The first thing that struck me about The Mud House was the atmosphere. It's everything I love about Cherokee Street. hip, eclectic, welcoming, and full of character. The space has a unique vibe that makes you want to linger over a cup of coffee and soak it all in. The staff was friendly and attentive, and I was impressed by how quickly our food arrived. Even better, everything was delicious. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the coffee was good too. This is exactly what you'd hope for from a neighborhood café. I've been here twice. Once for breakfast where I ordered the american breakfast, french toast + blueberry compote and a spiked coffee. The price for food doesn't represent the quality, serving nor taste. I returned recently to grab a quick lunch which was the turkey club and vanilla latte. Online it states that she sandwich would be crustless but that's not what I received. The components of sandwich were as stated but again, not enough for $17. Lots of the potatoes were overcooked. After trying to have brunch at a few other spots unsuccessfully due to sucky parking or ridiculous wait times, I returned to my standby! And I was not disappointed. No long lines or wait time! My breakfast and espresso were delicious! I had a macchiato and the Mudslinger (black bean chili, potatoes topped with over-medium eggs), with a side of bacon (of course). Visited here from out of town, the food is overpriced, nothing too extraordinary to return. The coffee was not as strong it was very milky and tasted watered down, I could not taste the caramel flavor. The peach matcha was decent, refreshing. Came with a friend on a Saturday and was worried it would be too busy to find a table but we were able to find one right away and didn't have too long of a wait in the line. We got both drinks and food. I got the Apple grilled cheese and espresso tonic. The sandwich was soo good and the espresso tonic was so refreshing. The patio seating was nice. Decided to visit this little gem after doing some antique hunting on Cherokee...amazing! It begins with the coolest and coziest vibe in the dining room...old school walls, windows and floors. Coffee and concoctions are top notch. Wifey had the burrito, great smokey flavor, eggs prepared perfectly and fresh tortilla. Fantastic portion size...not too big or too small. I had the Apple and Brie grilled cheese; fresh grilled bread and a drizzle of honey. Would recommend getting some sort of side, as it's pretty small and found myself wanting more once finished. One of three strips of bacon was crispy. I think the potatoes were cooked in advance because the temperature of the potatoes didn't seem like they just came off the grill. The lavender lemonade seemed a little watered down and I couldn't really smell the lavender. The people behind the counter were very helpful and friendly. I also had the Cobb salad, a few brown pieces of lettuce I had to pick out but overall very tasty. I also decided to have the turkey club. That was subpar. The potato's were off the chain. I do wish the staff checked on tables a little more not sure what my tip was for other than them being nice while they typed my order in and brought it to me. You do have option to clear your own table as well. So it was kind of like BreadCo. Indoor seating did feel cramped and it was loud with everyone talking. We went at 12:30 in afternoon. Was a cute little place, this place is decorated so fun! Every wall has something to look at, including the bathroom! The bathroom had vintage board games decorating the walls. The energy in this place was hipster, in the best way! This place felt LGBT+ friendly and had very inclusive menu options! They had vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options! I had the breakfast burrito and the burrito was vegetarian and it had vegan chill in it! I think it could have used some more refreshing items in the burrito like pico or salsa. The plate came with a small side of pico but it wasn't liquidy enough. It also came with two pickles and I could tell they were pickled in house, they were amazing! I could have eaten a whole jar of those pickles! I also got the dank and stormy, which was cold brew mixed with ginger beer! It was an interesting combo, pretty unique. I wouldn't say it's for everyone but it was a fun experience trying it. The parking was all street parking. There was a step to get into the cafe and no ramp. Another beautiful coffee shop to add to your list. I just moved to benton park and will 100% be frequenting mud house way too often. It offers a diverse array of guests. Some come to study, some come for a quick coffee, others for breakfast with community. A stunning interior is anchored by eclectic decor kissed with St. Louis swagger. Strong loyalty to St. Louis and its wonderful residents is prevalent throughout. The workers were all great. I was worried that btwn the holiday and recent ice/snow we would have difficulty with parking but each of found a spot on the street without difficulty. You can order breakfast or lunch items. Several options sounded good but I narrowed down to the turkey avocado club. The sandwich also had bacon and tomato jam on it. Yum. A nice size too. We ordered Biscuits and Gravy, Avocado Toast, Eggs, Bacon, Tea, Lemonade and Cookies. I thought it was cute that the green tea was also served with a cookie. For two entrees, two sides of eggs, two non-alcoholic drinks, and one dessert it was around $50. I really enjoyed the Avocado Toast, dare I say it's one of the best I've ever had! When in Saint Louis last week I tried a few new places, but one big recommendation worthy of a share. I will first highlight the area where the Mud House is located. Benton Park is a true gem in Saint Louis. The neighborhood is a mix of 1800 homes, antique shops & art galleries. They even have a vintage record shop, Dead Wax Records. Just weeks ago they had a street fair. Some of the early residents were likely employed by Anheuser Busch that's nearby. The exterior two story turn of the century brick structure is well maintained. Signage is a bit tough as it's only in their window. Parking is off street. I felt safe during the day. I enjoyed on a weekday brunch with my son. The building on the corner of Cherokee & Illinois is a late 1800 to early 1900 charmer. It appears to have always been a business, possibly a grocery. Order is by walk up with menu boards displayed. The staff happily answered questions for me and smiled. This was a fantastic start. After a bit of debate i went with a favorite dish biscuits and gravy. The Mud House offers a comfortable hip, friendly vibe with everything scratch. The seating is somewhat limited and there are a few tables outside. Everything was clean. My biscuits & gravy was the best take on the dish I've ever had with a hint of Sherry. The coffee was solid as well. A place I totally would return to and encourage others to give a shot. read more

Review Visit: November 7th, 2018 A synonym is when two words have similar meaning. A synonym for coffee for example, would be mud or dirt or joe. So, having a place called The Mud House, while odd-sounding, is fitting. A delicious cup of whatever-you-want-to-call-it can be had anywhere. But, is The Mud House a home for delicious coffee? After departing super early for a day of exploring St. Louis, I told myself I would hold off on coffee until I made it there. Checking my list of coffee shops to visit, I decided to try The Mud House as it had stellar reviews and tantalizing photos. So, I punched the address into my GPS and hit the road. As I got into the city and was nearing my destination, the area started to look familiar. Come to realize, I had previously been here when I tried out Shameless Grounds a few years ago before a Dream Theater concert. Actually, right around the corner from Shameless is a really beautiful area and that is where The Mud House is. The combination of trees shedding their leaves and a historic area is a mix I can get behind. Upon approaching, I could tell this place was a hit. There were a lot of people sitting outside, enjoying a warm drink on a cool autumn weather. As I neared the front door, I could hear the bustle of people inside and see through the front door that it was packed. Luckily, I was hitting the tail-end of a lunch rush, so I was able to look over the menu without worrying about a line forming behind me and then also place an order at my leisure. While placing an order for an iced caramel latte, I started talking to the barista and mentioned I was in town to see Coheed and Cambria. He was surprised to hear that as his friend's band was opening for them. (That band is called 'Maps and Atlases', by the way.) After placing an order, they gave me a 'human-faced/dog head' instead of a number and said they would bring my drink out to the table. It seems they use goofy animal heads for bringing out orders instead of numbers. I took some candid photos with it while sitting at my table. Speaking of sitting at a table, the place was still packed for lunch, so I had to sit down with a complete stranger, which thankfully they were ok with. I made small talk with them and the table next to us. I think it was all our first time there, because we kept joking about the animal heads and how goofy-fun it was that they used them. Upon delivery of my drink, I moved quick to consume it as the afternoon crash was about to hit and I wanted to veer it off with some mud. My first sip was a shock. Very bitter and thick. The drink had a consistency of chocolate milk, which is a first for me, as these drinks tend to be more watery. But, after a few sips, it went from shocking bitter to delectably yummy. I ended up really liking the drink by the time I was halfway through. I just regret getting the normal size and not the large. While I was sitting there, I watched them serve food to the tables around me. All those meals looked absolutely ravishing. I normally just get coffee at places like this, but I am starting to realize I need to try their food as well, as most places seem to have a delicious-looking menu. Not only that but this place, like many others, had a tantalizing array of baked goods, which you can see in a photo below. Someday I will cave in and devour one of those massive cookies at a coffee shop. As for the feel of the coffee shop, it was cozy but eclectic. I didn't get a good feel for how the place was since it was packed with people, but it's definitely a unique place based on the random stuff they have hanging up. While I am sure St. Louis has no shortages of coffee shops and I will eventually try them all, I can safely say that if I need a good cup of mud, I know where to go. read more

I've been going to Mud House for years, and I dunno if it's a new kitchen manager or cooks, but the love is gone from the food. The biggest tell for me was when they started using microwave sausage products, and baked beans straight out of the can. And the lack of consistency when cooking eggs. Sunny side up are still raw and over easy are over cooked. And what's with the sudden addition of parsley flakes like it's the 1980s? I hate to complain and write this review, especially since I've loved Mud House for years as a go to spot. Please bring back the love in the food. read more

Came here for brunch on a Sunday morning. There was a small line but it moved very quickly. Had the oat milk horchata latte - was incredible! Also ordered the apple scone (tasty) and the mud slinger breakfast - it was excellent, the black bean chili elevates it. The food/drink was all delicious, the only negative might be that the space is a bit small so tables feel a little tight if you choose to sit indoors (it was cold out!).
