Soo happy with my choice! Huge space, very pub like, comfy booths and big bar. The menu was huge..so many items to choose from! Staff was very friendly too. We started with a pitcher of sangria for $17.99 cant beat that! Great for sharing. Then it was the nachos! Omg delish, soo fresh, hot, cheesy, tons of meat, each chip had a little bit of everything, which is hard to do sometimes with nachos. We got the half order which as you can see in the pics it was plenty! The calamari was fresh and crispy, very yummy! For my meal..gosh i know we ordered a lot of food but we couldnt help it haha...i had the fried chicken ranch sandwich. The chicken cutlet was beyond fresh, very flavorful, not dry at all, soo tasty! I wish i had one right now lol The cuban that was ordered by my mother was delicious as well, soo much meat and again FRESH! I mean idk what else to say besides this place is wonderful! What stood out to me the most during a Friday dinner date was the incredibly patient and kind customer service at Sunset! My husband was on his way to meet me at Sunset, so I decided to just put our name down on the waiting list. The wait was supposed to be 40 minutes, but they ended up calling my name after only 20 minutes. I told them that my husband was still on his way and that I will let the next person take the table. The hostess insisted that I just take the table and not wait any additional time. I took the offer. I thoroughly enjoyed my pomegranate margarita until my husband showed up 30 minutes later. There was no rush or annoyance from the waitress' end. When he came, we ordered our nachos, wings, and chicken pita. Nachos with the pulled pork with slathered guacamole was delicious. We ordered the half plate and was more than enough. Wings with bones have lots of meat in it, which is always a plus. Can't go wrong with the chicken pita melt. Overall, we enjoyed our Friday date night at Sunset. Customers range from college students, young adults, and older folks. Expect there to be lots of drinking going around if you're there on a Friday night, which adds to the entertainment component for people watching. I would recommend to skip the beer here (even though they have their specials on personal pitcher for $5.99- it's bud lite or coors lite and super watered down). Instead, go with the tequila and margaritas offered at Sunset Cantina. If you want beer, better off going to Sunset tap and grill down the road. read more

Pretty good, I'd rate the nachos as 7/10.. not the best I've had but very good. They could use more cheese and a more even distribution of toppings. I'm a nacho connoisseur so a 7 is decent. The atmosphere is a 10/10... but bathrooms are kind of ratchet at a 2/10, honestly just hold it and hope for the best. I will come back but not for a first date. The nachos pictured are XXL size- good size but def more a 4 person serving. "XXL" is misleading for anyone who actually enjoys nachos (as I assume anyone ordering this size would). Why such a low rating then? Generally pretty ridiculously poor service. The last time i was here the thought "omg did you leave your brain at home today?" actually crossed my mind. I had ordered a bottle of wine (maybe that was my mistake to begin with, but I don't drink beer), and after about 15 min the server returned to let me know that they didn't have any chilled bottles and "it would be a little while longer." We had a company event at Sunset Cantina and everyone had a blast! I worked with Jessica weeks in advance to plan the food and drinks as well as the timing and even where the Karaoke DJ would unload and park. She couldn't have been any more responsive and attentive than she was. She always responded to my inquiries and concerns, and their online event management portal allowed for easy and convenient planning. During the event she was present and ready to facilitate anything that was needed. We had our own personal server, Sam, who worked tirelessly to tend to everyone's drink orders and put out the food. Everything went off without a hitch and the event was a huge success! We look forward to having more events like this in the future. I was pushing to try Sunset Cantina since it's several blocks from our apartment and have read online some amazing reviews for their west coast fish tacos. In the end, my husband gave in to my requests... I ordered the tacos, my mouth watering at the description and ready for some beachy amazingness. I'm regretting that now. The tacos were not what I expected. Tortillas were stale. Fish was decent in size but over-crusted. Shredded lettuce was wilted. The pico de gallo was too liquidy. The fries that came as a side were definitely not "Award Winning" as advertised on their menu. And to make matters worse, it gave me a bad stomachache... *groan* Never again. read more

Oh, blah. Sunset Cantina. There is literally nothing exciting about this restaurant. It serves a basic need -- close to the Paradise and Agannis Arena for pre-show dinner -- but it's frustrating that there isn't anything better in this block. The menu is basically the same as Sunset Grill (no surprise). The chips are the regular bulk purchase variety, the nachos are fine so long as you like lots of cheese and sour cream, and there's really no reason to purchase a main entree because you'll fill up on the disappointing appetizers. (Someone at our table ordered the artichoke spinach appetizer, and it was a plate of pita chips covered in melted cheese with the artichoke dip plopped on top. Did I eat it? Yes, because I needed to eat SOMETHING.) The margaritas are fine, so long as you don't mind lots of sour mix and unnecessary add-ins. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars over 1 star is because the bartender listened to my request for basic, no mix margarita, and he made one that wasn't on the menu. Not worth $10, but it tasted a lot better than the menu "Skinny Margarita" that I got later in the evening when I thought I was drunk enough to handle it. It was probably the worst drink I've ever had. Look, I LOVE TEX-MEX. This isn't it. It is a really sad attempt at tex-mex, but it's like they give zero shits about the food being appetizing because they know you're just going to drink a ton and go to a concert afterward anyway. Sunset Cantina is a must-visit if you are in the area. Do yourself a favor and get the south of the border pulled pork nachos - they are absolutely DIVINE. Tons of guac, sour cream, jalapeños. I've heard great things about the pulled pork quesadillas too. I'll be honest. Every so often, I'll order a XXL size plate o' nachos with no intention of finishing.. Then I'll ask for a to-go box, and the servers ALWAYS know to give two boxes (that's how gigantic the nachos are!!!). Then I walk home, keep the nachos on my desk... And feast on them for the rest of the week, every night. Yeah, the nachos are still fantastic a week later. IDGAF if you think I'm gross. I do this at least once a semester. I must admit, sometimes I come here in the afternoons and indulge in a little midday martini. A little pricey (meh, they're $8.99, I guess that's standard, I'm just being cheap) but worth it. I had the pulled pork quesadillas and it wasn't like bbq pulled pork. The meat was seasoned so perfectly. Reminded me of pernil ( pork shoulder) . Portions are perfect. My friend got the Cadillac fajitas . Came with chicken, shrimp and steak. All of which were seasoned perfectly. The guacamole was amazing. Even the black beans were fantastic! I am sorry, but burgers should come with fries, not potato chips. Potato chips are meant to be eaten from a bag, not at a restaurant. I understand you can get fries for extra, but I mean, please, does anyone actually want a burger with potato chips? Just raise the price to include the fries. This burger/ chips thing makes me crazy. I also do not find the food here to be that great but if you are in the area and want to hang out with your friends, have some beers and relax in a comfy booth and watch the game, it's all good. My opinion of the food improved a bit, however. I went here with my friends yesterday and the service was just alright. They used to serve fondue there...which was the only reason why we came...but we were disappointed. The fastest thing the waitress got us was our check. The tortellini, buffalo wings, and nachos were good though...but I didn't think they were mind blowing. I'm a fan of both Sunsets (Grill and Cantina) but Cantina ranks slightly higher in my opinion, because there restaurant doesn't get as drafty as the Grill. Both Sunsets have the same food menu. Be careful when you're inviting someone to dinner that doesn't know the area well. I've been in groups where someone has gone to the wrong Sunset before. Anyway, I had lunch at Sunset Cantina today and it was tasty. I was slightly disappointed that they don't have mashed potatoes until after 1 PM, but having sweet potato fries instead still made me happy. One of my favorite dishes to order is the Swordfish Skewers. TIP: If you only want 2 skewers, order the appetizer version of this dish. It's basically the same as the 2 skewer meal, but cheaper. There is also a 3 skewer option. My fiance is a fan of the Big Kahuna Tuna Melt with curly fries. Be sure to really read the menu before adding extras to your food. Adding tomatoes to your burger is an extra cost, as is upgrading your fries to sweet potato. read more

In the game of Sunset Cantina vs Sunset Tap & Grill, Cantina wins. Apparently they are owned by the same people and for the most part their atmosphere is very similar. After hanging out at the Cantina for a friend's birthday however, I realized how much more fun and how much better the food is at the Cantina location. They still have the great deals on their beer pitchers plus a much much bigger food menu and more importantly their nachos are 20x better than those at the Grill & Tap. Seriously, these nachos were great and fed at least 4 of us to a level where we were uncomfortably full. I gathered 5 other colleagues to order pick up with me today. Most of what we got were good but the waitress who took my order makes us not want to go back any more. My boss asked for Sun Dried Tomato vinaigrette dressing (she always gets it with her salad there), but got something more like Italian dressing, which completely ruined her appetite. I didn't get my side order of guacamole that I paid for. Neither is a deal breaker, I just wanted to let them know the mistakes so I called back. The waitress still sounded she could care less (like when she took my order), she insisted that's the correct dressing, and just said "oh sorry" about me not getting the guac. Unpleasant experience. For the past three years, I have been coming to this place consistently and every time, I am unsatisfied with their service, but I keep coming back for the nachos and decent drinks. Maybe it's because most of the workers are college students or graduates trying to make a quick buck, but the service is really not that great. You can tell the waiters are trying their best and are usually friendly, but they are never around when you need them and they don't know much about the drinks/menu. It's so hard to find them when you need them and they tend to forget simple things especially when it gets busy. Drinks here are not always consistent either. Yes, there are a ton of alcohol choices from beers to wine and mixed drinks, but each time has been a different experience. On some days the drinks are watered down, sometimes too strong and other times it just tastes BAD. It's like a russian roulette. The only thing that makes me come back is the famous nachos and mudslide pie. Everything on the menu is pretty decent, but you won't find a better nacho place in Boston. They stack it high and smother it in all the different toppings (guac, sour cream, cheese, jalapeños, pulled pork, salsa). It's cheap and it def fills you up! Really, 3.5 stars? Whatever. This place has a ton of tequila and a huge beer list. Automatic five stars, obvi. Now that I have your attention: the portions here are preeeeeetty large. If you're not that hungry, order the smallest size (like, half-size for the nachos). They have food for vegetarians and meat eaters. Did I mention lots of tequila and beer? Oh, ok. My friend ordered their potato skins as an app. There were four pieces, but they were literally loaded potato skins. I mean like, all the toppings. I had their cod sandwich, which was really filling. Just when I think the art of making proper French fries is a dying skill, a talent lost somewhere in the days of freshly grilled burgers at McDonald's and American owned Budweiser, along comes a fry cook who knows the secret. The sour cream and chive fries at Sunset Cantina are all by themselves worth a visit to this lively restaurant. They are crisp, golden wonderful little curlycues of potato (paging Dan Quayle) goodness. They are served with a little side of ranch dressing which works well to counterbalance the fries' salty, chivy seasoning, and it takes considerable will power not to inhale the entire order by yourself. I first had the fries at the original Boston Beerworks the first year they opened. It was the same recipe, except that the fries at Sunset, both the Cantina and the original grill up the street, are curly where the ones at Beerworks were cut straight. In fact, as I was reminded by our friendly, attentive waiter, the owner of the Sunset Cantina and Sunset Grill, used to be one of the original owners of the Beerworks. The effect is apparent. Both Sunset locations still have great food, while the Beerworks has lost its way. The fries at Beerworks are terrible, and in my opinion whoever is in charge of the food there needs to be sent to the culinary equivalent of Siberia. Thank the Fryolator gods for Sunset Cantina. Okay, history lesson over. I should mention that Sunset Cantina also has a fine selection of tap beers, about a million kinds of tequila, and just the right amount of Americana and brewery kitsch to put you in the mood to raise a pint and chow down. One disappointment was the atomic wings. A long time ago, these fiery appetizers, were the literally the hottest in Boston, painful enough to send Adam Richman screaming to his mommy and a pint of milk. Now, well, c'est la vie. My twelve year old son, polished off half the plate without breaking a sweat, then looked at me and said,"Those really aren't that hot, Dad." Atomic? Come on, guys. I'm throwing down the gauntlet. The service was fast, especially for a Friday, albeit early, night, and there was only one other slip up. They ran out of Guinness... in Boston. There was a time when such a failure would constitute a prosecutable offense in this town. Ah, no longer. (Sorry, more history.) Anyway, go to Sunset Cantina, and have the fries. Enjoy. read more

I came here before a Boston University Terriers ice hockey game (Go Terriers!). This place is right across the street from the arena, so it is very easy to come to through the B line, which is what I did. That said, I can't speak for the parking situation. When I arrived, my party was informed that the wait was about 30 mins. It was busy as expected for a Friday night. Luckily, we were seated in 20 mins. I don't know about you, but I certainly appreciate when the wait times are not longer than advertised. I ordered Bud Light on tap because I clearly have horrible taste in beer, and they were out of that. So I settled with Miller Lite, the next worst beer on their menu. Great. We ordered a small plate of Chicken Fiesta Nachos to split between the two of us, and it was more than enough. The portions are rumored to be huge here, and I decided to be wise and order the small. It was the correct decision. The jalapeños were ridiculously hot. I had two pieces, and that was enough for me to be worried about my bowel movement the next day. The service was quite slow, but understandable as the bar was very busy that night. Overall, Sunset Cantina is a cool place to grab some cheap beer and cheap nachos, before the game, before the show, before class, whatever. Totally recommend. read more

Okay wow the portions are HUGE here. Not gonna lie, I was pretty full off of sharing a 1/2 order of nachos. And like everyone else is saying, the nachos are freakin delicious. It comes with guac, sour cream, cheese, chili, jalapenos, and some salsa on the side. The chili is sandwiched in the middle of the nachos and towards the end of the plate some chips are basically drenched in the chili sauce and it's SO GOOD. We also had the avocado chicken meltdown which was delicious as well. Once again the portions are huge and I could only eat a fourth of the sandwich after the nachos. They are generous with the avocado on this sandwich and they have this ranch sauce on the side that's really good too. For drinks I had the pomegranate frozen margarita which was good also. A bit tart and and a bit sweet with just a hint of tequila flavor. All in all, not a bad place to come pig out and have a couple drinks. read more

These three stars are for the nachos and the service. Both were phenomenal. However, my enchiladas had no flavor. The rice tastes like 90 second microwave rice and as an avid enchilada lover they were inedible. I have never had to send a food item back before. My boyfriends fajitas were also tiny and did not even come close to filling up the skillet. He was still hungry when he finished. Although my main course was horrible the nachos we got as an appetizer were delicious. I recommend just coming for nachos and drinks. Has the same menu as the Sunset Grill (except the original place has millions of beer, and this place has millions of margaritas), which is good- Sunset food is good (especially their coconut chicken) The space is so much bigger. It's not as damn crowded and loud as the Sunset grill. I mean, I don't mind the loudness of the SG, but sometimes just can't stand yellling over music. At least time times I've been to the SC, the music wasn't so damn loud. Just know that their nachos portions are HUUUUUGE. If you want extra large, unless you're disgusting and 1,000 pounds, you'll never be able to eat it all. even the smaller size is HUUUUUUUGE. So. Order carefully. I did not realize this when I came to this location, and was sorely disappointed when Sunset Cantina only has 38 beers on tap as opposed to the 100+ at Sunset Grill and Tap. On top of that, they were out of my favorite Sea Dog Blueberry. The nachos, while burnt on the edges, was still pretty good and probably the best in Boston. I love that it comes with guacamole and sour cream. Service was a little laggy despite the venue being half empty. However, I noticed that a lot of people were drinking margaritas, tequila, and cocktails. So if you are not much of a beer person, then you might prefer this location. In terms of food, I think it was about the same. Chicken wings were great, nachos were stacked pretty well, and their chicken pita melt was on point. Just like I noted in my review of Sunset Grill, this place gets very pricey. Expect to drop at least $40-50 for a few plates of food and drinks. I am a huge sunset fan and I'm actually surprised at some of the reviews. I have never had a bad meal there. I've tried the nachos (which are massive and enough to share with a table of 5 or more people), had the wings, tried the ribs, and tonight I had the BBQ pulled pork potato skins. All were good. The margaritas are even better. The last time I was there I switched it up and got a blackberry cider which pleasantly surprised me. The only reason why sunset gets knocked down a peg in my book is for the service. Tonight my waiter was attentive, respectful, and very nice...but this is not the norm. I'm convinced all the servers are students who just don't care. One time three friends and I waited for our bill for a half hour. Another time I went, we couldn't find our waiter for almost a half hour to order another round of drinks. When one of my friends got sick of waiting she went to find him and found him flirting with a waitress near the computer. Still, another time the wait for a drink was so long I was ordering a margarita and a back up margarita at the same time. Definitely need more staff on the weekends or just a more enthusiastic waitstaff in general. Other than that I will definitely be returning if not for the service for the food.
