I ordered way too much food for lunch today. I got the won ton soup, which I thought would be a small appetizer portion, and a banh mi, which I thought would be on the small size. They were both very generous and I could not finish either so I now have leftovers for days lol. The soup was DELICIOUS. I wish I had gotten it by itself. The sandwich was fine, but not great. I prefer a baguette that has a soft inside, but this bread borders on stale. I also got the vietnamese coffee. It was disappointing - although it tastes excellent, the cup was like 70% filled with crushed ice. I still have to give it 4 stars for that soup and excellent service. read more

Haven't been here in many years and stopped by tonight. Everything we ordered were absolutely delicious! Their cold cut ( they call it ham here) was huge and delicious. They pack in the cold cuts here and have not found such a big banh mi nor one that is loaded in filling as here. Their beef pho was flavorful , pipping hot and delicious. Your bowl will have beef steak and slices of beef meatballs here. Absolutely no complaints . We came right when they open and were the 1st customers. The owner greeted us right away, told the owner we wanted to see how the Pho is in Maine compared to California, as well as support local Vietnamese restaurants. As we sat and ate, the restaurant started to get pack with customers dining in as well as take out orders. After eating the food, we can definitely see why. Overall solid Vietnamese food. We would definitely come back and support. Very unassuming but delicious. I got a tofu banh mi to go. The interior is not very inviting - pretty cold and sterile - so I think take out is the better option. Pretty solid choice for a quick-and-dirty Vietnamese lunch if you're in the area! I wanted to treat myself after a particularly rough dentist appt and Sun Vietnamese was nearby. The intersection that it's located is infamously terrible but you get into the parking lot easy enough and parking itself is no problem. This is a counter service spot with a little bit of seating but I imagine most of their biz is take out. I wanted to chill so I ordered for dine in. There are some photos on the menu to let you know what you're getting into. I ordered some shrimp spring rolls (you can get them vegetarian if you'd like), the steak and egg roll rice noodle bowl, and a Vietnamese coffee. So because this spot is more on the casual side, they make your iced coffee for you (I'm used to being brought a glass of ice, sweetened condensed milk, and fresh espresso to build fresh.) It was still tasty, strong, and sweet, as it should be, over a ton of crushed ice. The spring rolls were super duper fresh, though the peanut sauce was a little thin for my tastes. The beef in the rice noodle bowl was sooo good - glazed with something sweet and savory and oh so tender. The egg rolls were ultra crispy and tasty and a good contrast to the super fresh veggies and rice noodles. I was missing the hoisen and chili oil on the table that I'm used to. I'd really like to give this five stars... but I can't do it just yet. I've been in a few times and I held off on writing a review to see if they improved or were having off days, et cetera. I've found that the soup is quite good. This last visit the broth seemed exceptionally tasty. I think the bowl could use with just a slight more noodles, but considering the price it's okay. What I wish they did differently was slicing the beef thinner. The pho joint 'back home' slices the beef razor thin and let me tell you, it makes a difference! The bahn mi are average in my opinion, but you can find better in the city. The staff is really nice and it has never been crowded when I've gone. Service is quick, but it's a bit more fast-food style. You order at the counter and then they bring it to you when it's ready. Long ago, this was a KFC. Then it became a burger/ice cream joint and I find it charming that they haven't bothered to replace the entrance/exit signs that are still adorned with the old ice cream cone logo. read more

I really like Sun Vietnamese Restaurant! My family is from Vietnam so I would have to say my standards are pretty high. My parents also like it here too. Their Vietnamese coffee is delicious and their pho is good! Their pho has a lot of garlic, I love garlic so it's right up my alley. The price is very reasonable too! They are very accommodating. I ordered something to go for 12 people and they put everything in a box so the soups wouldn't spill. It was very thoughtful. 10/10 would recommend and I am definitely going back! read more

Definitely one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Portland, Maine. I was lucky enough to visit Vietnam and spent a bit over two weeks there. Landed in Saigon/Ho Chi Min city and ended in Hanoi so was able to try many different styles of pho. I love the pho at Sun Vietnamese! Excellent every time I visit there - from chicken pho to the loaded meat variety and their portions are very generous and broths so delicious. Also their traditional meat banh mi is excellent - love their baguette! Their rice dishes and various fresh spring rolls are all very good. I'm pretty regular there since their opening and plan on being there for as long as they are open. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Vietnamese food in Portland. Ambiance is average because years ago it was a KFC, but who really cares when the food is so good! Service is always very prompt. read more

At first my impression of this establishment was not going well, little to no parking made worse by the snow, no music or background sound except the sound of the microwave. Beyond that the quality and quantity of their Pho' was great. It was however greasy (?). There was a thin slick of oil on my soup which I have never encountered with Pho before. Only thing missing was the hot chili sauce I needed for the heat to kill this cold. Thankful that has some left over from another meal. We walked in to find a very clean and bright restaurant offering some of our favorite Vietnamese dishes. We ordered for a family of 5. Dumplings, Chicken curry, chicken pho, shrimp vermicelli. We were blown away at the very first bites. We've tried many Vietnamese restaurants in New England and this is now our favorite. Not sure if I would call this a vietnamese restaurant so much more than an asian restaurant. First, of all their service is great, friendly and helpful. Secondly, their prices aren't terrible. As for the menu -- it literally has a big variety of asian fare. Lo mein, to stir fry, to pho, to banh mi, to fried rice, to pad thai. Thai tea: delicious. Pho: not very...pho-y? They only have beef and chicken options, the beef is not served raw, so it ends up a little tough and overcooked by the time you eat it. The broth was VERY garlic-y, not that this was a bad thing, it was actually delicious, but in my mind it wasn't that simply fragrant beefy broth I was expecting in my head. Lemongrass beef stir fry: such good lemongrass flavor, would order again. They kind of skim on the beef and there's way more veg, but it was honestly enough to add more protein to and make into another stir fry the next day so I'm not complaining. Chicken wings: uhm honestly, this WON the meal for me, so crunchy on the outside and not overcooked. delicious. the wings are simply seasoned and come with the sweet and sour dipping sauce. would order again like right now.
