The Summer House Santa Monica was a last-minute find for my group and me, and luckily, we were able to snag a last-minute reservation! From start to finish, even though we were in a bit of a hurry, everything was amazing. I went with the Prickly Pear drink, which was not only delicious but also such a fun photo moment. I love me a gorgeous drink! The Parmesan Truffle Fries were some of the best truffle fries I've had -- the perfect amount of flavor without being overpowering. I'm usually a little skeptical when it comes to ordering seafood, even local fish at restaurants, but I decided to go with the Crispy Baja Fish Tacos... and oh my goodness, they were SO good! Perfectly flaky, flavorful, and served piping hot. They were fantastic -- and the fact that I was still feeling great hours later was an absolute win for me! Our server, I believe her name was Stori, was wonderful. She knew from the beginning that we were in a bit of a rush and somehow made the evening feel relaxed and enjoyable while handling a busy restaurant with so much grace. 1 Star -- Great atmosphere, disappointing food and service Summer House has clearly figured out how to create a beautiful, energetic Chicago brunch scene. Unfortunately, the food and service don't come close to matching the hype, and this was one of the more disappointing breakfasts I've had in the city. I ordered the three-egg breakfast with an English muffin, sausage and hash browns. I specifically requested the hash browns well done. What arrived were cold, rubbery, obviously pre-made hash browns that were among the worst I've ever been served. When I asked about making a substitution on one of the breakfast burritos, I was told it wasn't possible because the burritos are pre-made. That's a pretty significant red flag for a restaurant charging these prices and presenting itself as a quality brunch destination. The sausage was nothing special, although the English muffin--advertised as homemade--was perfectly fine. The bigger issue is that the meal felt assembled rather than cooked to order. Service wasn't much better. Drink service was slow enough that our server came around asking about refills literally as we were paying the check. To her credit, she did offer iced teas to go, which was a nice recovery. They also accommodated us when we arrived about 25 minutes early, and I appreciated that. I have also worked as a "secret shopper" for Lettuce Entertain You, so I know their service protocols. One of the things I was specifically trained to watch for was the proper checkback. The expectation isn't for a server to ask, "How's everything tasting?" The assumption is that the kitchen has already done its job and that the food is being served correctly. The appropriate checkback is essentially, "Can I bring you anything else?" This did not happen. That distinction matters. Asking "How's everything tasting?" immediately suggests that the server is checking on the quality of the food rather than following the service protocol. During my time as a "secret shopper," that would have been a clear indication that the server needed additional training. And in this case, considering the cold, rubbery hash browns and the pre-made nature of some of the food, perhaps the quality of the kitchen deserves some attention too. The bottom line: Summer House has a great atmosphere, but atmosphere isn't food. It feels like a place where the crowd is more interested in the room and the experience than whether the breakfast on the plate is actually good. You can get a substantially better breakfast at countless Chicago diners for less money, without the hype. Beautiful room. Busy scene. They did accommodate us early. But the food was poor, the drink service was disappointing, and the value simply isn't there. read more

While the service and atmosphere there was great, lively, and bright, the food we had, not so much unfortunately (nothing against the birthday boy for selecting the menu choices haha) The brusselsprout and burrata apps were fine, nothing special. The entrees were more of the disappointment. First we were served the spicy rigatoni - portions were lacking, dish was underseasoned, and the pasta and peas were undercooked. The rigatoni itself was more al dente than im used to/prefer so heads up there. I personally like firm noodles so not a problem but it was a big tougher than I would've liked. What really made me consider whether it was overall undercooked was the fact that the peas were nearly raw. Most of them had an unpleasant hard texture in each bite The mushroom pizza was up next - crust was nice and crispy but the filling was extremely overpowered by something that I couldnt put my finger on.. I believe it was an herb, assumedly rosemary, that just made having a second slice hard to keep down Finally the fish tacos - the most visually appealing of the 3. Despite its appearance, they were also a let down. The tortillas were dry, the tacos themselves were bland, and the star, the fish, was nonexistent. I ate one where it was basically just all breading. The second time around I got a bit more fish but it was also dry and lacking sauce to balance it Ultimately everything looked better than it tasted. The saving grace for my visit there though was the cookie I got from the cookie bar they have out front. Bright and airy; the glass ceiling allows so much natural light to filter through adding to the atmosphere. The exceptional service that Matt provided truly elevated my dining experience. He provided so much knowledge of the menu and recommended certain items to enhance the meal. He also suggested items to try on a next visit. There will definitely be a next visit. Fancy, picture perfect mocktails just might fool an onlooker. The drinks were fresh, fruity a little spicy and alcohol free. Please grab the jalapeño cornbread. It's the perfect balance of sweet and spicy with corn kernels and sliced peppers topped with a finishing salt. Just perfect. The deviled eggs were so tasty that I just know someone's Big Momma is in that kitchen! Next visit I'm looking for her. My wagyu steak taco platter was outstanding. Usually, there is some part of a platter I don't care for. Not this time. I can tell the tender meat was marinated as there was flavor coming through each bite. The sautéed peppers and onions added even more flavor. Served with warm, rolled corn tortillas, sour cream, cheese and guacamole to top it off. In the center was perfectly cooked cilantro rice and creamy black beans. Couldn't eat it all, but it made a nice lunch for the next day. I suggest you do NOT leave the restaurant without stopping by the Cookie Bar for a sweet treat. I love this place, and I don't repeat restaurants a ton in Chicago since there are so many but this is a place I've returned to several times. The restaurant is so cute inside and it has a fun little cookie/bakery stand in the foyer when you walk in. this was my first time here for brunch instead of dinner. The menu is a great size for brunch with breakfast options that have a lot of Mexican influence, as well as a good portion of sandwiches, salads, pizza, for the more lunchy aspects. All our food was amazing. Service was a bit on the slow side but I feel like that's to be expected at really busy restaurants- the food and drink just take a bit longer to come out but I promise it's worth the wait read more

This place was #1 on my open table app and I am so glad we came here!!! First of all, get a table on the middle because the skylight is beautiful! The color decor is beautiful!!! We had the guacamole and crab roll . . We shared the crab roll and at first I thought it was too small and we would need to order more but with the sweet potato fries, it was perfect! We had a lovely brunch at summer house! The restaurant itself looks like a large greenhouse in the center, lots of natural lighting and earthy light decor. Our waitress was kind and enthusiastic! I ordered the vegetable hash which was tasty, beets were a bit unexpected but good, portion size was just enough. My friend and I were looking for a dinner spot before a show at the Steppenwolf. This place was highly rated on Yelp so we decided to check them out. Summer House is an excellent spot! Definitely make a reservation for dinner. This place is located on a super busy street. The interior makes you feel like you are at a beach house. Our server was Mallory and she was excellent. She was super friendly and attentive. Margarita was refreshing. They have cocktails, limited beer list, mocktails, and wine. Chicken tacos were seasoned wonderfully. If you have room for dessert, get a cookie. They have a ton of choices. My friend and I shared an m and m as well as a sea salt chocolate chip. Tried this place for the first time when I was in Chicago for St. Patrick's day, and I couldn't recommend it more. We were there on a busy Friday night, and easily had the best seat in the house. We started with espresso martinis and moved on to spritz for the second round. Incredible espresso martini!!! The Parmesan fries were a 10/10 girl dinner snack. I don't love deviled eggs but these ones were SO good? Absolutely amazing. I split the vodka pasta (which they split for me and my partner!) and a burrata pizza. We FEASTED. We decided to go out for dinner last minute on Valentines Day. We had no reservations anywhere but knew Summer House would be our best option because their space is gigantic with seating everywhere. Plus it has a delicious menu. We instantly found a spot to sit at by the bar. We shared the Spicy Kale Caesar and Prime Cheeseburger. We hadn't stopped talking about the Spicy Kale Caesar since the first time we ordered it a few months ago because it was delicious. This time was no different, best salad I've ever had. The Prime Cheeseburger came on a crispy brioche and was cooked perfectly. Our food came out already portioned to be shared so we didn't need to ask for extra plates. We stopped in for brunch on a Saturday. It is a beautiful space, but I was disappointed to see that the table we were sat at had crumbs and one of our chairs had food on it (pics included). We started with a White Chocolate Raspberry latte ($5.50). It was really lacking in flavor at first, but once we stirred it up, we realized that the syrup had just settled to the bottom. The atmosphere, ambiance, and decor were all really nice, and the service was great throughout. Unfortunately, the food itself was kind of disappointing. At 6:00pm on a weekday, it was pretty packed so I definitely recommend making a reservation. The staff was very friendly and provided great recommendations. I opted for the sunset boulevard to start, which was refreshing and mild-flavored. For the main event, I ordered the herbed chicken breast paillard, which was far from being the "healthy but boring" dish. The chicken was pounded extremely thin and cooked perfectly, with an extra crispy char revealing a super tender interior. It was generously seasoned with spices and the bright citrus flavor was a slap in the face of zesty goodness. The arugula salad was also very good with a spicy and flavorful dressing. I had high hopes but I wasn't blown away. This place is cute for the aesthetics. However, the food was just OK. We had a bit of a wait so we got a cookie to start with. The guy behind the counter had recommended the snickerdoodle which was a bit more battery than I had hoped.For the food we got salmon poke nachos, shrimp spaghetti limone pasta, and the shaved mushroom pizza to share. Again, it felt like your basic Italian food and nothing that special. I also think that they overcooked the pizza as it was a bit burnt on the crust and the bottom. The price is here are really high and I understand it's Chicago, but I think there are a ton of other places to try. The ambience is nice for a date night or girls night out, but I was not that impressed with the food. Usually, the staff comes around to ask how the food is, but they were busy and didn't really come around once the food was set down. They probably should have seen the pizza and taken it back or asked about it. You could also tell from the poke nachos that they were really soggy and not flavorful because we left so much of it still there. For the prices since it had seafood, I was expecting much better for a nicer restaurant. I did stop by a few weeks later to try another cookie since I was in the area. And had the Dubai chocolate cookie, which was actually really good so I wonder now if each cookie is a little different in texture and flavor. I didn't know what to expect with the first one, but the second one was better. You walk in and you're greeted by a California San Diego open concept with the skylight shining into the middle of the dining room. Plants and hipster signs line the ceilings and the walls - you seriously feel like you're in a California beach house. The place was PACKED and bursting at the seams, and they seemed just a tad understaffed. The waiters were still trying their best and were so efficient! We started with the Parmesan truffle fries, which were honestly a bit too overcooked, thin, and a bit shriveled and hard. The truffle aioli itself was delicious though! The shaved mushroom pizza was actually delicious - the Gruyère, onion, truffle, parm cream, and parsley melted together so well, and it was a nice change to the usual red sauce pizza. It's a super thin crust. We also tried the Mexican hashbrowns, which was quite delicious with the tomato salsa, mostly crispy hash brown, poached eggs, and avocado. One egg was perfectly poached, and the other was hardened, but I don't mind. Overall, I still rate this high because it's just such a cute spot for a brunch with friends!! It gives summer in Italy on the water type vibes. Always bustling with people. I came for dinner in the Fall and it was nice. My friend was I shared a mushroom pizza with a side of truffle fries. I love mushrooms so trust that I'm bias when I say I loved the pizza. Not too cheesy, bready or greasy. Perfect amounts in all areas. You get a decent amount of slices for $20 and the size of the pie is nice. The fries were skinny like Steak 'n Shake but the flavor was on par. They did not skimp on the truffle. I'm a frequent patron of Summer House Santa Monica. This is a place I like to go when I have guests in town, or for a girly brunch/night out. The interior garden is beautiful with lots of natural light, I much prefer it to the bar area seating. The food is good, but leave some room for dessert because the cookie bar is extensive and they all look so enticing. Easily one of the best interior settings in the Chicago restaurant business. This space is wide open from end-to-end, and emphasizes natural lighting. It would easily fit in Santa Monica, CA, as the name suggests. Chicago is lucky to have it! The menu is very special, and each dish has ingredients that elevate them to next level.
