Went to Sunset Cantina last night before we made our way to the House of Blues for a concert. Unfortunately, the experience was less than ideal which is a shame because Sunset used to be quite good. We sat at the bar and were promptly handed menus but were not asked if we would like anything to drink. About 10 minutes went by until we finally had to flag down a bartender to place our drink and food order at the same time. The restaurant was not even close to being busy and the bartenders seemed more concerned about changing kegs and pouring out beer than they were at serving customers. A customer next to us asked what the "Bartender's Special" drink entailed and the bartender basically said it was whatever they wanted but gave no insight; very odd. The soda was visibly flat when served to us and no offer of a refill was made at any time. When we ordered, food came out about 3 minutes after we ordered but we then realized that it was not for us and was for another couple down the other end of the bar. The food was pretty good and was served quickly and was piping hot. I opted for the coconut chicken burrito which had a good mango salsa and chili sauce both inside and on the side but a side of tortilla chips or something to go with it would have been nice. My wife had the burrito bowl salad which was pretty loaded and featured a spicy, blackened chicken within it. The food was the star of the visit but the staff really needed a tutorial in customer service and being pleasant. The unfortunate service was a black eye on the restaurant and was bad enough to make you not want to go back there. Hopefully they get their act together soon. read more

My friend and I had a really negative experience at this establishment regarding their ID scanner in which they were attempting to say our out-of-state state-issued driver's license was fake. With this, the manager intended to keep the IDs and refused to return them until authorities arrived to verify their legitimacy. We did not mind waiting since we knew they were legit but in the end, the bouncer reran them a few more times and they came up as real so they eventually returned them back to us before authorities arrived. Though the incident ended with us getting our IDs back, the situation was handled with a lot of attitude and aggression. Came here on a sunny Wednesday for a business lunch. The benches outside were a nice touch and enabled me to wait for the other member of my party and grab them as they went in. The inside is huge - much bigger than I expected as I walked by -- and has a warm, inviting, if generic decor. It was cool and a bit dark inside, but not so dark that we couldn't see -- a nice anecdote to the warm day outside. The server was friendly and attentive without interrupting, and the service time was fast. We ordered the cubano and avocado salad, and both were done well, above average, and without pretension. My constant refrain on Yelp is for restaurants to nail the basics and this one has done it. I'd gladly come back here again and I'd recommend it to anybody looking for a casual lunch or a cozy dinner for personal or business reasons. read more

Let me make it clear. I am not rating my review based on food. I recently visited this place. Food was descent. We were two people visiting this place. When we asked for cheque there was already high percentage of service charge added to the bill. When I asked what this charge is for, the server apologised and revised the amount without service charged. I feel this was not by mistake. It was intentional. This is absolutely fraud. What is there NOT to love about Sunset Cantina? It's the hottest spot for college kids around, but nonetheless, there's cheap booze and food. I came here to grab dinner but I mainly came for the nachos. We decided to just stick with the nachos because it just so much food for two people. I loved everything about it. The portion and the toppings. They give you so much here, it seems like it's never going to end. We decided to add pulled pork onto our nachos - best thing ever! The meat was so tender and flavorful, and they give you A LOT for $4 extra. The chips are fresh and every bite, it's filled with guac, jalapenos, sour cream, lettuce, salsa, and cheese. But it was the best ever, this was recommended by a BU alumn. The ribs really do fall of the bone, no joke. The corn bread tastes like something I would eat in my Salvadorean home with hot coffee. It tastes like a pastry since it has a sweet glaze over it. He quesadillas are filled with cheese. They did not skimp. I was so pleasantly surprised! There's not many places that have ensure that the food satisfies with the ingredients, portions, and the taste. Maybe one of the worst places in all of Boston to go to for a taco Tuesday. I showed up to blaring music and a DJ who provided better service than the staff. My waitress made me feel like I was a homeless person in a public park, "just avoid eye contact." Our group ordered margs, and once I tasted it, I knew why there was a $5 special on them, less liquor than Sunday morning Mormon service. This was my first time at this establishment, the food, drinks, and service were great. After we left my friend realized he forgot his phone in the restaurant, so we walked back and were told "no ones seen anything" by all the staff we dealt with while dining. After some searching outside we went back in and LIED to the manager about seeing it on the Find My iPhone app. less than a minute after that, the manager comes back with my friend's phone out of the kitchen. Oh Sunset. I spent so many nights here during my time at BU, and it's still one of my favorite places to visit whenever I come back. Like many of the reviewers here, I didn't quite believe it when everyone told me the renovations and new management had changed Sunset until I visited this past weekend. It mostly looks the same on the inside, but we could definitely feel the difference. Instead of a huge menu of margs, there's maybe 6 you can choose from. We weren't asked if we wanted salt or sugar (neither came on our drinks), frozen or rocks, and they were served in pint glasses, which was a bit disappointing. The enormous portion sizes are still there, at least. We got the smallest portion of the nachos (still more than two people can comfortably consume) with pulled pork. The pork, which used to be my favorite part, was super dry and salty. No more sauce sadly, although the nachos were otherwise the same pile of delicious cheesy calories. We also tried the fish tacos (ordered fried and got grilled fish) with fries, which were just fine. I'd still probably stop by when I'm in town (I can never turn down those nachos), but pour a marg out for the old Sunset! read more

We are both vegans and had read the reviews from other vegans on Yelp which helped us order We decided to go with the full size of nachos having them put the vegetable chili/ veg as a topping as one Yelper suggested It was really huge, like, HUGE and that was great. I really enjoyed it. The server was really flexible and said yes to any substitution we made. I did read on another vegan's review that the guacamole has dairy in it and they did put that on top of our nachos (the server probably wasn't aware) so we removed it ourselves. -(Unless the guacamole is now dairy free (I'd like to know) the servers should probably be aware since I'm sure many vegans go here) We also got some waffle fries in a basket, again, big portion. Delicious. I got a salad- it wasn't fresh and I wouldn't order another here (I should have known better, it's a bar type atmosphere) My boyfriend got the veggie burger with spicy waffle fries. When I got my Steak tacos they were cold and didn't come with lettuce, melted cheese, salsa, or guac. When I asked our waitress for my missing ingredients, she kindly explained that they no longer served cheese with their tacos and promised to bring some guac. 15 minutes later I was given a tiny container of gauc to share with my friend (she was also stiffed on her guac). My local friends prefer dining at Sunset Grille, because beer, and many, many choices. You're a bit more limited here - something like "only" 38 drafts available, but it's probably still more than most pubs can offer. But if you're going to be on Commonwealth Ave. anyway - as we were - it's better than nothing - a LOT better than nothing. The ambiance is much less hectic, a bit more relaxed. Service was fun, fine, and fast. Then there is the beer, of course. Plus this is someplace along the stretch where I can get something other than fries with a meal. What impressed me the most was actually the portion sizes of the meals we ordered. My chicken tacos came out with all the fixin's on the plate and just the meat in the 2 tacos. My first thought was, "Only 2 tacos," but then I opened them to find just how much chicken was in each, nicely spiced. I also got to sample the coconut fried chicken on someone else's salad. The salad had 3 huge "fingers" worth of chicken on a bed of lots of salad stuff. My one complaint, and it's minor, is that my side of cranberry cole slaw (which I like a lot) was not as generous as it appeared, because it was presented on top of a leaf of kale. I would have been equally satisfied to have the kale steamed or marinated as an accompaniment to the cole slaw (or more cole slaw, of course). We actually used an Entertainment Book coupon as the lure to come here for the first time. It won't be necessary to use them to get us back, and we will be back! read more

My team ordered for delivery today via Foodler and one of the orders was a half pound is swordfish. When it arrived we got 4 pieces of fish the size of fortune cookies, a thin slice of watermelon and a leaf. We called the store first and they first disputed that they even have this option on the menu, then they hung up on us after we said we have weighed the food to be 3 ounces. There is barely any Mexican food on the menu anymore. The window said there were enchiladas but there are none on the menu and the server said they don't even have the sauces to make one. There is no queso on the appetizers menu, and the basic chips and salsa is $4. Meanwhile, "Fish and Chips" is an available option. There's also a BBQ pulled pork sandwich. The bad reviews below are kinda crazy. Really!? The food here is awesome, especially the nachos! The best nachos in town, man. So are the quesadillas. The fry-up fries are a little salty but tasty at the same time. It's like eating a giant bag of sour cream and onion chips. Good right? :) Let me elaborate a little more. The customer service here is authentic, and they really take care of you. Have a question? No problem. Need to modify something on your order? No problem. Want the manager to give you his best opinion about which tequila is good to just relax and sip on? No problem. My husband just got a new job, and a few friends and I were celebrating with him. His best friend wanted the manager's opinion on the best tequila, and he came right over, sat down with them and gave his best opinions and reasons behind them. That's an example of exemplary customer service to me. Our waitress, Cathy Lee, was also extremely attentive, answered all our questions, and took really good care of us while we got fat on nachos, fries, jambalaya, quesadillas, beer, tequila, and cider.
