Talk about amazing flavor and high quality ingredients. The staff was super helpful and extremely kind. We tried numerous dishes and every dish was delicious and a reasonable price. Must try dish are the crab ragoons if that is a staple dish you get at every Chinese takeout spot. Every dish was packed with explosive flavor, made you say "wow" after every bite and was sad once finished. Even tried sake for the first time and will be having it again. Stopped by Mi Sen on a colder fall day and had a really solid experience. The wait staff was pretty helpful -- we were a bit confused entering the restaurant, but eventually got a seat! The ambience was peaceful and welcoming, we felt like we were at rest. The food hit the spot but seemed to lack some flavor. My partner and I came here for my birthday dinner and were very happy with our experience. Being right downtown, it's a popular spot, so I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. We were there on the earlier side at 6pm, and people were already being told there was 25-30 minute wait for a table (not sure if that was because there was a sold out show at the State Theatre down the street, but still busy!). The host was very friendly and saw us to our table right away. He was very sweet when he learned it was my birthday and brought us a free dessert without making a spectacle out of it. A review of our food: Chive Cake: perfectly fried on the outside and the right amount of creamy and savory on the inside. Great size for an appetizer. Fried Rice with veggies: Standard fare done well. Pad See Eww with veggies: My favorite Thai dish done very well. Not overly sweet, broccoli wasn't mushy or toothsome, and the noodles were great. Green Curry: Fresh and balanced flavors with the right amount of heat. Sticky Rice dessert: We ate it all but it was too salty. I was so impressed with our meal at Mi Sen! We were able to be seated right away on a Friday as it wasn't super busy. We shared the shrimp appetizer special, drunken noodles, pork panang curry, ba mee ped with duck, and mango sticky rice for dessert. Everything was very delicious and I appreciated being able to customize the spice! We went for 2 which was a good level for us white people. I may have accidentally ordered the wrong protein for the drunken noodles but we were able to get our correct order super quick. Our service was great! Everything came out hot and fresh. When the weather starts to turn cool, I start craving big bowls of Asian noodle soup! I went or Mi Sen on a Thursday evening. It was my first time so I asked the server which soup he recommends, and said I was in the mood for Ramen. He said they don't have Ramen, but they do have a similar noodle, and that noodle could be used in any of the soups. I order the Num Deung, a rich chicken and pork broth, with choice of meat (I got the duck), green beans, cilantro, and scallions. The broth had a great balance of salty and sweet, the veggies were very fresh (slightly cooked, still crunchy), and the noodles were similar to ramen, perfectly cooked, perfectly chewy. We stopped in here because it was on the way to a tour we were doing nearby and it was crazy rainy so something warm and soup like sounded like the right thing. I'm quite glad we did, everything was delicious! Service was prompt and very pleasant. The place is nicely decorated inside. I was there for lunch but I could imagine it would also make a nice cozy dinner venue. I had the lunch special which was very reasonably priced which included an appetizer and an entree. The chive pancakes were amazing!! Also the tom yum soup was amazing flavorful and really hit the spot. Found this small Thai restaurant on a pitstop to Acadia National Park. Right in downtown Portland, this was a great spot if you want some quick but tasty Thai food! We both got the lunch special that comes with an appetizer and an entree. We got the drunken noodles with the crispy fried tofu and the Num Daeng lunch special with chive pancakes. The Drunken Noodle was my favorite dish. Was perfectly spiced and seasoned. I went with a 3 spice level instead of the normal 2 and thought it was perfect. The Num Daeng was a delicious mix of salty and sweet and was refreshing light even while being a hot soup on a summer day. Would have liked it just a little more flavorful but overall a great experience. As for the appetizer, I would recommend the chive pancakes over the fried tofu. The tofu needed more flavor, was not seasoned at all. read more

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats a delicious meal from Mi Sen. They've been our go-to takeout order for the last seven years we've been living in Portland, so much so that we order from them at least 4-5 times a month. Always delicious, always incredibly fast delivery, and of the nearly hundred times we've ordered, we've only ever had a single issue (which was rectified very quickly and not a huge deal to begin with). Their food is even better in the restaurant, but parking in that area can be a bit difficult on the weekends, so delivery is our preferred method. Whenever we have family or friends visiting the city, our immediate recommendation is Mi Sen and we've never heard anything but glowing praise from them afterwards. Not much else I can say other than this is a necessary and essential restaurant to the city, and I hope they stick around for many, many more years to come. Final tip: order the Thai fries. I enjoyed everything in my meal, but all the items I ordered had significant flaws. So how to review this? First of all, service was super friendly and super quick. I barely ordered before I had my drink, and then my appetizer and entree arrived at about the same time a couple minutes later. That's amazing. I ordered a margarita which was good, and it must have been alcoholic because I walked away more than buzzed. But it looked and tasted like lemonade. I got the chive cake which was delicious. However, after having some of my spicy noodle entree, I had more of the chive cake, and found the dipping sauce to be far too sweet. Saccharine. And too thick. And my entree was the dry noodles. I chose the yellow egg noodles, which is pretty much what I always choose for a noodle or soup dish when given the option, and tofu. It was excellent. Tofu cooked perfectly, noodles sumptuous, and like this dusting of crumbled/ground peanuts that I thought really made it perfect. But diner beware, this is a SPICY dish. And I feel like the menu didn't really make that as clear as it should have. I loved it, it was a good spicy, rich and flavorful. But my customer service brain says tell the people it's a SPICY dish, please. read more

We went to Mi Sen this weekend before a show at the State (conveniently across the street) and had an excellent experience. We went with a friend who had never had thai before so it could have gone off the rails really quickly, but the Food and the Service were so good and made him a believer. I got the ginger noodles which I LOVED something about that sauce was so subtle but flavorful. YUM. My husband and his friend got pad thai which he loved and fried rice and really enjoyed that as well. Kenny (i think) was our server and was so nice and great at explaining everything and was fast and pleasant even though the place was packed (they do take reservations and i recommend that if theres something going on in the theater!). I'll be excited to try some of their noodle soups next time I'm back! read more

Last night I got their pad Thai for the first time - I don't know how I have lived in Portland this long without it. It is SO. DAMN. GOOD. The flavor they get out of their sauce is so good. The tofu is fried to perfection. The sprouts are super fresh. The noodles are smaller than I'm used to and I LOVED IT. It's just absolutely amazing and honestly my new favorite in town. As always, stellar service. It's super easy to order online, and the food is almost always ready within 20 minutes. They place it right on a little shelf for you to easily grab, and are happy to help you if you have any questions. They always include chopsticks - thank you!! A cute, well decorated Thai eatery near the main downtown streets of Portland ME. I was not expecting to get delicious Asian food on this NE coast trip but boy was I surprised. Stopping in Portland before heading up to Acadia, we needed to grab an afternoon bite and found that Mi Sen was just opening at 4:30. Luckily we came across a happy hour from 430-7 on Mondays and Tuesdays, which allowed us to explore its extensive appetizer menu. The fried taro bites were crispy, laced with peanuts, and paired perfectly with the sweet/sour sauce topped with crushed peanuts. The chive cakes were sadly not as tasty as I expected. The chives were encompassed in a soft doughy texture and the flavors were buried, this would have resulted in a 4 star review but wow I was surprised at the delicious taste of the Tom Yum noodle. They said the base is 2/5 star spiciness which was actually the perfect amount of spice to pair with the sour curry soup. Extremely delicious and went beyond my expectations. The final surprise was that they had a fantastic mango sticky rice and it was truly served with a sweet coconut drizzle over refreshing mango slices and warm sticky rice. The flavor profiles in this Thai place are authentic and deep. The tomyam soups are must try items. Add steamed wantons and glass noodles to make it a meal. The crispy duck pad Thai was exceptional. I like the pad Thai a lot which was not too sweet--drizzle on lime juice and sriracha to make it punchy. I am looking forward to when we can dine in as the textures would be spot on. After eating so much fresh Maine seafood, we just wanted some comforting asian food in downtown Portland. Mi Sen was the perfect choice which we made based on Yelp reviews. Tip: Make a reservation on their website. I was able to make a reservation just 15 minutes in advance. There's so many Thai dishes to choose from, and the prices are such a steal especially for the quality. For every noodle dish, you can sub your noodles for a different noodle type if you want. The servers were so friendly/personal and even gave us a complimentary second hot honey lemon tea. We left so so satisfied and with some leftovers. Wanted Thai food and Mi Sen was a short walk from where we were staying. The menu looked solid so we decided to give it a try. Walking in the place looked pretty basic. Nice decor, but none of the ornate Thai pictures and other things that you often see. Sitting down, the staff was very friendly, answering questions about the menu. We ordered a mix of soups, curry, and noodle dishes. Generally everyone likes it spicy so the dishes were ordered 5 star. The dishes came out with very little spice. They had decent flavor, but the heat was pretty nonexistent. Portion sizes were good. They were enough for one person to finish. This could become my favorite place in Portland. Everything we tasted was terrific, had good sized portions, and was very reasonably priced. The flavors of our noodle dishes were outstanding, and there were plenty of choices. Next time we want to try the soups. Staff were attentive and helpful. You pick your noodle style (examples on the wall) for the dish you choose. They'll customize spiciness as well - if you like spicy, get brave, the medium wasn't even close:-). They have a couple of standout dishes including the beef khao soi. It's super rich and a little sweet for my taste, but the texture and flavors for this dish are standout. Everything on the lunch special menu sounded so good so I will definitely come back for more! We tried the chive cake and radish cake for apps. The chive cake was sooo good! I've never had anything like it, perfect light crispy fried outside and moist chive flavor explosion inside! Radish cake tasted like the chinese turnip cake which was just okay. I think it would have tasted better if was pan fried for some texture. I got the drunken noodle which was delicious! A good amount of heat and great flavor! What a great Thai restaurant in Portland. The servers are very nice. The dishes are reasonably priced and the lunch deal is a steal! ($17.95 for an appetizer and entree). I got the chive cake which was cooked perfectly. It was crispy on the outside and hot inside. The chili sweet soy sauce paired well with the herby aroma of the chives and made for a great starter. For the entree, I got the chicken pad thai. It was a huge portion so you will definitely leave this place full. The pad thai was packed with flavor and was a savory delight.
