Sump is pretty great. I had heard rave reviews from a friend in St. Louis - their take was that even though it seemed unreasonably expensive at first glance, Scott, the proprietor, was so passionate about coffee, and made it so well, that you'd come back for more anyway. Yes, it's $5 for a pour over or $3.50 for an espresso. Yes, the vibe isn't the most charming. But let's give it the benefit of the doubt for a minute - it's in an industrial park that was built from the ground up in the last year. Give it a few years, and there might be some more trees around. In the meanwhile, one thing is for certain - the coffee is really, really good. Probably the best pour over I've had in Nashville. The baristas were friendly and unpretentious. They clearly care about coffee, but aren't going to stare you down if you wandered in looking for a meal. They'll simply direct you next door to Pastaria, or offer you a pastry (spent a few hours there; actually witnessed this happen). They had 4 pour over options during my visit, all brewed with a v60 brewer - a Sumatra Kerinci, Ethiopia Chelbessa, Costa Rica Las Lajas, and an Ecuador La Merced. I opted for the Sumatra, which was surprisingly delicate and a little spicy - a credit to the roaster. I also purchased a 12oz bag of the Ecuador La Merced ($17), so stay tuned for the results of that one. The espresso of the day was the Ethiopian Chelbessa as well. I enjoyed Sump's focus on coffee, and really little else. I found it easy to sit and enjoy the coffee and work in the space without distraction. And most of all, the coffee itself was A+. I'll likely be back many, many times. read more

Definitely a cool space but the coffee is overpriced. They have a nice selection of pour overs with very diverse flavor profiles but it's like $7 for 12 oz. I had the cold brew ($5.50 for 12 oz.) and it was pretty tasty but not $5.50 tasty. I guess you're just paying for aesthetics here. Staff were nice enough and lots of people were working/meeting so I will give it props for being a good space to stay for a while. All in all, it is good coffee, but I feel like the price tag reflects their perceived level of prestige, not its actual value. read more

I wish the indoor seating was open, but there's outdoor seating available when it's nice outside. Parking is a bit inconvenient, but their staff is friendly. Far and away the most thoughtful coffee shop in Nashville. It's hard to find good coffee in Nashville but not impossible (and, to be clear, they make great coffee here and the baristas are super knowledgeable) but what really differentiates this place is their use of the space. The giant windows provide a ton of natural light, they have glass bottles of water on every table, and the chairs aren't some modern uncomfortable design nonsense. In the summer, the outside is a great place to spend time. Also they serve ice drinks in glassware, the way they should be (and also the way that Nashville coffee shops refuse to serve them). I'm reviewing this place as a Vanderbilt student/freelance software engineer. This is a good place to study! I have previously downvoted by ignoring the fact that there are two sets of outlets on the wall side. Therefore 4-5 tables on the wall can be used for longer-term occupation. Not as plentiful as Three Brothers or Revelator, but when at busy times all coffee shops become impractical for work. Also, their loose leaf tea is the best in Nashville, hands down. Although Revelator has a great jasmine, Sump has four amazing Oolongs that are much more premium. read more

My husband and I were welcomed with a smile upon entering. We had a few questions about the coffee and the staff was very knowledgeable. We settled on an Ethiopia V60, Kenya V60, and Kenya espresso. Natural Ethiopia V60 was sweet with a creamy body (definitely recommend). The Kenya on both the V60 and espresso was popping with flavor and complexity. We are from out of town, so we asked for some local recommendations and the staff was very helpful. All around great service, knowledgeable and welcoming staff, and EXCELLENT coffee. read more

Today, my wife and I dropped by Sump Coffee for the first time after going to brunch/lunch at Pastaria. The quality of the product they're putting out of Sump Coffee is pretty great. This shop is apparently out of Saint Louis and the roast all of their own beans. One of the baristas was happy to welcome us and explain that they roast most of their beans light to medium but use brewing methods to highlight the flavor profiles of each blend, creating a more full flavor profile than you often get from light roasts. I had a cortado and my wife had an almond milk latte. I thought the cortado was one of the better espresso drinks I've had from shops in Nashville. It's bright and chocolate-y with a fruity taste to round it out. They obviously focus on the craft of the brewing method and it shows in their product. My wife commented that this was one of her favorite lattes she's ever had. The atmosphere is open, new, and well lit from abundant windows. It's obviously focused on the coffee with an open barista bar where you can watch the baristas and cool pour over robot create your drink. When you're over in the One City area, give it a try! Pros: Different and more flavorful flavor profile compared to other places around town. Great crafted coffee drinks. Cons: A little difficult to get to but if you're in the One City complex, you should definitely stop by. Overall: Great coffee option. I didn't expect to be impressed but I was, and will be back for more coffee soon! read more

On a visit to Nashville I had some down time and was looking for a place to hang out. Saw the pictures of their beverages and decided to try it out. I was not disappointed as their coffee is great. I ordered an oat milk cappuccino which was not too sweet, creamy, and we'll balanced with the espresso. The shop and surrounding area looks to be newly developed and the back of the coffee shop is lined woth huge windows. They also offer water on the tables which is a huge plus. Easily the best coffee in Nashville -- also the newest. It originated in St. Louis, MO, and opened up this shop not too long ago. Staff is very knowledgeable about coffee and doesn't mind questions. This third wave coffee shop is one for the books. Their pour overs , espresso, and milk drinks have never disappointed me. They have a rotating menu, but my personal favorite right now is their Ethiopian Buloya (sp?) on espresso and pour over. If you get sweet drinks this is NOT the place for you... orrrr it's the best place for you to become familiar with the art and flavors of coffee. Parking is funny, but I'm sure that is in the works to fix soon. Looks like they may be putting a parking lot right outside.. but, I haven't confirmed that yet with them. read more

I have very mixed feelings about this place, for a multitude of reasons. First, it was tricky to find. It is in an odd location, in the REAR of a professional building shared with an orthopedic clinic, Microsoft, and another little italian cafe. Once you find it, it's a nice bright open space that I could definitely hang around in- catch up, do some work, or as I did on our second visit- browse the web and relax for a beat. They offer 3 espresso options, and I LOVE options. We got two cappuccinos but one of the bean options sounded so lovely, we also got it on pourover to sample. Here's where I get conflicted- the pourover was beautiful. Husband claims it is one of the best he's ever tried! So good, it is what prompted our second visit the next day (and it was just as good). However... the espresso tasted like cardboard to me, with subtle undertones of maybe green apple or shortbread. I thought it was a fluke, but out of the 2 caps, they both had the same flavor. The second visit I tried their seasonal special spiced latte. Same weird wet papery cardboard flavor. I'm not sure if the milk maybe had something to do with it and it's a weird grass fed milk or something, but the espresso was different in every drink so I don't believe it had to do with the beans. And the bean we had on pourover was fantastic, so who knows. If you want straight up coffee, I highly recommend coming here. I love sump. I love everything they stand for, but on this Saturday I received such rude service from green flannel cabbie cap. I simply asked for a shot of matcha. Off menu. I understand. But to tell me you won't take my 5.50 for an all water matcha latte, bc you don't have a recipe for it is simply silly. Don't push me off because you don't get it. I love sump but that was enough to turn someone else who didn't love sump away. Thanks for making my iced americano after a thorough dial in. I sincerely do appreciate y'all. Kudos. read more
