Searching for Chinese in Charlotte, I found that this place had an intriguing menu. They are retro in the sense that there is no online ordering, so I called in. It is busy enough that plenty of other people had also called in for takeout. The price was higher than I thought it would be by a significant margin; I thought something was off but then rechecking their menu I saw it was indeed $20 for a vegetable entree. On the upside, they did offer brown rice at no extra charge. Still, I'll get three meals out of it and as someone who eats a lot of takeout, this was not a great value. In terms of quality, I was thrilled to find that they offered a stir-fried okra dish. This is a ubiquitous Indian dish, and of course okra is common throughout the tropics globally, but I'd never seen this offered at a Chinese restaurant before. And the rapid cooking technique typical of the cuisine produced a delightfully crisp vegetable, which went great with a black bean sauce and some very hot dried chilis. On the other hand, their interpretation of ma po tofu had some fermented broad beans but minimal vegetables (sometimes you get mushrooms or peas or at least some leeks or something) and no numbing sensation. I have eaten at Baoding a handful of times in the past few years. I've always enjoyed the food and occasional cocktail. Today at lunchtime I was very disappointed. I asked if they had crab rangoons. The waitress pointed to the wontons. 10.00. I was served tea and water and the wontons arrived quickly. I think there were eight. I ate a few but noticed there was little to no filling in each wonton. I mentioned this to the waitress politely and she said she'd bring two more. They were the same. My bill arrived. 15.00. I'm not sure what else I was charged for. I think it might be for the two "extra" wontons that I expected would be complimentary. I tipped the waitress 20%. I visited the restaurant with some friends for dinner. Service was efficient and cordial. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. I found the food to be just okay. It took me a while to decide what to order. I finally selected the Hibachi Trio with chicken, shrimp, and beef over veggies (onions, mushrooms, broccoli,, and carrots), with shrimp sauch on the side. The food is very good. Dining-in is a great experience. But there is no way to order online and it is too expensive. I ordered egg drop soup to go. A pint is $6!! Double the price of other places close by. I ordered here because it was most convenient and my other options are closed on Tuesdays. The soup was good, but not any better than places nearby. When you first walk in, it doesn't look like your typical Chinese restaurant. The neon lighting made the place look a bit eclectic/nightclub-ish. I didn't hate it; it just wasn't what I was expecting. I loved seeing that they serve Chow Fun here because it's hard to find in Charlotte, but I'm not sure why they spell it as "Chow Foon" on their menu. I tried their House Chow Fun, which was supposed to have chicken, shrimp, and pork, but I was quite disappointed in the dish. So we've been eating here for 9 years in a row we always dine in every time we go to the mall and today we got to go, and it was probably the worst food I've ever tried in my life when it comes to Chinese I don't know if they got new kitchen staff or they made their ingredients poor quality to save on food cost and up their menu prices. Just one thing their general tsos now has starnes spice in it or some kind of cinnamon flavor to it I don't know what it is, but I don't like it. This is not the same restaurant I've been eating at for all these years. Please go back to cooking the same way you guys used to cook for all these years. It's such a shame. I am sad to give a one-star review of a restaurant where I've been a loyal customer for over 30 years, but I'm terribly disappointed with the current management. I picked up my takeout order two days ago and the order was wrong. I immediately called and was told they'd issue me a credit. However, when I called today to order takeout and reminded them of the credit, the manager claimed no recollection of the conversation and told me I'm being difficult. I receive hundreds of dollars in gift certificates to this restaurant from my husband each year so I have absolutely no need or desire to scam this restaurant ~ I want it to continue to thrive. I've been dining at Baoding since the late 90's. We used to be able to make it from the coliseum office park area to SouthPark, eat at BaoDings, and get back to the office in a little over an hour. From 2016-2020 my office was right next door and I ate there probably once a week. Several office mates ate there multiple times a week. Our office closed, but, I take my family there at least once a month, and, meet up with co-workers there from time-to-time. Needless to say, its my favorite restaurant in Charlotte and has been for over 25 years. Ask for Mike or Mae and you are guaranteed to get the best service. I went here with Ben for lunch on a Tuesday. Parking was chaotic because they are resurfacing the asphalt. Ben has been here many times & recommended the Kung Pao chicken. I got a spring roll for an appetizer which was so tiny, it was gone in 3 bites. I had the House Fried Rice special which comes with chicken, shrimp & pork. It was huge! I like prefacing my reviews with anything I believe might color my opinion one way or the other. So in the spirit of honesty I want to note that I have eaten at Baoding or had Baoding takeout countless times since it opened. Our rehearsal dinner was there. It's a family favorite. It's a SouthPark staple. Still, I decided to review it at last with eyes wide open and as unbiased as possible. We met two friends there and collectively had four appetizers (chilled cucumbers, vegetable dumplings, seaweed salad, and fried string beans) and four main courses (pineapple fried rice, shrimp chow foon, Singaporean rice noodles and mapo tofu). Yes, lots of veggies and lots of leftovers. I have had every one of those dishes in the past and while the seasonings change somewhat depending on the chef, the basic tastes remain the same and the quality is still high...with one notable exception, and I admit I was so disappointed about it I almost knocked off a star! The chilled cucumbers used to be this tantalizing mix of heat from Chinese red peppers, chill from the cucumber slices and a vague sweetness from the brine. But not a single pepper was in sight. I miss the old chilled cucumbers almost as much as the long-gone and much-lamented scallion pancakes. But that's me, and they were still good, so no points off for good food that had changed since last I ate it. Happily, the mapo tofu (my choice of entree) was fabulous, as were other appetizers and entrees (especially the fried rice, best in town) and our waiter, who must have a side job as a stand-up comic, was incredible. What a terrific evening. Is Baoding a perfect Chinese restaurant? No. Like virtually every Asian restaurant in the south, Baoding has modified its offerings to accommodate American tastes in order to survive. So what? Baoding remains a solid place to go for a nice lunch, a family supper, a date night with drinks, takeout on the weekends...because the food, across the years, the service across the years, the experience across the years, is excellent. Oh, my. What happened to this place? I've eaten here a lot over the last 30 yrs but my last visit a week ago left me wondering, what are they thinking? My very basic chicken and broccoli had no flavor, the white sauce slimy and sticky, broccoli terribly overcooked and congealed under the heavy, weird sauce. Very poor food quality. As for service? Yes, they do seem to be in a bit of a hurry/not friendly/rushed. It's a real shame because Baoding used to be a very popular, hip place to dine. While working in the South Park business park in the early 2000s, we'd order take out for lunch and it was a real treat. Really looked forward to it! What a shame and I really hate to see this Charlotte staple disintegrating. As for the comments about the 'outdated decor'- that's what charm is all about. You see the purple piping of the air duct snaking across the restaurant and you know you're at Baoding. No complaint about that. Just hope their food quality and service improve. read more

I'm from New York, the home of amazing Chinese food. This gem in Charlotte is better than any Chinese restaurant I've ever had in the Big Apple, or its vicinity. Highly recommend starting with the Szechuan wonton's. They've got a nice mild spice, finished in delicious peanut sauce. The star of the show is the shredded beef. If you're looking for good traditional (not hipster) Chinese food in Charlotte, this is where you go. It has a lot of energy, the service is good, and the food is strong. Atmosphere is also good, and if you look closely, it maybe used to be a nightclub because it looks like there is something that used to be a DJ Booth in back corner. For food... At first it seems a little ridiculous to spend $7 on cucumbers but it's worth it. A little stronger on the seasoning and it would be a 10 for an appetizer. The Wonton Soup is excellent, but you might need to order two servings if you can eat. The Pork Lo Mein is highly appetizing. You will ask yourself if you love it and then realize it's all gone. The General Tso's Chicken is good. I wouldn't say amazing. I didn't have any Sesame Shrimp, but apparently it needs salt. Either that or it has too much salt. Not sure which. The beer is good. Nice and cold in a clean glass other than a fingerprint or two (like at any traditional Chinese restaurant). read more

Earlier this week, I was craving Chow Fun, so I ended up here for a super-late lunch... Well, first of all, the place looked great. Think they might have renovated their booths? Can't believe how long this place has been around...and great to see it's still doing good business. Now that I started with the positive, I have to be honest. As much as I'd love to drop 5 stars on this age-old establishment that I actually liked (like?), my latest lunch experience was below average at best. I ordered their version of Chow Fun (labeled Chow "Foon" on the menu...not sure if that's another correct version or wrong spelling on the menu??) ...House Chow Fun, which came with a mix of meats. Well, sadly, this dish was utterly tasteless. There was zero flavor to the dish! In fact, I think it's the blandest Chow Fun I've ever had! I had to pour some Soy Sauce from the table to make it edible...but even so, just tasted BLAH. Also, I ordered Seaweed Salad on the side, and there just wasn't much of it. Half of it was some white radish and carrots...as if they were compensating for not having enough Seaweed Salad (??). Not sure what I thought about that either. I wanted to have the waiter/waitress bring it back and spice it up more...but the thing is the waiter/waitress never came! Not sure if it was the waiter or the manger, but he didn't stop by my table to check on anything until around the time I was basically done, and ready to pay my bill. I basically gave up waiting to return the dish. Same with the water service. It never came...until around the time I was actually paying for the bill. Talk about delayed lip service! In short, the service was horrible...on top of the dish being beyond bland. As much as I like this restaurant, seems that for me, something is always off...if not the food, the service, or just something! I almost gave this a 1 star review for this latest lunch experience (bad food + bad service!!), but I stopped myself since I've had some good-to-great dining experiences here in the past.
