I regularly shop at Sunset Foods Northbrook. I love the guys in the fish department. I never buy my fish anywhere else. The shrimps are made fresh daily & are always delicious. Years ago, I was part of a grocery co-op. A member priced Dominick's, Jewel and Sunset and found that the prices were a wash: some items higher, some on sale, etc., but the prices on the list she had ended up about the same at all three stores. So I decided the Sunset service model was most helpful to me. Later, after developing rheumatoid arthritis, the deposit-groceries-in-your-car service was just wonderful. The service people are unfailingly alert to help and often go out of their way to find an item or show me where it is. Or something not on the shelf I can order if it's important enough to me. They are also receptive to suggestions. Sure, things could be a wee bit brighter or aisles wider, but I like the comfy feel of being in a neighborhood store which knows its patrons, welcomes us and caters to our wishes. If there is a problem their management team address and resolves it quickly and professionally. If I have a suggestion it is always welcome. The selection of food is always fresh. When I first moved to Northbrook, Sunset was in it's old location and I just didn't get it - why did all my neighbors wax poetically about this place with the crazy layout? Well, years later I get it. The layout improved some when it moved (it's still kinda confusing), but it isn't about where things are or what the specials are...it's all about service. Businesses could learn a thing or two by visiting this place. Every now and then I go to Jewel or Whole Foods and it's just not the same. With a short list of items I can get in and out in 15-20 minutes, and I didn't have to bag my own groceries (frankly, I suck at bagging - why doesn't Jewel understand that?). Sure the way they empty your cart at the checkout is nice, but what's even nicer is the fact that they have enough checkout aisles open to have no lines. And if they don't, a manager will open a new one for you and check you out themselves. Impressive. I beg you to find a faster, more pleasant experience when grocery shopping. Sunset Foods is definitely the best place to do your grocery shopping! I usually go once a week and I always pick up delicious prepared salads or ready-made meal items. I highly recommend their tuna salads. They have several to choose from and each one is extremely tasty. All of the employees are extremely helpful and courteous. They load your groceries on to the belt and even give you the option of driving to the side of the building and having them load your purchases into the car; which is very helpful, especially when you have heavy items and young kids. I have been shopping at Sunset for years, but today I think one of the employees went above and beyond. I have to share my wonderful experience with you. This afternoon I was looking for a particular frozen dessert. I've purchased it before from Sunset, but didn't see any on the shelf. Before I could even turn around to ask for help, a nice young man apporached me and asked if I needed assistance. I inquired about the item, he offered to look in back. He came back out to say they didn't have any in the back, but would be expecting a shipment in soon. I also asked if he knew if the dessert came in other flavors. He excused himself one more time and went to the back. He came out a couple of minutes later to say that there were other flavors (and he listed them) but they don't carry them yet, but he'd be happy to order some in if I was interested. He asked me to stop at the customer service desk and give them my contact info and they would call when the item arrived. Now that is what I call customer service! read more

Great Customer service, Fruit & vegetable section is always fresh & clean. They stock mostly everything you can think of. Along with emptying your cart and loading up your groceries in your car what else could you think of that they dont deliver? I get fresh flowers every week, and the cakes are always a hit. They just opened their Grille and its fantastic :) I got a burger and it was juicy and you can modify it to what you want. Came with chips and a pickle. Good for lunch! They have a kids menu that reasonably priced and high chairs for the kiddos. Good place to stop if you want lunch/dinner and do some grocery shopping. read more

I was so impressed with Sunset today. I ordered much of my Thanksgiving dinner there and the whole process was a good experience. The person who took my order in the catering department last week was quite pleasant, which has not always been the case in the past. Today, when I went to pick up my order, they were quite organized. They had plenty of help on hand and had a great system in place. I will definitely order again! read more

Tonight I was astonished by the impoliteness of a male worker named Mitch. While checking out, the cashier and Mitch asked about the university I attend, prompted by the university's shirt I was wearing. Mitch asked about my major and upon telling him, he snickered and said, as serious as cancer, "That's a bad idea." Mitch then proceeded to tell me about the people he knew who have terrible jobs or no job because they studied that major. I left without another word. I held Sunset Foods to a higher standard of customer service, but Mitch was absolutely rude and insulting. He was equally rude to the customer in front of me who was from out of state and trying to buy alcohol, unaware of their policy. I will not be back to shop again. read more

Sunset Foods is an outstanding grocery store. I have lived in Northbrook since the late 1960s. It has been our go to grocery store all that time. The quality, service and selection are tops. Some say pricing is too high. I find their prices very competitive, particularly when you consider the quality of the fruit and vegetables Sunset carries. read more

I love Sunset....one person commented about walking 100 yards to his car....not difficult when you're young, but when it's 20 degrees and snowing outside and you're worried about falling, you would really appreciate it. We older folks love the service....bending down to get pop out of the bottom of the cart is difficult for us. I especially love that when there's line, they get everyone up front to check out. I disagree about the produce....I always find it fresh. It's nice to ask a worker there about which apples, oranges, etc are the best and get an honest answer. I don't buy paper towels, etc., there, of course. Their meat and deli counters are awesome. read more

Great service, produce, salad bar, fish counter, meat counter, deli. Not so great...floors should be mopped more often, many items are past expiration date, layout difficult to maneuver as traffic is bottlenecked in several locations. But still recommend it highly. read more

My family has been going to Sunset Foods since it opened when my dad was a boy. Of all the times we've gone there, there has never been a time when we received bad service. They recently added a restaurant section in the grocery store. I highly recommend their breakfast burritos and fish sandwiches. All the workers are very sweet and there is rarely a long line anywhere in the store, except occasionally in the produce section. They have soups, a deli, and a fresh fish bar. It is a very good place to go for groceries. read more

Just wanted to let everybody out there that our Bakery Dept. in Northbrook is just wonderful. They went out of their way to make my granddaughters 1St birthday a huge success. My daughter in law wanted the Minnie Mouse theme, do to copyright laws, it could be done with some adjustments. Sergio drew Minnie Mouse with one smaller ear, hand drew the whole picture.
