It's been a decade since we last had Alaskan King Crab, we wanted to go with a trusted restaurant so good old Sun Sui Wah is where we went. (Richmond is the location to be, we don't like the Vancouver location due to previous incident) We made a reservation two days before, and were immediately seated when we arrived. (11am for lunch). The place was maybe less than half full at the time, but was pretty full by the time we finished. The whole restaurant felt clean and comfortable. We were hoping for an 8 lb king crab (or less) as there were only five of us including two kids that ended up not really eating much of the crab (as expected), and the smallest they had was over 9 lbs, no big deal let's go! We had the king crab three way, garlic steamed for the legs, salt & pepper for the joints, and the rest was made into a fried rice. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, our cravings were truly satisfied. We also had several dim sum items for the kiddos, and they were happy with the quality (not pictured are BBQ pork bun, egg tarts, and XL). I am writing regarding a disappointing experience during a recent dim sum visit to your Richmond restaurant. Our bill was $217.49, and I initially left a $10 tip. A staff member subsequently returned to our table and asked us to give an additional $20. I felt uncomfortable and pressured by this, and ultimately increased the tip to $30. I appreciate that $10 was a modest gratuity. However, the service was very poor. Our servers were inattentive, did not bother to provide basic items such as sauces and soy sauce, and some of the interactions with staff came across as rude. This was particularly disappointing because the standard of service at your restaurant used to be much better. My concern is not about the $20. Gratuities are voluntary, and your receipt presents 15%, 18%, and 20% as suggested tip amounts rather than a mandatory service charge. If a customer feels that the service does not warrant one of those amounts, I do not believe they should be approached and pressured to increase their tip. I was also uncomfortable with staff looking closely at the payment terminal while I was entering my PIN. Customers should be given appropriate privacy while entering their PIN or completing payment. I am not seeking reimbursement or trying to make an issue over the money. I would simply appreciate clarification of your tipping policy and ask that management address these practices with staff. Customers should be able to choose an appropriate gratuity based on the service they receive without feeling pressured or embarrassed. I have enjoyed your restaurant in the past, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. I hope management will take these concerns seriously. read more

When we were in Vancouver, we just had to stop in Richmond (the 626 of Vancouver) to eat some Chinese food. So we decided on Sun Sui Wah for dim sum. We followed Google maps to the restaurant and found out the entrance was on the back side of the building so we moved our car. It was pretty busy on a Sunday morning, but the wait wasn't too long once we put our name down. No carts here, you order off the paper menu and they bring the food to you. The dim sum was good, they had a couple things I haven't seen in So Cal like Baked shredded radish so I had to give it a try - it was very good! If you plan on having leftovers, do what the locals do and bring your own container. Otherwise they charge you 50 cents for a takeaway box. read more

We ordered all the staples - congee, har gow, shiu mai, chicken feet, etc. As a life-long resident of SGV, I have to say this was the best dim sum restaurant we've been to. A few things worth noting: - No push carts here. - Alcohol-friendly. Was surprised to see people enjoying beer so early in the morning! - Easily the least greasiest dim sum I've ever had. I've been to Sun Sui Wah in Richmond over 20 times -- mostly for dinner, with just a handful of dim sum visits. Their food has always been consistently good and I genuinely enjoy it every time. They used to be famous for their roasted squabs, but not so much these days. If you want a really good squab, Rose Garden on Kingsway in Vancouver is really good! They're known for their roast squab so we ordered that but I didn't find the taste mindblowing. It was juicy and the skin was crispy but I found the meat a bit tough. Note that squabs are fairly small so even if you order a whole one, it isn't really worth the price that you pay. The sweet and sour pork was ok; not the best I've had. The seafood chow mein was a bit better, albeit a bit underseasoned. The vegetable that came with the seafood chow mein was exceptionally crisp though. Probably should've ordered an extra plate of this vegetable lol. Service was ok; a bit inattentive and it took a while to flag down a waiter to pay the bill. My first time visiting the Richmond location of Sun Sui Wah.. was very busy for Father's Day dimsum. Ordered the seafood chow mein, dried scallop/shrimp fried rice, deep fried salted squid, prawn rice roll, siu mai, chicken feet, tripe/tendon and fried taro balls. It was all so so delicious. Loved the old school dimsum but tasted top tier and portion sizes generous. Best of the best was def the fried rice - so much delicious dried scallop and wok hay. Ambiance 3/5 -- Reminiscent of a traditional dim sum restaurant I'd visit with my grandparents and extended family. Massive crabs in tanks and red velvet decor. Food 3/5 -- I was a bit unimpressed and found a caterpillar in the Snow Peas. Snow Peas and Oyster Mushroom (4/5): After it was remade, the snow peas were nicely cooked and mushrooms were tender and juicy. Light sauce coated it nicely Shrimp Rice Roll (2/5): Sauce wasn't flavorful. Green onions inside were a nice touch Shu Mai (4/5): Flavorful and tasty! Chicken Feet (3/5): Sauce was overwhelming, however the chicken feet was very soft and tender. Great texture, sauce not so much Tendon and Tripe 3/5: Overly soft, buttery and creamy. One of the better dim sum options in Richmond. Everything we ordered had good sized portions with lots of flavor. A few things were weird like the pork pastries that seemed to have candied ginger that was off putting, but everything else was devoured. Service was pretty quick, even on a busy weekend. When I'm on vacation, I try to have the local dim sum. On a recent trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, friends recommended this restaurant in the Richmond area. A cousin and his family from Mississippi asked to join us for dim sum, as their grandchildren had never experienced this kind of Chinese food before. Our party of 8 ordered a wide variety of soup, dumplings, and bao. I'm happy the boys were willing to try new things, but I steered clear of the chicken feet and tripe dishes! Cousin likes black bean spareribs and I like hom suey gok, so we made sure to get those. We ordered the usual cha shu bao, Shanghai soup dumplings, ha gow, sui mai, no mai gai, egg tarts, sesame balls, long beans with minced pork in spicy sauce, and deep-fried squid with spicy salt. The won ton soup with shrimp was a good choice, too. I made 10:30am reservations for Wednesday, but the restaurant didn't fill up until a bit later. We took the in-laws to the Richmond location of Sun Sui Wah, after they expressed a wish to try a new (to them) dim sum restaurant. I knew if we arrived just after opening we would have a high probability of securing a table, but out of an abundance of caution I called ahead to make reservations. I had only been to the Vancouver location, but I was happy to see there the restaurant was attached to a relatively large strip mall parking lot. We arrived a little earlier than expected, so it took awhile for the hostess to come out and seat us. I guess I can chalk it up to the staff setting up and getting ready for the day ahead. We checked off our usual list of go-to items: Steamed Prawn Dumpling, Sui Mai, Steamed BBQ Pork Buns, Mini Egg Tarts. We also threw in a few other items to try: Pan Fried Fish Paste with Crepes, Gai Lan with Oyster Sauce, and the staple Shrimp & BBQ Pork Fried Rice. At the time of ordering the restaurant was less than half full, so we received all of our dishes in quick order. The staff kept a close eye on everyone's tables. If you wanted your teapot refilled, if you wanted to put in your order (or pay for it), then we could flag down the right staff member and they immediately notice and respond. It was quite refreshing. Food-wise, the Gai-Lan was the right level of crunch (and yet easy to eat), the fried rice was not oily at all, Egg Tarts not too sweet and most of the dim sum was a very solid thumbs up. The Pan Fried fish paste was a tad too oily for my liking, but it was fun to try a new item. The in-laws absolutely loved the BBQ Pork Buns, proclaiming it was the best they had ever had. I tried one myself and while I don't feel qualified to make the same claim, I readily agreed the Bun was very good. It was stuffed FULL of BBQ Pork, and the pork itself had a generous amount of BBQ sauce and was not too dry. Thanks to the fast food and service, we were in and out in just over an hour, just as the place was starting to fill up with other patrons. Worth a return trip! read more

Trying to branch out from my normal dim sum restaurants, so my friends and I got to try Sun Sui. Its located in a plaza with plenty of parking space. Inside was nicely decorated and the staff was constantly cleaning up tables and setting up new tables. We made reservation but from what I saw when we got there, the table turnover was great. Didn't see a lot of people or group waiting too long. I only wish we had the tables where you had a lazy susan and you can rotate the dishes around the table instead of having to reach over and pass the dishes around. Otherwise, we had a great experience. Everything we order was great and taste great. Service was a bit disappointed as I had to constantly ask for things (ie water) when I shouldn't have to. My family, brough two fresh fish to this restaurant to have dinner. At the beginning, one of the manager Alan who told us that the restaurant would charge $15 per pound for the fish + additional cost of the vegetable. As our fish weight 8.5 lbs. I agreed on the charge which is $127.5. In the meantime, he didn't clearly state the additional charge on the vegetable that stirred fry with the fish, just told me that "may be" around $20 per dish. As all of us were tired after going fishing for the whole day, so I was ok on the additional cost . Besides, I also order a half chicken and a dish of sweet and sour pork and 3 bowls of rice. When I asked for the bill, this restaurant charged me $380. I questioned about the total amount and the cashier explained to me of the items and extra the service charge. What ? At first, the manager strongly recommended not steaming the fish even we wanted to have it. He refused to follow the order. Second, after serving the first round tea, then the waiter and that manager were gone for cigarette break. No water were serving and we needed to ask the cashier to call Manager Alan, but she told us that he was gone for cigarette break. Unfortunately, he didn't come to our table after placing the order. I was angry and embarrassed by going to such scam restaurant. I eventually paid $400 in CASH as the manager requested us to pay in cash (not deducting any GST or PST in the bill). The most ridiculous was the cashier ran to my family member for asking more tips. No service, worst cooking on our fresh fish still asked for more tipping. What a scam! If that restaurant closed down eventually that it deserves by hiding such staff to run the business. read more

4.5 Ask any Vancouver native for which places to eat dim sum and this restaurant is bound to come up on the list. Tried and true, this place is every bit as good as it was many years ago when I first ate here. Don't let the simple strip mall facade fool you, their cuisine is top notch and suitably you also pay a few extra dollars for it. However considering it's not possible to find dim sum made this well anywhere along the East Coast, (or west coast so I've heard), nor service at a dimsum restaurant as professional as they were here, so I gotta rate them higher for both those reasons. Last weekend when I came on a Friday around 1pm, the restaurant was about 50-60% full. They played the World Cup on a couple large TV screens (one filling an entire wall), and all parties were sitting one party to each table (ie. no sharing tables w/strangers). I tried: steamed prawn dumplings, steamed pork siu mai, steamed spareribs in black bean sauce, pan-fried daikon cake, each $9.25*. Additionally steamed beef tendon w/tripe w/chu hot sauce, steamed prawn rice rolls, each $10.25. Then steamed chicken rice w/Chinese sausage $12.95, and steamed Chinese broccoli w/oyster sauce $15.95. Lastly a steamed caramel sponge cake $8.25. First they use good size prawns and not just dinky little shrimp in their dumplings, siumai and rice rolls. The dumpling skins were thin and the noodles were smooth, each item that had filling was generously filled. All was well seasoned, and the portion sizes were at least 25-30% larger than the same items I've had at other dim spot places. What makes it better is each dish is made to order (so though I miss the pushcart experience), this ensures each plate arrives freshly prepared. This probably sounds funny but that Chinese broccoli was cooked to perfection, perfectly crisp and cooked thru and not tough as veggies tend to get when they're not fresh, or harvested too late and the leaves have gotten too fibrous. Probably the best preparation of this dish I've had in all my years of eating dimsum. And want to add that while the caramel sponge cake was tasty, the original translation of the dish means Malay cake, which is more of a denser, spongier, steamed cake rather than fluffy like the one they served. Not only do they serve dimsum, but their traditional multi-course banquet dinners are well-known and appreciated as some of the best classic Chinese dishes this side of the Western hemisphere. They host many a wedding or celebration reception here and the space can be partitioned to book. Want to mention the service I experienced here was terrific, we were seated right away, asked which tea we preferred upon arriving to the table (chrysanthemum naturally) and they came to take our order about 5-7 minutes after we sat down. Food started arriving within 10 minutes of ordering. My trip was off to a great start, due to Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant being my first destination for food in Canada. We tried the roasted squab, the deep fried crab claws stuffed w/shrimp paste, steamed African abalone, deep fried milk w/coconut milk, deep fried prawn roll with seaweed, and a couple other dishes. Overall, everything was tasty. I personally didn't care for the squab or abalone. The squab is a small bird without much meat, but it was a favorite dish for another person in my group. The abalone portion is very tiny and priced at $20 per each piece (with a minimum order of two). We also had a dish with some kind of pepper, and that was tasty; it had a bit of heat to it and was served with a garlic black bean sauce. The deep fried prawn roll with seaweed was interesting and different. The deep fried crab claws stuffed w/shrimp paste were also very tasty; I enjoyed the presentation of this item as well. Dim sum hits different here. Docked a star because we waited for at least 25 minutes to even get our name on the list -- and we were at the front of the line the whole time! Though there was only one lady manning the front and she was doing her best, I think someone to help her would have streamlined the experience. We ordered Chicken Feet, BBQ Pork Bun, Har Gau Shrimp Dumpling, Steamed Rice Rolls, Soup Dumplings, Siu Mai, Custard Buns, and Pu'er Tea. Everything was delicious and I especially liked the Siu Mai and BBQ Pork Bun. They were so fluffy and flavorful and came out so quickly and fresh! The tea was also delicious. You're provided with one pot to start and then another pot, accompanied by hot water to add into the tea as it steeps. I'm not a huge fan of cilantro and there's a lot of it in the rice rolls, but my friends enjoyed them. The Chicken Feet were also a pleasant surprise because I usually find eating them annoying, but this time I was more than happy to. We really enjoyed the food here at Sun Sui Wah. We had 2 meals here. First was dim sum. You order off a menu and mark off a sheet then they bring it to you. Food was fresh and hot and standout dishes were the siu mai and the turnip cake in cubes. Service was just okay and the restaurant decor is very gold. As for dinner, they were having a wedding that night so we had to sit in a private room off to the side. Food was very good as we had fish with vegetables, salted fish with tofu, and a fried rice. My friend made a reservation for the 4 of us on Sunday around 12:30, but we still had to wait 15-20 minutes for a table. Surprisingly we ended up getting seated in a private room which was shared between our group and three others. We enjoyed the dishes we ordered. We got the standard dishes like steamed spareribs, chicken feet, dimplings, etc., and our favorites were #42 pan fried fish paste with crepes and #96 water chestnut roll with almond. One thing we found a bit odd as that they add meat floss and cilantro to their donut rice noodle roll. One of my friends is vegetarian and always gets this at dimsum, but because of the meat floss, he couldn't eat this. Parking is a pain in this lot. We circled around for 10 minutes trying to read all the signs on where we could and couldn't park before we found a spot. Our first time at Sun Siu Wah was 16 years ago after a ski trip to Whistler-Blackcomb and I really wanted dim sum then. SSW was one of the bigger Cantonese restaurants in Richmond and their dim sum is proportional in size. It was years before I started Yelping and I had no way to express how good their dim sum was. They had always advertised their fresh seafood as the specialty of the house and it took us this long to come back to try it. I had called around to see which restaurants had Alaskan King Crab. The manager at SSW said they had one left and it was a pretty big boy. I didn't care and said it was mine and to reserve us a table for that night. Upon our arrival, that crab was sitting front and center in the tank, not knowing his soon-to-be destiny with the chef. Our party of 7 was seated quickly, but after ordering our dinner, the manager shook his head and said we're going to have to move you to a bigger table for 10 with a Lazy Susan. I got worried. As is the custom, the condemned King Crab was brought tableside by a manager for viewing. It was a monster at 8.5kg (18.75lb), the biggest one I had ever seen. Previous ones we've eaten have only been 4.5-5kg (10-11lb), so this was going to be a challenge. We started with our usual West Lake Beef & Cilantro soup and followed by Peking Duck served 2 ways. First, was traditionally with thin pancakes instead of steamed buns. The crispy skin was served with cucumber slices, julienned scallions and hoisin sauce to make a dozen tasty duck burritos. The 2nd way is Duck Meat Hash Lettuce Wraps also with hoisin sauce. We also had Peking Pork Chops, which were very tender and Salt & Pepper Fried Calamari. To balance out the meal, one of the fresh available vegetables of the day was Pea Pod Leaves, so we had that stir-fried with minced garlic & onion and it was a pretty substantial plate. I wasn't sure we needed these dishes but the kids wanted them and the main event was coming up. Our King Crab was cooked 3 different ways. First up were the spiny legs and claws, with shell split open and steamed with lots of minced garlic over a bed of vermicelli. The crab meat was the sweetest I've ever had, but we had to do a little work to pull it out of the exo-skeleton. The thin rice noodles soaked up the flavor of the crab & garlic and were slurped up quickly. The 2nd crab course was the inside body of the crab, dredged in corn starch and deep fried with diced chili peppers and garlic. For such a big crab, it was very meaty in order to move all those spiny legs. The chili peppers gave it a good spicy flavor, but strangely it was served with shoestring French Fries? The 3rd and last crab dish was a Scallop & Asparagus Fried Rice made with the gooey insides of the carapace shell. The fried rice was under seasoned and a little bland, but made for great Yelping (or Instagramming) with the rice stuffed inside the huge spiky shell. Typical of a big Cantonese dinner, Sweet Red Bean soup was served for dessert with fresh sliced oranges. When the check came, I was ready for the worst, but whatever the price, that crab was worth it. I've heard rumors that the dim sum in Canada is almost on par with the dim sum in Hong Kong. Hmm...I can't say that it's true, yet. Regardless, Sun Sui Wah's dim sum was very delicious, and the authenticity and quality of the food is definitely something you can't find across the border in the US in my opinion. I ordered my usuals: sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, turnip cakes, Chinese meatballs, shrimp dumplings. Left with a happy belly! read more

A lot of friends have recommended SSW to me for dim sum, so I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to try it out. We went on the Mother's Day weekend, but we were seated relatively quickly (within 10-20 minutes). The inside is very spacious with lots of tables that are nicely spaced out. However parts of it are also dated (especially the washroom) and look like they could use some reno. There is an expansive menu of different dim sum items, with pricing being on the premium end. Overall the dim sum was good, but I feel it was overhyped as it wasn't as amazing as people made it sound and there were definitely some items that fell short. For instance, the custard lava buns had very little filling. Service was relatively friendly and attentive for a dim sum place. read more

The food at this place was spot on. We had Sui Mai, tripe, chicken feet, soy sauce chow mein, and sesame seed balls. We came on a recommendation to try their roast squad and king crab legs. We'll, no roast squad for lunch time and king crab required buying a whole crab ( about 8 lbs ) which we would be way too much crab for 2 persons. The dim sum was all onnpar with the better dim sum you can find in the San Francisco area. It's a must try place for dim sum. The service could've been a bit more attentive and the ambiance is nice.
