With everyone going health these days, donut shops are hard to find. Sunny Ds is great. The apple fritters are awesome. They sell out fast, by 7am the selection is getting thin. Get there early. There isn't usually a line but steady traffic. If you are paying with CC, their machine is dial-up and takes a couple of minutes and they charge $.45 for the card trans. This place cracks me up...no matter what time of day there are people in there. The donuts are ok the croissants are ok but the ham and cheese stuffed croissants are hit or miss. Sunny Donuts is the best donuts joint in San Diego. If you are a judging a joint by their product than I stand by my words of this being the best Donuts in SD. The donuts are freaking fresh ALL THE TIME! I work in the area and I will come before work and they are fresh, sometimes warm and then I will come by after work and they are still fresh. The donuts are so soft that if you apply a little bit of pressure it will squish these donuts. It is open 24 hours and I have never been here at night but I betcha they are fresh! Went here for the first time early this morning. They didn't have a full display shelf of donuts, lots of empty space which kind of surprised me for almost 5:00 AM..... Selection wasn't the best. When you order a dozen, you get 12....what happened to the "Baker's" dozen? $7.99 was a little expensive for "these" donuts....for that price I would have expected much better quality and flavor. The donuts were just OK....nothing great, nothing special. The donuts were a little greasy. The frosting was rather "thick" and it dried on the donuts, later flaking and falling off the donuts. Not a lot of flavor in the frosting too. I will say the donuts I got were "fresh." In fairness, I will say the lady working there was polite and friendly...no issues with the service, she did fine. I was taking 2 dozen donuts to my employees as a treat....was a little disappointing. Not sure I'll be going back to this donut shop...got to be better out there.... read more

This is a very convenient little donut shop for me. I knew this had once been a Dunkin when I saw the lettering on their menu - thankfully it's a Sunny Donuts now! DD was reliable for a quick and fast coffee...but I never thought their baked goods were anything great. My donut search is always for a delicious sugar encrusted apple fritter and I used to go to Yum Yum for theirs - but the quality was always inconsistent. I tried Sunny since it is a few blocks from where I live. I don't ever go in to sit, I take it to go. We just got a dozen and a half donuts to give to some nurses because they are working during the Thanksgiving holiday. We found a hair baked into the donuts. Obviously we threw the donuts away, after taking a picture of the hair in the donut. We called the donut shop to get our money back, but the lady was so rude! She said we MUST bring all the donuts back, but they were already in the trash. She would not accept a picture of the hair in the donut as proof. She said that was their policy and hung up on me. A friend of mine bought some donuts for breakfast from Yum Yum's and so a few days later I decided to take my two nieces and stop for a donut around noon. The donuts here were just okay, they were not fresh or really that sweet. I took a star off for the bland donuts, I am taking two stars off for the rude, insipid cashier; she never smiled and she just stood there silently with her arms crossed, I get the feeling she was angry that she had to get up from reading her magazine to deal with customers. Sunny Donuts on Spring Street is so delicious if you get their doughnuts fresh. They make their doughnuts overnight so if you go after 3am and anytime during the day you get the freshest, yummiest doughnuts. If you go at night they are not so great. I'm giving them 4 stars for taste but especially because they offer 7 different types of doughnut holes, including a powdered jelly-filled hole. Yum!
