Sunflower has an unusual mix of sushi, French, and Thai cuisine. Despite seeing mixed reviews online--many of which were positive--we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a mistake. The meal started off poorly when the bread was served cold. The kani salad appetizer was just okay; the crab should have been finely shredded, but instead came in large chunks, and the spicy mayo was overpowering. For our entrées, he initially ordered the filet mignon and I ordered the grilled yellowfin tuna. My tuna arrived cold and chewy, so it was replaced with a filet mignon. I requested medium, but several portions were rare and inedible for me. Overall, the kitchen showed a clear lack of consistency. We both ordered the same filet mignon, yet his vegetables were soggy and overcooked while mine were undercooked and nearly raw. Even the bread was inconsistent--one piece stone cold, the next warm. His filet was overcooked, while mine was undercooked, despite both being ordered medium. Our server, Sally, was pleasant and attentive at first, but after I sent my food back and explained the issues, the level of service noticeably declined. There are approximately 8 tables inside, and they have a very large door patio. This was, without question, the worst meal of our trip--made even more disappointing because it was our final meal. You hope to end a trip on a high note, and instead, we're leaving thoroughly disappointed. Based on the above I rate this restaurant a 1 out of 5 stars. The only reason it's not a zero (if that were an option) is that the server started off pleasant and one appetizer was "okay." But overall, this clearly didn't meet even basic expectations for quality or service. read more

Came here twice with my friend and brother while visiting colonial beach for a few days. Our server Candi was fantastic, super charismatic and attentive. First time we came my friend and I both got drunken noodles, mine with tofu hers with chicken, super yummy! As well as a good gin and tonic and vodka pineapple. For dessert we had their mango and coconut sticky rice, perfect sweet treat. We sat outside both days as well, they have a nice half shaded patio with some neighborhood cats chillin out on! The second day we had gotten their lunch deal of sushi! $12 for 12 pieces of sushi! Steal!! Comes with a bowl of miso soup! Fried potsticker appetizer both times was hot and crunchy. I had their eel and California roll, yummerz. My friend got the spicy crunch tuna roll, also very yummy. 2nd time we've been here and it went well! We had a large table with multiple young kids so not the easiest to serve on a busy night. The salmon was good and in a neat presentation. The drunken ramen was amazing!! (Spicy but will definitely be ordering that again). Both rolls (the cecilia and the sunflower) were good and tasted fresh. The crab fried rice was awful though... $19 and the crab and rice/veggies had zero flavor. The duck breast of another meal was overcooked as well. Been here twice, first was to sample the Thai menu - Drunken Noodles were outstanding. 2nd time was French - the Steak au poivre was superb as well. Table service was a bit slow, but the place was packed. Solid pours from the bar. Wine list is fine, not too many selections and all affordable. We chose Sunflower on a whim. The first two restaurants had zero cars parked in their lots on a beautiful Sunday early evening when most are hoping clientele will not leave because of waiting. Sunflower was the opposite and right next door. Seating was perfectly located outside with the warm evening sun and a soft breeze off the water. The menu was loaded with delights making decisions harder. With entree' chosen (Thai fried rice with shrimp for me...Thai rice with crab & shrimp for my grandson). He selected three appetizers for us to share (fried dumplings, fried pot stickers, and Thai Lobster roll). My first bite was the dumpling dipped in a beautifully blended sauce ... one word describes ..."HEAVEN". Then the fried pot sticker ... nice but second to the dumpling. The real beauty on a plate was the Lobster roll which was artistry but at a price affordable for a newbie to Thai food like myself -- yet one you'd expect from the Chefs at any of the finest restaurants. Although bite-size delicacies, I was beginning to feel full when what is placed before me but the most flavorful and colorful rice i have had hiding a sweet surprise of chunks of pineapple and large luscious shrimp.. oh Yum! Sunflower Restaurant Review My wife, son, and I recently visited Sunflower. The staff was friendly and took our order in a reasonable amount of time, which gave us a good first impression. My son ordered the garden rolls, which took about 15-20 minutes to arrive. Unfortunately, the rest of our meals took significantly longer -- over 50 minutes. About 45 minutes in, our waitress stopped by once to let us know the food would be out shortly, but there were no other check-ins during that wait. When the food finally came out, the service became a bit disorganized. Our waitress delivered one plate to our table and one to another, then returned multiple times -- each time bringing a mix of dishes for different tables. As a result, our meals didn't arrive together, and I ended up waiting several extra minutes while my family already had their food. That's not an ideal dining experience, especially after such a long wait. As for the food itself, it looked great overall. The vegetables and barbecue flavors were good, but the ribs were unfortunately tough and not very tender. Overall, the restaurant has potential -- friendly staff and decent flavors -- but the timing and service flow need improvement. Food should be delivered to the table together, and when there are long delays, more frequent check-ins (or even a small gesture like complimentary bread) would go a long way in improving the experience. read more

We walked in about 7:45, on a Tuesday night, got asked if we had reservations ?? we did not there was three open tables at the time. I've heard that the portions could be larger, however, I didn't experience that since I had courses. The flavors in all of the dishes worked well together, and were dynamic. The spring rolls come with 5 units, and are delicious- especially the sweet & spicy dip that comes with it. The soup's contents were delicious, and the broth was potent. The drunken noodles were delicious. I ordered chicken with mine- the protein was cooked and marinated well and the "Hot" spice level. The spice was so beautiful. It added a level of complexity to the rich sauce that's standard to the noodles. The tea/lemonade had a unique twang to it that is individual to Thai teas. I enjoyed it. The hazelnut cognac ice cream was a little too creamy for my taste, I prefer a more icy/sorbet consistency. The taste was subtle, though, which I appreciated. It's the kind of place you think about finding but rarely do. Great food. Very reasonable prices. Nice people. Yeah, all the good stuff. We have a house here in town and have tried to eat here 3 times and we have been told they've run out of food, while waiting for a table they said they weren't open anymore, and the last time we needed reservations and weren't even able to wait for a table to be done with dinner. No where on their website says you need reservations. The word reservation is no where on their website. Strange that we are locals and have been turned away 3 times. At first it seems a little odd, French, Thai, and Japanese restaurant but... try anything on the menu and you'll be very happy. I had the salmon salad ($12!) and the fish was cooked medium rare like a pro without any special request. Other people in my party had the rib-eye steak, lamb, duck, and tuna salad - they were all cooked perfectly. You won't be disappointed with whatever you order. My family and I discovered the Sunflower Restaurant at Colonial Beach, Virginia on June 28, 2024. As we walked down Washington Ave (filled with shops and restaurants) we heard some great jazz music and laugher from patrons dining on the patio. We decided to check it out. What a great decision that was! The waiters were very attentive and friendly. We loved the food. The owner (who was acting as DJ) came over to greet us. We even met his wife that evening. With the beach just one block away from this hidden gem--it felt like we were at an island retreat! We plan to return soon with a group of friends. Thanks for a great time! read more

If you are hungry..... don't eat here! The potions are very small. i ordered drunken noodles. They gave me about 6 noodles. Underneath my noodles they put garnish. I think it was lettuce. they game me more garnish then anything. My daughter didn't like the taste of her food, My daughter said she likes Orchid Thai Cuisine better. I didn't have a problem with the taste. Just the portion size. I might try them one more time to see if it gets better. read more
