Jackfruit smoothie was a flavor I had never tried before, but really enjoyed the tropical mix without too much extra artificial taste. Loved my pho, with classic broth, rare steak on the side, tasty beef balls, and the extra plate of things to throw in to my hearts content. Beef stew was typically Vietnamese style, but the carrots were slightly undercooked. Overall, would definitely try more things here if I had the time. I also would not miss G1- The Ga Xao Cai Ro - the stir fried chicken with Chinese broccoli. So so good. There are many other wonderful menu items, but these are definitely my top 2. My wife and I stopped here for a bowl of pho on a snowy day. We made our decision based solely on the reviews of fellow Yelpers. Unfortunately, our experience was not as positive as others have experienced. Upon entering the place, which was completely empty at lunch on a weekend, we were greeted by a nice young man. After exchanging pleasantries, he informed us that he was sick..... we should have taken that as a clue. The good news: There was a good selection of pho offerings and the bowls served to us were good.... certainly above average. The cons: The server was not the only one with a cold. I've been to Than Than 2 a few times over the years, always enjoyed it. But today I found an old rotten cigarette butt IN MY FOOD! I was so freaked out I did not take a photo, I just told the server and asked to speak to the manager, who apparently wasn't there at the time. We live in the neighborhood and get dinner across the street at Saigon at least once a week (which is always amazing). My wife wanted pho on a Wednesday, when Saigon is closed, so we tried this place. Was hopeful and really wanted to like it. The interior is super odd, cold, and generally unpleasant. The guy who took my order was very nice, but kept wiping his runny nose with his fingers while he talked to me. Food came out relatively quickly. Order pho and lomein with tofu and bean sprouts to go. Lomein was inedible, and not lomein (or at least what I was expecting when I ordered lomein). Dripping in oil and tasted like expired fish sauce...gag. Literally took one bite and spit it out. Pho broth was luke warm so I had to heat everything up in a pot when it didn't "cook" the rare beef. "Worst pho I've had" - my wife. Would have loved to like this place...but won't be going back. Do yourself a favor and just hit up Saigon (and skip Vietnamese on weds when they're closed). read more

Moving to Portland from Philadelphia, it's been a challenge to find a good Vietnamese restaurant. We tried one in Biddeford that was a major disappointment. Next, we had Pho at a place in Westbrook that came fairly-highly rated. It was sub-par. So, we arrived at Thanh Thanh 2 with low expectations. We were, however, very pleasantly surprised. We had three things: spring rolls, egg rolls and Pho with flank steak and beef tendon. Both rolls acquitted themselves well, although the accompanying dipping sauces were lacking. The sauce for the spring rolls was not homemade--a basic, out-of-the-jar peanut sauce. The one for the egg rolls looked to be made from scratch, but was relatively bland, and did little to complement the roll. The star was the Pho. Although not the best we've ever had, it was very good. The broth was light, but full of flavor with a touch of sweetness. One criticism: I wish they had brought rare flank to the table, so that we could add it to the piping hot broth. My boyfriend had a Vietnamese coffee, which was tasty, but not served at the table with a phin (drip coffee maker). Overall, it was enjoyable and we won't hesitate to return! read more

Thanh Thanh 2 is wonderful. I grew up in Portland, and so I had certainly been a few times before moving out of state, but anytime myself or both me and my girlfriend are back visiting Maine, we have to come here at least once or twice. Their broth is unbelievably beefy, smooth, and flavorful without being too salty, and the use of fresh bun instead of dried is a real plus. Pretty good sizes on the meat servings as well. And don't forget the amazing shakes, made with fresh fruit! It's better quality Vietnamese food than I can usually find in and around the NYC area, which is saying a lot! Portland really has a gem of a restaurant with this place, and how could I forget to mention how kind and accommodating the owner and family are? We love Thanh Thanh 2 so much that we came here 4 of the 6 days we were in town AND bought 3 quarts of beef broth to bring all the way back to NY!! The pho here is as good as it gets. You can tell from the lack of grainy, powdery rice residue (that's usually found on dried noodles) and the bounce of the noodle that they use fresh noodles only. They are also very generous with the meat and the broth is honestly the best I've ever had. Will be coming back every time I'm in town and buying more broth to-go!! Oh also their shakes are spot on! With other options around the area for some good and fresh vietnamese cuisine, Tanh Tanh 2 is a place that you need to give a try. This location is located catty-corner to Dominos pizza on Forest Avenue which impedes parking during the times that people are trying to get some dinner and diving into the pizza joint right next door. So, some of the best times to try parking in the small 5-6 spot lot would be around 7pm or so. I have always been a fan of the vietnamese soup called Pho (like I have to tell foodies about this delicacy) and Tanh Tanh definitely delivers in this area with a very wide range of different options in the noodle soup. You can go with options that have all meat products with flank steak or a delicious and spicy vegetarian style Pho. They actually have 14 different styles of Pho which is probably the most that I have seen in any of the local vietnamese restaurants. The service is always great here where they are attentive and are ready and willing to help you and meet your needs making it easier for a first timer coming in to dive into the world of Pho ... which you should also be asking yourself, "Self, why have I never tried this thin noodled soup before?" One of the drawbacks of this establishment is that they are not very nice to look at. The decor is plain and a little dirty with a large sized fish tank in the middle of the dining area that is actually half full with water most of the time. (poor fishies need some room to roam) The restaurant also has a full bar and the price points here are really not all that bad. The appetizers are fresh and tasty but there is not a lot that you can do wrong with some great oriental appetizers. After the week of boiling temps mid 90s, the sudden cold of below 60 made for the need of hot noodle soup. The pho #1 definitely hit the spot. Warmed me up immediately. Soup was good and did not make you extremely thirsty like some others do. I would stay away from the pad thai. It was a gelatinous mound of noodles that was a bit heavy on the peanut sauce. If you want pho, this is definitely one of the better places. You might want to bring something to wipe the table with as mine was a bit sticky. When pulling up to Thanh Thanh's the only thing I wanted or ever cared to really look at on the menu was the Pho. I was cold. The wind had been cutting into me and I had just seen a good albeit a crazy movie ("Birdman", really go see it). Walking in I noticed that there was no one here. Granted at 4 on a Sunday, Portland really does seem to close down a lot. I tried to flip through my menu all of the pages were stuck together ( semi gross) but found the Pho. All the glorious menu items of rare beef, beef tenderloin, meatballs, and brisket. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet which was amazing. I just ordered the small bowl and it was the perfect size. You are still going to get a ton of food with the small but if you are in need to be gluttonous medium and large are also some options. We also ordered the dumplings. There were panned fried and crispy. The plum sauce a great addition. Highly recommend. The prices have increased slightly but they still provide excellent food. Cold winter nights in Portland means pho for me. As you you I am on the hunt for the best pho in southern Maine and I think I might have found it. We discovered this by accident when we had ventured to Saigon across the street which ended up being very disappointing since they turned us away. I literally saw the sign for Thanh Thann 2 by chance as they are tucked in next to a Dominos. We ordered the spring rolls and the Pho, the bowls are giant and very tasty with fresh toppings, thai basil, jalapeño lime and sprouts. Really enjoyed the broth super nuanced bone broth flavor and the most authentic I have tasted in Maine. I ordered a medium bowl of Pho with beef and it was gigantic, but I was starving. There was also a plate of fresh items to add to the broth including basil, bean sprouts, lime slices and jalapeno. The broth itself was rich and flavorful. I'm pretty sure mine was loaded with ginger because it a slightly sweet aftertaste that I really enjoyed. I ripped up a ton of basil and tossed it in. I'm pretty sure I inhaled most of it until I realized that my eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach and couldn't finish the whole bowl. I really wanted to though. It was just that tasty. We also ordered their dumplings which were some of the best I've had and I consider myself a dumpling expert. They were extra crispy on the outside and stuffed fill of ground pork. The dumpling to filling ratio was pretty spot on. Sometimes I've had them where the dumpling dough is so thick that it's all you taste. Not so in this case. I have dined at Thanh Thanh at least 7 times in the last 6 months and the pho has been fairly consistent. If you look around the restaurant, the pho is what most of the regulars order. It's the only thing I order when I go and the medium is just the right size. The broth is always beefy and complex--the charred ginger and star anise flavors make it the best pho broth I have tasted in Portland. This is just as good as pho from Los Angeles or Orange County, CA. The noodles always come out slighty al dente/chewy. My only gripes about the place are 1) sometimes the broth does not come out hot 2) the plate of herbs is missing sawtooth herb. The service can also be a little slow at times. read more
