After trying several places in El Paso, this is hands down the best place so far! Their veggie tempura was a towering plate of deliciousness (seriously had a piece of sweet potato bigger than my whole hand!). The pot stickers were good -- a little on the small side, but delish nonetheless. My husband ordered 2 kinds of sushi and said both were awesome. I got the teriyaki chicken and loved it. Their fried rice is legit too. We both had huge to go boxes, so definitely worth what we paid. We will definitely go back! read more

Cucumber roll and tamago were good, though the cucumber roll was warm which was a bit odd. Tamago was spot on. Miso was decent. Rice is fine. The yakisoba was odd. It wasn't that it was bad, it just had way too much oil and the sauce was way too overpowered. I kind of felt like I was bothering the waitresses, but not in a snippy, "they were rude" way. My husband and I are from California, and we were extremely disappointed with the selection on the menu, not many choices or options. I have been visiting Sumo Sushi for many years and that alone shows they're a success. The service is friendly and the pricing is reasonable. The food is delicious and the variety on the lunch boxes is better than other restaurants. The tempura needs a little seasoning as soon as it is pulled from the fryer, however it is crunchy and tasty too. Try a variety of rolls or some nigiri or sashimi. Sumo Is here to stay! read more

We've gone several times and it was a hit or miss. However, we haven't been back since the last time we went with friends. We usually order sashimi, donburi, some rolls, salmon, noodles, even appetizers. Sashimi is fresher some days than others...on bad days, it smells "fishy". Fresh fish don't have that smell. Donburi isn't authentic and has too much rice. The egg scramble is overcooked and not light or fluffy. Not enough meat. The last time we went, our friends got food poisoning. Yuck! I ordered into this place cause my favorite sushi place was closed. I paid 12 dollars for crap! Two Cali rolls I ordered and I got 8 pieces at 5 dollars a roll. A basic rip off! We got 5 or 6 rolls, and I don't remember any standing out, most were rather bland. Other people at my table ordered noodle dishes as well, and were equally not impressed. Service, though, was good. This is by far my go-to place! I always end up coming back here even after I feel adventurous and want to try a new restaurant and regret not sticking with sumo. Its not a fancy place like all the other raved about sushi places nor does it have wild unique sushi varieties but the quality, flavor and surrounding is very traditional and sincere. The food speak for itself, which is how it should be. I've been a frequent customer for years, the staff is amazing and everything is so clean. The sushi always taste fresh, it amazes me that I have never been disappointed with every visit. Ive gone to the fancier and raved about places. You are simply paying alot for the atmosphere. the nigiri sushi tastes fresh, the pieces are nice but pricey, the rolls are ok but I almost never eat rolls. The place loses stars for the service: the waitresses are disorganized and you have several come randomly to your table taking drink and food orders, and then they confuse each other, and you end up with nothing, I also make sure to recheck the bill because I'm not sure if the waitresses got it all right on there (it was right) ! One of the worst restaurant experiences ever. My sushi was warm and missing ingredients the menu said it came with but I ate it anyway, which later I regretted bc it made my stomach very upset. the worst part was my girlfriends meal. She ordered teriyaki chicken that came out suspiciously quick (within 5 minutes of ordering). The rice was good but the chicken was so terrible she couldn't swallow the first bite. I thought it couldn't be that bad so I tried it too but I couldn't either. It was a disgusting taste of old or raw meat. When the server (I think owner) came by to check on us she asked if we were done and wanted a box for the teriayaki meal. We kindly said no and explained we didn't like it. She argued w us saying it's the most popular dish and that chicken was fresh brought in that day which was also suspicious bc we didn't mention anything about it tasting old. Then the check was dropped off at full price. We paid and tipped but decided we're never coming back and were so grossed out that we're probably giving up chicken FOR LIFE. read more

I just got done eating here and it was pretty good (really a 3.5 star). The only other place that it's second to is located in the north east (Matsuhara's). I eat sushi quite a bit. I'm natively from California and spent time in Hawaii. I ordered the Beef Udon which was standard fare, they didn't have the pink egg think which surprised me. Though it also made me happy since I don't like it in the first place. The miso soup which comes with the rolls is actually pretty good. The Red Dragon was the best, the metropolitan and the Dragon roll were okay. Though Valerie D. Makes a solid point, the eel sauce is a bit too sweet. The California roll was standard fare, though they did add masago on the top (or whatever the fine Orange grains are). The prices were a bit high pending on what you ordered. The staff kept itself busy by actively engaging customers. My wife felt like she was being rushed, though we were right near where they were scanning the crowd from.
