Our first spot for Christmas was packed, so we headed to Sumou (since we had a wonderful experience last year). There weren't many people inside, so we were greeted and sat down immediately. We didn't do the hibachi yet, but, we did enjoy the sushi selection! The presentation from start to finish was beautiful, so much thought and care was put into each dish. Delicious food in a warm and inviting setting. Sumou's food and service is always consistently good. Sushi and rolls are fresh and the variety is large. The special rolls are some of the best on the South Shore. The Hibachi and Teriyaki dishes are all delicious. The beef is Angus grade and so tender. The Bento Box is huge and a great value. Duck Teriyaki appetizer is a must try. Service is paced well and we never feel "rushed". Have not sat at the Hibachi grill but they are always busy and patrons seem to enjoy the experience. Can't say enough about the service, value and food. It's our local go--to restaurant. read more

Eh..used to be really good now.eh. Foods,ok Service .well nobody was there but could've been more attentive..they always seem to like to stay in that corner by the sushi bar while you wait..and wait for service(2 tables).The ousters ate HUGE like way too big for me and the waitress was told how theu were not good at all after I was asked.She chuckled with zero comment or attentiveness.With all of the restaurants in Bayshore now..do better.You aren't bad but read more

Went to Sumou in Bayshore, NY on Sunday for a combined celebration of our Anniversary & my birthday. We had a table of 8. They were excellent! Lots of Sake as they said "more Sake more happy." They gave me birthday hats and my husband a hat for our Anniversary. The manager ran over and plugged in a neon Happy Birthday sign as they all sang Happy Birthday to me. We went for my wife's birthday and had a great time, the food is delicious, apps and dinner, def good portions. This was our "down the block" when we lived in Bay Shore- we moved in 2020 and when we come back we try to get back to our faves. Tonight we ate here and it was an amazing meal. Soft shell crab appy was perfection! My wife and I each had one, and now we crave more!! My roll, her sashimi, tempora and the gyoza were delicious So happy to see Gary and Mindy again. Wanted to do something fun for a child's birthday, so looked around at the hibachi options. This one checked the box for proximity and a few friends who had used it said it did the trick, so we tried it out for a party of six with two kids. Did an early dinner, 5pm, made a reservation a week out, no wait. Staff was friendly and attentive, and the hibachi chef was entertaining, interactive, and cooked everything fine. Food quality was ok, nothing to write home about, but the quantity was large. If you're local and want to do hibachi without traveling, this is probably your best bet. read more

"If you don't like it then don't order it!" As evidenced by our first review of Sumou, we have been a regular (almost weekly) here for nearly 10 years. This week we looked forward to some of our favorite foods for Friday night. I placed an order for take out including many of our favorites especially Chilean Sea Bass appetizer. When we got the order home I saw that the sea bass was exceptionally small. I called to speak with the manager but the person who answered the phone would not get the manager or even say if the manager was available. They simply said, "oh no, I can handle this!" Great customer service!!! But ok, handle me. I'm not happy with the portion size and would like to know what you plan to do? " Well, if you don't like it then don't order it" Ok I won't order the sea bass appetizer or anything else for that matter. There are many other sushi places for me to take my money. I won't miss you and you probably won't miss me but I promise you this I will use every social media platform to share this horrible customer service experience. It's a shame that one rude employee can impact a persons business. I know if she were my employee she would be fired but that's just me. This place is great, I go probably at least twice a month and always leave with a smile and a full tummy. We usually get hibachi, and the amount of actually really good food you get for the price is great. The service is always very good and it's a nice looking place on the inside. My family comes here every year for hibachi for my brothers' birthday - It's his favorite! Located in a small strip mall in Bay Shore, the inside of this restaurant is super trendy and clean. There's a bar area, a sushi bar, a regular dine-in restaurant section, and large hibachi tables. The hibachi was great! Our chef was so entertaining and fun. If you tell them it's your birthday, they'll bring out an ice cream dessert with this beautiful flower candle on top that spins and sings! My only gripe is that I told the waitress and chef that I was lactose intolerant and could not have butter in my meal, however TWICE they put butter in the food and tried to serve it to me. We usually visit Sumou during lunch time, my daughter and myself enjoy the lunch box Teriyaki chicken. It's the perfect amount of food. The service is always prompt and friendly the food is always fresh and the restaurant is very clean. On occasion we will order and take home and everything is packaged perfectly, all of the necessary utensils and sauces are provided. The food is this restaurants saving grace, when clearly excellent customer service is not at the top of their priority list. Their hostess was less than pleasant when showing my party to our table, and could benefit from creating conversation with patrons, esp. when a hostess is the first and last person seen upon entering and leaving. Other than her pushy demeanor, we loved our hibachi experience. Have you seen an onion volcano? Never gets old! And my tri color roll was delectable. Would return!!! read more

We went to Sumou yesterday for a birthday. We had reservations for Hibachi at 2:30pm and were sat promptly. From the hostess to the waiter to our chef, everyone was very nice. Our hibachi show was fun and exciting. The only thing I would change, and I believe this is at other hibachi places, is to try and have the food all come off the grill around the same time. The rice came off of the grill and it took another 15 minutes to get the rest of the meal. The rice was cool by that time. I mixed the veggies and meat in the rice which heated it up a bit. Overall, I would return for more. read more

Stumbled over this place, going around in circles for a local massage parlor bc my back was in pain. I was never here. I'm a first-timer. The owner sat me ,..pulled my chair out got me a menu made me feel like I was a regular this was my first time and I ordered one of my favorites a cooked SpiceyGirl roll,..well,..OMG, It was ridiculously amazing! Not only was my dirty martini perfectly made by Mike, --a little dirty,..a few drops of dry vermouth,..stirred not shaken,..and of course the dirty ice on the side,..im.not picky,..haha Lol. Unarguably the best sushi and hibachi in the area. My boyfriend and I regularly eat from here, both dine-in and take-out. The sushi is phenomenal! I love when sushi places give you TWO shrimp in the shrimp tempura rolls - they do not skimp out! So generous with sushi fillings and everything tastes so fresh and delicious. The dine-in service is super attentive and quick, very polite waiting staff. The interior is beautiful, as well. Great spot for a date night or for some hibachi fun with the family! Definitely not a fan of this place. I came here with a small group, there was 7 of us to be exact for hibachi. We get here and of course I knew there would be a wait, but did not expect to wait over an hour. We are sat down and immediately offered to look at the drink menu. We order drinks and our food orders are taken and the salad and clear soup come out. I'm not sure what should be in the clear soup but I've had it before, this time it actually taste like "clear, bland" soup. Soup taste all the way watered down. Not only did we wait at least an our until our cook finally got around to us, but the food was gross. I had fried rice which looked nothing like fried rice- looked more like white rice sprayed with soy sauce. The scallop taste fishy. The wait was way too long. Just not a great dining experience here. The overall ambiance of the place is done up nicely as the price point suggests. Not entirely overboard, but just the right touches. The service here is also quite attentive with hosts and waiters being very welcoming. Just be mindful that they do get busy as most places during peak and weekend hours. I've learned my lesson and will not cheap out here and will order the $75 omakase. If you're not as hungry, they $50 will do, just know that you will be getting more sashimi than sushi, and the cuts will be your basic run of the mill.
