As someone who does not know much about cars, it is a huge relief to have a mechanic I can trust to recommend only the work my car actually needs. Most recently, a dealership quoted me nearly $2,000 for several repairs and maintenance services, (just the vitals because I couldn't afford it all) including spark-plug replacement, transmission service, and fluid changes, and one other thing. Fair Oaks Auto Care completed the necessary work for well under $900--and also included several (like 8+) additional maintenance services my car needed, including an oil change! (yes, yes, I haven't been taking care of my car for awhile) I was genuinely impressed by how much more value I received for the price. Their rates were more than fair, the work was completed efficiently, and they explained everything clearly without pressuring me into unnecessary services. It is also clear that many of their customers are long-time repeat customers, which says a lot about the trust they have built in the community. After keeping the vehicle for over two hours, they recommended replacing the struts and a switch for the A/C, quoting $2,300 in repairs. Trusting their diagnosis, I approved the work, only to drive off with the same crackling noise still present. When I called them about it, they casually suggested it must be "some other issue," which immediately left a sour taste in my mouth, especially after spending that much money. I decided not to return and instead took the car to another shop, where they quickly identified and fixed the problem. Then, just two weeks later, the A/C failed again, despite their assurance that all issues had been resolved. Regretfully, I brought it back, only for them to keep the car all day and call right before closing to inform me that the compressor was now bad and would cost another $1,000 to fix. I am deeply dissatisfied with this shop. It feels like they're more interested in squeezing every possible dollar out of customers than actually diagnosing and fixing problems at the root. They've shown a complete lack of accountability and competence. I will never return here, and I strongly urge anyone considering this place to avoid it at all costs. Firstly, their Santa Clara location doesn't do STAR smogs, so my bad - although it's in the name. This time I went there to get my 2011 E-350 fixed with the following 1) Oil Housing Seepage: Stevens Creek of MBZ quoted me $2000.94 and Tha did it using OEM parts for $539.73. 2) Engine Mounts: Stevens Creek of MBZ quoted me $2693.80 and Tha did it using OEM parts (and the Transmission Mount) for $919.15. For reference, for #1, Stevens Creek MBZ quoted me $1847.93 in March 2025 (so their price went up 8% in less than 11 months) and for #2 they quoted me $2609 in March 2025 (3% increase in less than 11 months). This excuse for "oh inflation is causing prices to increase" is BS because for the rest of us (like me), our take home pay doesn't go up by that much in 11 months!
