't disappointed, it wasn't overpowering but added to the overall seasoning and depth. The wrap was delicious and filling packed with protein, salad, picked toppings and garlic sauce. My friend got veal, loved it more than the chicken -- it was tender and felt more tasty than the chicken. However the chicken was enjoy by myself. Sorry didn't take a pic, we devoured the wraps. The bread made in the tandoor was a wrap so fresh, it was so not hard to eat and wasn't thick just tender. A perfect balance between lil carb component and the fillings. Highly recommend.

Yup, this is a great late night spot to hit your shawarma cravings. It's a unique twist to shawarma flavours. The portions are big and it has everything you need to hit all your cravings: protein, potatoes, salad, garlic sauce/hummus, and rice. I really really appreciate the amount of sauce they give you being a saucy girl. I'll have to come back to try the wraps and kebabs! I have heard the line and wait could get pretty lengthy - going at midnight wasn't much of a wait! The only qualm I have is the price for the plate is quite pricey. It looks like a lot but if you take off the layer of meat, it isn't as much as it seems compared to other places.

I think these place redeemed themselves I got the chicken shawarma and you have to order it the supreme way luckily I didn't wait in line I was at home, and the wrap is huge, the supreme way is worth it they top it off with extra chicken at the top with no extra cost, and what I appreciate it about this place is they make their own Tanoor bread, their service will not be great because they have so many people ordering so it's understandable, i took me less than two minutes to finish the shawarma, The bread was so tasty you have to get the tandoor bread, juicy chicken, and I think they out coleslaw adds a sweetness and acidity to the shawarma. This is a massive wrap and it's definitely worth the price, it's up there as one of the best but I still think alphas is the top dawg but this place comes pretty close, one is huge two people can eat it.

    Angie L.

Sumaq Iraqi Charcoal Grill offers generous portions and high quality shawarma. I got the beef wrap and chicken shawarma plate and found that the meats were juicy and aromatic. If you order anything from here, you can expect to be satisfied with a hearty, filling meal. The down side is that wait times can be long. There's also a few tables to dine at but considering the traffic of the restaurant, you may have to find a place to eat elsewhere. The overall Sumq Iraqi Charcoal Grill is definitely a must-try.

Unfortunately I left with a strong sense of disappointment. We ordered beef shawarma that was dry and dull (though I concede that if we had gotten the house made hot sauce it would have likely been fire), and then ordered two skewers of shrimp with some sides. The seafood is served from a secondary restaurant to the beef/ chicken one - and though they didn't seem incredibly busy, we waited 45 minutes for two skewers! The more frustrating aspect was that I definitely saw people order and receive their food before me. When I asked, I was told that people had preordered food before coming, and while that may be the case I refuse to believe that two skewers took 45 minutes. I would have understood if someone told me they forgot about my order or they had a problem with the kitchen, but none such explanation happened. They didn't even apologize and the cashier seemed to actively avoid me, and instead busied herself by chatting with friends or cleaning up the odd table. In the end we only received the food after we actively started to leave without it. If there was a friendlier service experience I would go back and give them a second chance, but the cashier's attitude really put me in a bad place. I hope that this was a one off especially since they seem to have such a loyal clientele.

Well-lit, slightly modern looking decor, comfy atmosphere that's pretty casual. Lots of different people helped us out, took our order, brought food etc. but it felt like the service while good, was just slightly below great. We got the veggie clay pot and the mixed grill to share between two people, and my son got a fattoush salad and the kebbeh. The mixed grill was great, all the meats were flavourful, and tender/juicy. It came with a lamb/beef kebab, some beef tenderloin, and some chicken. I think there were roast potatoes too, but my memory is a bit fuzzy on that part. The veggie stew was poured onto a plate of bulgur and was really really good. Lots of flavour, all the veggies (carrots, cauliflower, onions, etc.) were tender. the juices ran through the bulgur which made for a great side dish to go with the meat. The kebbeh was tasty but still a bit disappointing -- there were only three, and didn't feel like quite enough to make a meal. Luckily the fattoush salad was huge otherwise my son would have left the restaurant hungry. Compared to some of the dishes we saw on other tables, this dish seems to be an outlier in terms of quantity of food, and it's certainly not worth the $28 price; I wouldn't recommend it. Despite the disappointment with the one meal, all the food was delicious and I still felt like the meal on the whole was good value, and I wouldn't mind going back to try some of their other dishes.

It was not salty despite its look. Batata Harra (spicy potatoes) were good: a bit crispy. The dish also came with bread (for the baba ganoush, maybe) so don't overload on carbs with your choice of sides. The bread was a bit old & pre packaged but I just took it as a bonus anyway. The baba ganoush itself was decent. Portions are big here. If you choose mixed vegetables they're just tossed with olive oil and garlic. The red sauce on the side was slightly spicy - more tart.
