We were exploring the Shippan neighborhood and ran across this place. It was completely deserted at the time we stopped by, being the middle of the winter and with a lot of snow on the ground. Even so, this was a great discovery! They had a banner up advertizing eggnog ice cream, so we had to go in and give it a try. We both got single cones of it, and it was pretty fantastic. They have a pretty extensive menu -- hard and soft serve ice cream, a number of other desserts such as shakes, sundaes and blizzard type concoctions, and they also have a gelato counter with a nice selection. Stopped by for some ice cream since it was an usually warm day for October... And we figured since we moved into the area we have yet to try this place. I'm a plain vanilla soft serve kind of girl, but hubby likes his chocolate and nuts. So I got the vanilla soft serve with chocolate dip which I have to say is really good and I have to say I like it much better than Dairy Queen. But it does melt very quickly! Hubby had ordered a chocolate flavoured one with a chocolate and peanut waffle cone - which looked really good but the cone seemed a bit stale to me. This is where you go when you're too lazy to drive to Friendly's in Norwalk or Dairy Queen (we live close to downtown but Alive at Five was in full swing at the time). The first girl was nice, but the one who took me and my boyfriend's order wasn't as friendly. I got the moose track ice cream, which was pretty good flavor wise but could've been churned a little more. However, my boyfriend's sundae was a disaster. He asked for a typical sundae, minus the banana. We saw our server pumping hot fudge a few times into the ice cream but we didn't realize just how much until she brought it over. She went overkill on the fudge. So much that my boyfriend just couldn't it eat anymore. It looked disgusting. It turned the vanilla into chocolate!! That just goes to show how much fudge it had. I really like this place. It's across the street from the beach which makes the perfect ending to a beach day. It's great for the whole family. The only thing I will say is that the smoothies are either spot on or not and this time it wasn't as the mango smoothie tasted so off but they tried to fix it when we told them. They also gave me a huge amount of ice cream on my soft serve (which isn't a complaint) but it was a bit overwhelming as i tried to eat it all and also tried to eat the cone. I can't believe another review said they have variety...they haven't done any new flavors in the last 10 years unless you count the gelato station. We go here all the time as my son has soccer across the road. The kids love the ice cream. So why the poor review? Today monday may 22nd at 4 pm my son went on his own to buy ice cream. There is a new girl manning the till. When it was time for him to pay he pulled out a $20 note to pay for the single ice cream. She told him $ 12.50 for the single ice cream. I came here with the kids I nanny and we loved it. Very friendly staff, colorful little shop with outdoor umbrella seating, lots of delicious ice cream choices. They have really good soft served ice cream and wet toppings to dip in like chocolate, cherry, toasted coconut etc. They also have gelato ice cream, floats, shakes, smoothies and sundaes. For those who care about their calorie intake, they have a "nutritional information" board! Ps. There's a cool cow statue outside the shop that the kids loved to play around, at least it gave them something to do. I created a yelp account just so I could share my incredible experience with Sunny Daes! I called Sunny Daes last Sunday night a little after 11pm ( Memorial day), desperately in seach of some frozen yogurt. Considering the hour and the holiday, I wasn't expecting anyone to answer the phone, let alone for anywhere to be open, but when a girl is craving ice cream she must remain optimistic! Against all oods, a lovely voice answered on the other end and informed me that they were closed but that she would stay open for me because she had to clean up regardless. This benevelovent ice-cream angel then went on to ask me what type of ice cream I wanted. I let her know that soft serve was my favorite and she said that she would leave the machine on for me and, "to not rush, " that she would be there. In my state of shock and excitement that someone would go out of there way to answer the phone at that hour, leave the ice cream machine on for me, and be so incredibly friendly on the phone after what I'm sure was a very long day on the job.... I hopped in the car and raced over to Sunny Daes. When I arrived, all the lights were off, but I was greeted by a friendly wave and smile at the front door. The woman so graciously made my 3 sundaes ( for myself & friends!) with a smile and kindness that is so rare these days. I wish I had caught the name of the woman who took care of me, so that I could give her the proper credit. Of course I tipped her generously for everything that she did, but good deeds like this too often go unnoticed and customer service like this is pretty much unheard of. This ice cream parlor is a chain owned by members of the same family. They have great ice cream and great service. They make the ice cream themselves and keep it simple and delicious. I'm lactose intolerant and theirs is the only ice cream my stomach can digest without the usual side effects that come with it. They usually close up around xmas until spring. They're awesome and are in my opinion better than the Baskin Robbins, Dairy Queens and Cold Stones of the world. read more
