If I were with my drinking buddies or back in my college days, this place would probably be a 5-star place to be. But as a family dinner outing it's a 3 1/2 star. I'm not bumping it to 4 because of some minor service issues and overall the food was good, not great. Had an Angry Orchard which was nice and cold. The mussel app special in Guinness and herbs was tasty, but really had no beer flavor. The fish and chips had no chips and the coke slaw was quite warm. The fish, though, was nice and crisp along with the requested side tots. Kid's spaghetti was actually a real kid sized spaghetti but average in taste. New England clam chowder was ok, kid's pizza was eh. The very uncomfortably warm bar/restaurant at 5:45 got slammed right after we got seated. Service was handled by anyone who walked by and all were friendly. A couple of times my requests were forgotten and had to be asked again with someone else. There also was a price issue on the check but it was fixed without any problems. $86 for 2 adults, 2 kids not including tip. Come at night to have a blast with your friends, but not really for a family dinner. read more

Wasn't sure about this place, as it's in a strip mall and not appealing from the outside. But my family and I really enjoyed it. The interior gives you that cheap tiki bar feel, but in a fun way. Service was great and the servers were friendly and accommodating (they broke up our parties bills). The food was very good. Crab dip appetizer was awesome. The blackened Maui sandwich, and pulled pork sandwich, along with the tater tots, were very good. Daughter had the hot diggity dog, which was ridiculous in size. We went here sort of as a last resort when our first choice restaurant ended up being closed for maintenance. The menu looked good, and the staff was nice. The food, however, was pretty bad. The glaze over the salmon was so salty that I needed two glasses of water to get through it. I also had three consecutive bites where I was spitting out crab shells until I just stopped eating the dish. The shrimp and grits was underwhelming and came out cold. The fish and chip was a overcooked and a bit burnt. We ended up complaining and getting 10% off, but I wouldn't recommend going for the food especially for the price. read more

Look, it's a sports bar ... that isn't supposed to have great seafood ... that had really great seafood the night we were there. Sundogs is one of the few bars in the Corolla area, and probably the biggest too. I'm still impressed by how many tvs they managed to pack into one bar space, and they have a massive flat screen on the far wall that apparently during the off season gets used mostly for playing video games. This seems like a big social hangout for people here, with live music and themed nights every day of the week, and they also have a pool table in back. Servers here are really friendly and chill, and anyone they know gets really personal and attentive service, so if you're any kind of a regular you can rest assured that you'll be treated well. The food is pretty typical bar food, and because of the proximity to the ocean they actually have good seafood options. Ehhhhhhhh. My family of 20! met here on check in day this past Saturday. They opened at 11:00 but we overheard the kitchen crew tell the front of house staff to not take any orders for at least 30 minutes. In that 30 minutes the place filled with eager vacationers looking for service. I saw about 10 tables sit with menus forever. Crying kids, grumpy adults and incompetent staff. The staff was hungover, lazy and unprofessional which pissed me off until my 3rd drink, then I did not give a shit anymore. They were not at all rude in any way to us but they all were over it as summer is coming to a close. We sat at the bar and gathered and some of our group went to a table to order food. The only likable item was the tuna bites and a monkey could make those. We hung out for hours. We got there at 11:30ish, my brother was there at 11:00 when they opened and stayed until almost 3:30!! I will say they never made us feel like we needed to leave but they were understaffed and overwhelmed. Our bar tab alone was over $300.00! If you find yourself in this area and you need a place to camp until your house opens this place will suffice. But after check in we were not compelled to return. The owner should hire more people but the labor pool must be lacking in this area. read more

I've been coming to the OBX in Corolla for like 20 yrs and didn't know this place existed. All the storefronts look the same in the Food Lion plaza so I thought it was just another stupid surf shop or kite store. I literally searched for a place like this my whole vacation to take my recently of age cousin to party and could not find anything. I even looked up nightlife on yelp and don't know how I missed this. The very last day of the trip I saw a guy come out to smoke a cigarette and then popped back inside. DING DING DING People at BARS do that! Following smoking man I drag my gf in and say "Oh my god, it's the holy grail. A tiki bar with a pool table, and karaoke." Devastated that this was my last night at the beach I drowned my sorrows in a couple of their great beers on tap. Rogue and Dogfish Head! Seriously need it to be next year now so that I can go live it up there with whatever the "local/vacationers" scene looks like in Corolla. Service was averagely attentive, but providing a decent answer to simple questions like, "How kickin' is the kickin' crab dip?" seemed to be beyond his capability. The biggest bummer was the amount of flies that wanted to share our meal with us. The food was okay. My husband had a foot long chili cheese dog which he described as okay, nothing great. I had a pulled pork sandwich with tots. What's the deal with these places that hand you a nice piping hot pork sammy complete with a side of freezing cold bbq sauce? Went here to get seafood. Got seated right away. sat for approximately 10 minutes until waiter arrived. When he arrived we ordered drinks... right after he set our drinks down he told us the steamer was broken. We debated staying or leaving but decided to stay. drinks were decent but I question the true alcohol content. Food was adequate. Hush puppies, which are everywhere in OBX, were not fully cooked and tasted more like pancake batter. I got coconut shrimp..it was great, but for a $10 appetizer only got 7 of them. Fish tacos were ok but rice was clumped up. Veggie burger was literally a morning star veggie burger... which the menu said, but why??? how hard is it to create a veggie burger? ribs were good, fries were good. chicken tenders were basic... we are assuming frozen. to top it off... the womens restroom has 2 toilets... one of which was clogged up with poop. we were there for 2 hours for mediocre food. waiter was great tho. I felt had he had to work at the restaurant. all in all, there are soooo many restaurants to gobto in obx. I recommend any but this one. read more

This is a cool spot to hang out and have some drinks if you're in the area. The prices are super cheap no matter what you order and there's plenty of seating, including tables for larger groups. They even have skinny girl brand flavored vodkas in case you're trying to watch your calorie intake (and seeing as how you're probably going to be in a bathing suit at the beach, this might apply to you). The issue I had with this place was the service. Our group was sitting at a table and it felt like FOREVER between the visits from our waiter. One member of our group kept going up to the bar and ordering drinks there instead of waiting for our server. This is probably only a 3 star joint, but the night we went they were having quizzo and our team won so they get an extra star for that!! read more

It's a sports bar (a few steps up from a dive bar), college flags hang from the rafters, multiple tv's hang behind the bar and a couple others around the room. Go here drink a beer grab burger or some wings and watch the game. Entertainment......Karoke nights are hilarious. We were here on our honeymoon. Both of us have mobility issues. We looked at UberEats for delivery options. We found this restaurant and because it was literally 2 miles down the road we ordered food from here. After placing the order, we called to verify that it was received. The female that answered the phone verified our order was received. After about 45 minutes. We received a text saying our order was canceled. We called again and was told that our order had already been filled and it would be delivered to us in about 15 minutes or so. After ANOTHER HOUR, we still hadn't received our order. We called the restaurant again and was told they don't do delivery at all and never had done delivery, only pickup. So we asked them to remake our order and we would pick it up. When I got there, the staff acted as if I was a bother to them. The female bartender got a nasty attitude with me. The guy who I approached about a pick up order, pushed me off to another employee and gave me a nasty expression the entire time I was waiting. I got back to the rental house and we ate. The very next day, I was sick; diarrhea. The following day, I stayed nauseous and dizzy. My wife began to feel sick after eating the food as well. We wanted to leave but we couldn't leave in the sickly state we were in. The staff there was much more friendly to the locals. I say STAY AWAY if you're not from the OBX/ Corolla area! I've been here twice while down at the shore house. One was pre-summer season and the other was this past Memorial Day weekend. Oddly enough, I had better service and drinks when it was MORE crowded for the holiday weekend. My best guess it that they "saved" the more skilled, attentive bar tenders for the busy season. Who knows. It's within walking distance of the house so that's a plus, but it also has great music and isn't ever REALLY crowded like some of the spots at the Jersey Shore (my other beach bar comparison). You're staring blankly at your the menus and books and guides provided to you by your rental company. Your travel companions start to get on your nerves, even though tonight was supposed to be taco night, but, noooo -- that's not good enough for Uncle Jimmy's heathen kids anymore, the little malcontents. You're snipping at each other, hungry for something, hungry for anything. A cement mixer with some ketchup sounds appealing right now, and with all the choices in front of you, you need to eat and no one's making a decision. Children are whining and screaming and angry too. Do yourself a favor and make the simple choice: Go to Sundogs. This is the kind of bar you're going to find back home, your local sports team's memorabilia somewhere on the wall, that beer you like on tap or in a bottle. This is bar food, through and through and a cure for wanting to kick Uncle Jimmy down a flight of stairs because dammt Uncle Jimmy, your towel belongs somewhere OTHER than the floor and no But, more so than just being bar food. The seafood is incredibly fresh; you're not going to get a fishy vibe from some unsavory crab bought three days ago after moderate refridgeration from a truck somewhere down the road. My wife ordered the peel and eat shrimp and loved them. Despite the minimal seasoning, the fresh, wonderful taste of the sea shone through, proof that not everything needs to be drowned in Old Bay and blasted with enough white wine to make Kathie Lee Gifford blush. The burgers taste like hand-pattied beef, not some pre-packaged, sell 'em by the gross frozen mix that may contain something that looked -- once -- as though it were actually, maybe beef. The pulled pork may or may not have been made on site -- who cares? It was delicious and plentiful. My kid loved the chicken tenders and of course, anywhere with deliciously well-fried tater tots that don't somehow end up with me eating more oil than they were fried in is an absolute plus. Even Uncle Jimmy's heathens calmed down their hell-spawn tornado act and ate quietly, politely. And the best part? I didn't pay like I'd fallen into some touristy, kitschy look-how-OBX-we-are-and-how-OBX-you-aren't seafood hole somewhere off Route 12. I paid about as much as I'd have paid at my local watering and feeding hole. I didn't feel rushed -- I just felt like one of the crew. If the service was slow, the fact that the manager on duty, probably one of the owners (or two), the chef and our waiter all said hello, asked where we're from and didn't hold it against us that my wife and I were from Cleveland (Pittsburghers -- they'll let them in anywhere, I guess.) and Browns fans (one of four left in nature, folks). Not many bars in OBX that have appeal or character, but Sundogs is the exception. I would best describe it as a tiki bar, sports bar, and raw bar all mixed together. Food is good and they have a great offering of draft beers from local breweries. They have college banners hanging everywhere and they promise to hang yours if you bring them one. They also have this $30 burger challenge if your up for it. Can be a bit empty during the day but it does pick up at night by offering live bands, DJ, or themed party nights. I enjoy this place and recommend getting a Kona Longboard beer on tap even though it's from Hawaii. It's a great summer ale, which I cant get it in Chicago, so when I'm in the OBX I drink it like it's water. Enjoy read more
