My favorite little grocery store. I know they can be more expensive than some others, but their food is fresh and they have all I need. I appreciate the smaller size because I can get in and out in less than 10 minutes easily. Their cashiers are well stocked, so you never get caught in a long line. They also have my favorite prepared foods selection of any grocery store. My one big complaint is their new hours. I often get off work late, which has became an issue now that they close by 8 every night. read more

I am writing this hoping that Management will see it. I live in Long Grove, and work in Lake Bluff. I have the good fortune of being able to shop at the Lake Forest Sunset, which seems smaller than the Long Grove store, but the difference in service is night and day, repeatedly. At the Lake Forest store, I feel like folks are there to help. At the Long Grove store, I feel like I am not valued or welcome. Trying to find somebody to ask a question can be a challenge. A few weeks back I just walked up to the Customer Service counter and the woman literally snapped at me. Perhaps working in a new store is very stressful, but it says a lot that I won't do my big weekend shopping at Sunset in Long Grove. It's just not a welcoming place, at all. read more

They has stuff that was on sale in the newspaper and did not have it in stock but gave a raincheck. I went back in 4 days to pick it up and they were out of it again. I took the same product but a larger size and they would not match the sale price (per unit) even though the store coordinator (Mitch) recognized me with my raincheck tag. Why put an ad when you do not plan to keep stock. It happened twice so I would guess that is just a way to get people on the store and not honor the sale.....just like car dealers do. read more

I am giving Sunset a 5 because nowhere else do I shop with a smile all the time. Yes, they are the best with customer service and no they aren't always the least expensive. When you look at the selection of local brands and specialty items you realize how they are stretching to reach everyone and help the community at the same time. And yes you must always check the expiration dates...how many times has Jewel or Mariano's had expired or moldy food out. At least at Sunset if they have a problem or are out of an item, they bend over backwards to make sure you are taken care of. On average they are way above average! Superior. I like cannoli's and usually if your store is going to have its own pastry section selling cannoli's, one would imagine that you actually make them yourself. Especially if your are going to charge nearly $4 for one. But Sunset doesn't think that that should be the case. Which is why the cannoli I bought the other day was not fully filled with ricotta and why for some reason it had walnuts that were DYED GREEN instead of pistachios. I brought this to their attention and they said,"we ask if you want nuts or chocolate." I tried to point out how that statement doesn't point out the fact that there are walnuts instead of pistachios. But the bakery lady was flippant and said that they always used colored nuts. I tried to point out how there are differences in legume allergies (this is what peanuts and pistachios cause) and nut allergies (those caused by true nuts), but she didn't care. Bottom line: If you want people that take pride in their work, go to Mariano's. If you don't mind being treated like dirt then sunset is your grocery store. read more

I live a bit north of here and usually shop at Mariano's in Libertyville. I stopped here on the way home to get a few things. more than half the produce I looked at was spoiled, moldy or bruised. I noticed that several dairy items were out of date. For the premium prices they charge, I would have expected quality items. In summary, Walmart quality (maybe worse) at boutique prices. read more

This place is incredible! I came in here on a whim when it opened and was astonished at the very fair prices that compare to other major chain grocery stores in the area. There is very little pretentiousness here and the pastry section is unbelievable! The chocolate croissants are about a dollar and are better than anything you would get at Starbucks or some other coffee shop, and they sell mini bagels for 35 cents a piece!! There is also a vast meat section that has exceptional cuts of meat that I yearn to afford, but although some prices might be high (especially if you're looking for meat, seafood, cheese, and fresh bread), you're paying for high-quality, exquisite food. I shopped at this store this evening. I normally shop at other Sunset Food stores. This comment applies to the various stores including the Long Grove Store where I shopped this evening You hire teenagers as baggers. They are careless and reckless regarding paying attention to the way they pack one's shopping bags. I came with three shopping bags (one was insulated. The bagger just dumped the groceries in the bags without paying attention. An insulated bag is meant to keep items in certain temperature). These young guys fail in their job either because they don't care, not taught/trained or not supervised. I bought dairy / fish / meat, my fresh veggies were put in this bag. Nice hometown grocery store . Reminds me of a neighborhood grocery store from when I was a kid that is trying to keep.up with its neighbors , mariano's and whole foods. The organic section is nice but small. The prices are very comparable to the other stores in the area which is remarkable for its size. The flower department I believe is top notch and better than the rest. The flowers I buy always last very long and I feel like I get twice the time of them than the places. The deli is very nice and offers a wide range of things. There is even an upstairs area to relax. read more

Love this place - we've been waiting forever to get a Sunset in the area. Before they even decided to build, it was on our wish list - WHY OH WHY CAN't WE HAVE OUR OWN SUNSET?? Great specialty foods, yes, sometimes pricier, but they are SO good. The hamburgers to die for, the lunchmeats great - Boars Head! Cheeses, wow, Oh, and their salad bar is reasonable and there's enough on it to make a dinner - some tuna, some chicken, homemade quacamole. Amazing store, with an absolutely delightful staff. The service is great, I love how they unload my cart for me and I've never had to wait in line. They see their customers and automatically go to help them. This is truly a grocery store that wants to keep it's clients. I stopped in with my two children to let them each pick out a donut. Their donuts are good, but overpriced at $1.99 for a yellow cake chocolate iced donut & $2.49 for their blueberry crumb donut. My disappointment was after each child picked out their donut there was a table nearby where an employee named Elyse was giving shoppers a sample of champagne & cheese for the holiday. My children saw the table and asked if they could have a napkin. I came up to the table and there was a stack of black beverage napkins and I took 2 and gave to my children. The employee however did not like that I took 2 napkins and said those are for the guests eating cheese and proceeded to take the napkins back from my children and replace them with 2 brown folded napkins very similar to the recycled paper from a bathroom dispenser. I said you're being cheap and very picky! She then looked at me appalled that I said something to her and as LOUD as she could possibly be says "HOW DARE YOU TALK TO ME LIKE THAT AND IN FRONT OF YOUR CHILDREN. As I was walking to the check out she continued to follow me and say HOW DARE YOU TALK TO ME LIKE THAT AND IN FRONT OF YOUR CHILDREN. It was like she was trying to get me to argue with her. I then asked to see a Manager, which was already coming to the scene as you could probably here this employee from 3-4 aisles away. Several shoppers were stopping to see what was going on and I was just trying to get away from her as I did not want my children to be exposed to someone that was hysterical or under the influence. I told the Manager this was so unprofessional and I will take my business to another grocer in the future. Wow! If I had the dough to live in Long Grove, this would be the only place I'd shop. They carry so many luxury items that its almost overwhelming - if you can afford the price of dinner at Morton's, then this place will fix you up with the same stuff to eat at home (for about the same cost, though). this is a place that has great customer service. employees go the extra mile - they smile, are helpful, and look like they actually want to be there.. it's not so much that the produce is amazing or the chicken is magical but you want to come back because you feel great when you are there. at checkout time they direct you to the shortest line and help you load groceries onto the counter. there is also assistance available to load groceries into your car. once i asked i there was anymore of an item i could not find and after the gentleman helped me locate it and i thanked him he thanked ME for asking and apologized it wasn't where it was labeled. a side bonus is that they have coffee for you to drink while you shop. the seafood counter guys are very nice and patient. you can call in your order ahead of time and they will have it ready for you. another time i called in to ask if there was anymore ahi tuna left and the person at seafood was very honest stating none that he would sell because it was not great. i appreciated that. prices are more expensive and i do not shop for everything here but when i think of LG sunset foods it is all positive thoughts. read more

How excited can you possibly be about a grocery store right?? Well, I'm five stars excited! What a wonderful store. I went here for the first time this morning. The store is so well kept and neat. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and the selection of ready made items is really great. Many choices of hot prepared soups and foods and an abundance of salads and dips. I literally just stared at all the food options for a good 45 minutes. They also have a baked goods section, that i tried not to stare at for too long on this trip but I'll be back. They of course have a very fresh looking salad bar that was reasonably priced for the items that were available on the bar. My favorite was the trail mix bar. You read that correctly TRAIL MIX BAR! Its has all kinds of options: dried fruit, pretzels, nut mixes really it's nice really nice. The price point for things is on the higher end, I'm not certain I would go here for daily items, but for specialty things and prepared foods I think this will be my new go too. Yep - this place is really that good. From the bakery to the prepared food section to the meat department, everything is top notch. Yeah, it's a little on the expensive side, so I knocked off a star. This is the most under rated wonderful grocer of its kind in our neighborhood. I had the pleasure of working NB for 20 years so hardly a week went by when I wasn't at Sunset shopping. This diverse product grocer which meets the wants and criteria of so many is why I cant stop going. They're fresh prepared meals are absolutely delicious and healthy, their meat department is superior to even a local butcher. Deli, fruits, veggies and more make shopping here a great habit. I just noticed a few negative reviews of Sunset on Aptikisac in Long Grove. I am a loyal shopper here - and it is by far the best grocery store I have ever been in. One of the things I love the most is the really fresh produce - it all lasts longer than any other store in the area. Yes, at times you may pay a bit more - but the quality surpasses the cost. I'm only basing this review on the sushi bar, which was once "eh" by supermarket standards, but is now pretty bad. Worse, the sushi place less than a half mile from Sunset, AO Sushi, is actually CHEAPER than Sunset and it's REAL sushi. That confounds me. When you get supermarket sushi, you expect a major downgrade in exchange for value, but that it's actually more expensive than AO Sushi AND the portion sizes are smaller, is simply amazing. So I'm officially done getting sushi at Sunset unless they slash prices by about 50%. read more

I placed a catering order here for a baby shower this past weekend. We ordered chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad, fruit salad and a bunch of rolls and mini croissants for people to make sandwiches. Sunset has the best chicken salad around, no question, and people really loved the other salads as well. They even lent me baskets to put the rolls in which made for a beautiful presentation! The only thing that was wrong is that they forgot to give me the veggie trays that I had ordered - no big deal since we had more than enough food without them. The people in the deli department were very easy to work with and I would definitely go back here for catering a party! read more

I agree with my friends, who are not fans of Sunset. This store is for the person who does not mind having the wool pulled over their eyes when they pay Sunset 40% or more mark up for the SAME product they could find at any other grocery store. Really, does the store think we won't notice? I just can't figure out where the extra profit is going either, the store hardly looks finished. Their produce goes bad within 48 hours, the bakery items mold and go stale after a day. I avoid this store except for emergencies. I am happy to drive a little further for the brand new Whole Foods in Kildeer or continue shopping at Fresh Market, especially for their nice bakery. read more

I love the fact that the LG store is right around the corner from my house. Sunset has excellent bakery and "homemade" items, and I buy my meats from them because no one around compares. Their pork and steak are hard to match. Some of their prices are higher than the competing stores around them, but the convenience and service outweigh the negative here. There produce and meat selections are always top notch. They have some unique items I previously had to travel to Whole Foods for, and I like that they have lots of organic, hormone/antibiotic free choices. Overall, it is a great store. I would love to see them be a little more involved in the local communities though. read more

This grocery store has it all, fresh fish, meats and produce. They have items you won't find anywhere else and their deli has endless possibilities if you don't feel like cooking. There are many things I love about this store. I find the customer service (especially the fish department) great and I can find items here I can't find elsewhere. I also really appreciate that they'll load your car if you ask--great in the winter! I took off a star because the bakery items are really not up to the standard of the rest of the store. Sunset Foods Long Grove: It has been years since I've had such a wonderful time shopping at the grocery store. I grew up in Chicago and worked at a Certified store and ever since those days when we knew customers by name and chatted at the check out, I have missed the neighborly feel of the grocery store. Sunset Foods in Long Grove fills the void in our neighborhood for a wonderful shopping experience. It is filled with people who care about their customers. Both managers Ron and Dago ALWAYS greet me and ask about my day with a smile on their face. Allen ALWAYS helps me in the fruit and vegetable department and always leaves me with something to think about throughout the day that teaches me something positive about life. Juana and Jyoti, by day, and Susan by night, are a pleasure at the checkout. They always make my day with their efficient yet very caring natures...always asking about my kids, my mom, and Susan always asks about my mother in law who is in the nursing home. John the carrot-top college boy is so mannerly and top-notch. His manners at the "packing station" are a credit to him and to his parents who raised him. And Marisella in floral has saved me from getting my head chopped off a couple times now for not ordering father-daughter dance flowers ahead of time (note: I am not a father or a daughter in this case) or turn-about flowers (again, not me going to the dance) She in record time pulled together beautiful corsages and lapel flowers. Her service is top notch and very polite. Thank you for bringing Ron, Dago, Juana, Jyoti, Susan, Allen, John, and Marisella into our lives along with the rest of all the wonderful people at Sunset that have given me back my grocery store experience of my childhood. Sunset in Long Grove is great! There would be no way that Sunset would not give money back for a bad item, especially with the receipt. Their policy is customer service which shows - from the friendly deli, produce,checkers, bakery people to anyone walking around the store. Every time I am there I am greeted by many and asked if I need assistance. This includes the manager, never have I been to a store where the manager knows many of his customers by name and is involved on the store floor. He greets customers, finds products (walks you to the product, doesn't just tell you what aisle like other stores close by) and checks out when its crowded. He is always smiling and pleasant even when customers are not. (I have witnessed) Another thing I love about Sunset is you know where your groceries come from, especially the produce, which is important to me.
