This is the very first review I have ever made on yelp or any other website but I am not only disgusted but amazed at the horrible treatment I have received from Marc at Summit Auto. And the result was also extremely dangerous . Going back about 17 years I used Summit for a few repairs and found them competent and trustworthy. Until recently I've had very little need for an auto mechanic but did use one a few times closer to where I live in Cobb. My experience and opinion of Summit now is they are not even remotely the same company and that Marc has become more and more arrogant, untrustworthy, and potentially corrupt as well. Before the holidays I took my 2017 Subaru Forester in for a problem I was having . The problem was that at higher speeds my front end started shaking, similar to the feel of a flat tire. I paid him $85.00 to "evaluate" the problem. Their diagnosis was that the left front shock absorber ( strut ) was the problem and it would cost me about $600.00 to have replaced and they would have to order the part. So I called back and simply asked if the part was in and tells me, that he didn't have time to look up whether everyone's part was in. Seriously. But he reluctantly called back and said it was in and I could bring the car in to have the shock replaced. Took it in and they quickly put the strut on. It looked to me like they were rushing a lot of people in and out before the holidays. I told him that I was driving to Louisiana for Christmas and was concerned that this job was done correctly. To make a horrible long story shorter, I drove to my Forester halfway to Louisiana, over 300 miles and at normal highway speeds it started shaking again, badly at any bump or grove in the road. It started at about 60 miles per hour. It was Christmas Eve and I had no way of finding someone to check it out, besides I was in the middle of nowhere. So, I drove 50 miles an hour between semi-trucks just trying to get there and back. Obviously I needed Marc to fix this, not some mechanic I didn't know that he would say messed up my car when I got back to Atlanta. When I got home I immediately called four Subaru specialists before I called Summit, who are Roswell Subaru, Kennesaw Subaru, Decatur Subaru, and Three Star Subaru of Decatur. I simply asked them one question " the front end of my 2017 Forester is shaking when I hit pretty much any bump on the highway at about 60 miles or higher, and what do you think could be the most likely cause of that. " ( same question I asked Marc before he slapped a strut on my car. ) Without hesitating all four of these Subaru mechanics said the exact same thing - which was - this is a very common problem with both Foresters and Outbacks and it's almost certainly either the control arm bushing that connects the frame to the wheel which they see a lot of ( they said $500-600 or the cv ( constantly velocity joint ) that also involves the movement of the wheel in relation to the frame, they said about a $224.00 job. Not half the companies told me that, all four ! Now , the second question I brought up was, " someone told me before I talked to you that it was most likely a bad front strut does that sound likely to you? Guess what, again they all said the same exact thing, no way, we never replace struts unless the car was involved in a major front end collision. One of the mechanics suggested that I take it to my oil change garage and put it on a lift, if the left front tire has play in it and wobbles it is definitely one of the two things they told me, control arm bushing or cv joint. I did and it wobbled. Then I did something I wish I had done before going to Summit, I googled " front end shaking on 2017 Subaru Forester" guess what, all the responses I saw told me the same thing the Subaru mechanics told me and showed how they were fixing it and some of them the appropriate cost. In conclusion, I called Marc and told him the story and the results of my research. This was Friday. He says I'll call you Tuesday and we'll get you "fixed up next week" . I called today, Tuesday, when he didn't call. His response was that he tried to call the day before, ( when I was meeting with a client and he didn't bother to leave a message ) . And, that it's too bad for me because on his website it says if you drive the car a hundred miles it's too bad and he would neither fix it or refund my $ 654.43 . Then I was angry, you bet, and said that's inexcusable, you are the one who screwed up badly and put my life in danger 300 miles from home. His response was, why don't you call Visa and challenge the charges. Besides going to Summit in the first place, the only mistake I made was paying with a debit card. You see I'm normally not in the habit of doing business like this with scammers. My bad. He wouldn't even refund my money. I did another Google search, retail strut part is about. $100.00. I've never written a bad review of anyone. This is very very different. read more

I had an intermittent problem with my Honda. There was no engine light, and the problem was a serious safety issue, but unpredictable about when it would occur. To be made worse, when this problem occurs if I turn the car off for 30 minutes to an hour the problem goes away. I knew this would be a challenging problem to diagnose and I was looking for a mechanic who had the skill and openness to work with this challenge. I took my car to Summit because recommendations by friends and reviews suggested they would be a good choice. I was in no hurry and was willing to leave my car for as long as it took. Unfortunately, my first interactions with the owner or manager were met with a condescending and rude attitude. Every interaction I had with the owner I was treated like an idiot. They had someone drive the car home to try and recreate the problem. When I tried to suggest what would make the problem occur, I was cut short and dismissed. I left the car there for a week hoping they could fit it into their schedule. I would have even been ok if they said they were too busy or they just couldn't take the time to work on my car. I would have spent that week taking it somewhere else. Instead on Friday, I offered to take the car out to see if I could recreate the problem. Sure enough the problem started happening after about 30 minutes of start and stop driving. I headed back to Summit. I even called ahead and said that I was in my way back and reminded them that the problem stops when I let the car sit. The owner literally said "oh well" we are all to lunch (at 1:20 pm) we won't be able to look at it. I said I was literally about to turn into the driveway. "Oh well". Now, I am not trying to deny anyone their lunch. But they had my car for 5 days and I recreated the problem in 30 minutes. The least you could do is have a little flexibility and treat your potential customers with a little dignity. But, I guess he has been successful without treating people decently. So good luck with that. I went down the road and found a different shop that was willing to ask their mechanic to take a short break and look at my problem. I've been to summit a couple times before. Call to make appointment as they can be busy and if you walk in hoping for an open availability, then you'll be disappointed. They can get pretty BUSY. I bring both my cars her and have always been priced reasonably. If there is something that needs changing that was discovered, they will call you and all of you want it fixed. This place has changed dramatically in the past year, and the manager (Mark) has become incredibly rude, unprofessional, and unhelpful. Let me start by saying that I rarely write negative reviews and that I do so only when I feel the need to warn others. I made an appointment to bring my car in to have the A/C freon checked, because I noticed it wasn't as cold as before. I've had my 2011 Honda Civic for 10 years, and I've never added any freon. I get a call that my car is ready (no information on what was done or why). Mark charged me $118 to **remove freon** and change the cabin air filter. He never asked before doing any of these things, he just did them & charged me. When I called to ask him why freon was removed, he said that his tool said the freon was too high, but the tool could have been wrong. He was guessing when he removed the freon. I asked him if my cabin air filter looked bad, and he replied with, "I don't know, I didn't see it. I don't have time to call every single customer about their car, just like doctors don't have time to call their patients." He proceeded to tell me how cars are actually more complicated than the human body, and continued to compare himself to a medical doctor multiple times... still with no explanation as to why he **Removed** freon from my car without asking me first. In general he was just very rude and seemed annoyed with me, like I was bothering him with my stupidity. I didn't feel like I was taken seriously at all. So... I'm now $118 poorer with less freon than I had before. EDIT: After reading my review, Mark had his assistant Sam (who is very nice by the way) call me to explain that he did not actually remove freon from my car. So... I'm not sure what they actually did to my car, to be honest. In case Mark is reading this, let me iterate my concerns one more time: If you're not sure how to fix a customer's car concern: 1) Call them & tell them you're not sure, but you have an idea that xyz *might* help, and you can do that for X dollars. 2) If the customer agrees to that, go ahead & perform the work & charge. What doesn't make sense is doing something to someone's car without asking, giving them the bill, and when they ask you questions why they did xyz, you reply with "I don't have an answer for you." That's insane. "Why did you do this to my car?" "I don't know" Is this a prank show? I wish it were. Either way, I had a good laugh today, for the low price of $118. read more

Mark stated he also put in my car $100 worth of gas without my permission i had 2 pay him back. the bill came up to $1153.70 paid got car back drove car 175 miles gas hand not moving. I took my car here for several years and really liked these guys. Marc is a really nice guy, and they're very honest and have great prices on repairs. They're good with Volvos, but they don't specialize in them, so they don't have the equipment to do everything on them, but they're fine for normal maintenance. They're very up-front about what absolutely needs to be repaired and what can wait, and they also are really honest about using OEM parts vs. used or after-market parts. (They defer to the cheaper parts, but won't use them if they've had bad experiences with them before.) A HUGE plus is that they're about a quarter mile from the Avondale MARTA station, so you don't need to hunt a friend down to give you a ride. read more

Specifically -- Don't take your Volkswagen here! I was recommended to Summit by a friend that owns a Honda a couple of years ago. I called ahead to make sure they work on Volkswagens and make sure they knew what kind of oil to use among other things. I'm well aware that VW's are an epic pain to work on, and so I called ahead. I wish they had just told me they prefer not to work on VW's. I recently had to reevaluate whether to keep or replace my Jetta, and in reviewing my maintenance receipts from Summit: 1) I never paid for just the oil change I took it in for there was always something else wrong. 2) Their oil changes weren't saving me any money by not taking it to the dealer. I could beat the dead horse with the two biggest screw ups this shop made with my car, but all it really comes down to is they are not set up or knowledgeable about proper maintenance and repairs for VW's. read more

I've been going to Summit Auto for over 20 years, and for a very good reason. Marc, Ty, & Jane are ultimate examples of quality and integrity. Beyond just correcting a problem, they always explain the problem, the causes, and the severity and offer options if an immediate repair was not absolutely vital. I've used mechanical knowledge that these three have given me over the years to help other friends -- several times to the point where we were able to make temporary solution when stopped on the side of the road. So now, though I live on the opposite side of Atlanta, Marc, Ty, and Jane are my go-to guys for everything mechanical. Though the Nissan dealership/shop are 1/2 the distance of Summit, they just don't measure up to Summit's standards for service or pricing. read more

I have had nothing but positive experiences with Summit on my two older Subarus. Whenever I've had a problem that I thought would result in a new transmission or power steering or cooling system, they have come through by doing the simplest, least expensive things, such as replacing hoses, and those have done the trick. I have not had that experience at the dealer... Summit came recommended by a nearby independent Subaru repair shop (which is excellent) at a time when that shop was too busy to help me in a timely manner. Summit's prices are very reasonable, and because of the volume they do, they endeavor to get the car fixed and back to you as soon as possible, usually the same day or the next in my experience. I hesitate to recommend Summit only because I don't want them to be so busy they can't help me next time....;) read more

THIEVES!!! I just went into Summit Auto to get an oil change. I asked them to check squeaking when I brake. I also told them my neighbor who is a mechanic said there was nothing wrong with brake pads. I asked if they would be check belts. They said yes. When I went to pick up my auto, there was a $46.00 charge to check my brakes!!! NEVER ONCE did they say there would be a charge for checking brakes. I have NEVER been charged for "checking". I called 3 mechanic shops and the dealer to check if they charged for "checking" brakes while getting a service. What was I to do? They had my keys. UNSCRUPULOUS!!! I have mixed feelings about Summit. The first time I used them, it was at the recommendation of Mr. Nyguyen of Rainbow Towing (who I highly recommend!). Summit replaced a dead battery for $85 and I was happy with the service and the price. Fast forward 3 years and another dead battery, I was expecting a similar price, maybe a slight increase. This time it was $250 and the woman running the front desk and answering phones was rude as hell. I chalked it up to a bad day and let it go. When I called today for a power window that won't go up, she was curt and told me they don't work on Audi's. When I told her they'd worked on my car twice previously, she repeated that they didn't work on Audi's, but I must be a customer of "Mr. T's". I explained I didn't know who Mr. T was and that I was a customer of Summit. Next thing I know, I'm on hold for Mr T, who answered the phone with no knowledge of who I am or what I need. I explain the situation with the car window and he tells me he can fix it. I ask again if he works on Audi's because there was a language barrier. He confirms he can fix the Audi window. So, I'm on my way to Summit this morning and hoping for a repair at a reasonable price. But, they really need to get a new front desk person who is 1) friendly and 2) knows how to facilitate communication. Don't hand an unsuspecting customer off to an uninformed technician, to repeat what they've already explained. Good customer service would have been for her to confirm with Mr. T that he could repair the window. And don't be such a grouch! I love Summit. I've been taking my Honda Civic to them for 11 years with zero complaints. I looked around for a mechanic back in the day and once I found Summit, I stopped looking. I trust Marc 100%. He'll tell you what you absolutely need to do and the things that are recommended, but not essential. I a rubber/plastic burning smell a couple years ago and took it in. Turns out I had driven over some plastic sheeting and it melted to the underside of the car. They scraped the plastic off and didn't charge me a thing. read more

My first time and last was last Thursday when I walked into the office at 8AM and spoke with a gentleman in a office. I explained the problem and was immediately asked to leave my car and he would check and call. I needed a quote first to make sure I could afford and if so, I would return later on that morning to leave the car. He said he could not do it which seemed to me that he didn't want to do it. That customer service felt rude and unprofessional. So, I drove down the street to Decatur Pro Auto Repair and Mr. Steve was extremely friendly, checked my car and called me 20 mins after I left to give a quote. the shop says that they work on lexus/toyota cars so i took my car there. they originally said it was a fuel problem so they tried "fixing it" but they said that my car was a special case and they are still diagnosing my car. at this point they had my car for 2 weeks and every time we tried to call them almost every day or every other day they say "there is no updates on the car". After about another week of no updates nor calls from the shop we tried to call them again and the dude was on his lunch break so we called back in 4 HOURS and he was still on his lunch break. so now i call back 3 days later asking for any updates and the head guy (mark) said that they spoke with us on friday about it which they did not cause he was on his 4 hour lunch break. mark kept on trying to defend that they gave us an update on the car 3 days ago which again, they never did. i said well since your the head guy at the shop you should know the update. he replied with " the update is that we gave up on the car". at this point it was more than a fucking month that they had my car for and i just got it back. When i got the car back it was running WORSE than before. please do not go there! they still want me to pay 300$ but they didn't fix anything on my car read more

These guys are alright. The manager, Marc, is a classy guy. Mechanics are southeast Asians who have good hearts. The lady who answers the phone on the other hand is a real pain. Take Phyllis from "The Office" and inject her with the personality of Mom from Futurama peppered with the voice of Mallory from Archer. After leaving my car there for a few hours, and getting something to eat, I had to walk back and ask for an update on my car and they lady said something along the lines of: "you really think it'll be done within a few hours? y'know most people come back the next day." Whoaaaa lady. Attitude adjustment much? After she said that, she went to find Marc and told her I was crazy and wanted my car back. I had to apologize to Marc and explain the situation and that I only wanted an update on what's going on with my car. Turns out he was just working on it (busy guy), called for the parts and that it should be done in a few minutes. Evil lady aside, this place is alright. The mechanics are nice and would explain what's going on if you put on a friendly face and just ask. I feel like I can't give a fair rating just yet since what they diagnosed turned out to be wrong and I had to go to another mechanic to solve my overheating problem. I may come here for easier fixes like an oil change to support local businesses, but nothing serious. If you do come here, it's near the DeKalb's Farmer's Market if you want something to eat (their cafeteria accepts cash only). Other than that, bring a book or something to kill time, or get a buddy to drive you home or to downtown Decatur. read more

I had my car towed all the way to this location from Columbus, GA because 1) I don't know any shops in Columbus and 2) I was referred to this location by someone who has had their car fixed here for 15 years. When I called Marc, I explained to him every problem I was having. He wrote everything I said and had my car fixed within a day. My father had to pick it up and when I looked at the invoice, he had not only wrote everything I mentioned, but took the time to check over the car as requested to ensure there were no other problems. NOT EXPERT MECHANIC!!! Took my Subaru in last month here and told them to check the rear end as I was having vibration issues. They came back and told me only the Brakes need fixing, I took there advise and fixed my brakes. A few weeks ago my driveshaft pop out my Subaru and it Tore the Transmission Housing in half. Now I half to get a new transmission & driveshaft put in! Obviously the Mechanics at Summit Auto did not investigate well as they only fixed the first problem they saw. Probably the MOST honest auto shop I have ever been to. They do the work fast, do it well, and they charge at a decent rate. Let's face it, getting your car costs a lot, but you don't want someone who will just arbitrarily charge you an arm and a leg. I've been here a few times and have received decent car service, but I have had to return the car once to re-do something (admittedly their fault, but they acted like they were doing me a favor not charging me double labor, no discount for multiple days without a car), so they're certainly not detail oriented. Here's why I'm not going back, all customer-service oriented during my last two times there: 1) The woman I spoke with when calling tried to diagnose my car. I wanted some work done and my check engine light solved and she told me to just ignore my check engine light because "it could be a number of things and isn't serious." When I insisted, she spoke to me like I was an idiot for wanting it fixed and truly tried to argue her point. 2) They left my window open when it was raining once my car was ready for pickup. 3) When I asked them to check my brakes I wanted to know how much was left -- mind you I specified that I didn't need to know miles or days or any other impossible request, I simply asked if they were more than half way, or if they could give me a percentage. Receptionist's reply: "The guys here don't speak English so I don't think I can get you that information." And then I was charged $39 for the brake check. 4) They were too busy for an appointment until I was out of town and I offered to drop the car off the day before I left, leaving it with them for 3 days so they could do the work at their convenience -- no rush. They refused and said if I couldn't pick it up same day, I couldn't leave it. When I got back and left it with them, they kept it for two days. 5) The woman who answers the phone really needs to brush up on come customer service. "Hi I have a car being worked on and I'm checking to see if it's ready. They're working on -- " "I don't know you, so start with your name." I trust and like Marc, hence the extra star, but he needs to work on front and back end of the business before I would go back. ***100th Yelp Post*** UPDATE: Marc actually wrote me a letter based on my review, apologizing for a couple items and pointing out that I was incorrect in stating that I was charged $78 for my brake check -- it was $78 and hour, $39 total. I did not intentionally misstate this and appreciate the feedback and handwritten letter. I added one star for this. read more

This place was recommended by a friend. I also Yelped it and saw that it got mostly good reviews. The service was great! They did not scam me by making me buy a new power steering belt, which I was prepared to do. It only needed tightening, and that is precisely what they did. I said nothing about the brake pads, which I knew needed replacing. But they noticed they were worn and replaced them for a decent price. They made sure to call me to check and see if it was okay to go forward with the repairs, rather than just doing them and making me be at their mercy. I have taken my car to Summit a few times after I got an unsolicited recommendation ("You have a Volvo?! You *must* go to Summit!"). They are honest, friendly, and inexpensive. They often give you an option -- fix something or leave it, or to use parts they might have on-hand versus buying new Bosch parts. They work on many european and japanese models as well as american. Marc, the shop owner, is really a detective. Their shop rate is reasonable and they charge by the quarter hour. read more

My wife and I have been taking our cars here for years. We are on our fourth import that gets serviced by Summit, and I can't imagine a nicer, more honest shop. Marc is always friendly and has actually turned down business when I suggested maintenance that turned out not to be needed on our vehicles--hard to get more honest than that! Jane was also very helpful and saved us a significant amount of money by hunting down a reconditioned engine when my Mazda Miata needed a new one a few years back. I have had several different jobs done on my Honda Civic at Progressive. While I have been satisfied, recently I was very impressed. I had an emergency when my bumper was falling off of my car. While they were very busy, the mehcanic Ty took time to do a very nice repair on the bumper free of charge. He put the car on the lift to fix the bottom and then smiled at me and told me to have a good day. He was very pleasant and professional. Being from out of town I was finding it very difficult to find a shop that would work on volkswagons. Out driving one day I stumbled across this shop and went in. I was the astonished that the owner was from the same hometown as I am. Still skeptical (just the way I am) I decided to give it a shot and have them fix my car (97 VW Golf) . Not only were they very knowlegeable about my issue, but very informative and true to what was wrong and how long, the process, and how much it would cost. I LOVE this place. It is so hard to find honest mechanics who won't charge you an arm and a leg. This place is awesome! I called Mark and got a quote for having the timing belt replaced in my 05 sonata. He quoted me the lowest price after I'd called around to a bunch of different places. I brought the car in, they had it done in one day, and even offered to stay late so I could pick it up. When I did pick it up, they charged me LESS than what they had quoted me! They said when they change the timing belt, they change some other things but those were in good condition so they replaced a cracked gasket or two and charged me less than the quote! When I was quoted $600 to replace a bad alternator, battery and tons of other things from "#1 Decatur Pro Auto", I called Mark and described the problem I was having. He said your alternator is absolutely not bad, I can tell you without even looking at it. All you need is a new battery. What a guy. I was treated unprofessionally. SB 225 - Motor Vehicle Repair Act - GA Code. Refused to give me a written quote for charges of more than $50 and tried to charge me more than 10% and $50 more than the quote. Tried to charge me $143 more than quoted amount for no additional work; actually minus my tire rotation. I was treated impolitely and blamed while issue brought up. Timeframe of car repair was also not respected. Phone interaction was very poor; they owed me a refund for a duplicate charge. When I called them I was again treated very disrespectfully. read more

The first time I took my car to Summit (based on the recommendation of a co-worker), all went well. The second time, the lady who works in the office wasn't there and Marc was the one I dealt with. Perhaps he was having a bad day (I try to think the best of people and the first time he was friendly), but he was rude and condescending to me. My car had been making an odd noise when stuck in traffic but not when I had it at the shop so I recorded it on my phone a few days before going back to Summit. I asked Marc if he would listen to it and he laughed at me and said no. I understand it may not have helped with a diagnosis but he could have humored me and spared 5 seconds of his time or could have had someone else listen if he didn't want to. I wasn't asking for much (it wasn't even busy) but got treated like a nuisance even though I was paying to get my car checked. Would not recommend seeking service here unless you can deal with someone else. read more
