Sundance has been my favorite breakfast place since trying their restaurant in Cascade eight years ago. Since then I've enjoyed that one and their location in downtown Grand Rapids. We had to order 4 drinks at once just to make sure we had some for a bit considering the bartender walked by so many times without acknowledging us. Then he dropped the top to the pineapple juice on the floor straight up picked it up and put it right back on top of the pineapple juice container. I work in the city and this place used to be on our regular lunch circuit. Here's why we're done with it: 1. Most of what's worth eating here is their breakfast menu, and they now only serve a handful of breakfast items after 11am. This was the biggest reason we used to go here. It's especially problematic for those of us limiting carbs or on vegetarian diets. 2. The service is incredibly lackluster. Last time we came here, they got my order wrong and all my coworkers were finished eating by the time my actual order came out (about 30 minutes!). I had to ask for a to-go box immediately, box it up myself, and eat it at the office. They comped the meal but still charged me $2.50 for a diet coke. Today when we came in we'd ordered beverages by the time we realized they no longer served breakfast. Since there's nothing I wanted to eat on the lunch/dinner menu, I decided to go elsewhere. Guess what? They still charged me $2.50 for the half glass of diet coke I drank. It's a nice location, and convenient to my work. While we definitely enjoyed coming here regularly in the past, we won't be back - at all. It may be the least well-managed restaurant in the city center. read more

Food is what you'd expect from a typical American breakfast/bar place with a few southwest inspired dishes. Nothing to write home about. - Prickly Pear Lemonade: Nice refreshing drink for the hot summer weather. Similar to your typical lemonade but with a hint of something different and prickly pear pink. - French Toast Platter: Four good sized pieces of cinnamon swirl French toast, 2 eggs cooked to order, 3 slices of crispy bacon, and syrup on the side so it doesn't make everything soggy. Good sized portions - Baja Pork Tacos: 3 pork tacos with a side of beans and rice. The pork was well done, nice and juicy with a hint of flavor. Unfortunately the slaw was not able to carry is weight and was very tasteless. It's like ordering a Cesar salad and getting a head of iceberg lettuce. The taco together ended up being pretty bland. I came here with my friend and it was delicious! I got the shrimp and avocado salad with the dressing on the side. She got the fish tacos. I thought the salad was great. Next time I want to see if they can grill the shrimp instead of frying it. My friend thought the tacos were fine, just a little bland. The service was great and it wasn't too busy. A friend and I went to Sundance for breakfast recently and both ordered the pancake platter. My friend had asked for no bacon due to a food allergy and they sent the pancakes out with the bacon so she sent it back. They never brought her another plate. I was done eating and she still hadn't gotten her food. The server didn't come check on us once and the manager sided with the server. They never gave her a meal and never apologized about the situation. When you mess up someone's food it should be your priority to get them another plate as soon as possible. Let me start by saying my husband is in the ANG stationed in Grand Rapids. We spend ALOT of time there. Sundance is a little gem we discovered a few years ago, and we try to go at least once everytime we are in town. We went there on Friday morning March 8, 2024 with my daughter and her boyfriend. We arrived at about 10:10am. Stood at the door waiting to be seated for over 10 minutes, several servers and bartenders looked at us and went on their way none of them acknowledging us. Finally after 10 minutes my husband went up to the bar to ask if we were supposed to seat ourselves, and a VERY rude server who was just standing around talking told him that there was a hostess but she was very busy and he would have to wait. There were about 6 tables in the whole place with people at them. About 10 minutes later a hostess came up and took us to our seats. Server was quick only taking about 2 minutes to get our drink order. Which FYI they no longer have fresh squeezed juice. She came back quickly with our drinks to take our order, we all ordered the pancake platters (pancakes,bacon,and eggs.) Except my husband ordered corn beef hash, and my daughter go a giant cinnamon roll. This was about 10:30 at this point. About a half an hour later the server came up and told my husband that they were out of corn beef hash. Which is about 5 things on the menu. She proceeded to tell him that they have been out all week. (Should have said that from the beginning) so he ordered the pancake platter also. Another half hour (11:35) went by and they finally brought our food out. I asked for crispy bacon because I don't like it limp. They forgot my sons syrup, my back was BURNT I mean BLACK. My daughters cinnamon roll was easily half the size it Normally is, and was dry, with some sort of watery glaze on the plate for it. Her favorite part was the cream cheese icing which them menu sid it was. Pancakes were doughy and undercooked. My daughter asked the server about the frosting on the cinnamon roll and she said that the chef was now making his own it was no longer cream cheese, to which my daughter stated that it still says cream cheese on the menu, the server promptly rolled her eyes and said oh well it isn't anymore, and walked away. After 10 minutes of our server walking by and not stopping my husband went up to the bar to ask for a manager, I asked again another server after 10 more minutes. Finally about noon the manager came out and we told her about the issues, no one took more then 2 bites of their food. The manager smelled like she had been hot boxing on her car for an hour, honestly the smell was making me sick to my stomach. She took off some of our food and never even offered an apology. So at 12:30 after being there 2 1/2 hours we had to pay $50 for food no one ate and had to go somewhere else and actually eat. I will NEVER return and will not recommend to any of our friends. The place has really gone downhill. read more

Nice breakfast and service. Dogs are allowed on the patio and the wait staff will even bring out a water bowl for your furry companion. The menu was so large my party had a hard time choosing our meals between the breakfast and lunch menus. The giant cinnamon roll was SO GIANT, good for sharing. Plenty of breakfast items- I went with my usual trip breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast and bacon. It came with a fruit cup as well. I tried the German wheat beer on tap, along with (their take on) a Rueben, and I was happy with both. Staff were cheerful, courteous, and quick to provide service. This restaurant has some of the worst service I've ever personally experienced. On one occasion, upon going out to brunch with my family, they served us our food without giving us silverware. We then sat for over ten minutes waiting, looking at our food. There were also lengthy waiting times between food & checks. After deciding to give it another shot, we went for an early dinner to avoid crowds, hoping for a better service. However, we didn't receive our chips & salsa appetizer (happy hour*) until after getting our entrees. I ordered a margarita that was a part of the happy hour our waitress said was happening (even though it was Sunday) only to receive a mimosa and be told that happy hour is not on the weekends like she thought. She did credit the mimosa, which was kind. We then waited about 15-20 more minutes for a check after finishing our meal. You could say that they were just busy the first time, and you could make the argument that maybe the waitress was new was new for the second, but either way it's still two significantly disappointing dining experiences. I definitely won't be eating here again any time soon. I will say though that the servers are very kind, which earned them 1 out of the 2 stars. read more

A pretty decent brunch spot with some interesting dishes to try. We started with their signature brunch drinks...a pomegranate mimosa for her and the BLT Bloody Mary for me. Mine looked more like a salad with a big beautiful leaf of romaine jutting out the top and a nice ripe tomato slice and piece of crispy bacon in it, served alongside some sourdough toast and a little cup of mayo...giving the full BLT effect. The pomegranate mimosa was a little more to my liking but BLTBM if you really love Bloody Marys. For the dish I had the crab eggs bennie which was lump crab from what I could tell but there was just a little shell left in it which made it a little unpleasant. My girl had a skillet and really liked the cook on the eggs and the pillowy home fries they serve with it. Their jelly might be homemade too...it was thinner and better than a typical Smuckers strawberry. I think this place might be a chain since we passed another on the way back to Detroit but they do a really nice job all the same. The bar area itself looked nice and service was solid while prices are mostly reasonable - 3.5 stars. read more

We arrived on a sunday with a large party and were given an hour wait. A long wait for brunch on a sunday is understandable. What is not understandable is how, after an hour and ten minutes, we were told there were still 3 large parties ahead of us and another 40 minute wait. There was also a two year old in our party. If you can't seat people, say so. If you don't have staff to serve anyone, be honest. Having customers wait an hour just to tell them to go ahead and wait another hour - that's complete disregard and lack of appreciation for the customers that make your business possible. It came with a side of wheat toast and homemade strawberry jelly. It was so delicious, the jalapeños were spicy which gave it just enough kick. So yummy!! My fiends ordered the Albuquerque omelette and they enjoyed it and would definitely order it again. So they come out with no onion, no salsa, and most insultingly on 4 silver dollar sized single tortillas. These aren't street tacos, they're a tidbit of an appetizer! I went to Sundance two weeks ago, both for dinner & the following AM breakfast. They had been recommended both by my Uber driver from the Gerald R Ford airport but as well as the concierge at the Hyatt across the street (which is also fabulous). I was on my way to #BeaverIslandRetreat a few hours north of GR and this was my overnight on the way from California. I had not been inside of a restaurant in 7 months. But... This place was incredible. And they followed all proper social distancing protocols inside. The meals were Amazing (as if I could eat that much food ;-D). But most importantly... The staff... The manager for the evening (I'm guessing) was very attentive as well as all of the waiters for both meals. I was complimented on my Mando mask (It Is The Way :-). But as well... a Special Shout Out to my waiter for dinner, Kyle, who was incredible while I was feeling very awkward eating inside. All my best to Sundance. What rock did these two employees slither out from under this Friday night? No one else in the restaurant which should've been our first red flag, but we were met with such attitude by a young millennial and equally unhappy older bartender. As a first time visitor to Grand Rapids this put a damper on our first evening on what was otherwise a very enjoyable day. I was already leaving a smaller tip than I usually would but i asked the young girl if I could get a cup if hot water to go...she said she wasn't affiliated with the hotel upstairs which i was heading back to. I asked what that had to do with hot water. So, I repeated my question and she got snarky about there not being any in the side station we were standing by...mind you its the end of the night, no one else there and you might have thought I asked her to go out in the twenty degree weather to fetch me some water. She said there was a hot water machine in another "area" ten feet away and I said "great!" She rolled her eyes and complained in her co worker's ear while i stood and watched then put it down in front of me without a word or looking in my direction. So, I asked if I had terribly inconvenienced her and she said, "What's the problem?" As if I was speaking another language. We did that twice before I gave up and walked away and she very loudly barks, "Have a great night!" Ew. Oh and the food is meh. Epic fail Sundance. read more
