How do you define a solid meal? Excellent food, outstanding service, and decadent cocktails. So we went to happy hour at Petite Auberge. It may not have been their official happy hour, but it was ours--and if you know us, you know we love happy hour. We had a fantastic time. The service could not have been more attentive. Every bite had just the right amount of flavor and spice, and the cocktails were absolutely spot on. We shared three appetizers and couldn't have been more pleased. The octopus was fantastic, the truffle fries are something I'll be craving for a long time, and the charcuterie board topped everything off perfectly. If you get the chance, make a reservation and go. We left grinning from ear to ear after a great meal, great drinks, and a great evening. read more

First the good: the food is great. We have eaten there twice and both times the food was superb. But now the bad: the service was horrible. We were there for at least 15 minutes before a waiter appeared to take our order. But it went downhill from there. We were there for an hour and fifteen minutes before we received our lunches. The waiter did not alert us there was a problem, and when I complained, for the second time, about the delay, he said, "Well the food is a little slow coming out of the kitchen." That was after we had been there for over an hour, and, as I said, I complained for the second time. No matter how good the food is, and it is, it is totally unacceptable to have to wait an hour and a quarter for food. and the restaurant was not even crowded. read more

Visited on a weeknight evening for a birthday dinner. The interior is thoughtfully decorated, elevated, and welcoming. Our waiter had a fantastic personality and manners, but unfortunately the service was very slow. We were there 2 hours from beginning to finish of service. Around the table, we enjoyed the French onion soup, potato soup, braised short ribs, seared scallops, escargot, and mussels and shrimp poulette. La Petite is La Delicious! My family and I make the trip down from Quantico to celebrate my wife's birthday in what I hoped would be a formal, cozy atmospheric place. A place that offered exquisite service, mouth watering dishes, a well stocked bar, and could accommodate small children to include an 8-month old who enjoys the occasional outburst. And I'm so very pleased to say we found it at La Petite Auberge. Our server Desmond deserves a well earned shoutout for making us all feel so welcomed. Right as we arrived, Desmond had us well accommodated, acquiring very well sanitized high chair and walking us through the specials for the evening. While we would have loved to have sampled the entire menu, we decided on the braised beef short ribs, baked stuffed shrimp with crab meat, Parmesan crusted Atlantic salmon. All dishes were top notch in flavor, portions, price, and presentation. Exactly what we hoped for and then some. For dessert, we (my wife) pre-order 2x servings of the Crème Brûlée which was...perfection. Just what the doctor ordered (yea, dentists count too). Delicious flavor, cool temperature, and well paired with the wine and cocktails. Speaking of drinks! A half bottle of Malbec and an always reliable old fashion with Basil Hayden. Talk about rounding out the entire course to the max. Bottom line. La Petite Auberge is a MUST stop dining experience. Ideal for special occasions and those times where fancy dress is what you might be feeling. The restaurant is a very comfortable place, supported by histories greatest classical composers and dimly lit to set the mood. The staff do a great job of making all feel welcome, are experts in their craft, and ensure your needs and wants are addressed in a timely manner. I'd happily recommend to anyone in search for a unique and highly satisfactory meal experience. So happy we found it and I look forward to our next visit. Met a friend for lunch on a Saturday. Had a reservation for 1:30. I called from the road to change it to 1:45 since traffic seems heavy, and was warned that they close at 2:30. Since I couldn't reach my friend, I figured we'd chance it. I arrived at 1:30 and was seated promptly in an almost empty dining room, My friend arrived at about 1:45. The waiter made it a point to tell us they "locked the doors" at 3. My friend had cream of mushroom soup that she really enjoyed. She also had the eggs Benedict with salmon and loved it. For dessert she had the house made chocolate mousse. I had the quiche. I did not enjoy it - the bacon was way too salty and onions were stringy. Also they drizzled some sauce over the quiche that didn't belong at all. It came with dressed field greens (just ok) and potatoes that would have been good were they less salty. The hazelnut cake was just ok, and I'm glad that I asked for the butterscotch on the side. When we were ordering dessert, the waiter again reminded us the doors would be locked at 3. While we were using the restroom and getting ready to leave, they turned off the music and the server started changing out of their work clothes. My friend enjoyed the food - I really did not. But both of us felt rushed and not very welcome. If the point at lunch is to get people out of the restaurant, they simply shouldn't open during the day. read more

We called around 5 PM on a Friday and were told there were no reservations--but when we asked about 8 PM, they were able to fit us in. The space is upscale and inviting, though we still waited 15 minutes to be seated. Complimentary champagne helped smooth that over. Drinks were solid--my Chardonnay was excellent, and the old fashioned and beet mocktail were both well liked. The garden salads were fresh but unremarkable. Two of us ordered the short rib, which our server hyped up, but they were out. I went with the stuffed fish, which was just okay (the vegetables were the best part). My partner's swordfish was overly salty. We ended with key lime pie, which was good, though they were also out of espresso. They did comp dessert due to the missing items, which we appreciated. Service was kind and responsive, but overall the food and availability didn't quite meet expectations. I'd consider returning, but I'm not in a rush especially with the other GREAT options in the area. read more

My husband and I love La Petite Auberge. We have always been welcomed by the manager, Aaron when we come and if we make a reservation, he always gives us the best table he has available. We always get the fried calamari which is the best we've ever had and Aaron always asks the kitchen to make our favorite aioli sauce for the calamari. Their filet is phenomenal. Crisp on the outside and extremely tender on the inside. The best we've ever had. The stuffed flounder and the stuffed shrimp with crab meat are fantastic. Not to forget the fresh baked rolls. Delicious! The dining room at La Petite is comfortable. White table cloths and napkins. Very nice. Nice low key music. Enough room between tables to move around. You don't hear the conversations of the people around you. We love La Petite. Definitely worth your time and money. read more

Have been coming here for over a decade (off and on ) staff is still quite friendly (especially for a French restaurant ) and the food is still delicately delicious. Not a fan of the change to the paté (nice plating but significantly less without the glaze, but, added a nice crunch crisp underneath) but VERY happy they kept the lingonberries!!!! The changing of the paintings up on the walls makes me happy! We really enjoyed this first experience. We sat in the lovely moody bar which has lots of seating for lunch on a Saturday. Service was great and attentive and they even made toast points for us as a special request. The escargot was delicious, steak tartare was bland though and flat in flavor. Went with friends for dinner and ordered the steak, short ribs, and wrapped salmon. The brie appetizer was great, as was the short ribs. Salmon was good, not amazing. French onion soup and creme brûlée awesome. The reason for two stars is that the steak came out as a medium well/more well done when a medium was ordered. We pointed this out to our waiter and said this doesn't look medium- looks more well done, he took the plate back, then came back to our table with the steak fully cut open and asked does not that not look medium to you? We were all pretty put off given we clearly said it didn't look medium and that was the very reason it was even brought to his attention in the first place, then he returned to the table with the same steak. It felt like very confrontational, and we felt uncomfortable and just said it's fine we will take it. The waiter did question if we were sure, but at that point we all were pretty uncomfortable that he even came back to challenge the ask when clearly it would not have been brought up if it wasn't medium, so we just let it go. She didn't eat any of the steak, and the waiter when he picked up the plate didn't ask why it wasn't touched and we paid for a full steak that wasn't eaten. Would not return due to this read more

I took my wife to La Petite for our 22nd anniversary and the place had a very beautiful interior and it was very inviting. The waiter was very informative and had very good service. He gave us enough time to look over the menu and told us about the specials. I had the Lamb Chops and my wife had the Roasted Chicken. We both had a great experience however the lamb chops had no flavor with whatever sauce they had on them. They were cooked to order but I think the sauce killed the flavor. My wife really enjoyed her roasted chicken and well worth her ordering it. I even had some and it was nice and tender falling off the bones. read more

The first time I went to this restaurant, I had the best cod in my lifetime. This time I ordered the crab in butter. I believe this was the most expensive dish on the menu. Although I ate the crab, whatever it was served was watery and bitter. The crab also did not taste fresh. The waitress was very professional and apologized. Food - very disappointing. We are here a few times years ago. Now it has deteriorated terribly. Firstly the Calamari starter was all batter. The mussels were flavored with chili which spoked them. The chocolate moist was dry and tasteless. The creme brûlée was very good, as was the halibut and cod. The waiter did discount the calamari from the bill. But the standard has dropped and they could not wait to get us out of the place at 2.30. Regrettably we will not return. read more

This past Friday we had excellent food and service at La Petit Auberge. We had a reservation and were seated promptly after being given our choice of several tables. I had an excellent Grey Goose Martini with the smoked fish appetizer. The Martini is one of the best I have had anywhere in Fredericksburg. The smoked fish appetizer is a picture to look at. The smoked salmon and trout are beautifully fresh and the accompaniments are perfect - finely minced onion, capers, and a delicious tomato jam, alongside creme fresh to finish. The appetizer is plentiful and more than I could eat. I brought the remainder home. My main was fresh Halibut over a green pea risotto with a side of grilled veg. Once again a hearty serving but excellent preparation and an eye for presentation made for a superb meal. I topped off my dinner with their always delicious, chocolate mousse. This restaurant has been my "go to" restaurant whenever I wish for a special, gourmet experience. In my opinion, there is no place better in Fredericksburg. read more

A premier dining establishment in Fredericksburg. This is a favorite of me and my husband - we feel so lucky to have a gem like this in town. This place stays true to it's French roots - with a great ambiance and delectable menu. I have been here many times for both lunch and dinner and service is always great, even when they are extremely busy they are communicative and attentive. The Food. They have a very robust menu with plenty of delicious items. Everything that I have tried here is amazing, but my favs are 1) Escargots - because why not have snails at a french place? 2) Rockfish - served with a beautifully prepared spinach risotto - it's a winning combo 3) Braised Shortrib - very large portion alongside truffle mashed potatoes - tres bien! For dessert, the bread pudding is the belle of the ball - it is a great way to finish a meal. Overall, I love everything about this restaurant and will always support it! read more

My two stars still stand. I haven't been in years due to the terrible service i received the first time i came, but when we needed to scramble and make dinner plans for an occasion, they had reservations available. It started out promising, my gentleman who answered the phone and made the reservation for me was polite, exuberant, and used my name when speaking to me. This time will be so much better, i thought. Im the first to arrive for our 7pm reservation, and the host seats me, at 6:48pm. I'm told my server has worked here for 20 years or maybe was a server for 20 years so I'll be in good hands. Two more members of my party (of five) show up and about ten minutes later our server stops at our table literally huffing and puffing and says "okay, the cooks told me i can now ring in orders again. We weren't expecting it to be so busy tonight! " then she walked away without getting anyone drink order. The last members of our party show up and then another 5-10 minutes later our server returns to grab drink orders. Everyone orders bar drinks except for bc i don't drink. Fifteen minutes later the drinks are still not out. We've all decided what we want to order at this point and ate just waiting for our server. Drinks were dropped off by other servers if my memory serves me. Then we wait. And wait. Finally a blonde server with a long ponytail stops by the table and asks if we need anything and we told her we need to order! So this angel gets our her pen and pad and starts taking our app orders. In the middle of describing the charcuterie board, our server stops at the table and basically shoos her away and takes over. Okay cool, as long as we can order. Then She leaves without getting entree orders. A few minutes later she came back with a fresh drink and says "idk why the apps are taking so long". Ma'am it's not the kitchen, it's you. She gets our entree order, which was maybe ten minutes after the apps were put in, max. The appetizers started coming out (they all came separately or maybe two at a time, we ordered 4). Our appetizers were placed at the table at 7:57pm... mind you i got there at 6:48. We finished apps, server checked on us once and the food was good. There wasn't enough bread for the charcuterie and two baked bries, but it was fine. The brie was super good. The entrees came out at 8:45pm. I don't like to eat past 8, typically, let alone 845. The food was good, it always is, but apparently i forgot that the scalloped potatoes were trash. I was told it'd be an upcharge to switch to French fries, so i didn't. Mistake! My crab cakes were almost as good as they were the last time i came, and the halibut with risotto was phenomenal. Creme brulee was also delightful. One big issue i had, aside from once again being the forgotten about table, was proximity. Every time our server pointed something out on a dish, instead of gesturing towards said item, she literally pointed to it, with her finger coming within less than one inch of the food. I was CERTAIN that she was going to touch something. But she didn't. Thankfully. It just seemed so bizarre to me. Describe the item, gesticulate toward the item, and leave it at that. To top it all off, we were the last ppl there, because we were the forgotten about table- in the literal table in the direct middle of the dining room. As we're paying and everything, a cook comes out from the kitchen, clipboard tucked under an arm and with a Red Stripe Jamaican lager in hand, openly drinking. What in the world is going on at this place?? Is it because I'm black that i get such bad service? There was another black person there and it looked like she was getting good service, so that can't be it. Everyone always has such pleasant experiences here. Not i. I'm not even sure I'm willing to give it another try, just to see if the third time is the charm or what. Sigh. Just order to go. read more

Our family had the most wonderful retirement celebration lunch on a Saturday. I wanted to treat my father in law to an elevated seafood lunch. I have a toddler and an infant and was worried if children might be a problem. Our waiter, Desmond's service made me feel so comfortable. He made sure to set up a high chair for the infant and a booster seat for the toddler. He had the kitchen prepare a kid's past and made sure it came out with our appetizers. Oh, and the food! We had french onion soup and a daily special soup made with rockfish. They were both fantastic. Other dishes we had were caesar salad with salmon, whitefish filled with crab meat, and crab cake sandwich. All were very good. Loved the ambiance as well. Not crowded at 11:30 on a Saturday. Dark green walls and red brick theme made it feel cozy and refined. Although there isn't a diaper changing table, we were able to make do on top of a flat surface on top of a storage shelf in the restroom. I felt comfortable nursing my infant at the table.
