We're very lucky to have Sunset Clips here--a vestige of "classic OB" with a relaxing, unpretentious ambiance, good tunes, and good people running the show. I just got my ears lowered by Kelly (name?) who's an absolute gem and a true OB spirit. I've also had trims from Kris, who's equally talented and nice. And years ago randomly had a convo with the owner atop a local brewery, which I haven't forgotten all these years later. Suffice to say, this is a place where you want to spend your money. This is the best place for a men's hair cut that I have found in San Diego! (And I have been to a lot of places ) Both waiting areas are ideal with an ocean breeze. The outside area is spacious the inside is cozy. Holly is great and will cut your hair exactly as you describe or show her. I've been stoked with the last 3 cuts she's given me. The first two I described and she did not disappoint and the last cut she matched the picture I showed her perfectly with great suggestions for the portions of the hair cut not shown in the picture. I couldn't be happier with finding this place. Let me just say, Whitney B. is AMAZING! I cannot recommend her enough. I showed up for the first time wanting to make a big change and was a bit nervous and Whitney took the time to listen to every detail, reassure me, hype me up and NAILED everything! She did amazing with my cut/color and was incredibly sweet and kind as a person. She even listened and followed all the military regulations that my hair has to follow to a T. Holly is the only hair dresser I've returned to since moving here in 2017. Prices are really reasonable- even for women- and she's great at doing whatever you ask her to do. The place isn't stuffy or "high end" but that's not a bad thing. Parking can be a bit of a pain, but that's just part of OB. My cut isn't too complicated, but my hair can be and Holly did a good job. I trust her enough at this point that I might just come back for simple highlights- The rest of the staff all seemed just as nice, and very accommodating for walk-ins. It's much more family friendly than most of the salons I've gone to in the past, which is a testament to the affordability. Like I said- she's the only person I've allowed to cut my hair more than once since we moved to San Diego. read more

I found this place online and called 5 minutes after they opened for the day to book an appointment. They were able to get me in that same day in 2 hours, which was awesome! After arriving at the shop and waiting only 5-10 minutes, Eric took me in. He asked me what I wanted and I told him specifically what I was looking for. After that, he locked in for the next 30-40 minutes and took his time to cut my hair in great detail. I never had someone cut my hair in as much detail as Eric did, and I could tell he was taking his time to make sure he did his best. I was very satisfied with my haircut! The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars was because I left the shop with hair all over my face, neck, and shirt. Not a big deal, but it did require me to clean up upon arriving at home. read more

I am always apprehensive to get a haircut at new places as I typically only get my hair done by my best friend in New York but your girl was in need. It had been since August. Kelly was not only a sweetheart but did a great job. I have long hair and all my layers were grown out. She gave me layers and a beautiful angel around my face. Awesome shop, catchy name, great vibes. Jason cuts some good hair and knows how to make you feel like an old friend. Always asks what the cut is going to be rather than just going to work, always a plus - but shocking more that he probably does remember every cut for all his clients. Great location on the corner, and always parking nearby. If not right out front, just park down the street, enjoy a stroll, grab a coffee, come in and chill. Comfy seats in the waiting area make you feel like you're at your buddy's house just waiting to go hang out. Never have I ever left the salon with soggy wet hair til I went to this place. I would expect that from a barber or a $20 haircut place. Paying more tha $60 for a haircut I would assume it would include a haircut with wash and blow dry but they wanted to charge an extra $25 for a quick blow dry! Left the salon with decent haircut but wasn't able to see the actual style until it airdried which by that time I had already left the salon. I wish I had a better experience, I was so excited to try out a new place since the reviews were so wonderful. Sorry but I don't be back. read more

Nice employees. Went in for a trim and for a bang trim. My bangs were cut at a weird angle, making them uneven (one side is shorter than the other). Can't tell when you swipe them to the side, but if I try to wear them how they're supposed to be Looks like my 2 year old did it for me. Very uneven. read more

The first time I went in here, I got a haircut by Kelly and she was amazing. Again this time I went in and she amazed me with how she was patient with a crying toddler who needed a haircut because of non purposeful dread that was forming. Cut the kids' hair while he was screaming in moms' lap. However, when I walked in, the woman was waiting for her child's turn to get his haircut and was being panhandled inside by a nomadic individual who was white. I myself am half black and half white. As I walked in, a man named Michael who was in the middle of cutting someone's hair, walked up to me, ignoring the panhandler, and said to me "can I help you" while standing pretty much in my face. I almost walked out right then, but needed a haircut so stayed hoping for Kelly's chair to come open. Instead a guy with an appointment came in and took her chair. As Michael finished his haircut, he proceeded to clean the hair up, and it was almost 10 minutes of waiting until he finally said I could get in his chair, and that he thought Kelly's chair was going to be open (to this I say yea right). I pointed out the elephant in the room and told him straight up that he made me wait because I am black and I laughed with disdain. He proceeded to state that his father was racist, and that his son was probably less prejudiced than Michael was. He said that he was prejudiced against white supremacists and believed the stereotype that all Asians can't drive. He kept on in saying there was one black kid at his high school growing up (he's in his 60's), and that the guy was an athlete. He stereotyped that the only reason he would want to be black is for their athleticism. I told him that if he was exposed to persons of color personally, he might learn about them and their culture, and potentially lose his prejudices. The haircut was worth maybe a Supercuts $12 but not the $20 and $4 tip I gave him. He seemed to appreciate the convo and the "cash" as he said, but he was ignorant about how he treated me, which is why this yelp review, and I will make it a point to go back in and tell Kelly about what I experienced, since I stay in OB. Wake up and get to know peeps who don't look like you please, otherwise this white supremacy and or BS facade of domination will continue to pervade the human race. read more
