There were lots of hummingbirds at feeders when we walked in the entrance, they were beautiful to watch. Food was very good, especially fresh sopapillas with honey butter. Ambiance: The restaurant is a casual sit-down eatery located in downtown in the town of Red River. We had a party of 8 and this restaurant accommodated us comfortably. Service: Our server was spunky, sassy, and wonderful! She was so cheery, and checked in on us often. Giving an extra star here just for her! Food: I appreciated the complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa tasted yummy, and the chips were warm. My husband and I ordered the chicken + beef fajitas to share since I wasn't hungry. The order came with about 8 warm corn tortillas, shredded cheese, shredded lettuce, guac, and a sizzling skillet full of rice, beans, green and red bell peppers, and chicken and beef. This was plenty of food for the both of us. My husband was starving, and even between the 2 of us, we had leftovers! The fajitas were okay. I wasn't impressed by the place. The food here actually came out very pleasant. Our server was really great on top of that! The chips and salsa were a really good table snack to have, very well seasoned. The margaritas were good enough we had 2 pitchers. I ended up splitting the fajitas and it was still a lot of food. There was no need to get extra tortillas and toppings. The first thing I judge a Mexican (or Tex-Mex) spot is salsa. The salsa here was surprisingly really good! It tasted fresh, no funny aftertaste, and a nice, not overwhelming, amount of heat. A little too tomato-forward, in my opinion, but nonetheless solid. The chips tasted fresh too! We got some margaritas: I got strawberry, and the rest of the party got 2 pitchers of classic. Our server poured it for us table-side (unlike another red place in the same block ). The food came out fresh, hot, nicely seasoned. We had taco soup, which reminded me a chili a little bit, and a beef fajita plate for two to share. We got two settings for it which turned out to be an overkill. The only note I have about it is that I would recommend tortillas to be cooked up before serving. They were warm, but more like microwave warm. We didn't get a desert, although were recommended one by a table next to us. But we were too stuffed. Our server was lovely. She was super attentive, had a nice conversation with us, and we never had to ask for anything, she paid a great attention to details. We had a large party of 8, and she did amazing! Have been eating at Sundance since the 1990's and came back during our last trip to Red River. It was amazing as always. Great place for New Mexican food. It was delicious. I had the sour cream chicken enchiladas with green chilie sauce and it was so delicious. Ended our meal with the sopapillas and they did not disappoint. Should have checked Yelp before ate here. Funny thing is when we got back to cabin and sat down to review. I found my review from last time ate here 3-4 yrs ago. Not much has changed. Salsa still bland as is the food. Chips were stale as were the corn tortillas. Very disappointed because I used to look forward to eating at Sundance when came to Red River. Service is still very good. Waitress was attentive and very nice. Was disturbed by a person that I know has been at Sundance many years reach bare handed into the bulk chip container where they get customers chips and grab 4 chips and dipped them in the salsa pot where they get the customers salsa and eat them one at a time. Kinda gross and don't think is supposed to happen. Don't plan on going back next or any trip to Red River. read more

Oh geez. I don't usually do this but I feel obligated. Here goes. First off the waitress was attentive and very friendly. The one star is for her and her alone. This was the worst Mexican food I've ever had in my entire life. I'm not speaking in hyperbole. The worst. We will go through the entire meal. First, the chips and salsa. The chips were bland(this word rules the review), and the salsa made Pace extra mild seem like some edgy gourmet stuff. So bad. Not fresh either. Old, jarred nonsense. Couldn't eat. Drinks. We ordered a pitcher of sangria. The best I can compare it to is a boxed wine that may have sniffed an orange slice on the way to the table. The steak fajitas. Meat was cooked well, but completely unseasoned. No seasoning. At all. The tortillas were fresh and warm. The onions were barely cooked, and again unseasoned. The rice and beans, again, unseasoned. So bland. The pork tenderloin was butterflied for some reason. Extremely overcooked and dry. Again, unseasoned. The honey chipotle sauce was something you'd get in a generic gift basket from an acquaintance or business relationship. The carne adovada burrito was no better. The "red chile" sauce was a bland generic red sauce you'd find in a can at the grocery store. The meat, you guessed it, unseasoned and flavorless. Our waitress could tell something was up but we played it off, as she did her best and it wasn't her fault. We know restaurants are struggling these days, so we didn't want her comping anything to reduce the bill. She made sure to give us our complimentary sopapillas to go, and you guessed it, no sugar or cinnamon had touched them. It was fried bread with smuckers honey packages. Again, this is not my style to write this up but it's absolutely inexcusable. There is no effort to create flavorful food at all. I just dropped $100 for a meal we ate a collective six bites of. No other Mexican restaurants in town, so maybe venture out to another nearby city or just pass. read more

We ordered takeout while on vacation in Red River. They were on a 45min wait for indoor dining, but had our food packaged and ready to go in 20min. Not only was the meal tasty, the portions were huge and everything tasted fresh. While many Mexican restaurants skimp on the chips for to go orders, we walked away with a giant bag of FRESH HOT chips. The sopapillas were some of the best we'd ever had! The staff were friendly and appreciative of our business. Although it is off the main strip, this is one place you can't pass up. read more

Don't waste your time or your money! It wasn't that busy and we waited about 45 mins for our food. While we waited, we ordered some queso. It basically was velveeta, that at one point had been melted. It was pretty solid. We had to use forks to spread it on chips and tortillas we ordered. I had ordered a guacamole salad. It was 9.99 and it was maybe a handful of lettuce with three scoops of guacamole, which was not made in house as it had the bag guacamole dip consistency. I added some salsa in hopes to make it taste better. My youngest had nachos with meat. We got the fajitas with the steak option. The steak was definitely fresh, so much so that I think we heard it moo at us it was practically raw. Sometimes a restaurant will ask how you want your meat cooked, but they did not. Maybe my mistake for not clarifying, but it definitely should have been cooked longer. Worth the wait, remember this as you wait a little longer than usual for your meal. Good food takes time, these people actually make magic so be patient and bring your appetite! My grilled chicken tostada salad was so fresh, juicy chicken, all just so good. My dining companion's had green chili this and that, I tried bites and agree just outstanding...dinner was over and out comes the waitress with a complementary basket of fresh piping hot pillows called sopapillas, evidently they are known for these little devil's! There is a bottle of honey on every table and this is why, they serve them with melted butter then you drizzle honey and indulge, seriously this was sublime. There aren't too many choices for New Mexican food in Red River, and this seemed like the best. The rib eye steak, side salad and sopapilla were amazing. The New Mexican food was ok. Not much heat and the relleno was soooooo soggy. Chips were crispy and salty, but salsa was weak. The guacamole was kind of gross.
