I don't know how I missed this place, I've lived in the area for years. I think it's the location, it's across from McDonalds and caddy corner to Lowe's... and at a very busy corner. By the time you realize where it is, you've passed it. Which is a damn shame. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside it's much nicer... clean, nice aesthetic. Maybe not a "first date" vibe, but any other date will do The food was fantastic, maybe a little pricey, but in this economy, it's hard to rate "bang for the buck". But the portions were beautifully plated and pretty decent. Great parking, and nice friendly staff. Worth the visit, and now I have a closer sushi place (they also have a decent selection of Thai and Korean too). The only thing better than the fresh and delicious food is the staff that always appear genuinely happy to see you. The great thing about Sumou is that the menu has an array of selections and there are lots of new things to try. Attended an event near by & decided to come in here after. We were greeted & seated right away. Right away it felt like a family owned, right at home atmosphere & I liked that! You can tell a lot of guest were locals, the staff was engaging in conversation. To start we had the rock shrimp which is not your typical rock shrimp. It was regular shrimp with a salad in the middle. However the flavor was 10/10! The sweet and spice blended perfectly. The portion was pretty big& definitely enough to share. I've been eating Keto for several months and was HUNGRY last night. Sumou was on my way home so I stopped. I was not able to dine in due to the hour, it was not a problem for me, totally understandable. I ordered the 2 special rolls advertised on their board: pumpkin roll and October roll. I cannot find what they are made of but I highly recommend them. I also ordered the Kani Salad which I dug into once in my car. The rolls are large and were difficult to pick up and virtually disintegrated when dipped (not soaked) in the soy sauce. Since I was eating at home I didn't find this problematic, I would have been disappointed if I was eating at the restaurant. I like the atmosphere and decor but it seemed that it would be noisy when fully seated. I recommend and will be dining in at my next opportunity. read more

I was very pleasantly surprised with the delicious flavor and price of this Lunch Special!!!!! I placed a pick up order from Sumo in Patchogue at the end of RTE101-Sills Rd. The person on the phone was very pleasant and when I went to pick up they had my food thoughtfully packaged and ready to go in the time they said it would be. It was absolutely DELICIOUS- HOT- FULL OF FLAVOR and the best is the Harumaki Spring Rolls were still HOT & CRISPY when I got it home!!! When you work from home you definitely miss "going to lunch", and you tend to just settle for what's around. Some of my go-to Deli's have gotten increasingly disappointing and expensive so I stopped "treating myself" to that occasional delivery lunch. I ordered the LUNCH SPECIAL - Vegetable Pad Thai and it came with a nice side salad, & I added the Harumkaki appetizer. I ordered a large order over the phone and asked if they could separate the food by person. When the order was picked up, we got 4 separate bags (1 bag per person). They had separated the food according to the order I had given them and did not make any mistakes. We didn't have to guess whose roll belonged to who. Besides of course, everything tasting great and being presented beautifully - the fact that they did the separating that I asked - made everything perfect. We have gone to the restaurant for about 18 years (eating in or ordering take out) and we certainly love it for many reasons. The restaurant is always clean and the service is excellent. So I went to this place after a long day of shopping and eating. So I wasn't really hungry upon showing up but that changed real quick once I started eating. First impression is it was very clean, got there at 8:30 it was very busy but they still got us seated right away. The whole staff was extremely friendly. You sit down they give you hot towelettes to clean your hands and face ( I prefer this over towels because I don't trust how clean they can be). They also gave the table 3 bowls of edamame. As we were sitting she took our drink orders, we didn't get anything fancy just beers, water, soda, and hot sake. We first ordered a couple of appetizers which were delicious. Wasabi shumai, pork goyza , and vegetable goyza ( I probably butchered the spelling) they were all delicious. For the main dish I ordered the bento box with shrimp teriyaki and beef negamaki. This box is $19.99 but you get so much and a soup and salad. (Only downfall of night was they forgot my soup and salad so it came out with meal) the rest of the table got about 5 differently specialty rolls. I only had room to try out a couple but they were so good and everyone else loved them. They go above and beyond to make sure everything is so fresh and presented well. Two people at the table ordered red bean ice cream which I was to full to try but looked yummy. So all in all I really enjoyed this place. Like I said I wasn't really hungry but still was able to force myself into finishing my meal lol. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for top notch Japanese food. Oh and they also have hibachi if that's what you're in the mood for. Don't judge a book by its cover! On the outside, this place doesn't look like much, but I have to say: I was really impressed overall with the sushi here. First off, the menu is HUGE. The choices are endless, and the sushi prices range from inexpensive to expected. I loved the sushi appetizer - Yankee sandwhich. It was really unique and had eggplant, which I don't think I've seen before in sushi. All the rolls were delicious - the standout for me being the Volcano roll which featured fried pineapple. Service was a little spotty - one server refilled the waters almost too much - in the beginning though we got our appetizer before our drinks, and it took a little while to order in general. Other than that, the rolls came out in no time. They also give complementary edamame before your meal, and cut up pineapple afterward - a nice touch. The good reviews for this place lured me in initially, but the tasty specialty rolls have me wanting to visit again very soon. read more

Sukiyaki was not as good as it seemed to be more of a soup than actual sukiyaki (my mother is Japanese and makes this dish so I know what it is suppose to resemble). I can't believe I have never written a review for Sumou! Hubby and I have been coming here for years when we wanted sushi but wanted to keep things casual. Their sushi is always fresh (even when they are only open for take out). Hubby's favorite sushi roll is the Patchogue roll. I like all of them! We did take out tonight because they were closed for in person dinning. I was worried if sushi would be fresh and it was super fresh! I wish they were open. I'm pretty sure in English "sumou" just means to sumo wrestle. That's what my whitey baijo tastebuds do when I'm here, they wrestle over which one gets dibs on the next bite! This spot on the way-out outskirts of town may not seem like much as it's in the middle of almost nowhere, battling McDonald's and a shady strip-mall to see who's left standing in the ring. Let me assure you, do not feel skeptical about venturing in. This place comes complete with a wide array of options, more than you're used to at your typical sushi joint. While a lot of places now have the same specialty rolls and udon bowl, Sumou has got it all and more. Their bento box can be had at dinner, yes a bit pricey but also a bit larger. The udon is good, and the sushi is fantastic! Walk in, start to order, you'll be greeted with free edamame to start (isn't that a good enough reason to go anywhere?) Places like this are few and far between when it comes to unique options and flavor. So god-damn always you walk into a sushi spot, look at the menu, and every roll sounds exactly the same. Not here. They have your normal hibachi shtick, your basic rolls you'll get everywhere else, but then! Then they have some bangin' entrées and dope desserts. Yeah. You heard right, a Japanese spot that has decent dessert?! Get the 'exotic Bomba' it's got mango, PASSION FRUIT, and raspberry sorbet, surrounded by white chocolate, and it rocks. Their menu is endless and I've yet to be let down in all the years I've been going. Take out orders have never been wrong, the stuff has always been fresh, and I've always been served with a smile. DO NOT EAT THE HAMACHI KAMA!!! I have been a repeat customer of Sumou since they opened and always include hamachi kama in my order. Hamachi kama is the fried collar bone of the yellow tail amberjack. Yellow tail is an expensive fish and apparently Sumou has decided to substitute a much less expensive fish. Ecsolar, also known as oil fish and often unethically called "white tuna" in sushi restaurants is a cheep substitute and a dangerous fish to consume. It is not a tuna and contains substances called fatty esters which the human digestive system cannot digest. Consumption of fatty esters causes a type of diahhrea so special it has its own name: keriorrhoea. If you need to shit out the entire contents of your digestive system and like the color orange, then by all means order the hamachi kama from Sumou. Or, consume a bunch of sushi with white tuna in it and you'll get the same effect. Substituting escolar for yellow tail is below the integrity of a fine restaurant and apparently Sumou now puts their profits above the health of their customers. read more

I like this place and it seems very popular. The atmosphere of the restaurant is kind of quaint. It has a small bar and a fairly small sushi bar. The restaurant comes across to me as an old Pizza Hut building. There are about giver take 10 seats or 10 tables and the other side of the restaurant Have two hibachis which weren't running at the time I was there. Let's start off miss you soup regular tasting but good, side salad is a side salad. I ordered the sashimi lunch with two orders of Sea urchin. The sashimi lunch came with tuna, salmon, invitational crab meat, yellowfin and fluke. Then I ordered two sides of the sea urchin. The fish in my sashimi were wonderful. Tasted great and was fresh. The sea urchin was I think a little old because it was slimy to my tongue. It did not smell bad but the color was a little off And it tasted fine but left my mouth a little slimy. This kind of ruined the rest of the sashimi because everything started feeling slimy. The other thing we ordered was chicken maki bento box lunch. The chicken maki is rolled chicken around scallions and vegetables and then deep fry. I want to say very very good. Was very enjoyable. The box came with California rolls which were very good. Rice, and those small dumplings I forgot the name. Overall the Bento box was very very good for the money. I didn't take any pictures of the menu so if you need to see it you'll have to either look here on yelp or check out the website because the restaurants a little small and I felt a little weird taking pictures. The workers and waitresses at the restaurant are very friendly and helpful. My wife placed a to go meal that was filet mignon and shrimp , for 1 they charged her 8.95 for rice that normally comes with the 28.95 meal , 2nd there was maybe 3 little cut up pieces of steak which further aggravated us . We have been there at least 3 xs prior and never an issue. This is by far the best Japanese around!! I've been choosing Sumou over any of the others for many many years. Their food is consistently fresh as well as the service is always spot on! Added bonus is that it's nice they have their own to parking lot so parking is never an issue compared to places up in Patchogue Village and as I indicated the food is by far better quality over the last several years they have done some interior improvements that have really spiced up the location would definitely highly recommend!! read more

This is my favorite sushi spot in town! My fiancé and I have been coming here for over a year, at least once a week. The food is very delicious, and they have fun special rolls which we normally pick from. The staff are very nice, with very good memories; when they see us they automatically know what we like to drink, and eat. i Have been going to this place for the over a decade. Since I learned to drive . delicious every single time. I've never left disappointed. my only gripe is that is that they in a way threw authenticity out the window for a new age American Style form , which , don't get me wrong is great for most people. But for me I judge based on every grain of rice, the wrapping, freshness of ingredients etc. I prefer authentic to new school American style. so 4 for me but I'm sure any new age sushi lover would give it a 5 read more
