It was okay, the coffee that day was a floral citrus type which I didn't care for. However, I won't be back for the fact I do prefer sugar in my coffee and they are very pretentious about the fact that sugar is never needed. My husband & I went to Sump this morning: it was the best part of our day! Absolutely outstanding. I automatically have a good feeling about this place because there are no flavored syrups or large sized to-go cups to be found. The menu is carefully selected and crafted with meticulous care. I ordered a cappuccino (served standard size: 6 ounces) and my husband ordered a V60 Pourover Intelligentsia Costa Rica. We took a seat while Scott and his associate made our drinks. We found a nice nook with 2 plush leather chairs and a nice coffee table where the Sunday Times was waiting to be read. Our drinks were delivered to us. We decided to share another pourover after we finished our first drinks. SO GOOD. There's something nice about paying at the end of a coffee experience. For all you Kansas City people, Sump is much like Oddly Correct in quality, service and brewing methods. I am not a coffee connoisseur. I drink coffee on occasion and when I do I try to avoid Starbucks at all costs. Sump is 100% coffee. They drink sleep breathe coffee. There's no sugar or creamer available to add to the coffee they offer. They are puritans and don't hide it. The interior is simple and minimalistic. All of their roasting equipment is out in the open. It smells of roasted coffee when you walk in. The cup I had was delicious. Pure coffee taste with nothing else to dilute it. I enjoyed it very much and enjoy what the owner is doing. Be it coffee, bbq, or a steak restaurant there is nothing worse than trying to figure out what the place is about. I've heard so much about this place and of Scott that I had to check it out. Décor: There really isn't that much seating for a place so large. It's very simplistic, with a bit of an old/cool style to it. I'm confused by the second room though because I feel like they could have put in more seats or something rather than some display of trinkets and a couch/sofa thing. Bathroom is simple, but clean. When I went, there was another table of customers and a semi-constant line of customers coming in and out but it was an overall peaceful and quiet little place. Service: Scott will answer any question you have to the fullest with his beard and all! The care he puts into your cup of coffee will not only astound you but, honestly, it almost made me uncomfortable as I felt unworthy to drink his coffee. I guess some may see that as a bad thing... but.. Food: There is no food served (go across the street if need be and get this coffee to go) but my cup of cappucinno was delicious! I lovelovelove foam and this foam was given aplenty. Served at the perfect hot-yet-unscalding temperature, I enjoyed this cup with my laptop and some work here. Overall: This place is quite a bit of a drive for me, but the coffee is absolutely A+! Cool. That is the word that comes to mind when I walk into Sump Coffee. Maybe too cool (for me at least). Either way, studying here makes me feel pretty freakin' cool. Tiny menu. Only a handful of drinks and you can bet that every drink on that small menu is done perfectly. This is not Starbucks - and that is a damn good thing. Sipping on an iced latte while I study/write this review. It is excellent, and extra points for being served in a mason jar. Was a bit tricky to locate since it is sort of tucked away on Winnebago from South Jefferson. Not a ton of seating but it is not very busy at 1:00pm on a Friday afternoon so no problems there. I am not a super hardcore coffee drinker either, which is why I can only give it four stars. It might be the case that their coffee is so damn good that it is five-star-worthy (and based on other reviews that is likely), but my overall impression is very good, but not an absolute home-run. Adding to the Cool factor is the fact that you don't pay until you are on the way out. You just order, they bring you your drink, and you take care of it when you are ready. Just sort of happens. Like many have said, this place is very different from many other local coffee shops in that it doesn't serve any food and it's got it's own vibe going on. When you first come in you order from the bar, and they bring it to your table; you pay later. It's a calm, laid-back vibe, but also sort of industrial -- a good place to get work done, or have a meeting. Like I said, it's different, but mostly in a good way. Walker H. was also right on -- don't just "grab a cup" on your way somewhere; stay and savor it. My latte was not only topped with an artfully done latte design, but it was a beautiful color and had the perfect amount of roast-y flavor. I am so happy to find a place that is as passionate about coffee as I am. Great Coffee. A very unique vibe when compared to the trend of the rising insta-worthy coffee shops. Sticking true to a type of Mississippi River - New Orleans - gothic vibe, but doing it really well. The owner has indefinitely confined himself to having an amazing beard by integrating it with the shop's marketing. His beard lives up to the legend. Dope. Amazing espresso. I believe they've received national recognition for their espresso. Regular V60 coffee is really great as well. If you're in St. Louis, you've gotta stop in and experience Sump. read more

Great coffee shop. It is hard to knock sumps. The owner of the store is very friendly and knowledgeable on coffee. They do brew a good cup but most of their blends are not what I perfer (they tend to be on the lighter side). My biggest problem with Sumps (which is a small one) is that they don't have outdoor seating. And in my opinion few things compare to sitting outside on a beautiful day drinking a great cup of coffee. read more

This place definitely cares about their coffee. They really take the time and effort to ensure that your coffee is the best you've ever had. It feels so incredibly pretentious that it was almost ironic. Regardless of the hipster aura and 'pinky-up' attitude surrounding you, I got the best damn iced coffee I've ever had. Finally, a place that doesn't load your coffee down with a bunch of ridiculous syrups, sugars, and lies. I am by no means a coffee snob, but I hate how everyone is always trying to cover up the flavor of their coffee with sugar, syrups, whipped cream, drizzles, and anything else. I got an Iced Chai Latte with soy milk (you could also get whole milk if you aren't lactose intolerant). Seriously, the best coffee I've ever had. I never got the feeling that the baristas were pretentious hipsters talking down to me, but that is absolutely the atmosphere you get when you walk in. Best latte on this planet, possibly in the universe (though I hear that Neptunian beans when roasted properly and served with goats milk from Pluto are just out of this world). I realize - as my loyal readers will point out (is it true there's a blog about moi?) - that I've said this before about two, possibly three other coffee shops. We made our pilgrimage to Sump last weekend. For coffee geeks this is heaven. Baristas who actually can give you the lowdown from where the coffee beans were grown, to how they were roasted, to infusion and extraction processes and subtle flavor notes. Three of the four of us on this trip drank coffee. The fourth drew a large gasp from all who were in the room when she proclaimed that she didn't drink coffee. Sump is all about coffee. No food (except for scheduled Sunday brunches). No tea. No frou frou drinks. Just amazing coffee for 3.75 and exquisite espresso for 2.75. We tried three types of coffee; and two types of espresso. If we lived closer we'd definitely be regulars. For the coffee snob. It's worth the trek. Buy some beans while you're there. For the Starbucks coffee lover. It's a nice change of pace to drink some coffee that's had some love poured into it. For the flavored latte lover and blended coffee fan. This is not your place. Turn back now. You will not like. This place has it all. Scott is an awesome dude, and is always working hard for the customer. They are roasting some amazing beans there, and everything is always on point. Last week I asked Scott if he could show me exactly how fine I should be grinding for my chemex and he brought the coffee grinds over to my table and showed me. Everyone there is no nice and its so chill. Kitchen Kulture on Sundays is putting out some of the best food in STL, no doubt. That lady is working her butt off and is so kind. Last week it was $11 for some amazing grits with aged white cheddar, huge amount of eggs, and the best bacon you will ever have that was from a butcher in Belleville IL. Fabulous coffee, IMO, as a coffee aficionado--the best in STL. So committed were we to finding wonderful coffee in STL, we drove from West County (in town to visit family)-35-40 minutes each way. My normally impatient spouse agreed --t was well with the drive. These people are serious about their coffee!! Plainly a great deal of pride in the pursuit of excellence goes into every cup. You do have to request cream or sugar from the barista--but in fairness, neither coffee nor cappuccino needed it. The shop is very pretty and the people working and visiting there are tres nifty!! Literally marvelous coffee. I got a soy latte today. It may be the best latte I've had in St. Louis, and I have tried a good portion of the coffee shops in STL. But just to note, this place is hella hipster. I think I was the only one not wearing a beanie. The staff wasn't snobby though, and was very helpful in suggesting a espresso ground I was buying for a cousin's Christmas present. A bummer about this place is that I don't think they sell baked goods, like many coffee shops. Or at least I didn't see any. Honestly though, it's worth having to stop elsewhere for the other half of your breakfast or snack. read more
