First time trying Sunny Side up for breakfast. They were busy but when get inside they have plenty of tables and staff. Our server took care of us right away but the food didn't arrive for a good 45 minutes after ordering. They also don't allow a substitute for the side of grits that comes with the egg dishes. I ordered a mushroom and cheese omelet. I thought it was good and should have added a side of bacon as bacon is good with everything. I'm not typically a breakfast person at home, but it's always been one of my favorites to eat out, so trying to find a good place close to our new home is paramount. The Sunny Side Up diner in Calabash is only a few miles away so we gave it a try. This is clearly a locals hangout. The waitstaff is well seasoned and appear to know a lot of the customers. After our experience we are looking forward to being a couple more locals who frequent this place. Prices are more reasonable than most beach places. Portions are good. We had a few friends with us and all 4 of us were very pleased with the quality of our food. It appears they just remodeled and resurfaced the parking lot too. I swear I'm not trying to sound like or be a Karen, but I feel I need to be completely upfront about my review. The food is pretty good, the service less so. Now I want to give benefit of the doubt and say that maybe our server, Rebecca, was having a rough morning(trust me I understand that servers are human too), but I don't believe that should excuse her blatantly being hostile towards my fiancé. I was overwhelmed and asked him to order for me and when he did she seemed to get upset and began ignoring him. After I ordered she waited for me to hand my menu over, but when he ordered for himself, she essentially snatched the menu out of his hands before he was even done speaking. When our food came out, once she set our food down she pointedly turned towards me and said to enjoy your food. Like I said, I completely understand having a bad day, all the other service we received was amazing as well as the food. We typically leave a 50-100% tip when our service is anything other than blatantly rude/hostile, and we planned on doing the same here, but we felt like the service wasn't able to meet that minimum. read more

They had so many items to choose from it was hard to choose what to eat, plus the specials they had. I decided to go with the special, steak skillet, it was excellent. Steak nice and tender. My wife had biscuit and gravy, pancake and scrambled egg. A few minutes after we ordered, the power went out (I believe the power went out in the entire area of Calabash), but the staff did not miss a beat and luckily this restaurant's stove/oven was gas so we got our food. Ate it in the dark BUT about 15 minutes after we got our food, the power came back on. The staff did not miss a beat with the power outage and kept rolling. To me, this is the best spot in Calabash to get breakfast. It's absolutely my favorite! The owner and her staff are always amazing very attentive and super friendly. I've never gotten a bad vibe in there. My favorite dish is the shrimp and grits with a side order of smoked sausage, my husband loves the omelette and my son loves the Belgium waffles. Stopped in for a late breakfast at noon. Asked if they were still serving breakfast, waitress said yes. We ordered. When the food arrived, the hash browns were cold and the Eggs Benedict luke warm. Menu stated it was Canadian Bacon on the Eggs Benedict. It was actually ham. It appeared our breakfast was not made fresh. The restaurant was not busy, but service was slow. Found this diner on Google. It's actually fairly roomy for a diner and offers lots of onsite parking. Upon entry we were greeted by a friendly hostess then was seated immediately. The waitress was nice, not overly friendly but nice. The patrons appear to be locals and not tourists like us. The ambiance wasn't anything unique or memorable but it was clean and extremely quiet! No loud talking, no music or rowdy behavior. The food was good and the prices were reasonable. I had a bacon cheeseburger and fries ...the burger was pretty thin but it was good. However, being from the south, I know and love sweet tea, so I was unimpressed with the sweet tea here! It was weak but it was sweet so I drank it. My son and nephew ate breakfast...they both said they enjoyed their food which came from the kids menu. I was going to give 4 stars but I took off another star because charging a, I think, 4% service fee for using a credit card was utterly ridiculous!! My sister, her partner, and I came to have a late brunch around 1:30 on Saturday. I come here often because the place is delicious and the atmosphere is wonderful. Even this time. Our waitress seemed nice and attentive until it was time to pay. I didn't leave a tip on the table because I very seldomly carry cash. Apparently my waitress noticed this and her attitude towards me quickly changed. She cut my sentences off, stanched my card out of my hand. All because I didn't leave a cash tip. This diner did not disappoint with a well prepared breakfast that hit the spot. The eggs were done just as I would like, well done but not dry and crumbly (I do not like runny or liquid/gooey eggs). The chopped steak was cooked well without drying it out like most places can do and tasted pretty good. The pancake was nice, golden without being overdone with enjoyable taste. Grits were well prepared and the buttered rye toast put the perfect touch on this morning treat. Our server continued to make sure we were well taken care of, with a pleasant smile and demeanor. My Friends and I came in to eat today before noon, we ordered waffle, pancakes and A BLT. It took a little longer than it should have, The waitress said the waffle maker died and they had to plug in another one. But, when we got our food, all of it was cold , the butter would not even melt on my waffle, the pancakes were pitiful The onion rings were also cold, waitress took the onion rings back and they just put them back in the grease and now they are WELL done. Once your order is taken, back to hide in the kitchen. Too bad if you're a coffee drinker. Someone may come out of the kitchen eventually to ask if you'd like more coffee. You'll never see wait staff in the dining area checking on their customers. Reason is, they're too busy talking in the kitchen.
