I have been taking my pet rabbit here for nail trims every couple months for a little over a year. I really loved this place at first. Per the usual, you pay an exam fee up front. I think it was around $100. After that, her nail trims were about $18 each time. At the year mark and every year after, you do the $100 or so exam. That's all fine. Today I went in for her usual nail trim, and they added a $28 "technician visit" charge. So instead of $18, my total was $49.64 for a nail trim that took no more than 10 minutes. I am so disappointed. Times are already tough, and I'm just trying to be a good bunny mom. Edit: The store manager, Kay, is very professional and helped sort the situation out. My littler brother came here & took our beloved bird of 7 years to simply exam her, due to her acting a bit more lethargic and irritable. They had told him that from the physical exam that she looked medically fine, but did appear overweight. The doctor then told him they will run some blood work but didn't acknowledge the high risk of getting blood in the first place. 2 min later they run in saying she was in cardiac arrest & because she was bleeding so much they couldn't save her. In my opinion, the staff seemed unexperienced. On top of that, the front staff women rushed him out the door practically with their ingenuity of an apology. Bird owners find somewhere else. The other bird owner's poor reviews ring true. This place is over priced and unless you pay hundreds to thousands on test they don't know enough about birds to diagnose. I've brought my green cheek in for routine annual check ups so I can board her, and I basically fork out the cash so I can get the certificate. That's it. Service for routine care is bland and leaves nothing to be remembered. You're a number. Now for the best part, a few weeks back I had a sick silkie chicken in. After 5 minutes of looking at her my options given were to euthanize her or spend hundreds to run tests. Either way the vet immediately went with worst case possible (maerks disease). I couldn't afford a $800+ medical bill for a sick pet chicken, and I was actually minutes away from signing the paper work to pay over $100 just to euthanize her and have her body properly disposed of when, for a shot in the dark I gave the chickens breeder a call. The breeder told me about molasses and how it could help with wryneck as it was likely a vitamin deficiency issue. (Vitamin deficiencies im chickens can cause mobility and even neurological problems.) I asked the vet if this was a possibility that we could try, and she said-- I quote, " sugar water isn't going to help this." After just five minutes of reading about wryneck in silkies and the potential for treatment I pulled her out of there. The vet didn't know anything about vitamin deficiencies for my chicken, I get that it is an unusual animal, but don't say you treat that type of animal if you don't know anything about common issues that are highly preventable. They acted like they took great offense to me pulling my care, vet saying, " I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see that there's likelihood that she's going to survive with home treatments." I signed that scary waiver saying that I was pulling care against their recommendations, took her home and started the molasses treatment. Two weeks later, I'm proud to say within three days my chicken is fully healthy and back with the flock again. It wasn't some "uncurable disease", it was a vitamin deficiency, one that was treated with a three dollar bottle of molasses from the grocery store. (Vet bill $200+). Oh and the beat part of all this? The vet told me they would call me the next day to check in and see how she was doing. They never did. Not a single call. Apparently they really didn't care at all about her end result, they got their money and that's all that mattered to them. After coming here new, my dog always gets cytopoint and rabies vaccinations at her normal vet. Had a horrible horrible reaction at summertree, prob using off label stuff. Had to be seen in emergency clinic afterwards , spoke with management, and provided no customer service to rectify the issue. Also was told that if I was 10 minutes late, would not be seen. No one else in the office, and had to wait additional 30 minutes. Came out of the room and even asked where the vet was. When she came into the room, seemed like she had absolutely no experience or idea what was happening! Would strongly recommend going somewhere else, where they would provide better results for your babies! All they are after is your money, not care! Will never go back! read more

I have been taking my parrot to Summertree for about 23 years. A few months ago he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and his blood work was all over the charts. In short the vet said he is on hospice and when his quality of life is too bad we can put him down. Due to the kidney cancer his beak grows very quickly. So I took him in just for a beak trim so he could eat properly. All I asked for was a beak trim and was charged for and exam and office visit for $74. I just want to make him comfortable so he could eat. Didn't need an exam just a trim. My opinion should have been $30 at most . I won't be going back and suggest you get the price before any procedure is done at Summertree. read more

Nice people but very unprofessional. I took my pet rat there because she becomes very weak, not able to eat solid food, not able to keep balance, and not able to hold food with her hands. The doctor suggested me to do euthanasia and told me that it's just because she is old and probably has cancer. The diagnosis is only based on watching and pinching, no testing results. After that I went to another animal hospital to see someone who is familiar with rodents. The doctor there told me my rats symptoms are CLASSIC symptoms of pituitary tumor, which can be relieved by oral medication. And after taking medication for 2 weeks, she is now able to walk. So, the diagnosis provided by the doctor here is wrong, and based on that she suggests euthanasia for over 10 times during our visit : ( read more

Guinea Pig owners look no further!!! What a wonderful first experience! Dr. Murray and her technician Kathleen were wonderful with our daughter's 3 1/2 month old Guinea Pig "Maya"! I highly recommend them for selective Guinea Pig owners. Even Brittany at check-in was pleasant and kind to check in with the Dr. to make sure we could be seen after a 15 minute delay from Tollway traffic. Kathleen was super patient, informative and reassuring. Our daughter had lost her first baby guinea only 2 1/2 weeks old after only having him for 10 days and was hyper sensitive and stressed with a little over active itching by her new GP that was several months older and stronger. Both she and Dr Murray let us drill them with questions as new owners! The manager replied in a timely manner when I reached out via Yelp. She followed up well. Our visit ended with being given helpful information and even a USB with the info on file to keep handy. I work for a top notch Dr's office myself guys. The ratings are right. Well done SummerTree. We are looking forward to bringing our other GP Saturday for her first well visit :) *UPDATE* Took my daughter's 2nd Guinea Pig "Penelope" for her first visit concern we might have a pregnant or male guinea! We've had to come back a few times for re-checks and each appt we've gotten to work with some amazing staff. Janna and Tia at the front desk have been super nice, very patient with me and welcoming to us. Rebeka and Sharonda are easy to work with, very nice and have been wonderful while handling my pet. My pet's doctor is Dr. Laura Brazelton. She was quick to come into the room and exam my pet and when I had to leave my pet at the office so test could be ran, Dr. Brazelton, herself called to give me an update. Everyone at this office that I've had the pleasure of working with have been very compassionate as well and again very patient with me, which I am so thankful for. read more

Our experience with this clinic, from the vet to the technician to the front desk staff, was nothing short of compliments. Even though our beloved parakeet of 9 years passed away, the expertise, care, and kindness that our pet received from Dr. Curfman and Stephanie was truly commendable. I'm not sure what the general cost would be for the kind of treatments we needed. The overall bill was pretty steep with blood test and surgery to remove a tumor on the preening gland, etc., but we were provided with detailed breakdown on each charge. Unfortunately our parakeet passed away a few days after surgery. We found out afterwards from the lab work that he was pretty ill and there really wasn't much that could've been done. Surgery or no surgery, the outcome still would've been the same. There are many animal clinics out there in the metroplex, but it's difficult to find one that knows avians really well. Having seen the knowledge and expertise the staff here possess, I'd highly recommend this clinic to other bird owners. read more

This place is like my second home and they've treated me and all of my animals like family from day 1. After I adopted a parrotlet almost 4 years ago, I moved her and my dog's care to Summertree and haven't looked back since. I've boarded both the bird and my dog here, sometimes on extremely short notice, and they took incredible care of them. When my bird got sick, she was seen same day, diagnosed, and put on meds. She recovered beautifully and gets her annual care here. As for my pup, my Westie had chronic medical conditions that were never under as excellent control as they were with Summertree looking out for her. Pre-diabetic? Low cost, low maintenance fix to get her back to being healthy. When it was time to let her go, I felt so much better knowing that the vets there knew me and they knew my Westie and they knew when it was time. It's been 14 months since I lost my beautiful Westie and now I bring the big-eared mutt from the shelter who stole my heart here to make sure he gets just as excellent veterinary care. They're not cheap and I won't sugar coat that lots of medical issues leads to big bills, but the attentiveness, care, compassion, competence, and skill of everyone who works here is unparalleled. read more

I just had to write another review as a follow up. So, I got my parakeet cremated. I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to receive the ashes in because they didn't explicitly say... So upon returning to pick up her remains, not only did I receive them in a beautiful engraved wooden box, I actually got a little molding of her foot print. I cried, I couldn't help it! I didn't know they were going to do this! It was the simplest of gifts but it was SO INCREDIBLY THOUGHTFUL. I just couldn't believe it. It doesn't end there! I then got a card in the mail from the clinic, which is already nice enough. I opened it to find an individual message written from every staff member telling me how sorry they were for my loss and that Birdy will be missed. It overwhelmed me, my heart sunk, AUGH THE FEELINGS!! Here I am, some crazy random lady who came in near closing time with an ill bird and somehow they managed to make me feel like I'd already established this extended rapport with them. I'd say I'm normally a cynic (and maybe I'm going way too in depth on this review haha, sorry...) but I try to be grateful for every act of human kindness because it is unfortunately so hard to find these days. These simple gestures meant the world to me. It's like, damn, they don't even know me, but they know the pain of losing a pet. I've been to too many clinics where the front desk ladies don't even make eye contact or take a breath after saying 'I'm so sorry' before they're clicking away on the computer for something else (you can tell I hold some bitter hostility towards insensitive service...) I'm leaving a one star review for Summertree to let bird owners know that this isn't a good place to take a sick bird. Summertree wasn't my first choice but my favorite place (Carrollton West Pet Hospital) didn't have any avian appointments available until the next week. First off, the Summertree vet didn't listen. I asked not to have typical disease testing done because I already have disease testing done on my birds. I asked for the CBC and toxicity testing. When I got results back, it was all disease testing (all negative) and it was over $350 wasted on tests that I already do and didn't give me the information I wanted. I complained that I specifically asked for CBC and toxicity testing...but they were like, oh well...sorry about that. Moving on, I brought my lovebird in for what looked to be an eye injury or infection. The vet noticed some type of contusion inside my birds mouth. The bird was treated with antibiotics and zero antifungals. I also took her in for a follow up appointment. The eye seemed to clear up but inside the mouth still had an abnormality. Three weeks later my bird was gasping for air and tail bobbing. I called Carrollton West Pet Hospital and they said bring her in as quickly as possible. I got there within 30 minutes and Dr. Champagne was near the reception desk and right away she suspected aspergillis. She noticed other things like the color of her beak showing she had low levels of oxygen. That is something I noticed weeks earlier when I had taken her to Summertree and I even commented that her beak seemed different. A quick examination was done and my bird was immediately put on oxygen. I left her overnight at the vet. At home, I did an internet search on aspergillis and learned some of the signs of aspergillis were the very signs that my bird had three weeks earlier...the eye, mouth and beak symptoms. I don't know if my bird would have survived aspergillis if she had been seen at Carrollton West first, but I believe she would have gotten a correct diagnosis and been treated correctly. I also would have gotten the blood tests I asked for. The Summertree vet completely missed something that I think she should have been aware of. There used to be a competent avian vet at Summertree (Dr. Hugh Hays). He has since retired and I believe the so-called avian vet I saw at Summertree might have been ok with a more experienced avian vet to consult with. There are no certified Avian vets at Summertree. I hesitate to add the following to my review because I don't want the following clinic to be associated in any way to a one star review. But you, the reader, may be checking reviews to learn if it is safe to bring your bird to the clinic you are reviewing. Please keep looking. Carrollton West Pet Hospital has an avian vet (Dr. Anna Osofsky) who has four years of additional avian specific study. There are very few veterinarians with that avian specialty. While Dr. Ashley Champaine does not have that specific avian designation, she is a very qualified avian veterinarian and I'm sure she and Dr. Osofsky together make Carrollton West Pet Hospital the very finest choice for avian care. Their only shortcoming is not having an avian vet on staff every single day. read more

All of this was a sad moment for me but other than that I just want to express how kind everyone was to me. I had to take my reptile for an emergency and he didn't make it, it was very hard for me and somehow they managed to make this experience a whole lot better. They let me go to a comfort room with him to have some alone time and to say our goodbyes. I paid for his Urn and they also offered me his hand print on clay for an additional charge. A while after I wasn't expecting anything and they sent me two heart cut-outs with seeds that you can paint and grow along with a letter and it was signed by all of the staff. I have been a customer of Summertree for 20 years - while it was under different ownership. They cared for 2 dogs and a cat who have since passed away and my current 2 dogs. We stayed even though we live in Irving because they have our pets records. Recently, one of my dogs was very sick - we made an appointment and my husband was late arriving because the dog was sick before he left home. Being late is not a common occurrence and this was an extenuating circumstance. He was turned away with our sick dog and told she could not be seen until the next day - late afternoon. When I spoke to the Partner today she said they are short handed and what was done had to be done - to turn us away with a very sick dog. This should tell you how very caring they are about their patients - when they have time Needless to say my pets will no longer go there. read more

One of the best avian vets in the area for sure. They only lose a star because of 2 things: 1) I believe their prices are on the high side. However, they seem to be willing to work with you if you can't afford the estimate they provide before rendering services. Be honest about what you can afford and see what they say. I believe they also offer credit if you qualify. and 2) I once called for an appointment and was told that BOTH avian vets were out of town. Since birds' conditions typically progress quickly and can get to a life threatening stage within hours in the wrong circumstances, having a vet available during all office hours is important. To their credit, they were able to refer me to another competent avian vet and assured me that it had never happened before and was unlikely to happen again. As far as service, knowledge, and "petside manner," they are in league with the best. They handled my rowdy, stranger-phobic parrot like pros and were extra gentle with my elderly cockatiel. At times, there were 3 assistants plus the Dr attending to my pets at once to assure their safety and comfort during routine procedures and exams. This, and the many other "small things" make it easier to overlook the higher than average bill. read more

I brought my bird here to get her very badly over grown nails cut. The place I had taken her before would only cut a tiny bit. But they were so hard to get in with I just gave up on them. So I brought my bird here and they were wonderful. They cut her nails back they look normal now. They were very friendly. And Dr. Wilson went above and beyond. I had a question about my birds molten she wasn't sure. After I left she went and looked it up and called me to let me know what was up. She didn't haft to do that.
