I've never been to a grocery store that had this level of customer service. They hand you a cart when you walk in, they weigh and tag your produce for you, they unload your cart and will even load the bags into your car. Their selection is good, but I wouldn't describe it as amazing. I can find most of what I'm looking for at Sunset, but sometimes I find I have to go to Dominick's or Jewel for a specialty item or two. Produce: Excellent quality, but nothing unusual or exotic... Meat: Very good quality, but overpriced. I prefer to spend the same or less for equal or better meat at Reagan Meats or Whole Foods. Fish: I think it mainly arrives frozen and is thawed. On par with fish from any grocery store. Bread/Bakery: I NEVER buy breads from their self-serve bins because idiot Northbrook moms let their disgusting little brats paw over every bagel in the bin. Gross! Cheese: Not as good as Whole Foods but way above average for a grocery store! Overall a very good grocery with outstanding customer service. read more

I sort of have a love-hate relationship with the one in Northbrook but do find myself shopping there more and more over the years - thus the positive ratings. Very easy to shop and front end is always well staffing making for fast check out. Certain assortments like apples are fabulous offering tremendous variety and freshness. Items are sold here like local bagels and coffee cake that are excellent and can't be gotten anywhere else. On the other hand crazy expensive. While it's a bit unfair to compare to Costco I think it's illustrative that for the price of one lamb shoulder chop here - USA sources which tastes better than Australia which Costco offers - you can get four or five at Costco. Sunset Foods is "Whole Foods" with high quality personal service and (generally) lower prices. Here's a few thoughts about shopping there: The deli is quite large with a fantastic selection of meats, cheeses and prepared dishes. One of the best grocery delis around - especially in the face of declining quality and service at the chains. I agree with the Yelper that advised not to buy breads from the bins - I've seen kids pawing around in them too. I don't care of parents spoil their kids - but when it involves a kid licking a roll and putting it back in the bin, it's NOT "cute" at all. Teach your kids RESPECT for others too, please! I think they have an excellent fish selection at mostly reasonable prices. Love their scrod. Big thumbs up here. Robust selection of fruits and veggies. Meat section is OK, but I'll shop the chains instead, preferring to save some money without sacrificing much quality. Take some time and check out their condiments and refrigerated foods. Often there are items that are not typically found at other grocery stores. For example, they have a wide selection of mustards and prepared sauces. Nice wine and liquor offering. They also seem to be supportive of the community, which in my mind is always a plus. Always a good experience shopping here - try Sunset out! read more

Very good deli, wonderful fresh meat and fish. Produce department can slow you down with the old-fashioned habit of having things weighed in the department instead of at the register. Food here is no bargain-you'll save more at Jewel or Costco. You come for the quality. I won't buy brisket anywhere else. This store is a better choice to shop at than the one in Highland Park as aisles and parking lot are more spacious. I've been a Sunset customer for probably 20 years. Great service, great product selection. They've offered to order products for me that they don't normally carry. Once they gave me the wrong order, and they delivered the right order to my house within 30 minutes so I could feed my young children. They ran Byerly's out of town because their service was so good it was difficult to compete. I think Sunset is a great family owned business that puts the customer first. With recent expansion, I'm wondering if they are stretching a bit too much. Some cracks appearing in the way they execute: new employees don't seem to know their products. The experienced workers in the fish department can advise and counsel with knowledge; the new guys often confuse products and can't answer questions, or give incorrect information. The long-term workers are amazing in their charisma and recognition of customers. . . they are knowledgable, humorous, warm, and inviting. But the new folks need more development and coaching so they can answer questions accurately and do their jobs to the high standard Sunset is known for. Some employees stocking the aisles can't answer questions, but others are just great. . .so a little inconsistency. Hope Sunset can work through these growing pains, because it is really an amazing store. The prices are not bargain-basement, but the quality for select items and custom products is so high that I always go out of my way to go there. read more

I went to this Sunset Foods location for the first time today. I am a regular at the Lake Forest location. Northbrook pales in comparison with Lake Forest. The interior of this store appears to be worn. I was at the store on a Monday at around 1:30 PM, and it was packed. There apparently were not enough employees to keep up. The checkout lines were long and more reminiscent of Jewel-Osco than the Sunset Foods I know. I was also taken aback by the fact that I needed to unload my own groceries onto the checkout counter. Northbrook's hidden gem in the grocery world. Sunset is a unique store that stocks special items. My favorite is the Acapulco tuna salad absolutely delicious. You can eat it with bread or crackers fabulous for picnics and healthy snacking. To be honest with you that is the reason I come here. The bakery has inciting bread selections. Fine selection of premium vegetables and ripe fruit. Many gourmet food items and catering service. Old fashioned customer service is a treat many times you can pull up to the store and workers will load your car. Very friendly store with a small town feeling. I have shopped here for 15 years and it has steadily declined over the last 5 years. The deli staff is nothing short of bitchy and rude. Especially Donna- that woman needs to be kept in the back and should not interface with the public- she is plain rude and thinks nothing of turning her back on customers. This is based on multiple experiences with her. The place is grossly overpriced, the cashiers and baggers are on their cell phones while you are trying to get through the check out process... why are they even allowed to have their phones out????? The managers at this location are more than rude. My girlfiend, her mother, and I went into sunset to pick up some beer and dessert for our dinner. Seeing as how her mother paid for dinner, i wanted to pay for our items at sunset, however, after presenting my i.d. to the cashier, my i.d. Was handed to a woman who inspected it and walked away. When asking where she went with my i.d., the cashier bluntly stated that they had to get approval to sell me alcohol. Another manager walked over, i.d. In hand, and told me not to get upset, and that they would not be selling me alcohol. I am 22 years old, i work as a cashier at whole foods and card people for alcohol all day, and was with my girlfriend and her mom, does it seem like i would have a fake? I was then told that it was because i have an out of state i.d., and upon requesting more infirmation on why this was an issue, the manager rolled his eyes at me and continued to refuse to sell me the beer. After being embarrassed in front of my company, and not being able to purchase beer, i had to wait for the manager to look over my i.d. once again and hesitantly return it to me, as if he contemplated not giving it back. Last time i checked, an i.d from another state is still legal, and refusing to sell someone alcohol based on looking young and not on their LEGAL age is DISCRIMINATION. I try to avoid this place as much as possible even though I live three minutes away. It may only be six times a year that I shop here. The prices are OUTRAGEOUS and the employees are nothing to rave about. You know you're in grocery store hell when you're here on a busy afternoon surrounded by all the snobby north shore debutantes pushing their way in front of you without so much as an "excuse me." I'm not married to a particular grocery store chain. If I was married to Sunset I would recommend couples counseling. I used to really enjoy Sunset. I'm not sure if it's that the other stores are either new and different and old ones improved...or, if Sunset has dropped its game a couple of notches. Today, I had a problem that I'm having more and more in any of the Sunset Stores and that's out of stock items. It really does seem like they don't have stuff in stock quite often and that didn't used to be the problem. The other thing that happened was a long line at produce to have someone weigh your produce and then we go stand in another line to check out. I don't get it. Now, if the produce person suggested products or did anything other than weigh and price maybe I would understand this hassle. Sunset badly needs to catch up. The other stores have figured out the value of customer service and that was once a strong suit for Sunset. The folks are still very nice at Sunset....the issues seem to be staffing, inventory and price accuracy which seems a corporate issue to me. read more

I have a special fondness for Sunset. Their customer service is beyond belief--I have cancer in my bones, and can't really lug heavy grocery bags around--I truly appreciate their free drive up service. The staff there is so friendly and helpful, as well. My favorite Sunset story is this: a few years ago I went on a huge grocery run, and realized at checkout that I had forgotten my checkbook. Instead of bailing on $200 worth of groceries, they let me walk out ...with an IOU !!! Unbelievable! Too expensive, nothing special, and rude staff. I am still trying to figure out what is so special about Sunset Foods?? Yes, they do have some good food options, but what store doesn't these days. For a specialty grocery store, I am a much bigger fan of Fresh Market in Wilmette. The two stars are for the full service treatment you receive at checkout. I admit, I am sometimes too lazy to put my own groceries on the conveyor belt, and yes, I hate putting groceries in my car. Carrying groceries does suck. The best grocery store you will probably ever find yourself in. They have an amazing selection of everything. If they don't have something, you can probably ask them to get it for you. The deli is the best I have ever seen. Ming's Pot Sticker's are very pricey ($1.60/per) but delish. They also have homemade pastas, soups, and a great bakery. Their salad bar is huge and have great produce and seafood. The new store has been open for a few years and they have an expanded wine selection, but as been said previously, don't go here looking for beer. Meat Dept - Adrian is wonderful - professional, helpful and pleasing. The Dept manager and assistant are great as well. Fish Dept - the people are all nice and welcoming. Bring in more wild caught fish rather than the lake. Prices are not compatible, unless on sale. Freda, the demonstrating / deli person (Allen too) are very nice, pleasant, helpful and customer service savvy. I have stopped buying at the deli / catering 18-24 months ago, by far too expensive! to say the least. I try to shop only items that are on sale (weekly ad) otherwise, just can't afford. Sunset is a North Shore institution that lives up to its name. When I am off traveling the country, I get cravings for sunset's delectable prepared salads (hearts of palm salad, Dijon shrimp, roasted root vegetables to name a few--- mac and cheese is also great if you are looking to clog an artery). The person who gave them 1 star has obviously never been to the deli area. It's excellent, mostly healthy food, prepared and ready to eat. I have to admit, when I think of Sunset, I get nostalgic. I grew up with it. On the many days of the week my Mom would forget to pack a lunch, I got sunset delivered to the school office. Spring/summer months with all the baseball and softball uniforms running around? The OLD location? super friendly bag checkers? The typical (i love to hate you) north shore primadonnas yapping on their cellphone while yelling at their kids to stop running around like the little maniacs they are? It makes me miss home. I love Sunset! Without their ready made, home cooked massively long deli counter, I would be living on Cup Noodles and and anything I could fit in my mircowave. For those who are hard-of-cooking Sunset is the best place. Whole Foods have a better selection of food and Trader Joes has better prices, but it's right inbetween with a pretty good selection and pretty good prices. Staff are always friendly and they have a pick up service where you can pull up your car and they load your groceries for you! I use that a lot. read more

Since going out to eat with 5 children (4 under 4 years old) is hard and my brothers-in-law didn't want to cook every night, I ordered some meals from the catering menu at Northbrook. Coming from California, I only had various online reviews (including Yelp) to guide me in my decision but there were no comments on the catering menus. So here is a review on the catering menus. There were hits and misses during the whole process but overall, the pluses outweighed the minuses. Here are my impressions: 1. Ordering process - the website was a bit clunky but the store called to confirm the order the next day. 2. Excellent quality of food. The food was all precooked and ready to pop into the oven. There was no mushy overcooked goo here. The green beans with almonds were crispy, even after reheating. The only complaints were that the coq au vin wasn't really coq au vin - it was just braised chicken breasts - and the beef bourguignon listed on the website was really beef stroganoff. The quality of the food, however, was good. It just wasn't as described. 3. And as everyone has said, service. When we picked up our food, our order was missing a spinach salad, grilled vegetables, and salad dressing. We had to wait about 30 minutes for the confusion to be cleared up. They could not fill our order of spinach salad and salad dressing because the kitchen staff had gone home for the day. But they provided us with alternate salads. In addition, they comped us on these substitute salads as well as the grilled vegetable. In addition, they took extra off of our total order for the inconvenience. If I was looking for good quality take-out meals in the Northbrook area, I would definitely use Sunset foods again. read more

I love Sunset Foods' tuna salad and egg salad. That is the reason I went there. So great and tasty! I also got some kale salad which was also delish! They have a great selection of gluten free and organic food. I was a little shocked at how expensive their organic produce was. I get lunch at Sunset Food's deli one or two times a week. I've been here for a full grocery shopping trip only a handful of times. I think Sunset takes more care than Jewel when it comes to selecting their brands and stocking their perishables (produce, deli, meat, seafood) but the place is cramped and feels just a scosche less clean than a Whole Foods or Jewel. The floor design is also very cattywampus which makes navigating and finding what you want very difficult. However, the cooked foods and bakery are really good and the prices are reasonable so it's 50/50. I just can't see coming here every week for groceries. read more

I've been going to Sunset Foods for 30 years now. They have always been my go to for shopping. They have things that you can only get in Europe. French butter! I love that. Fish department is excellent. Meats are of high quality. Deli has a great selection. Sunset potato salad is my favorite. Fruit and vegetable selection is good. A little pricey. I don't want to do this but they made a major f* up with the hot soups. I bought a large container of what appeared to be (and was labeled as) vegetable barley. What I found when I got home to eat it was manhattan clam chowder with barley....BLEAH! I'm not a fan of fish soups and this was simply gross. NOrmally, they have the fish soups in the back of the store near the fish counter. I couldn't bring it back because it's too far away, so we ended up dumping it down the drain. What a pisser. That and the napa cabbage that I thought was $1.79 each was $1.79 a lb, what a shock that was! Oh well. Serves me right. Disappointed ordering and pick up at bakery counter. No one staffed there either time. Finally the associate arrives after I asked people in the deli if someone could help me. The girl arrives and is clueless as to answer my questions. She asked me what date it was on Saturday to pick up my order. Pick up day...again no one there. Deli people are frazzled. Sunset Foods is extremely overpriced. The fruits and vegetables are soaking wet and rot immediately. They used to have friendly helpful staff. Now, the customer service is poor and the managers at the service desk are surly and unhelpful. They stopped the double sale Wednesdays which was always good for elderly people who can't get out too often. I always have to fight for a price that was rung up incorrectly. Shop at Fresh Market in Palatine or Mariano's in Northfield, Fresh Farms in Wheeling...so many better stores. You screwed up, Northbrook! read more

I am done. Regardless that I live within walking distance I can not in good conscience shop at a store that is constantly defrauding their customers. Yet again, a sale item clearly marked is ringing up at a price more than is listed/advertised. Never is it the other way around at Sunset. It aggravates me to no end to have to pay, walk back to where the sale price is listed so I can bring it to the customer service desk to once again get a refund. Most grocery stores compensate for this error but giving the item for free. Not Sunset. It's the least they can do for wasting my time and correcting the error that their staff is incapable of correcting. At what point is this considered fraud? Perhaps a class action lawsuit is the only thing that will get them to pay attention to their pricing. read more
