After an incredible journey in the national parks of Utah and camping for nine days, my boyfriend and I decided to stop in Baker city after looking at several reviews for breakfast. Sumter Junction restaurant seemed the most appealing. And boy did we make the right decision! My boyfriend decided to order the country bennies and I ordered the country fried steak. My boyfriend shoved several bites of his country bennies in my mouth with the flaky fluffy biscuit, perfectly cooked poached eggs smothered with the thick sausagy gravy and just right hash browns. My country fried steak did not disappoint! After working at a truck stop I may know a thing or two about this particular breakfast favorite. The meat was tender surrounded by crispy fried goodness with the previously mentioned country gravy. My medium eggs were cooked beautifully when you cut into them and the yolk oozes a bit onto the hash browns. The secret aardvark sauce was a tasty bonus. To top off the experience, service and Choo Choo train were wonderful! read more

My husband and I stopped by for a late breakfast. My husband had a recent surgery making it difficult for him to sit in a booth. Our waitress was very accommodating and showed us to a table where he was able to stretch out his leg. Even though we were the only ones in that area, she was very attentive and friendly. The food was GREAT, too. The portions are fairly large which left us with leftovers for later. We will definitely stop by again. read more

I came here a few years ago when some friends and I were driving through Baker City on our way to Denver. Decided to stop again on our way to Texas. Cute little restaurant that serves the basic diner food. Nothing spectacular, but a decent place to eat when on a long drive. Nice and attentive staff, and are willing to accomodate. The hash browns not the good shredded kind that are golden and crispy - they were the other shredded kind. The kind that you really can't eat even if you douse them in gravy. Speaking of gravy, nothing special about their country gravy. Here's the good part, eggs over medium and over hard both cooked perfectly. Here's the great part, the bacon we ordered well done was the best we have ever had. We also had sausage links which were tasty but I suggest the bacon because it is the best crispy thick meaty bacon I've ever eaten. Oh and the train that travels around the place is entertaining. The family and I have been here twice now during road trips. It's close to I-84 and near several fuel stations. Our fist trip here I remember the food being okay. Nothing special, but a good place to stop and have a decent sit down meal. We went for breakfast today. The kids love the trains inside and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We got our food and it was cooked well and the pancakes and bacon for the kids were delicious. The wife liked hers too. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. I cannot figure out why restaurants don't make homemade biscuits and homemade gravy. The stuff the have me were canned biscuits and canned gravy. County gravy is one of the cheapest and easiest things you can make and it make a huge difference when you pair it with your meals. I'm sure at some point we will go back here but until they cook some real gravy I'll just order something else. UPDATE: went back here with the family and found that they have recently changed the menu with some unique dishes. I chose to have the corned beef Benedict. It was excellent. They definitely made an upgrade to the menu and this place is well worth the stop. read more

I've been coming to sumpter junction since I was a little kid. My family always stopped there on our way from WA to ID. The toy train that runs through the place makes for a fun atmosphere. My favorite things to order back then, were the pancakes and a hot chocolate with whip cream. I've stopped there twice now as an adult. The train is still there, but the nostalgia has kind of faded away after the second visit. The food was okay...nothing to shout about. The fries really needed some seasoning. The prices aren't high and the service staff was quick and attentive which made me feel a bit better. Maybe and updated facility might attract a little bit more of a diverse crowd...Still a really fun place to take kids if you need a quick stop along your way. read more
