the food was not good. i got the queso and berry french toast. the berries were sour - not sweet, so the mix was not good at all. the eggs were over cooked and rubbery. additionally it took almost 40 minutes to get our food but the restaurant was at about half capacity. when i ordered toast, the waitress did not ask me if there was anything wrong with my meal, nor did she come back to tell us if there were nuts in the food for the nut allergy at my table. the general manager was nice and the menu sounded good but could not be executed. the inside is fairly cute but not worth going here. read more

Arrived to eat around 8 pm on a Friday evening and the place was dead. Our server was very professional and courteous. We ordered the spinach quesadillas and the steak fajita salad. Food was served promptly and was very good. Only thing I would change is adding a few more chips and a little more cheese to the salad. Yesterday was my first time going to Sundance and I really liked the whole atmosphere of the place! We went right after the Griffins game to avoid the crowds on Ionia and it was a great choice! Hattie was our waitress and from the start she was very welcoming! She was very attentive and helped us decide what to get and knew what to tell us based on what kind of flavors we liked. I just really wanted Pancakes, so I asked how much just 2 buttermilk pancakes were and she told me, and I decided not to get them. Hattie comes back out with everyones food and a pancake platter for me and says its on her and made my whole week! Stopped in for a bite to eat during Art Prize. Despite being quite busy, there was no wait for our table. The service was quick, but without many check ups on drinks, etc. The food was decent enough, the chicken wrap wasn't much to write home about and a bit pricey for basic food. Sundance Grill & Bar was the last stop on our Michigan brewery tour. It was not on the list and is not a brewery, however after a long, long night in Grand Rapids we needed a hearty breakfast. Sundance Grill & Bar was recommend to us by some friends. Their specialty is Mexican breakfast. Breakfast burritos, tacos and even nachos. The theme of this post is "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" Well let's start with the good, the BLT Bloody Mary "Spicy." Now I love Bloody Marys. I even use to ask for just blood Mary mix when I was flying as a child. I think that stems from seeing my parents, aunt/uncle and grandparents have a bloody Mary every Christmas morning while we opened presents. Sorry I have gotten off topic. The BLT Bloody Mary is really a light breakfast in itself. As you can see from the picture they serve this BM with some flair. It comes in a fairly large glass (looked like a Stella Artois glass) with a good amount of Ice, but still enough bloody Mary so you're not done in two sips. Sundance puts 1 LARGE leaf of lettuce in the BM which forms a cone around the other extras. In center of the lettuce sits three crispy strips of bacon and a large tomato slice. Now comes the part that I have never seen before but is really pure genius. Sundance serves the BM with a piece of toast, a little mayo and a shorty of beer. I have no clue what beer it was, but by the end of this craft beer trip any light beer tasted so refreshing I didn't care. So, I took all the ingredients and made myself a half BLT and sipped my BM and beer before my breakfast. The Bloody Mary itself was spicy as I asked for. It also had sort of taco meat flavor, which was unique. Not my favorite BM I have ever had, but the BLT concept was great and I will be doing this at a brunch party in the near future. Now that I have talked about the good lets continue on to the bad. This was really disappointing. I am talking about the breakfast nachos. Now I love mixing breakfast with Mexican (see Taco Bell Breakfast post) but they really missed the mark on this. First I will preface this by saying I believe my nachos were sitting in the kitchen for a good 10 minutes. I could tell because everyone else got there food 10 minutes before me and the cheese on top had already started to solidify. This was basically your classic nachos but with eggs on top. The problem was it wasn't scrambled eggs on top it was like an omelet with peppers in it and cheese on top just plopped on the top of some chips. My opinion is the chips should have been topped with scrambled eggs nicely broken up and peppers separate so that each chip could pick up a little bit of everything. Instead I had to try and cut the omelet like egg puck which then broke the chips underneath. Don't get me wrong this still tasted great it was just poorly executed. Maybe bad is too harsh of a word, but the breakfast nachos were defiantly disappointing. Let's move on to the ugly. Now this wasn't my meal it was my friends and it has nothing to do with the taste of the food as I did not try it. However, he waited even longer than I did for his breakfast to come. We eventually asked about it and we were told that the kitchen staff started to eat his food because it sat there so long. What a joke. I will say the manager handled it well and took it off his bill and still brought a new one for him. So that was ugly but I applaud the manager for admitting his team's mistake. I ordered wings and soup about four months ago. It was a slow day due to extreme weather, but somehow the wings came out actually cold, and I felt sick later. The soup was bitter and disgusting. I couldn't eat either item, but I didn't complain to the server because I had lost my appetite and just wanted to pay and leave. It took me a while to decide what even happened to the soup, but I assume the soup was left on heat so long that the herbs went bitter. I can't comment on the food because we never received it. According to the waitress and manager we were only waiting 27 mins, but that was based on when the waitress put the order in not how long we were waiting. We waited 35 mins to get seated which is fine and 45 mins later we still didn't have food. The manager was condescending and although she offered to cover the cost of our drinks it wasn't based on any type of apology. I have more than enough money to pay for drinks and food, all I wanted was an ounce of sincerity when the manager and server dealt with a slow kitchen. The main takeaway is that Sundance is always right and the customer is always wrong. So 7 adults and 3 kids no food terrible service. Got there at 10:30am, Father's Day. Hostess said 30 min wait, but bar was first come, first serve, so we sat there. Took a couple minutes to get a menu, even though there were plenty of spots open. Bartenders were nice. Waited 45 min for our food and that was the biggest minus of the morning. All l had was the Corned Beef Skillet and my husband got the Sundance Omelette. We were surprised it took that long as the big rush was over by the time we sat down. At least 3-4 tables sat there waiting to be bussed, so l'm sure they were short staffed. Once the food came out, it was good. Mine was hot, eggs were basted very well, not over done. Savory corned beef, thick slices of wheat bread and homemade tasting jam. Husband enjoyed his omelette, but they forgot his hash browns. He never asked to get them and we were never charged, so that worked out. Great, lively ambiance, music, a little loud with music and people talking, but not the worst l've ever experienced. Not sure l'd come back real soon. After reading the reviews breakfast seems like their specialty. The restaurant was nearly empty when we walked in, now I know why. The service was poor, our waitress rushed us to order, we had to eventually flag down another server to get our drinks refilled, and chatting with the other servers seemed more important than checking in with us. The food- No salsa and chips?!?! The guac was so good, but $9.00 for an ice cream scoops worth of guac and no refills on the chips? Overpriced!! We're at the tail end of a vacation, with our two last days being spent in Grand Rapids. Our hotel is dandy, but breakfast is limited. So this place got mentioned to us casually, and I ran down the street to check it out. Plenty of tables open on a Saturday morning, so gathered the wife and child and toddled over. I had two eggs with bacon and toast and fruit, and everything was amazing. The other two had strawberry waffles, and those got destroyed. Finding good southwest food in Michigan has been hit or miss, especially for brunch. Sundance has not only the best southwest style brunch, but basically the best brunch in town. My husband and I are from Arizona and Texas, respectively, and this is our second visit here. Both times have been wonderful. I especially loved the Aztec Coffee. Get it hot, though. My only complaint is that there weren't any jalapeños in the pico, but that could have just been my luck. Our server, Melanie, was super sweet and did a great job. A very strange and rude waitress Haitti insulted myself and others and never apologized. We reported her bad behavior to two managers who were speechless. We used to go to Sundance often for the weekend breakfast a few years ago and had a reliably decent time. On visits in the last year it has gone down hill. Most recently in January their beef soup was inedible and got worse as you ate it, presentation was beautiful but the salty blandness turned into an over cooked burned flavor (I personally don't know enough about cooking to know what went wrong but I had to stop eating it). The chicken wings had such an off flavor I also stopped eating them. From working in diners I think that might have been from old fry oil (?). I've never stopped eating chicken wings before but that was also too bad to keep eating. My husband ordered an entree and was really disappointed as well. Even brunch now seems the flavor went down hill. We actively avoid eating here. Even if there were no other options we would rather eat at home. I finally wrote the post when someone wanted to go here from dinner and we told them we wouldn't go. The reason for 2 stars instead of 1 is because the staff is always at least average, sometimes slightly above average. read more
