As the economy gets tighter, I wouldn't waste hard earned money on a restaurant that will probably make you ill and will most definitely be disappointing in some way. I'm not sure who is passing out awards, but they clearly haven't had real Thai food. They were super busy so We had our hopes up. Overall, this food lacked flavor. My husband had 4 level spice as "adventurous" and even I could eat it. I had the chicken lo mein and it really needed more sauce and flavor. No soy sauce packets in the take out and boy did it need it. I could have also used some chile oil to add some heat. I just can't understand why this place has so many awards. Oh boy, this was disappointing! Last night we ordered delivery from here to our hotel. We ordered the fried combo appetizer, the thai beef salad and the scallop pad-thai. The fried combo platter was just dull, greasy and flavorless. Without the dipping sauces it would have been almost inedible. The Pad-Thai was also lacking flavor and didn't have many scallops in it. The worst though was the thai beef salad! The beef had some flavor, but the salad itself was a joke! There was half a head of romaine at the bottom of the tub, saturated in this greasy sauce, along with some raw sliced red bell pepper. We asked for utensils in our order too which they failed to provide. Since we are visiting and staying at a hotel we had to run out to the store to get cutlery before we could eat it. My wife and I stopped here after a long day to avoid having to cook dinner at home. The fried rice as recommended by their staff was fantastic. We LOVE Veranda Thai- it has quickly become our go-to Thai to order since the pandemic began. We especially love the amount of pad thai you get compared to others restaurants' portions. They include a lemon wedge instead of a lime wedge with the pad thai, but it's fine. Their crab rangoons are 100% recommended as well. I stopped here this weekend to bring home food for supper and I have to admit I was personally disappointed. I admit I have not eaten from this establishment prior to this, so certainly I will give them another chance! However a common the fool I brought home for supper I found disappointing. Neither my wife nor I found the chicken wings appetizer or the Pan fried dumplings appetizer all that good. The quality of chicken felt weak to me although they were perfectly fried crispy. The dumplings felt under filled because the interior was easily sliding around inside the wanton. And the quality of both the wanton end it's filling seemed lower end and lacking flavor. My wife got the medium spice chicken drunken noodle and I got the lo mein with beef. I got mine with very little spice, but apparently that also meant very little flavor. The noodles work hooked and the beef was relatively tender, but the overall plate felt like eating naked linguine. I offered my wife a bite to see if perhaps she would enjoy it so it would not go to waste, and she felt basically the same. So unfortunately no one ended up eating this. I am holding out hope for a better experience next visit. read more

The pad Thai is delicious. I love the lunch special, it comes with a small appetizer (crab rangoon or egg roll usually), a small soup (delicious hot and sour or sometimes egg drop), and your entree. I usually get the pad Thai or the pad see ew and both are quite tasty. The pad Thai is a great combo of sweet and hot and spicy. Lots of peanuts and scallions. A little on the pricey end but the portions are huge and the service is efficient. One of my go-to takeout places in Portland. read more

I used to LOVE Veranda Thai! They were my favorite stop for soups, drunken noodle, house fried rice and fresh spring rolls. Then, slowly, sometime starting in September, things started to slip. Their wonton soup broth, which was legendary, started tasting like hot water with a scant teaspoon of bouillon. I had always asked for extra wontons in my soup, for a reasonable add on price, then one night realized, they were charging me $1 per extra wonton! The fresh spring rolls came several times with old turned lettuce AND the serving size of other dishes seems to have been reduced by about 25%. I have tried so many times and given them so many chances in the past few months, but sadly, I am done. They are just not the same Veranda Thai I used to know. It has come time for me to accept this and move on. I cannot recommend Veranda Thai any more. I say that with a heavy heart. read more

I got take-out last week from Veranda Thai Cuisine; I often come here for take-out and get their Pad Thai with three stars; it is always great. This time I decided to have another one of my favorites, Massaman Curry. It was delicious, creamy, spicy, and full of potato, pineapple, green bell pepper, and chicken, with a side of white rice. I went here with my son. I had the Tom Kar soup with chicken to start and it was delicious. It had plenty of thinly sliced chicken, veggies and a wonderful coconut broth. The crab rangoons were good but nothing special. One entree could easily feed 2 people. I had the veggie pad thai and my kid had red curry with pork and both dishes were really good. When you first enter this establishment, you need to go through the newly built doorway sitting right across the street from the Veranda Noodle Bar and right next to Howie's Pub. We came here when the weather was frigid and we needed a warm pick-me-up!! We started off with a complimentary soup that was warm and had a little kick but other than that was pretty sub par lacking in flavor and depth in the soup that was more broth than anything else. We had a dumpling appetizer that was both fresh and delicious. They were not your typical fried dumpling but of course the much more healthy steamed dumpling with a delicious soy sauce to drizzle over the top. For the main course we dove into the delicious Pad Thai that was both fresh and perfect with the crunch of the bean sprouts that they layer in with the dish. My friend got his with some extra spice and it had kick for days that made his eyes water but he said it never lost the flavor (which is key) The service was great and prompt. Give this little "hole in the wall" restaurant a chance if you want some good food .. you wont be dissapointed. read more

This is definitely the best Thai food around Maine period, I drove all the way from Biddeford Maine just to have good authentic Thai food. The second I walked in their was a lot of people bragging about how good this places is making comments such as " this is the best drunken noodles dish I have ever had " it's set up nicely with matching plate and silverware with extremely clean table cloths :) the bathrooms was nice clean and fresh scented their is lots of beautiful decorations around and a beautiful deck out side !! Parking can always be hit or miss. Small dining area, but singles or two can usually get served quickly. Wine and beer only for bar service, but a decent selection of both. I had the Thai wings for an appetizer. They were deep fried with an extra crunchy finish. I always get extra crisp wings, but these were a bit over the top on the crunch meter. The insides were moist and flavorful, however, so all way not lost. If I ordered again, I'd ask for a bit less crispy if possible. The shrimp and scallop drunkin noodle was excellent. I'm a drunkin noodle junkie, and this was one of my best. The noodles were silky and delicious. Lots of seafood, and the sauce was nicely spiced. I really enjoyed it. Overall, service was very quick and friendly. 3 1/2 to 4 stars.....I will try their duck next to see if they pull that off well. read more

The famous Pad Thai was nothing but a huge glob of over cooked noodles in a gloopy sauce. I tried a few more dishes, all of which were equally as bland and without much effort. I have traveled throughout Asia, including Thailand, and much of this would be embarrassing to a cook in that country. Perhaps, because it was a Monday, they were using up old food from the weekend, but that's still no excuse. Moreover, the main courses started coming out before we were done with our appetizers, which again is just a lazy way of running a kitchen. Two stars at best. I won't be back. read more

Always a reliable choice! First off, they have parking! That is a breath of fresh air in Portland. It's just a hop, skip and a jump off of 295, so one cannot complain about the distance from the usual downtown scene. I'm a fan of traditional thai noodle dishes and I've found this place to be reasonably priced. The menu is a little difficult to navigate if one has never been to a noodle bar, but there are also stir fry options if you're not into slurping down your chow. I have the sweet basil stir fry with tofu and chicken. It was a little overly sauced but the veggies were nice and crisp. My favorite dish, drunken noodle tofu, is always quite good but quite never the same twice. Sometimes almost no vegetables. Sometimes pineapple. The quality of the food is always very good. This place really deserves being called a hole in the wall because of the dilapidated building its in, but the food is consistently great, from my experience. My favorite dish here is shrimp with spicy lemongrass sauce. The portions are huge, and my dish came with ten large shrimp in the dish. I order my spice level at 3, which the restaurant calls "adventurous." I like spicy food and the heat level of 3 is just about right for my taste. I think level 4, which is called "native," would likely cause me more scalp sweat than I'd find comfortable. The tom yum soup here is also very good and full of shrimp, mushrooms, and tomatoes, and has great flavor. I find that if I order it as an appetizer, it fills me up to the point that I wish I hadn't also ordered one of their large portion main dishes, yet to come. I eat at this restaurant regularly, as well as at its sister Vietnamese restaurant across the street, and have no problem recommending both to people. There is one young woman working at Veranda Thai who was handling all in-house diners, taking phone orders, and handing out takeout to those coming in to pick it up, and she is simply amazing. read more

I have been here twice. Both times I have had their drunken noodles once to go and once at the restaurant. I got it regular but there are I believe 5 levels of spice for the more daring. For whatever the reason, the food tasted 10x better at the restaurant. Maybe it's because I got it with chicken and not tofu? Anyways, it completely swayed my opinion in a positive direction. The lunch special is great as you get soup and a small appetizer with your meal which were both very good for around $11. The place is small with not a large amount of seating and my party of 5 felt slightly cramped in the outdoor section. The service was good, not great but the food was out much faster than anticipated which is always a pleasant surprise. So on everywhere I look it says they are open till 10:30, I ordered a tofu fried rice and received a tofu pad Thai (take out) I live only a couple minutes away so as soon as I noticed I tried to continuously call from 9:30-10pm and decided to drive there and they had just shut off the lights. So not only did they close much earlier (because you have to clean and shut down the kitchen) they purposely ignored all my calls.
