After a full day of driving and hiking from the day before, we needed something soupy for lunch and luckily Sun Vietnamese Restaurant was near by and open. We came right when they open and were the 1st customers. The owner greeted us right away, told the owner we wanted to see how the Pho is in Maine compared to California, as well as support local Vietnamese restaurants. As we sat and ate, the restaurant started to get pack with customers dining in as well as take out orders. After eating the food, we can definitely see why. Overall solid Vietnamese food. We would definitely come back and support. Pho Beef $14- the broth was solid, comes with meatballs and slices of beef, the side veggies were also very fresh and clean. overall the pho beef was solid. 4/5 Fried dumpling $6.50- Juicy fillings and crispy, the dipping sauce was like a soy sauce/vinegar taste. solid 4/5 Pork Egg Rolls $5.50- delicious egg roll! crispy, lots of meat and seasoning was good. 5/5 Shrimp Spring rolls $6 - this was probably the worst spring rolls I have ever eaten. low quality shrimp, tasted bland, mostly veggies and vermicelli, 1 shrimp per half. sauce was just basic hoisin sauce.1/5

Very unassuming but delicious. I got a tofu banh mi to go. The interior is not very inviting - pretty cold and sterile - so I think take out is the better option. My banh mi was so tasty - absolutely LOADED with crispy veggies and flavorful fried tofu marinated in a sweet and spicy sauce. So worth it for only $8!

Pretty solid choice for a quick-and-dirty Vietnamese lunch if you're in the area! I wanted to treat myself after a particularly rough dentist appt and Sun Vietnamese was nearby. The intersection that it's located is infamously terrible but you get into the parking lot easy enough and parking itself is no problem. This is a counter service spot with a little bit of seating but I imagine most of their biz is take out. I wanted to chill so I ordered for dine in. There are some photos on the menu to let you know what you're getting into. I ordered some shrimp spring rolls (you can get them vegetarian if you'd like), the steak and egg roll rice noodle bowl, and a Vietnamese coffee. So because this spot is more on the casual side, they make your iced coffee for you (I'm used to being brought a glass of ice, sweetened condensed milk, and fresh espresso to build fresh.) It was still tasty, strong, and sweet, as it should be, over a ton of crushed ice. The spring rolls were super duper fresh, though the peanut sauce was a little thin for my tastes. The beef in the rice noodle bowl was sooo good - glazed with something sweet and savory and oh so tender. The egg rolls were ultra crispy and tasty and a good contrast to the super fresh veggies and rice noodles. I was missing the hoisen and chili oil on the table that I'm used to. I love adding and mixing to my heart's content. But for a fast-casual option in the area, this totally hit the spot. I'd come back to order to go any day!

Got takeout from here the other day and so glad I did. The service was fast and the restaurant itself is great if you choose to sit inside. I got the chicken bahn mi and the beef/meatball pho. The bahn mi was crispy and packed with stuff! Flavors were so good and the meat inside was amazing. Definitely my favorite bahn mi in Portland so far! The pho was also fantastic. Such a warming and aromatic broth and so many things packed inside. If you're looking for some good pho and bahn mi in town look no further. Highly recommend!

There are not enough good words to say about Sun Vietnamese! Have loved it since the beginning and will continue loving it forever! Best Vietnamese food in Maine, period.

Beef and chicken pho. With eggroll and spring roll

Very welcoming place. Everything was super fresh. The pho was amazing, I loved the spring rolls but I wish they had peanut sauce instead of the hoisin+siracha sauce that they gave us. Overall very worth the visit and you won't disappointed!

I've been here before a couple times and usually get a pho, this time I decided to switch it up and get the banh mi and crab rangoons. The crab rangoons were very good but the banh mi bread was super dry and hard. The services is always fast, you order at the front and sit anywhere and they will bring your food to you. The environment here is very laid back and chill with a normal noise level.

Delicious. Beef pho was very good and a very good portion. I ended up taking some home. Was very affordable as well at $13.

Came across the street that is filled with Vietnamese restaurants and other Asian groceries and wanted to continue my quest of finding my favorite bowl in the greater Portland area. The people working there were friendly and the menu seem to have a lot of popular Vietnamese options. Ordered Beef pho: predominately came with beef, meatballs and flank meat, with bean sprouts and Thai basil, broth was a little bit on the sweet side, but still savory and had good portions Noodle plate had delicious stirfry meat with egg rolls and plenty of veggies. I.e. cabbage, sprouts, carrots, to make a well-rounded meal.

We had Pho delivered with a few appetizers. The broth was delicious. We loved everything except the steamed dumplings.

Best pho I've ever had?? It's so flavorful and the chicken was so tender. Maybe best soup I've ever had honestly.

Slight downgrade but no cause for alarm-- more of a caution…read more They've been one of my favorite restaurants from my first meal here, and they still are, but they've slipped a bit. The chicken is often spectacular but just as often only good, sometimes coming out dry, sloppy, or much saltier (as with some other dishes) than the time before. The service, which was once a hallmark, has tailed off as well. Slightly less experienced, slightly less friendly, and sometimes oblivious or rude. Nothing close to a dealbreaker, but noticeable. -- Wings: They now have four varieties, and I've tried all four. The newest concoction, Makham Glazed Wings (tamarind fish sauce caramel with fried garlic), has great crunch and dazzling, complex flavor. All four are worth trying, so I rotate with each visit. The sauces are top notch. -- Chicken Sandwich: At its best, absolutely elite, from the soft bun to the crunchy shell to the juicy meat to the spicy and velvety additions. But once a little undercooked and once a little dry-- still good; just not great on those occasions. A lunchtime must. -- Cabbage Salad: Still delicious, but hoo boy, salty. -- Crispy Mushroom Waterfall: My wife enjoys it but has noticed significant shrinkage. -- Brussels Sprouts: Lots of flavor here and good crunch. -- Moo Ping (pork skewers): Still delicious, but down from 4 skewers to 3, smaller, and less glaze and spice. Had I not had their off-the-charts-spectacular earlier servings, I might think the same now. Still good, just not as good. Crispy Gai comes through often enough and I'm still coming back. They're still sometimes spectacular. It's just that it's not dependably so and they might have already peaked.

Lucky for me they had a special listed that night of something I had been craving for. A nice slice of Prime rib roast! I knew I was taking a risk since we had just arrived before dinner service was ending but we were greeted by the waitress who said the rib roast was still available. My husband had their Parmesan Crusted Haddock with a pretty decent looking Garden salad and Sweet potato fries. I asked if it was possible to get a piece of prime rib medium rare and they made it happen. Their sides of mashed potatoes and spears of broccoli was very generous and tasted delicious. The rib roast was moist and tender with a nice container filled with Au jus. The dining room area was practically empty so we had the space almost to ourselves. We happily inhaled our food and were given a nice period of privacy. 3 large screen TVs were on in this area so my husband enjoyed watching some games he had missed. The rib roast was just right and was very delicious. The setting is comfortable and a bit dark but the food presented was a real treat. It seems they are the hang out place of many locals and I can see why. You don't expect it but the outdoor seating area also includes a fire pit to enjoy on these cool nights. I can see why many locals and guests return. The wait staff attendant was busy cleaning tables and finishing up for the evening and looked in on us a couple of times only towards the end of our meal. Not as attentive as say other establishments but then again she looked like she was covering jobs of more than one person. Service can be affected in this regard but I'm not going to ding her for doing double duty and working so hard. The bar area looked well stocked and was attended by at least a couple of bar staff. The clientele looked like locals mixed with some who came from the nearby hotels in the area like us. The gatherings looked friendly and just enjoying time together. The outdoor seating area is well lit with a very nice seating area around a fire pit. Their listed specials looked very tempting and I'm just glad I got my hunk of prime rib to enjoy. Nicely done Coppersmith Tavern.
