One time they fixed my car and didn't even charge me because it was just a loose wire. They could have pretended it was something serious and billed me a lot but they didn't. Bad experience - Went in for an oil change. I was told that I needed a Cabin and Air Filter for $73 ( apparently this was coming from Honda dealer so I had to wait ) Labor was additional $145.00 ( now I'm feeling very ripped off). When another mechanic showed me the flimsy cabin/air filter recently it was not a Honda one but very cheap one. I was so ticked off then they charged me 3.5% credit card fee without telling me I could have written a check ( yes I should have seen that on the receipt but I was really ticked off by then). These folks are legit! I took my Accord in to have the starter replaced. I had previously called around and got estimates to have the work done. Their prices was slightly higher than a close by shop, but the warranty offered was better. Plus, I just had a good feeling about them. That feeling was right. The night before I had planned to take my car it, the old girl decided to give up the fight and leave me stranded. I didn't exactly know what to do, so I had the tow truck bring my car to their shop. The day I got a call from the shop, they had the parts in stock and could get the work done that day. I ended up being dropped off before the car was finished so i sat in the office for a while. I could hear the conversations with other customers and the repair staff. Not one time did they say anything even slightly shady. It was all about what was the right for the customer. Including paying to have parts same day delivered to their shop. They are a family ran and owned business with good principles. It made my heart happy. read more

Avondale Independent is now the ONLY place we will be taking my fiance's car from now on. He has a Honda S2000, which is no longer in production. On top of that, it is his baby and very sentimental. A while back he was in a car accident and the other driver's insurance accepted responsibility - which meant that we had to go through their processes. I was EXTREMELY worried about the quality of the work but was so relieved to see all the positive reviews on here for Avondale Independent. They did NOT let us down. Their work is immaculate - clean, beautifully done, and the attention to detail was wonderful. They kept us informed at every step of the process, worked with the insurance to get an end product we would be happy with and they could be proud of, and requested additional time from the insurance company when needed - instead of cutting corners to get things done with mediocre parts. On top of that, their honesty and candor with the process and our options made the world of difference. We knew we could trust what they said because it wasn't always the most expensive option (they told us if they really didn't think something needed to be changed etc.). Finally, on top of all of that, the people were my favorite part. I spoke with Kelly so much, I felt I knew her before we actually met. The owner who manned the desk was completely rude. Answered the phone while he was talking to me and preceded to have a 15 minute conversation with no urgency to stop. When I asked him questions about my car - he would not entertain any and said the only way he could figure anything out was to jack the car up in his shop. For a fee of course. After he jacked the car up and still could not find an issue ( source of a fuel leak) He told me that it would be $600 - 800 to take the fuel tank off and look for the leak. After which it would cost even more to fix. Finally he told me that it would't be worth it to fix the problem and offered me $200 for the car. Later, I found out from people in the surrounding area (I am new to town) that this is a common practice at this shop. I only went to this place because of the Yelp reviews, but now I do wonder if these reviews are genuine. Good luck. read more

I love these guys! Been taking my ol girl Honda Fit here for about a year. She's got some age, 11 years and 150,000 miles (all of which have been mine) and they've done an amazing job taking care of it. I LOOOOVE my car and they've gotten her all peppy and like new again WITHOUT price gouging and telling me things I don't need. They're also encouraging and impressed by the fact that I replace air filters on my own because it's easier and cheaper than having them do it. They're ALWAYS fair and courteous. read more

Unfortunately I did not have a good experience at Avondale Independent... I am an Acura MDX owner and recently moved to Decatur. I have usually got my SUV serviced at Acura Carland of Gwinnett Place. I got my car serviced at Acura Carland back in early May and my service specialist told me of a trouble code P0134, he recommended that I eventually needed to replace my O2 sensor(bank 1 sensor 1). It was a dealership repair cost of $450+. He did however say I did not to get this replaced right away. I eventually have to get it replaced before my emissions was due. I shopped around in my new part of town and got various quotes including $215 from Far East Motors among others. I found Avondale Independent and the reviews looked good. I called Avondale Independent and spoke with a woman named Kelly, She is the owners daughter and spoke very highly of their family owned and operated business over the last 30+ years. I communicated the problem and the trouble code which I alluded to above. She quoted me a price of $247 which I thought was reasonable. I called and set an appointment and a few weeks later and then dropped my car off. Kelly called me 4 hours later and told me that the cost was going to be $430+ after I dropped my car off. I was assuming that there needed to be additional service... I questioned why and she told me that the part was not the same. I stated it was not the 02 sensor? She said no "It is the Air- fuel ratio sensor". I said, " is that not the same as the 02 sensor?" Kelly said "No it is a different part". I exclaimed so it is not the Sensor 1 Bank 1 location? She said "yes it is that location, but it is a different part than was quoted before" Then she had the nerve to tell me that she "originally misquoted me" from that initial phone call. I told her other independent shops had quoted me similar prices to her original quote of around $200-$250 range. Kelly then communicated it would be $250 part and 2.5 hours worth of labor. I called my old Acura Carland Service specialist and he told me those codes both mean I need to still replace the same sensor and that the Air-Fuel ratio sensor and 02 sensor mean the same thing and usually takes about an hour of labor. I decided to Uber up to the shop to get my car and discuss with Kelly. Kelly was not there but the nice young office lady named Ashley was there. She told me if I wanted to get the work done it would need to be done now because they close in an hour and the tech would be leaving but they could finish it up in an hour. So NOW it would only take an hour worth of labor, yet the labor costs would be 2-3 hours that Kelly quoted me over the phone! I was very frustrated and wanted to go, however Ashley stated I still needed to pay their diagnostic charge of $52... I said "I already gave you the code". She said Kelly stated to her before she left I still needed to pay the diagnostic fee... The same diagnostic service that all dealerships and autozone places charge nothing for! I only had my American Express which they do not accept because they do not want to pay the additional 1% fee. Ashley stated I needed to get the cash and I said I do not have any cash or my ATM card. Ashley and Kelly ultimately said I could go and I did not have to pay the fee, Thank God because I already felt pissed off with the overall experience. I ultimately felt very FRUSTRATED and taken advantage of like I got the "old bait and switch" routine after I dropped the car off and was sitting on my couch. This was after I did my research and even communicated the right location and trouble code... It was unprofessional that she "misquoted" me and then lied to me about the 02 replacement part and the labor time to complete the work. Take your time and do your research and due diligence, even then people will still try and take advantage of your lack of car knowledge. For a multiple year family owned and operated business they did a very poor job of getting my business now and in the future. EVERY ONE hates dealing with car repairs and feeling ripped off!!!!! read more

My wife came here for an oil change recently. In and out very quickly on a weekday morning, prompt service with no pushy sales tactics or add-ons. They just changed the oil like she asked. I didn't know this kind of shop existed anymore! Oh yeah, and the price? Awesome. It would have cost more to buy the oil and filter at Autozone. This is a low-key operation. If you posh types want an air-conditioned waiting room with cable TV, pay extra for it elsewhere. We'll be back! read more

I have been taking my decrepit (but very reliable) 2000 Honda Accord to this place for about 4 years - and they haven't let me down yet. I would like to reiterate the wise words of Joe G. - if you are expecting coke machines and nice chairs in the waiting room, think again - this is a drop it off and come back later kind of place. Or you can meander down to Urban Grounds and wait there. I have 2 primary reasons for liking Avondale Independent: 1) Whenever they give me a quote on supplies/service it's cheaper than Curry Honda and others around town and 2) They have a fierce looking but incredibly sweet "yard dog" who you can catch hanging around in the back sometimes. read more

I recently brought my 2010 Honda Civic to Avondale Independent with what I suspected was a bad Alternator. I showed up at 5pm after work and they still took the time to troubleshoot the issue and confirmed that it was indeed the Alternator. They did the repairs quickly and I had my car back the next afternoon. The total cost for parts and labor for Alternator: $567.99 When you call Avondale Independent, you'll probably get Kelly on the line. She's incredibly knowledgable, helpful, friendly and great at communication. If your Honda is giving you trouble, I would highly recommend bringing it to Avondale Independent. wreckis garage seem troubled--mixups, confusion, promises not kept. They have had my car for 5 days now and still it does not seem to be done (they are not answering the phone). The repair is also very very expensive, but I decided to go ahead because it is a safety issue. I will look elsewhere next time. I agree with Maureen S's comments about things left undone and their needing to "start paying attention to the work they finish." Also, the place seems to be deteriorating physically. Probing through Yelp reviews for a closeby place in Decatur, I found Avondale Independent. Desiring to support local businesses with hopes of getting a cheap radiator, this place was a huge letdown. It was tough finding the place, they didn't have much of sign and the placed looks like an abandoned strip-mall out of a Stephen King novel. Seats were enough to fit maybe 3 or 4 people in there. If you need to kill time, there's a Waffle House across the street (not decent by the way, you're better off walking a bit to get to DeKalb Farmer's market for some good chow). From the outside, looks like they can only work on 2 cars at a time (only 2 vehicle lifts). My car had a over-heating problem, they diagnosed it, couldn't find the problem and charged me about $40 just for checking. I was pretty pissed and told the guy most placed I've gone to would at least let me know upfront how much to spend so they lowered the fee down to $40. Overall: don't waste your time or money here. If you want a place closeby, best option is Quantum Mechanics. Summit Auto Service is also a good try, but there's a secretary lady there that can be a bit of a pain to deal with. read more

First, as a disclaimer, I haven't been to this place since I totaled my beloved acura two years ago. But, Second, this place was wonderful. Always fair prices and fast work. They usually offered to drive me to where ever I needed to go when I needed to leave my car for a bit, but the Avondale MARTA station is a couple of blocks away. The thing I liked the most was the incredible love of those who worked there for their cars. A couple of them race them, and all of them love them. I used them for all my oil changes (call ahead to make sure they can get you in - it's a small shop), and for normal long-term maintenance-replacing a timing belt, tune-ups, water filter. GO HERE! I'm very satisfied with this auto shop, and you will be too! Whenever I move to a new city, I try to find a reliable auto mechanic. I started experiencing some trouble my old 2001 Accord, but the check engine light never came on, nor did any other sensors. I was stumped. The first local mechanic I tried was useless, as he hadn't the first clue what the problem was, and wanted to go experimenting for $750. Instead, I went onto Yelp and found Avondale Independent. Setting up the appointment was easy, and the woman who answered already had a couple of suggestions as to what it could be for when I brought the car in. She was very attentive and was able to work with my schedule. As for the day of the repair, the mechanics were also friendly and knowledgeable. They diagnosed my car's issue and repaired it at a competitive price (I checked online for the cost of the parts/labor to make sure). They even offered a good suggestion when I asked about lunch options in the area. My car now runs beautifully, and I will certainly be taking my Accord back when something else fails (face it, it's an old car). I had the most wonderful experience today with Dave and Kelly at Avondale Independent. I have been taking my 1991 Honda Accord (yes, 1991!) there for 19 or 20 years. And have always received great service. Yet today was so exceptional I had to put this on Yelp. I was at the gym and went out to go home. My car would not start. After several attempts to jump it off, I called Kelly. Told her what was happening, she asked me several "diagnostic" questions. She asked me to hold on while she talked with Dave. She came back to verify my location and told me Dave was coming over to me to check out the car!!!! Once he got there, he got my car started and he told me the problem. I then took the car over to the shop to spend the day. They fixed it. And Kelly was so patient with me as I called several times during the day to check on the progress. Where else would you have someone take such a personal approach to service. This is the reason why i have used Avondale Independent for so many years. I have two big fears about my car. The first is that some big SUV will run into me and total out my beloved Honda. The other fear is that Dave and Avondale Independent will close up shop. read more

Her honesty, integrity, and attention to detail are refreshing change of pace, and it's remarkable how she remembers every detail about your vehicle's service. They have already saved me thousands of dollars on keeping my 06 Pilot running properly when compared to quotes I've gotten from a big box mechanic, and now I'm trusting them with my brand new 15 Odyssey. This is the WORST COMPANY EVER!!!! It took two weeks for repair. I never received a call as to when my repair is finished. When I was ready to pick up my car because I thought it was long enough, they refused to release my car. My car was rear ended and I was told that it was no problem and they would deal with the insurance company directly. Afterwards, they demand that I pay money out of pocket for the difference. When I called the insurance company, I found out that the insurance already paid for the repair and any differences in estimate. THEY ARE A SCAM!!! DO NOT TRUST THEM!!! They would ask you to pay AND THEN DOUBLE DIP THE INSURANCE COMPANY. read more

Shop incorrectly quoted me on a major repair. My timing belt broke and the lady on the phone told me it would only cost $700 to fix for the belt. After agreeing for this price, they called me back an hour later and told me the real cost would be over $1700 to fix. This was a huge difference and I would have junked the car before putting this much money into the vehicle. I would not go here unless you like being misled on price for an old bait and switch. read more

My 2008 Honda Pilot broke down outside of Atlanta after driving cross-country and I knew it was something really bad. I had it towed to Avondale Independent because they had done some work on it a few years back and I remembered them being very honest and trustworthy. After some initial tests, Nick called me with estimates varying from best case scenario to worst. Unfortunately, when they took apart the engine they found it was way worse than they initially thought and I needed a full engine replacement. After spending a few days deciding if I should fix my old car or get a new one, I decided to fix it because I really love my car! Nick outlined the price for me and even accepted the few hundred I had already spent on the tests and initial work towards the total. They finished the job as quickly as they could to keep me from racking up any more rental car bills and even offered to stay late for me to pick it up. After it was finished, Nick called to check on how it was doing and scheduled a follow up appointment to re-check it and make sure everything was perfect. I cannot recommend Avondale Independent enough. They are everything you would hope to find in a shop...extremely skilled mechanics, reasonably priced, honest and also very caring! I've been there a few times recently and they are reasonably priced. They seem down to earth and honest from what I have seen so far which can be hard to find with an auto shop. I would recommend then. My only complaint is they haven't been very good about calling to say the car is ready if I leave it there, so I suggest that you call them or come check rather than wait. read more

DO NOT take your car to this shade tree operation. My car was repaired to the tune of $700 but not really. It now makes noises never heard before, the check engine light is on and it "stalls". None of these conditions existed prior to the repairs. After two days of diagnostics, I was told the problem (after contacting them) was a fuel pump and that there was a pump available. The car would be ready that afternoon and they would call. Two days later when I called to see if something was wrong I was told the car was ready. The young man on the phone explained that ready meant the fuel pump had been replaced and the car now stalled. "Stalling means you have to give it more gas when you start it up now." I said I would come and get the car. An hour later I arrived and paid the bill. After several minutes when my car was not made available to me, I went back in to inquire. "We're getting our tools out of your car so it will be a few minutes." When the young man brought the car out, I was told he had to drive it before I could have it and he took off. When I complained that the check engine light was now on and there was a strange noise never heard before, I was told the car came in that way. Just how happy would you be after 5 day paying $700 with a car that now "stalls" and makes strange noises? Please be aware they do not call you with information. The staff is immature and surly. Obviously they do not enjoy their work. I had taken my car there on the advice of a friend. It is true they are low keyed. Well actually verging on comatose or catatonic. Note that some of the staff race cars. Wonder if that's why my car not makes strange noises. The system requires you give one star. They are not worth the it but had no choice. read more
