Taken aback. That's the phrase that keeps running through my mind. First, I was taken aback the moment I walked in ... by the friendliness and welcoming nature of Sunny's (and Sunny herself). For whatever reason, I keep flashing back to Flo from Mel's Diner. Not because of the sass, but because of the warmth. Every single person who walked through that door seemed like her best friend. When I was leaving, I told her what a delight she was, and she responded, "I love what I do. Does it show?" Yep, sure does. Second, I was taken aback by my breakfast. Now, to be fair, I didn't actually read the menu closely. I'd been up and out of my house by 5:30 a.m. to shoot the sunrise along the river. I'd had a LOT of coffee, so I just ordered water (though now that I read other reviews, I realize I missed out), and I thought, "I'll just go a little on the lighter side and order a breakfast sandwich." Ha! I expected maybe an amped-up version of an Egg McMuffin, but what I received was the behemoth you see posted here. I'm not a gravy person, so I can't speak to that, but I CAN tell you this sandwich was so ridiculously delicious, I can't imagine anyone wanting to add ANYTHING to it. I could only eat half and brought the other half home to my husband, who, even after it spent a couple days in the fridge, said it was truly excellent. It's a bit of a drive from the Carson Valley, but I'm pretty sure they'll be seeing me again. read more

I definitely recommend this place for all times of eating!!! I had Country Fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, gravy (on the side) and a side of Mac and cheese. My first time at this restaurant & my last even though I live real close. Here's the challenge, gravy & biscuits. If you just open a can of gravy & serve it over flat biscuits then I don't need to know anything more about the rest of food you serve. The bland gravy at this restaurant can only come from a can which was probably purchased at the Chief 's Store in Carson. On the positive side, the service was good, the coffee served in a real large cup was very good. But ohhhh GODDDDD, the gravy was monumentally disappointing! So bland that a gallon of hot sauce would not improve it. So here's some advice from someone who was taught to make gravy standing at great grandmother's knees in the 1960's start with flour, sausage, bacon grease as a base, throw in a chicken/ beef bullion cube, add some cumin, pepper, half a teaspoon of sugar, even a teaspoon of good chili powder if desired. There are a lot of ways to make gravy taste good. Use some spices!!! Here's a trick, you can add that combination to the crappy canned gravy and make taste a lot better than just opening a can heating it & serving it over flat biscuits, I'm not gonna get started on the biscuits. Just saying... fluffy was missing! In reality it should be against the law to serve canned gravy in any restaurant. So folks at Sunny's Cafe you can do better! Make your gravy epic, put some love, put some flavor in it, and people will love you for it! Oh and bring fluffy back to the biscuits. read more

Back again, why do I bother to look at the menu when the only item which is to die for is the only dish I order. Their chicken fried steak is pretty darn good. I've kinda perused their menu for other options but I seem to always settle back to their chicken fried steak. I've been told that some people said the portion size was too big, I just roll my eyes, I can't help it if people are seemingly always on a diet. To me it appears more of and appetizer portion serving size. I'm starting to tell Sunny that I might just have to start ordering two orders because the serving size seems small to me, lol. Their chicken fried steak is most definitely the best for this area, maybe I'll venture out and open my horizons and actually order something else, fat chance, lol. read more

Nice locally owned restaurant in Dayton. It's not fancy. But it is friendly! I had the blt which was fine. The potato salad was nothing special. Others had the grilled cheese and a Philly cheese steak. Both were enjoyed. Only one vegetarian option. It's Dayton, the choices are limited but this is five stars for service and friendliness and a menu that will make most people happy. read more

We literally JUST finished lunch at Sunny's and were completely happy. I had the chef salad and it was perfect. Plenty of ham, Turkey, and cheese, but not too much. The blue cheese dressing was excellent. My husband ordered the BLT with potato salad. He said the sandwich was REALLY good and I know the potato salad was good because I stole a few bites. The ambiance is great. You feel like you're sitting in mom's dining room. It's cozy and comfortable. The staff are all super friendly and even took the time to visit with us. Finally made it to Sunny's Cafe today. Clean and bright with lots of parking. Wonderful country feel! We were greeted and seated right away. I love the main dining area. Simply family style dining and settings. There is a small play area for the kids to enjoy while waiting for the food to arrive. Our waitress was very attentive and checked on us often. We all had different sandwiches, grilled chicken, tuna, and I had a burger. My burger was excellent- done just right with pepper jack cheese and crispy bacon! The other two sandwiches were delicious, fresh and filling according to the rest of the party. Just the right size for a lunch along with the side salad. There wasn't much talking once our food arrived. We were too busy enjoying our meals. This is a great addition to our Dayton community. Stop by for some good home cooking and good company. We ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs, French Dip and Cheesesteak. After we had our order in a were expecting our food to come out the waitress informed us that they were out of meatballs. We swithced our order to the Chicken Parm and it was good but came out 10-15 minutes after the French dip and cheesesteak came to our table. There was no aujus sauce for the French dip and the Cheesesteak was so dry that I could not eat it. My son had the French dip and said it was very tough. Not sure I would eat there again. read more
