This "2.5 hour rafting trip" is more like a 1.5 hour bus ride, 15 minutes of instruction and a 45 minute rafting trip. There is only one real decent rapid on the trip. They actually pull you out of the water before going through it to lengthen the time of the trip, but bill it like they are showing you what to expect. Then you finish the trip by getting ambushed by mosquitoes when you pull out. Not worth the $200 we spent for 4 people IMO. read more

Our rafting experience in early August of 2010, with Sun Country Rafting (a division of Sun Country Tours) was nothing but a terrifying life changing experience. We took the Big Eddy as it was sold to us over the phone as recommended for 6 to 106 year olds. It was nothing like that. To start off they were running late. When we got to our destination they hurried us onto rafts, everyone was given life vests, however none of their staff checked them on us for proper fit. Our guide gave us very little and poor instruction on safety. On our raft, beside my 10 year old, there were an 11 and 12 year old girls. Their mother had asked during her phone reservation, for a "float down the river", she too was told that the Big Eddy trip is recommended for 6 to 106 years olds, and was recommended to our same trip. As Amy K. said in her 6-9-11 Yelp review, "It was pretty mellow except for the rapid section (class III), which was a pretty intense ride". Fortunately for her, she did the Big Eddy inside a raft. Unfortunately for us, our guide, we found out later was not very experienced with this set of rapids, started us down the wrong part of the rapids, which caused our raft to flip, we all went down the whole set of the Big Eddy rapids either holding on to the upside down raft, or without it. Going down these rapids was terrifying, it was like being in a washing machine; parts of our bodies were intensely hitting abrasive lava rocks (see photos). At first I was able to grab my son, however when the raft hit me and went over me, I had to let go of him. I almost drowned after being caught under our raft; my life vest was floating up in front of my face and I was unable to get away from under the raft. My wife, the 11 and 12 year old girls, and their mother grabbed onto the sides of raft for dear life. My wife's face was covered with water most of the time; she swallowed a lot of water. They and the raft were hitting the sharp rock as well. My wife thinks she passed out, as she does not remember how she ended up being on an over crowded raft belonging to a group in front of us. Towards the end, my son got trapped under another raft; he said he thought he was going to drown. On the rescue rafts, my wife and I thought that our son had drowned, as when we called for him he did not respond. He ended up being in another rescue raft, terrified, shaking and could not talk. Our guide never apologized for what happened. Management was not much better. Everyone from our raft ended up in the emergency clinic that day. Our vacation which had just started was spent mostly recuperating. During this terrifying event my wife lost her wedding ring and I lost by wallet that was secure on me for what I was expecting. Almost two years later, my wife and I still have lasting injuries. I had to have knee surgery. I tried to get Sun Country Tours, the parent company of Sun Country Rafting to pay for our losses and expenses, to date they have refused to pay any of them. I would not ever do any type of event that Sun Country Tours offers. I personally think they mislead people; they promote the "fun" of their trips, and conveniently leave out the risks of their events. They try to cover themselves with a waiver that requires everyone sign after you get there. When I read their waiver, it appears to reflect other, much more dangerous trips they have, not ours, as ours was sold to us over the phone as "recommended for 6 to 106 year olds". Safety does not appear to me to be much of a concern of theirs. When there is a problem, especially when they are negligent, they do not step up and take any responsibility. I think they were grossly negligent in the way they handled our trip. I think that the rafting industry needs to be better regulated; regulations that require much better disclosure of the risks involved, especially when making non refundable reservations over the phone, also that much better passenger training and safety instructions be given, also very important, that the wearing of helmets be mandatory. Until one goes through what we went through, one does not know how terrifying and dangerous these seemly "fun" rafting trips can be. read more

Rented tubes from this company from their outpost along the Deschutes River in bend, just a bit away from the Old Mill District. The Staff was very helpful and friendly, and the equipment was in good repair. We were able to drop in about 100' from where we rented the tubes, and cruise down the river and get out at Drake Park, and ride a bus shuttle back to the starting point (shuttle provided by the city at a cost of $1.50 per ride). All in all a good experience -- would rent again or rent stand up paddle boards from them again. read more

We took a lesson and two-hour stand up paddle board rental on the Deschutes, hot day in August. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. SUP was a great way to spend the afternoon, especially after two days of hiking and sore legs / blisters. Eric, our instructor, was stellar. Professional, easy-going, attentive-but-not-too-attentive. We were able to get the basics down and enjoy the river for a really lovely afternoon. The lesson included some tips on land, more tips while in shallow water, and then time alone without the instructor to practice. Free bottled water, too. read more

Just drying our shoes from the Big Eddy trip, and we're still talking about it! My wife and I have done rafting a couple times in our lives, so we're no pros on the rapids. Great service from the first phone, with quick answers and good suggestions for what we wanted to do. Showed up to the Sunriver office and Laura was a big help. Smiley, knowledgeable and quick to offer suggestions on what to bring for clothing on the 60 degree and overcast day. Scott was our driver, and made the 20 minute trip to the Bend office a treat. Usually I dread the small talk in the car, but Scott had great stories and personality, and offered some great suggestions on activities for the rest of our stay. He was just as good going back. The team on the excursion was superb. Iain was our guide, and was a dream to have on the trip. Excellent conversation, genuinely funny jokes, took safety seriously, and guided us down the rapids with a deft touch. Tips: Sit in the front for an immersive (and wet) experience. And "ride the bull" at the end. If you've got more time, do the longer trips, because the Big Eddy leaves you wanting more. read more

Despite my nagging concerns about taking an 8 and a 10 year old down the rapids, I was super impressed at how professional and knowledgable Our guide, Jason, was. We flew in from Sarasota, FL for a week in Oregon/Washington and spent a few days in Sun River. We wanted to try our hand at whitewater rafting and it was recommended to us to check out Sun Country. My husband and I did few different trips with Sun Country Tours this summer. We went on Lower Deshutes, McKenzie and Deshutes river together. Each trip was a lot different: scenery, river levels, rapids. Guides are very professional, funny and entertaining. We felt very safe on each trip. I think our favorite was Lower Deshutes. Rapids are the biggest. Lunch part was delicious - grilled burgers with fresh cut fries. Meryn did a good job guiding. Our next adventure is North Umpqua next summer. I recommend to everyone use Sun Country Tours for your rafting adventure! read more

River Float. A must if you visit Bend and want a great family event to cool off. Very safe and a lazy river experience. Rent tubes at the river and float the beautiful Deschutes River through downtown Bend. including man made rapids. About 1.5 hours. The only downside is the shuttle that brings you back for 3 dollars a head. The service snd bus is great but expect about an hour wait at the end of the float because there are not enough buses on the route to handle the amount of people using the service from the local bus company. If they get the wait time down this would be a 5 star event. Sun Country is a class act. read more

This is for rentals at RiverBend park trailer. 1 Star for The 2 boys working table, they seemed a bit over worked or heavily medicated?? Not sure but their demeanor in dealing w/public needs some serious attention! However once we left the table Rose did an exceptional job helping us get our tubes and answering all our questions! Our family and three others (20 people total) go to Sunriver on annual vacations and this year the kids were finally old enough for us to revisit a white water rafting experience. We had taken a trip with Sun Country Tours before (pre-kids) and knew that it was a fun ride. And nothing has changed. From the booking process to the adventure itself, things went without a hitch. We did the Big Eddy Thriller and had kids as young as 7 in the boats and had no problem at all. The younger ones just sit in the boat and hold on tight and enjoy the ride. Older kids got to "ride the bull" at the front of the boat and went for a swim during the calm stretches on the river. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and the company made sure that our large crew was evenly distributed across three boats. We doubly appreciated the air conditioned bus given the heat and crazy traffic back to Sunriver. The only reason this is not 5 stars is that the time on the water seemed a bit short given the long bus ride (traffic did not help) and the picture package was a bit expensive - I wish you could pick and choose pictures. Oh, and don't let any fear stop you from going...it's fun and relatively easy...just prepare to get WET! read more

We did the 3-day option, starting with the lower deschutes all day, then Mckenzie, then big eddy. This order was perfect, from longest day to shortest, ending with a short series of class 3 rapids. The guides knew their way down the rivers and provided more historical and geographical backstory to the terrain. Each river was a beautiful surprise. read more

Waited 30 min for tubes, in a line being managed by a brain dead shitdick. Then, got to the end of the float and the line was so long, we waited 90 min for the shuttle. You guys suck ass.....hope your tube overturns on the rapids during a company party and you have to be retrieved by a dive team. read more

Had a blast today with this rafting trip!! We had the best guide! His name was Jordan and he made our family trip amazing! The only thing I would recommend would be for this company to tell you how long of a drive it is to get there. It took two and a half hours and we had no idea. Due to us having kids on the trip it would have been nice to know so that we could bring activities for the bus ride there to entertain them. So even though we started out shocked and disappointed Jordan our guide made this trip worth it! read more

Did the Big Eddy rafting trip with the family while we were in Sunriver for vacation. A few of us had been white water rafting before, but it was a first time for most of the crew. This is a good route for first timers, but a little disappointing for thrill seekers. Starts with 20 minutes of flat water, then only about 5-7 minutes of actual rapids. Granted, there are several class twos and threes in a row, but that is really all this route has to offer. After that, its another 20 minutes of floating with maybe another class one. Again, great for first timers, but a few of us would have loved a little more excitement or more spread out rapids. Nothing against the Sun Country crew - our bus driver was great and our guide on the river, Ryan, was also really great. Next time, we'll do a little more research to see what else the area has to offer. read more

My teen daughters and I used SC Tours for the Big Eddy and also a day of SUP & river tubing. The Big Eddy was fun, but too short for us. Our guide, Jackie, was great. She was enthusiastic and got our not-so-chatty group to liven up. Though it was our first time white-water rafting, the Big Eddy wasn't thrilling enough. Definitely fun and definitely wet, but I would book a longer trip next time. SUP and tubing were easy and fun. The staff at the Riverbend Park rental trailer was friendly and organized. I overheard some people while we waited in line who were very rude to the staff (one couldn't bring their dog on the tubes and someone else who insisted they gave a $20 bill but only got change for a $10). The staff were polite in the way they handled it and I commend them for that. Overall, an excellent time on our trips and my own fault for not going with my initial instincts of booking a longer rafting trip. When we return to the area, we will definitely use SC Tours. read more
