I ordered to go food , i got filet mignon and chicken combo the steak was not filet mignon im a chef of 10+ years and i know my steak. So they tried to rip me off. The chicken was so dry it was uneatable and had no sauce on it. Our salads came with no dressing and the soup came with no garnish. This cost me 80$ for two people and everything was disgusting and im extremely disappointed. As a chef id never deliver food to someone in this quality and id never lie about the steak product. Well, I have been wanting to go to this restaurant for for quite a while. I finally got to the restaurant and the staff was pleasant and attentive! But that is where it all stopped! The food was less then average of a habachi! The chef was less then entertaining! They also included a 17 percent gratuity in the bill. Mean while I tipped the habachi chef before knowing this!! Totally not cool! "I do not recommend this place at all! Also, I and the other parties at my table request the ny strip steak and they said they only had the filet for an additional price! One of my favorite go to places for good food. It does suck with the pandemic going on making options limited, but at least they are open to serve again. Service and food are still top notch. Great to have this place back up and running. read more

Where do I begin? Hmmmm, we requested a hibachi table and were quickly accommodated. However, when I arrived at the table I noticed that our server, Sing, placed a menu on each of our plates/bowls. I thought that perhaps the dishes were the kind that fancier restaurants use as a charger to place other dishes on top. I asked. When another server told me these were the dishes that the food was going on, I explained that the menus were placed on top and I would like new dishes for my family. They obliged, but looked at me like I was crazy. Our usual hibachi experience was dull, to say the least, because our server decided to lean against the wall and talk the hibachi Chet's ear off, preventing the usual antics and flare. That didn't bother me as much as seeing the same server, Sing, placing menus on the plates for a new family. The place was largely filled with children about 10 and under and I shudder to think of the plethora of germs that these poor babies were exposed to. Menus are dirtier than toilets! The chef also used the same spatula to first scrape the raw chicken onto the hibachi followed by the shrimp. Is this cross-contamination? I'm not sure, but I won't be returning to Sumou, nor will I be placing my usual monthly delivery order. Yuck! read more

I'm a big fan of Sumou. A friend introduced me to it for lunch. Price is on point and the food is fresh! It's a small spot in a strip mall on the border of Islip and bay shore. Worth a visit for lunch! read more

My only complaint is that the waitresses were a bit snappy, and they took our dishes away very quickly, sometimes when we weren't even finished. The food was pretty good, we ordered a wide selection of sushi and hibachi. The sushi was alright, nothing different from other places. The hibachi steak though was phenomenal! read more

This was actually the first, original Sushi restaurant in the Bay Shore area before it got littered with Koi Kokoro, Aji, Kumo and Mitsui. At the end of the day, it's pretty hard to screw up rolls, all of these places do it well. So what do you do to set yourself apart from the rest? Well Sumou's idea is to offer a 430-7 M-F Happy Hour where you can get $1 Sapporo's and $5 margaritas and mai tai's! I almost had to do a double take because that is literally unheard of for a happy hour in the Bay Shore area. We sat down at the bar at 6:20 and was honored the Happy Hour deal. We ordered the Tuna Pizza, Spiderman Roll and Eel avocado roll. The pizza was outstanding, just about the same as Aji's. Rolls were gigantic (I believe the Spider came with 12) Eel was just as good as the other competitors. The bartender was polite, easy going and never let my pint glass go empty. At 7pm she was careful enough to explain that my beers are no longer $1 but now $3. For 3 beers, 1 margarita, tuna pizza, 1 special roll, 2 eels rolls, the bill came to $55. This would have easily been $20 or more at the other nearby places. By the time we left around 7:30, the place was wall to wall packed- bar, hibachi and dining room. A great sign for the OG of Sushi restaurants in our area. Will definitely be going back to take advantage of the happy hour. read more

Substantial improvement in the last year. New Sushi chef's English is not great but what a difference he has made! Fish quality, variety and presentation are now excellent! Fairly quick delivery and very accommodating staff. I prefer this sushi restaurant to the other 5 in Bay Shore. I have eaten sushi for the last 45 years in Japan as well as many other countries and find these folks to have the best sushi in the local area! They do seem to be getting busier so I guess others have noticed the improvements as well. read more

Stopped here in a pinch. I wanted Chinese food but found Hibachi. The food was very good and the service was fast. My only complaint is the girl at the front desk had no personality. She was borderline unpleasant. I took my food to go so I'm not rating the rest of the staff but a warmer welcome would be a major bonus. read more

We went for dinner and split 4 rolls, the Halloween roll, the White Lady roll, the Alaska roll, and the Spicy Like roll. All of them were amazing! The Halloween roll was definitely my favorite. The fish was fresh and the rolls were made perfectly. We also had miso soup and enjoyed the $3 beer special. The prices are fair and the service is good. It's a reliable spot that we visit regularly and always leave satisfied. read more

This is my second favorite japanese restaurant. Everything they make is very good, however I do prefer Kumo to Sumou when it comes to sushi. Kumo tastes fresher and has my favorite unique rolls. Whereas Sumou has the best Hibachi of all. read more

I have been coming here for a few years now and I have always had a good meal. I love the fact that you can choose between just eating sushi and getting hibachi. It's also great to be able to eat sushi when you get hibachi. The sushi and sashimi here are very good and they always have a great selection. I most enjoy the magic roll as well as the volcano roll but you really can't got wrong. Prices are good for what you are getting. read more

We were on the prowl for something good to eat and stumbled upon Sumou. It's located in a busy shopping center. Small place, hibachi on one side and tables on the other. We decided on ordering three sushi rolls. The Long Island roll, green dragon and sumo roll. Eh, they looked amazing, but the taste was average. No "wow" factor. Maybe I'd give the hibachi a shot next time, but i'll pass on the sushi. read more

I have eaten here 50+ times, it is one of my favorite sushi places and I seriously love this place!! They have great sushi, new specials, great service, and the look is very modern. I suggest the good times roll, and the dynamite roll; if you aren't a fan of raw fish. The garlic fried oysters here are absolutely incredible, I mean last meal sort of incredible. They fry delicate and creamy oysters perfectly, serve them in their shell with a tangy garlic sauce. Their Chilean sea bass is also delicious! The waitresses are very nice and they happily serve you. I heard a rumor this places kitchen is dirty, but you can almost see inside the kitchen and it seems very clean to me honestly. I would travel 50 miles just for those oysters! Awful restaurant. Firt off, the rudest waitresses I've ever seen, they don't seem to be putting any effort into what they do. Sub-par food; the sushi's often tasted strange, and not at all fresh. Ordered the squid appetizer once and it just tasted extremely off. There was honestly FLIES at the sushi bar the last time I went, which was the last straw at which point I decided I'd never come back here again. There is literally no reason to go to a restaurant this poor, For hibachi food there is the far-superior Kumo a little down the street, and for sushi and other food Mitsuo and Aji 53, also both on the same street, are way better, have much more professional staff and I've never seen vermin. Avoid Sumou, go to a much better place, you'll only be disappointed here. read more

Hibachi food is very good. The only problem is that they really try to rush you out once you start to eat. Another problem was the wait for sushi. We wanted to order a simple sushi dish for an appetizer but it would of been 1/2 hr before we would of gotten it. The food was decent but the place was terribly run. 1. We waited 45 minutes for our table even though we made a reservation. 2. The manager kept telling us "1 more minute" 3. The hostess was rude, snappy and looked annoyed 4. The bar area was so small and the waiters kept slamming into us to get by.. Not to mention water was spilled all over my friends 5. One of the old menus fell apart on my friend when he opened it and the waiter told him "thanks for breaking the menu" 6. The waiter took our orders but never asked what we wanted for a side 7. My friend ordered a mojito and it took 20 minutes to get and then it tasted gross 8. We paid, and the waiter yelled the amount out loud and proceeded to count the money in front of us to make sure it was all there 9. I get takeout from sumou at least once a month. There are alot of choices in Bay Shore for Japanese. Sumou is my favorite. Lena the hostess is always very friendly. They have an eclectic selection of rolls including several that have cooked fish which is good depending on who you are eating with. Favorites are the Osaka and Tokyo rolls. read more

This is a little place tucked into a big shopping center. Stopped here on a whim. I bellied up to the sushi bar and was greeted with a morsel of salmon with a secret sauce of course, not my favorite, too much disguise, but I could tell it was fresh. Ordered the salmon tartar and it was quite unique and spicy. I enjoyed it. Had sashimi king salmon, yellowtail and striped bass, all of it was on the money. soooo good! They have Garlic lemon sauteed Soft Shell Crabs... to LIVE for! My other favorite is the Tuna avocado salad... yummmmmm When they have them, the Giant Scallop is so sweet and delicious it's a must when available. I love the small sushi bar and now there is a whole room for Japanese Grill and show! I love this place because it's a "sleeper" and now the word is getting out! read more

I love the hibachi here and so does my 11 yr old son. We eat here at least once a month and our tab with the tip is about $100 for just the two of us. That being said, tonight after eating dinner there I left very pissed off. After spending close to $100 in an hour with my son I was rudely approached at the hibachi table probably about a minute after paying my tab, just enjoying my last 2 sips of wine. I was asked to get up and move to the bar because he needed the 2 seats for a big group with reservations. Are you f....n kidding me???? Never in my life have I experienced this rudeness before. We literally were just finishing our relaxing, or what was supposed to be a relaxing dinner, and would have been out of our seats in a minute.......maybe 2! So rude, so turned off. Sumou is hands down the best hibachi around. My boyfriend and I have become sumou regulars, it's our go to place for dinner and drinks. The atmosphere is great and the hibachi chefs always make it a good time. We've been to numerous other places on the island for hibachi but sumou always remains our favorite. Had a great dinner at Sumou Restaurant in Bay Shore. Food was great. Hibachi chef was awesome. Then we paid the check. We tipped the chef and the wait staff separately . We were about to leave. The waitress said that we only left 10% for the staff. She was upset that we didn't leave enough. When we explained that we tipped the chef also she demanded to know how much. We added it up and it was a 30% total tip. Never going there again!! read more
