Fred Groos is hands down the best bootfitter I have ever worked with. My family previously purchased three pairs of boots from a high-end bootfitting store in the Vail Valley, but I decided to try Sun & Ski--and I am so glad I did. Fred was patient, incredibly knowledgeable, and genuinely compassionate. He listened carefully as I explained the pain I've experienced in ski boots for years--even those from expensive specialty shops. For the first time, I truly felt heard and understood. I have skied my entire life, starting at age four, and I had never known skiing without boot pain. Fred took the time to explore multiple solutions and never once rushed me. He genuinely cared about getting it right. Some shops don't seem to take female skiers seriously, but Fred absolutely did. I hadn't even planned to buy boots that day; I was just browsing. But thanks to Fred's expertise, I ended up purchasing the best boots I've ever owned. I literally cried when I skied in them--no pain and no break-in period. I had resigned myself to the idea that I'd need $1,500 custom boots forever, but Fred found the perfect pair for me for just $600, tax included. Because my experience was so incredible, I insisted my husband return the following weekend to buy his boots from Fred as well. Great place to shop. I recently came in for a roof rack and had some of the part numbers. I was assisted by Fred who was able to help put the puzzle together. My car is an Audi S4 and has no base bars so it is a bit more to put together than normal. Fred identified the parts we needed and setup an install date. Whether you've gotten boots before and know what you're looking for, or you're new and have no clue. Nick is the guy to help you out! I was having problems with my boots hurting and being very uncomfortable and he was able to fix it and make them rideable again! Gray, in the rental area of Avon, Co., is super rude! I might equate it to a "kick the cat" syndrome, as we got the brunt of his bad day. Our flight was a bit delayed, thus we went directly here to pick up our ski rental reservation. Polite is not in this guy's dictionary. We had no problem with the store"s policy of no service due to the fact that it was10 min before closing. But he berated us and went on a tyrant about it before we could say "sure, no problem". Super strange. He said "you should have done a better job trip planning". Also, odd because he wasn't even the one helping us, he was helping another family and there was a guy and his son behind us. "Jack ass" was a mild assessment of this dude. Then he proceeded to yell that this was HIS store AND complain about "Americans" (and that he was from Norway). That night I looked up the corporation's website and found out it's HQ is in Texas...my home state. What an irony. I am going to come back and edit this review with the name of the other guy working there last night... because he was super nice and helpful. He deserves a shoutout. read more

I've had my ski equipment for quite a while now, but never thought to replace it, maybe thinking they're made of titanium and last forever? Well, a rude reminder came when I discovered that a heel plate had actually fallen off on my right boot! Good excuse to go shopping - but it's not THAT easy. Searches online and in-person landed me at this place. Sun & Ski Sports has stores in many places (Utah, NW..), and known more for ski rentals than sales - at least that's my impression based on Yelp reviews. This store is huge: it covers a lot of different outdoor activities, summer and winter. By the time I went, it was sort of late in the season; they already started moving the winter stuff into a corner. First day, I got almost no attention in an empty store, until someone finally came up to greet me. I had to go back the following day because the boot guy was off. In the mean time, I'd done more searches on line. Bob looked after my fitting, and made some useful suggestions. I ended up with a pair that's bolstered by a pair of Superfeet inserts that suit my high arches. He also cautioned against using the new boots with GW on old bindings - guess I'll have to wait till next season before I can try everything out, since I was not able to find skis that I wanted. It sayys they close at 9, but they really close at 8, midweek We always stop at this shop when we visit Avon. No matter what the season, they always have whatever you need for the current sports season. Eric was really helpful showing us their cool selection of cruiser bicycles. The Avon CO store policy on coupons is awful. You give customers a whole coupon book, but then say only 1 is allowed per transaction. When I went to check out and Kelly had to ring up 3 separate transactions, she was pissed. I was apologizing (for what I don't even know), while she didn't say a word in response and rolled her eyes. So sorry that I'd like to save $60 off the $1,000 I'm spending. So sorry you can't provide decent customer service because you're mad about your store's ludicrous coupon policy, Kelly. Great opportunity for you to empathize with your customer and be apologetic but go ahead and be rude instead. You likely don't get paid enough to care. read more

I recently went to Vail for a Skip trip with some friends. I haven't been skiing in a long time...and probably 15 years since I've been to Vail. I did a little bit of research and compared around 5 ski rental places in the area. Most places were $50-$70 a day for basic Ski's and Poles. NOT SUN & SKI! Only 25 a day. Literally 1/2 the price and the service was fantastic. I later found out the place on the mountain used the exact same Skis and charged around $60 a day. They also have a ton of other gear you can buy. The only downside is they don't rent helmets. This seems a little strange since everywhere else does but I don't really care that much. After all, their ski rentals are 1/2 the price! read more

This place is HUGE and AWESOME. Two people in my group rented skis here during our recent visit. While waiting for them to pick up their gear (which only took 25 minutes, including a comprehensive questionnaire and fitting) I checked out the store's offerings. Despite being the middle of the season, skis, boards, bindings and boots were on sale for WAY cheaper than I could ever get at home. This really surprised me. They still had some 2017 closeout models for about 75% off too!!! The people with us who rented skis were very happy. One of them even exchanged skis for a snowboards one night, then back to skis the next night with no problem at all. Great place. read more

Pluses: they had the exact item I needed and it was quickly spotted upon walking in Minuses: they (Yeti's) were all locked up with no one around to unlock them, the checkout process took forever! We were in a hurry to get back to the airport so I think I'm extra sensitive to the timeliness (or lack thereof) of this visit, but it's worth mentioning in case others are in a hurry too. Because the pandemic drove everyone outdoors, we have experienced a widespread bike shortage also in Southern California. After an extensive and frantic internet search, I happened to find that Sun and Ski had some inventory available on-line. I ordered three bikes, and one of them came from the Avon store. Once I identified the model, size and color, the entire purchase experience was really simple. The bike arrived in a few days mostly assembled. The prices were significantly better than other stores in the area, and the service was EXCELLENT. The staff was super friendly and made sure we felt comfortable and safe before hitting the trails. I thought this store was a great find - they had swim trunks in the offseason. I bought a pair that ended up being a little loose so back to return them the next day. An exchange? No problem they said. I grabbed the same brand, same style, off the SAME RACK and they tried to charge me another $18! I showed the clerk they had the same tags and were even the same price. Another (manager?) leaned in to say they must no longer be on sale. Are you kidding me?!? 24hrs later I brought back unused clothing with all hangtags still attached, original receipt in my hands and I can't exchange ill-fitting clothing for something that works!?! If you want a great pair of ski boots fitted by a foot specialist and ski enthusiast, then go see Eric at Sun & Ski. Eric measured my feet and then explained the best fit for length, width and arch. Sun & Ski has a good selection of boots to choose from, unlike some other local stores. I ended up with the best ski boots! Eric also set me up with skis and bindings. The whole package was a terrific value for my money. I skied 3 times on my new skis before we have to say goodbye to this ski season and take the long drive home. I cannot lie, the first two days were really kind of tight here and there, as Eric said they should be. I continued making micro adjustments and the third day was awesome. I cannot tell you how important it is to find someone like Eric, and a store like Sun & Ski, to be on your side when you make an investment in your ski equipment. read more

To start off I would give this place 0 stars if I could, but I can't so... anyway I had a very poor experience at this store which was extremely dissapointing. I came in with a problem with my boots which I'd bought from another sun & ski, it had nothing to do with the store, but just an issue with the boot. I go up and the front cashier people all looked extremely young and when I described to them the problem with my boots they sent me to the back where their boots were. They were not very communicative and acted like they didn't know what I was talking about and were not very knowledgeable. They gave me weird looks and were hesitant to even acknowledge my presence. I then spoke to one of the employees who directed me back towards the front where rentals were. The tech there was somewhat helpful, but then directed me to another guy who wasn't even there yet. We then waited and finally talked to the guy (Bob, who was a manager) and made me feel bad for bringing them in (told me I should've done it sooner), thought I was trying to scam them out of new boots (which I wasn't) and essentially told me the guy I needed wasn't even there to help and I'd have to keep my boots there. There was a slight issue with the heat function in my boot and he told me that it hadn't even been that cold lately so why did I need heated boots anyway. He stated that since I'd worn them already (only about 10 times) that it's such a burden on him to sell used boots. He also told me not to bother going to their other store where they would tell me the same thing. On the verge of tears I almost left them there thinking I couldn't do more, but my boyfriend convinced me to go to the store in Dillon where they were much more helpful and pleasant and hooked me up immediately saying they were so sorry this happened. Highly recommend Sun & Ski in Dillon and will NEVER return to the Avon store ever again. read more
