Lunch had me visit this restaurant and I still wish I had opted for my original idea and ordered the Curry Chicken...but I went with the Sesame Chicken instead. I gave it the term, "Air Fluffed Chicken Pastries." The chicken itself was small and hard to find, covered by lots of frying batter instead. The sauce was overly sweet. The steamed white rice was a disappointment. The crab rangoons were delicious, absolutely the best I've had which saved the review of the Sesame Chicken, I will be back to this place, the food wasn't bad at all and service was fair. read more

Changing my review to two stars. Woke up at 1 am with cramps in my tummy. I thought maybe it was the antibiotics. I do not think so because I had my refrigerator left overs for lunch and after 30 min cramps again. Glad I stayed in to watch the big games today. I do not think I will be back anytime soon. Awesome asian in an unassuming venue. As my fellow yelpers know I rarely give 5 stars, that way when I do, you know it was good and I've dined in many places with lots of points of reference. I've passed this place hundreds of times over the past few years and it never gave me any incentive to enter. On a whim we decided to give it a try since we didn't want to drive 40 miles for some decent asian food. I'm glad we decided to be adventurous. First of all, the post about the dining room looking like an insane asylum is a little ridiculous, but it isn't a fine dining atmosphere either. Just to reiterate, this is no frills dining but they have take out available and service is fast if you just want to get it and go home. The sanitation rating is a 97.5 which is a little low for me normally but acceptable range for asian. We tried the crab rangoon and shrimp ring appetizers. Both were served with a sweet and sour sauce. The rings were a little bready but both were absolutely amazing. The rangoon just the right blend and consistency and the shell had a perfect crunch. There is a monthly special of about 3 entrees that are served with rice for $5.65 with nice portions. My dining companion tried the General 'Cho' which was one of the specials and while the chicken was a tad bready but the sauce was perfection with just the right touch of spice. I ordered the steak teriyaki entree. It came with mixed veggies which consisted of carrots, onions and broccoli, plus clear soup for $7.95 and for another $1 i added a side salad. The ginger dressing was obviously homemade and had a great bite to it, but the lettuce was a little large but that has been my experience at most asian restaurants. Drinks were served in cans for .95 or you could get tea for around $1.69. Regarding service, this does appear to be a family operation, which is perfectly fine with me. The server was probably the daughter she was to the point and provided fast, efficient service. She was very friendly and offered us some additional sauces to try with our meals. Refills were often, before our drinks got empty; if you order the can (which we did not) you have to pay for each one. read more

Fantastic - food is fresh, no frozen stir-fry here. Call ahead and get takeout from the drive thru window. Mother of two small children - I love a slow food meal made by someone else! Even better is not having to drag two children out of the car to pick it up. read more

This is my favorite Asian restaurant in New Bern. It has both Japanese and Chinese food. This is the only place in town that I can order SHRIMP sauce with my Chinese food! I like to smother my General Cho's chicken with that stuff! Delicious! They have a pick up window, so if you're military and in uniform, you don't have to leave the car! I always call to place my take out order when i get off work and it's always ready at the window for me. read more

I try not to judge a book by it's cover but in this case I absolutely SHOULD have. I ordered egg rolls but when I cut it open I smelled cinnamon! Who puts cinnamon in an egg roll?? I've never tasted such a grotesque egg roll in my life. When my veggie "hibachi" came out, it too was INEDIBLE. The three bites I did take caused me such a bad stomach ache that I spent the next few hours close to the bathroom. This is not a quality or clean restaurant and definitely not Japanese or Chinese food worth eating. When I asked the waitress if the egg rolls had cinnamon in them, she didn't know and didn't even ask why I hadn't eaten my meal. I will never go back!! read more

I'm not sure why others are bashing this place. Who cares what the damn dining room looks like! The have a sanitation rating of 99%, Wow! Look at Ribeyes Downtown, their rating is only 85% but you would rather eat there because it's "pretty"? I would rather eat somewhere that spends their profit on fresh food instead of light fixtures. I had the Hibachi chicken and it was AWESOME! I spoke with the nice lady at the register and found out that they make ALL their own sauces. And our waitress was the best around, she was attentive and had small, polite conversation with us. I think her name was Tonya (sorry if i misspelled it) we look forward to seeing her whenever we go there. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a great meal and doesn't really care about wallpaper and light fixtures. read more

I've been going to Sumo Bowl at least once a week since the first week they opened. They're a locally owned family restaurant in a small, unassuming building, but it definitely isn't a run-of-the-mill generic Chinese place. They have the usual Chinese dishes that you'd expect but they're made fresh from fresh ingredients, and they also offer Japanese food of the same high quality. Can't get that from the typical strip-mall fast take out place. The atmosphere of the dining room itself feels like a small family-owned place, it's an open floor plan with 2 and 4-person tables. They're more than happy to move tables together to accommodate parties. It is a smallish place and not a high dollar chain store so don't expect the atmosphere of a PF Changs, but it is clean and comfortable. As far as service, the family that owns it are incredible. They've always been extremely friendly and remember our typical drink orders and special requests. The table wait staff are usually more than adequate although (Like every place, ever) they may get someone new or bad occasionally. New people improve, bad people are gone quickly. I highly recommend it, everyone I've introduced it to loves it and become regulars. read more

I travel to New Bern frequently and after passing this place about a 100 times, I finally decided to check it out. WOW. Great food, pleasant operators. I personally would recommend to go, as there is not much of an atmosphere, but my impression is that you get a wonderful meal, prepared fresh and with thought, and that the price is amazing. I have tried the Hibachi chicken, 5 stars for a take out place, the terryaki chicken, 5 stars for take out, and the vegetable and beef rolls. The beef rolls are a real treat. I have never experienced this before. They are light and airy and appear to be made from scratch without a doubt. The vegetable rolls are good, not great. They had three layers of roll paper, and this was a little thick for me, and they had a little too much cabbage were as they could have add more carrots, and other fresh ingredients. Thumbs up big time. Fast, Fresh, pleseant owners. Tonight I will try the more traditional Chinese dishes, to include the General Tso's chicken. enjoy, read more

Nice staff however poor pedestrian unimaginative Chinese food in the traditional heavy sauced heavily breaded fried stuff with no attempt at Asian Fusion. Our family is very impressed with the quality of food we received here at the Sumo bowl. We have lived here for 2 years and had given up on getting great tasting, no-greasy chinese food. We had received a menu on our wind shield during the Mum-fest and thought we would give it a try. Well in the last 3 weeks we have eaten there twice and each time it was wonderful. Mind you, it's nothing special. If ya lookin for fancy dining, this ain't for you. But the food is good. The price is cheap. And the service is fast. Great! Neat atmosphere. Not boring. Lively and cute! Good food. Nice variety. They aren't very flexible though in customizing your dishes.

Great service but food was disappointing. Had chicken teriyaki and the chicken was cut into square shaped cubes and teriyaki sauce drizzled on top. It wasn't that great. Vegetables seemed to be recooked and were somewhat soft and not crisp and fresh. Fried rice looked like brown rice....not your typical fried rice with egg an vegetables. Food made two of three people sick. Steak was tough and inedible; the chicken stringy though chewable. The vegetables were sub-par and the overall taste was lacking. Service was slow even though mostly empty. The waitress was mostly friendly but didn't keep up with drinks. The woman who ran the register was just plain rude.
