I've delayed updating my reviews of the past several years, thinking that the food would return to the glory of the prior owner. Sadly that hasn't happened. This conclusion is based on five visits over the past year. First off, lunch or dinner finds the restaurant empty or almost empty. Service is basic and feels reluctant. I miss the feeling that I was welcomed and treated like family before. Soups are still good but the quality ends there, especially quality of the meats has gone to mediocre. My fav, Crispy Honey Chicken has gone from lightly breaded generous pieces of white meat to heavily breaded and fried hard tiny pieces of mystery meat. I've always loved the Pork Chow Mein but last night our two orders of it had about 4 small pieces of pork and very little vegetables. So, reluctantly I am removing them from my GoTo list. New fav is Folsom Palace Asian Bistro in El Dorado Hills - they have never failed me - always great! read more

Portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. The BBQ pork buns were decent, though I would've preferred a bit more flavor. The wor won ton soup was excellent, and I appreciated the option to add extra broth while I'm sick -- it was fresh and comforting. I also ordered the chicken with mixed vegetables and white rice; it was healthy, flavorful, and the portion size will easily stretch into multiple meals. The food is alright. I was craving Chinese food and this was better than Panda Express but not as good as other places. My food was ready in 15 min and when I arrived, no one was there (customers). MSG!!!! My gosh, the past owners never used MSG (monosodium glutamate) because it causes terrible reactions in people( and animals). Migraines,dry mouth, swollen belly, and worse. I had terrible experience after my meal. I sure wish the new owner would stop using MSG. I won't be back. read more

We've eaten here before and have come as a pack. This last time there were about 15 of us and much to our astonishment, the three tables, which were all connected, all ordered a variation of Orange chicken. I ordered lemon chicken and the 3rd table ordered Honey chicken. It would have been helpful if we had discussed who was ordering what, but that's ok, it was good. Someone else ordered curry chicken, you would have thought we were avoiding beef but weren't doing that at all. The only thing that was off was that the shrimp egg foo young came out deconstructed, that's a no-no because we want the big, fluffy egg patties with brown gravy. We only eat authentic Chinese cuisine. Also, everyone seemed to get the same fortune out of their fortune cookie but that's minor stuff. I've given this place so many chances, hoping it would return to the quality and service it used to have -- but today was the final straw. The service, food, and overall cleanliness have gone downhill drastically. Even when you first walk in, there's this musty, old-restaurant smell, and the seating area looks like it hasn't been properly cleaned in ages. The seating and table feel grimy, and it immediately sets the tone for what's coming. I always order General Chicken with the sauce on the side, because it's never crunchy if it comes sauced. This time, the server forgot the request and brought it out as-is. Mistakes happen -- but instead of fixing it properly, he got visibly annoyed, took the dish back, and then returned it after my family had already finished eating. The kitchen had refried the chicken with the sauce still on it, and it came back burnt, charred, and mushy. You could taste the burnt sauce, and the meat had a strange, almost defrosted texture. When I asked about it, he actually said he "wasn't going to waste the chicken" to make a new one -- even though he made the mistake in the first place. The rest of the food tasted cold and low-quality, like it had just been pulled from a freezer. This place used to be good, but it's clear there's corner-cutting happening in both service and the kitchen. Overall, a completely disappointing and honestly gross experience. Normally I'd give Sunny Garden 5 stars. I pretty much order the same thing every time, which is Salt & Pepper Fish & Green Beans. I messed up tonight by not checking my food before I left and they sent me home with salt & pepper pork (I absolutely do not eat pork!) Unfortunately, they were closed so no way to get help with my order, no email on their website either. My green beans were perfect per usual and my fam liked the shrimp fried rice & cheese wontons. The steamed rice was good too. I'll be back but not leaving without checking my food. Everyone makes mistakes but this was a big one for me since I do not eat any types of pork - the only reason they didn't get 5 stars. The staff is super nice tho. I'm so sad to be writing this review as my family and I have been going here for YEARS and it's been a family favorite for so long. The last few times we have ordered pickup I've noticed a decline in quality but this week when we went in to eat was the last chance. We sat down I ordered water and a sunny d for my son. The sunny d had what looked like pieces of stuff floating in it so I checked the expiration date and it expired in February. I took it away and waited for our food. We had kung pao chicken broccoli beef honey walnut shrimp with fried rice and chow mein. The rice and chow mein came out first it was good but tasted like it had been frozen and just heated up and then seasoned with chicken ramen seasoning not great but not horrible either. When they brought out our entrees this is when things took a turn. Kung pao chicken came out and the moment they set it on the table I could tell the chicken was rotten. It smelled horrible but I decided just to try a bite and immediately knew it was not good to eat. I called the guy over and told him it was bad he took it back but I have no idea how they didn't smell the rotten meat when they were cooking it. Next came the broccoli beef which also came out smelling bad, not as rancid as the chicken but since I had that issue I smelled it before I ate it and could instantly tell it was rotten. This time I didn't just send it back I asked him to remake it because that was for my son and he was hungry. They brought it back and it was actually a lot fresher when they remade it. Last was our honey walnut shrimp which was cooked really well super crispy and the flavor was delish. At this point I just stuck to eating that because I was traumatized lol at the end of dinner I decided just to pack the shrimp and beef to go so I started putting everything in to go containers and when I got to the LAST PIECE of SHRIMP there was a super long thick black hair wrapped around it. Having been away for a while, I had not been here in some time, but I used to come here every week! Tonight I had a lightbulb moment when thinking about dinner... SUNNY GARDEN! I ordered my usual for pick up and it was really disappointing! Not sure if they got new owners. The usual nice ladies weren't present, and food was not the VERY fresh and delicious quality that I loved about Sunny Garden. Usually the veggies were crisp and bright and everything had a fresh lightness. Instead, It was heavy, oily and salty. Sadly, I won't be back. :( UPDATE: ya, new owners. We are a family of 4 from San Jose and we're in Folsom and we're craving Chinese food. Found this place and ordered a family meal to go along with some chowmein. Picked up our order and took it back to our hotel. The orange chicken and chowmein were packaged in trays with lids and the friend rice and chicken with vegetables were in small boxes. The fried rice looked like it was soaked in soy sauce and lacked any kind of flavor, the kids who are rice lovers took a bite and did not like it. The orange chicken and chicken with veggies was good. The chow mein and won ton soup lacked flavor. Our Chinese food restaurants back in San Jose are way better tasting then this place. Sunny Garden is a Chinese restaurant in suburbia Folsom near the The Parkway subdivision. The menu is typical Cantonese and Americanized Chinese food. It is a solid contender with all the neighborhood Chinese restaurants. What stood out for me was some uncommon menu items not found in most of the typical restaurants around there. They had crispy skin chicken. It was pretty good considering I am in Folsom! But they do not serve it with Szechuan pepper salt. It is served with a soy ginger sauce that had a bit of a spicy kick. Plus I was hankering for some vegetables. The woman I spoke to while placing my order said to ask because sometimes they have Asian vegetables that are not on the menu such as gai lan, pea sprouts, and bitter melon. Most Chinese restaurants in this part of the Folsom 'burbs do not have these as menu items. Besides the gai lan and crispy skin chicken, I ordered the sampler plate and white rice. The sampler plate had 6 riblets of bone-in char sui pork and two of each- chicken skewers, fried vegetable egg rolls, fried prawns, and fried cream cheese wontons. Mmm. The husband and wife run restaurant has a great lunch menu at a very good price to fill your belly. Here's my review of the food: Thai Spicy Basil Chicken: 7 - While the spice was perfect on this dish and the chicken was clean and plentiful, I prefer it to have more veggies. The basil cooked down leaving you with mostly chicken Fries Rice: 9 - While lacking in soy sauce, this is a very clean fried rice devoid of overwhelming oils or butters. A dab of soy sauce made this VERY tasty!!! Egg Roll: 6 - Not much flavor and a bit on the oily side Egg Drop Soup: 9 - I don't typically like egg drop soup but this one was full of flavor and the egg was cooked to perfection. Pretty decent food, but I would order a different main dish next time. There will soon be new owners but the plan is for the food to be the same. Only time will tell. read more

Went to lunch at Sunny Garden today- was hungry for Chinese Food. As usual the staff are so friendly and make you feel so welcome. The lunch meals are a bargain and really great. For about $12 or $13 you get a feast of wonton soup; choice of rice, brown rice, fried rice or noodles; egg roll and at least 10 or more entree choices. My favorite are the dry green beans with chicken or pork; they are seared string beans with spices and don't break my calorie bank. But t my husband got the orange chicken which was lovely. It reminds me of the old days Chinese-American with tons of great food. The spot is cozy; clean and happy. I have never had a mediocre meal there and the food and soup are always piping hot-steamy. As is the green tea. Lovely small business that has been there for maybe a decade? Will go again and again especially since a lunch is half the cost of most eateries nowadays. read more

This is our go to Chinese restaurant. We prefer to order the family-style menu as there is a lot of food for your money. Their food is made fresh and is delicious! We typically have leftovers, which allow us to enjoy the meal more than once. Highly recommend their Won Ton soup, General Chicken and Almond Chicken. Dine in or take out both are great! read more

We have been coming to Sunny Garden for years. Because of COVID, we missed about 18 months. Today we ordered our standard Pad Thai and Salt and Pepper Shrimp. They both were awful. They both were over salted and cooked in a manner that wasn't even close to the standard we were used to. The shrimp were over spiced and were not even crispy. Hadn't eaten here in at least a year but went today for lunch. I had the crispy honey chicken with fried rice and the crab cream cheese puff. It also came with delicious hot and sour soup and all for $8.50. I absolutely loved the crispy honey chicken!! Batter fried in a slightly sweet and spicy sauce which was sticky and flavorful. The fried rice was perfect flavor and texture and the combination of the two was perfect. Everything about the meal was excellent, and I recommend you check them out. Why only 4 stars you ask? Well... our server was a big aloof. It wasn't the lady who has been there forever who is so nice and always on the ball, this lady spaced out right in the middle of our order. It was quite weird and I am not sure what happened but my friend ordered and when I looked up to order she was staring at my friend and then thought I had just ordered... what my friend had ordered... it was strange. Post-covid update; we had lunch here on Saturday 2-11, and the restaurant was warm & inviting on a cold, blustery day. The owner is always cordial when greeting you, and hot tea was promptly ordered & served. We had lunch plates of Sweet & Sour Chicken, and Garlic Prawns. Both entrees were delicious, the portions huge and leftovers guaranteed for another day. I was pleasantly surprised by Sunny Garden! I went inside to order take-away and was immediately greeted by two smiling women, both friendly. I was the only patron inside, which would normally make me leery, but I was famished and grateful for the quoted ten minute wait time. I ordered: large brown rice ($3.25), crab cheese puffs ($8.00), mu shu vegetable ($9.50), chicken with green beans ($10.25), and broccoli beef ($11). Excluding the cash tip, my total came out to $45.26. The food arrived quickly, was packaged nicely for the car ride home, provided generous portions (hooray for leftovers), and everything was seasoned well and tasted fresh! Although a previous reviewer called everyone who likes this place dumb- I'll still endorse it. Who cares about that Schmohawk's opinion? I have had the worst luck finding half way decent Asian food in Folsom. However, there is a lot to like about this place. First off, the friendly service which we received was a nice change of pace for me and my family. The lady who took our order was very patient as we looked through their extensive menu, and even escorted my 4 year old son to select a drink from their cooler. For an appetizer, we chose the pan fried potstickers. Wow! If these are not homemade, I would be surprised. Have you ever had fresh made pasta? That's what these little heavenly delights tasted like. Needless to say we were off to a good start. For entrees, we chose the basil chicken, and beef chow mein. I was reluctant to try what I would consider a Thai dish, but my wife insisted on the basil chicken. Their version was just OK. I like the fact that they used white meat chicken , but I felt that the dish lacked the flavor I have come to expect from this dish. The dish needed more sauce, and more basil. Again, it wasn't bad- just not up to par with their potstickers. The beef chow mein was really good. The noodles tasted homemade, and the cabbage throughout was a nice touch. I added a little chili sauce to my chow mein, and I was in heaven. My only small complain was the quality of beef used in the dish- which I found to be fatty and tough. The dining area is small (maybe 12 tables) , but this place does a ton of take out business. We saw customers coming in and out consistently as were we were enjoying our dinner. In my opinion, this place deserves a solid 3.5 stars. I may upgrade to 4 if I find that can't miss entree. read more

The texture of the sesame beef was crispy, which was unexpected from a dish that contains a sauce. This added a little surprise to my taste buds. The wanton soup was a great thing to start and end the meal with because of its simple and delicious flavors mixed with a well made wanton. I could've tasted the hard work that was put into making the wanton. The only thing that bothers me is the seasoning of the sesame beef and the Thai spicy chicken but the dish defined the name of the dish pretty spot on like the Thai spicy chicken. The spice level was spot on and the chicken was not dry. The pricing for the food is very affordable too in my opinion especially because of the food portions. read more
