Wow this was in 2024! My dog is very much alive and doing wonderful! She is completely back to herself minus a little arthritis due to old age (coming up on 16). This is the first negative Google review I've ever felt STRONGLY deserved it. If zero stars were an option, that's what I would give. I have a very small 8lbs, anxious dog who does not do well in kennels. I had previously explained this to them. He is a rescue that was previously abused and kennels are one of the triggers that cause him extreme panic. I scheduled his 1st dental cleaning and was instructed to drop him off at 7:30 AM. The procedure was supposed to take only a few hours, so I called at 12:30PM expecting he would be recovering after his procedure. Instead, I learned they hadn't even started- he had been sitting in a kennel for five+ hrs, unfed and without any water since 5PM the prior evening due to the mandatory fasting protocol involving general anesthesia. Their policy is to take in all dental cleaning appointments at 7:30am. This was never communicated to me as I would have never agreed to bring my dog here knowing his terror of being lock in a kennel. I was under the impression that 7:30am was the time slot that I secured for my dog's $600+ procedure. Anyone who owns a pet knows dental cleanings aren't cheap, and this approach makes it clear they're prioritizing volume and profit over the well-being of your pet. Reader, ask yourself this: when was the last time you arrived for a scheduled procedure involving general anesthesia, only to sit around for five+ hours- fasted-while multiple other patients were lined up ahead of you? Never. It's unacceptable and unethical. This practice shows they are overbooking for profit and crowding their schedule at the expense of the pets in their care. There is NO reason not to stagger the appointments. The cherry on top: Phone Call with Manager Renee Carroll When I called at 12:30pm to get an update on my dog, the office manager, Renee Carroll, was incredibly rude, unprofessional, and emotionally unintelligent. She repeatedly cut me off while I was speaking, showed zero empathy for the deep concern I had for my dog, and responded to my concerns by snapping, "Well, do you want to come get him then?"- this was said right after she informed me they were now placing his catheter (around 12:45 pm). She accused me of not telling them my dog was anxious of which I have been very vocal about. Additionally, I had my dog's medical records forwarded to their practice for this procedure which clearly outlines the prescriptions he is prescribed for anxiety. Renee's behavior was unbelievably unprofessional that one of the drs. had to take the phone from her to continue the conversation. Renee offered to send me a video of my dog and I agreed and told her that would be appreciated. I received 2 photos and they were of him being held by a vet tech outside of the kennel. Of course they didn't want to show me what he was like from inside the kennel because he was in pure panic. A note to the sunset valley team: I urge you to listen to the phone calls. There were two, one with vet tech Abigail and one with your office manager Renee. I hope they serve your team as moments of self reflection on how not to treat someone who is calling in worried about their pet that suffers from high anxiety who's been confined to a kennel for 5+ hrs and forced to fast for 20 hours. The way this situation was handled left me questioning the ethics of their practice. Additionally, Renee does not deserve to be in a position where she is communicating pet care to pet owners. She made this situation 10X worse and should not work here. I am willing to bet I am not the first person who has made a complaint about her. Again, I urge you to listen to the phone calls, and while you're at it, please send me a copy- I'd like to have a copy as well. Trusting someone with your pet is a decision we as pet parents take seriously. Save yourself the worry and go somewhere where the at wellbeing of your pet is top priority, and not the profitability of their practice. read more

Dr. Portie performed my Archie's neuter surgery, & made himself available right away to see Archie in-person when Archie had a bad reaction to the surgery (which is resolved / Archie is fine!). Dr. Portie cares a ton, has a hyper-level attention to details, plus the tenure, top education & knowledge that make him a well-respected, bonafide expert in his field, and the best vet (care) an average peasant like me can get! We were faced with an emergency that had to be addressed immediately and they were the first ones to accept us after calling 7 different vets around South Austin. We showed up at 4:30 pm they quickly took our 13 year old dog in and had to sedate her to give her 7-8 stitches they told us to return by 6 and lily our dog was ready for us to pick up. She was a bit groggy but that was expected. Without them taking us so late in the day we don't know what the outcome would have been for our old lady Lily. I am extremely disappointed with Sunset Canyon Vet and will not be returning. Over the past three visits, I've had to wait between 30 and 60 minutes for scheduled services, which shows a complete disregard for clients' time. Yesterday was the tipping point: after waiting 45 minutes to have my dog's nails clipped, I was told they couldn't perform the service because my dog's rabies vaccination was out of date--a detail they could have easily checked beforehand. Then today, I was just 10 minutes late for my appointment and was told they would treat us as a "walk-in" because we were late, and that my spot was lost due to someone else coming in at 5 p.m. The lack of communication and respect is unacceptable. I would not recommend this clinic to anyone who values their time and expects professional service. read more

I've had two fantastic experiences, which more than justifies a quick Yelp review. Both cases were urgent for our four legged idiots that are technically dogs, but are treated better than most humans. In both cases, there was almost zero wait to get in. Their Covid protocols are sensible and incredibly accommodating (they were at my car with masks on before I even had time to call and let them know I was there). Additionally, the two different doctors that I dealt with took the time to thoroughly explain the situation and what my options were; elaborating on the pros and cons of each. We have been so happy with Sunset Canyon and Dr. Portie for our almost 10 year old golden retriever, Stella, ever since we moved out this way and had to find a new vet. Dr. Portie is so great with her, gets down on her level, and makes the whole experience comfortable for her. He doesn't push for unnecessary tests. You can tell he just loves dogs - particularly goldens. He said he's had 9 of his own! And at our most recent visit, my husband brought our 3 year old daughter along, and Dr. Portie was so kind to her, let her listen to Stella's heart with his stethoscope and even let her help administer Stella's shot. I used to rave about this vet to anyone we knew but a few months ago we took our 10 month old dog in to get a vaccine & I asked if they could trim his nails. They were unable to cut his nails because of his "behavior". He doesn't like his feet being touched and I told the vet tech that. When they brought him back to me (first mistake, they didn't put me in a private room, i was told to wait outside and they took him inside) when they brought him back he immediately dodged his head from me petting it which isn't like him. All they as in the vet techs told me was he was hard to handle. Fast forward to 10pm that night the white of his eyes turned red/purple. Immediately go back to the vet and one veterinarian said "I wasn't there but I heard he alligator rolled and hit his head" So why was this information not shared with the owners right then and there? We were told it would heal in a couple of days but it took 2+ weeks to return fully back to white. I'm utterly flabbergasted that that information was withheld. We will unfortunately not be returning. Please treat every one of your patients with no time limit and stop rushing patients in and out like a drive through. read more

Wish I could give more than 5 stars! Extremely happy with everything about this Vet Clinic. My dog's teeth were nasty - called the place right by my house and they said $1,000 for a teeth cleaning. I was like "what?! who pays that?!". My friend Whitney works at Sunset Canyon so I called there and they said $200!!! Showed up with my dog, Margo Rita, and asked if they could also cut her nails. Not only did they do an amazing job on her teeth (I'm shocked by how white they are), and her nails, they also plucked a ton of hairs out her ears! We normally shave her ourselves, and she doesn't really like her ears being touched, so it was greatly needed. Even though I forgot to mention it, they saw that it was needed and did it. I took my dog here on recommendation of a friend after having gone to multiple vets for years with no solutions for my chihuahua's gastro issues. Thousands of dollars spent to no avail. SCVC was able to get me in the same day (amazing!). My friend recommended Dr. Portie to me. He was very thorough in explaining what could possibly be going on with my Chi as well as offering a treatment option that hadn't been suggested yet. Dr. P followed up with me later that week to see how Lily was doing. A few months later I had to get her in again for more treatments and was able to get in right away. The entire staff here is lovely and wonderful to work with! The establishment is clean and has a welcoming feel. I just love everything about this place and I love Dr. Portie! I've heard the rest of the vets here are also wonderful. This is the vet I have been looking for all of my life!! They helped save one of my dogs and the other senior dog is like a new puppy now and the rates are reasonable. One of my dogs ended up having pancreatic and liver issues. He needed to be at a vet hospital in ICU. But I knew that would be really expensive and on the older side. So I asked if they could just give fluids and meds each day. I would drop him off in the morning and pick him up at night. Did this for a week. He made a complete turn around. My senior dog I thought was going blind and was not eating much. I was told from many people not to get their teeth pulled when they are old. However, I felt like I needed to do something for him. Sunset Canyon recommended pulling out his teeth because they were infected. I was given quotes by other places and they were a lot higher than Sunset Canyon. I told them what I could afford and they kept in around that price. My senior dog now is running around like a puppy and his vision has been restored. The teeth infection was going into his eyes. Specifically, a year ago this month, one of my dogs mauled the other one. It was a difficult decision to put the dog who mauled down, and it's been an intense experience caring for the dog who was mauled. Several of the vets have been helpful during this time, but most of all Erin West has done so much to take such great care of Sophie! We know of no other vet clinics who will spay female pigs near us, but we hope to never need this again since they are all spayed now.
