Sunset Grill tries to present itself as an upscale World class destination dining experience, but with small town skills and attitude. First, the good parts. It about the most upscale place in town, I suppose, but there isn't much competition. The setting is fantastic, beautiful view over the valley with the red rock cliffs. A great mineral collection throughout the place if you walk around and see the displays, I guess from the guy who built the place. Next, the mediocre. The food was just OK. Not bad, but not great. I expected a lot more for the price. I had the raspberry duck which turned out to be an odd pairing of flavors. Dessert was excellent. The service was like most places in Utah, staffed by high school kids doing a part time job. They're nice and they try, but they just aren't trained to do a professional job. It's pretty tough to find professional wait staff who take pride in what they do in Utah. The bland. The wine list is thin at best, atrocious at worst. Stay away from the local Moab wines they really push, they're as horrible as they sound. Outside of that, the wine list was pretty thin. Fortunately, I always bring my own bottle when I'm dining in Utah (you pretty much have to a multitude of reasons) so I had something great to drink. They also told me on the phone that they don't take reservations, but it wasn't a busy night so we could get right in. We show up 20 minutes later and we had to wait a half hour. Was unsuccessful and pushed it away after 3 bites and had to subsist off the plain baked potato and soggy steamed vegetables. My boyfriend got a chicken dish which was at best, mediocre. While the staff was super friendly, they didn't know much about the wines on the list, which were limited to mostly local wineries. Spoiler alert: Moab is not known for its wines for a reason. I hate to give low ratings to restaurants, but I felt I had to because: It took 3 hrs from the time we waited for a table to finishing the meal on a Wednesday night. Had the meals be good we'd be happy, but it wasn't at all, it was a waste of 3 hrs. Waiter was super slow with everything, he had his tables in the same room but he kept disappearing for long time before he comes out and bring a whole big tray of dishes and distributed them out to tables. The appetizer-tomatoes bruschetta, wow, it was saggy breads served with cold canned tomatoes sauce with some shredded cheese on top, not even at home I'd eat this. Main dishes were eh..., nothing much to say. The best thing had to be the dessert, really good chocolate souffle. But this is a restaurant not a dessert shop. And they are pricey. Found this place by chance and had a great experience. Its the perfect place to watch the sunset and enjoy a great meal. The server was polite and very professional even despite the fact we wanted to linger around a bit after we finished eating/paying. This is a really nice place. We ate dinner on the grass patio overlooking the town of Moab. Watched the sunset behind the mountains and enjoyed some good wine and excellent food. Found this gem high in the hill just by chance while staying in Moab for one night. A bit pricey but the food was very good and our server and the hostess were very friendly. We chose to eat inside for faster seating so we could get to The Arches NP for sunset. Lots of people come to this restaurant for sunset. The view even from inside was awesome. I'd go here again. Dined here in October 2019 while in town for the Rock Climbing Festival. Gorgeous sunset views, there is a window view at every seat. Outstanding and attentive waitstaff service. But the food was okay. I ordered the Wild Ahi Tuna and it was a 1.25-inch thick slab of tuna that was lightly grilled. It tasted wonderful but I didn't care for the mushroom sauce or the vegetables that accompanied the meal. I guess I will always prefer my seafood with either a Hawaiian or Asian flair. This restaurant is amazing. We didn't read reviews prior to going, and looking back on them now I think it's important to realize that many of the bad reviews are left by picky, impatient, entitled travelers who expect things to operate on their schedule. This restaurant has an amazing view of Moab that we didn't get to experience anywhere else. It gives you a whole new perspective. They also have a lot of great reading and history you can check out in their menu. It was so great to learn about the building itself as well as the current family that runs it. Everyone was so incredibly friendly! Our food was delicious! We ordered trout, linguini Olivia, and shrimp scampi. All were cooked perfectly and SO delicious. The dessert options were amazing as well! You can even text them to get a shuttle ride up and back if you'd like to avoid driving. It was an amazing convenience not offered by anywhere I've ever been. My advice to people looking to go here is to take a breath and enjoy the beauty! I feel compelled to write a review to hopefully help others in the future. I thought i had seen decent reviews but now back on yelp i may have not seen the entire picture. I can forgo lack of perfect service due to covid but the food wasn't even "good" let alone what I'd expect at this price range. The "linguini olivia" was missing the crab and had no lemon taste as advertised with a lemon cream sauce. For $36, entrees should at least be as advertised. The cockroaches crawling on the railing and under our feet was disgusting. The table next to us was trying to step on them. When we decided to get married out here 5 years later, Sunset Grille was a no brainer to us to have our reception there. Planning was a breeze - we worked with Hailee to dial in our plans. Paid per plate with apps/deserts included, tables and linens and a bar setup outside in out spot as well. We had reserved the grassy patio area outside and it is beautiful out there overlooking the town of Moab. Family and friends were amazed at the view. Hailee helped with some last minute planning and then Wendell took over. He was above and beyond amazing! Even gave a brief overview of history of the restaurant and each guest commented on how great he was! Restaurant had some awesome history and there is a view from just about anywhere. Let Me start out by saying that this place has an amazing view, friendly waitstaff and is a historical landmark of Moab. We loved the vibe of this restaurant and all the photos and memorabilia. We just arrived to Moab and we're looking for a fine dining experience to end our last vacation night and the sunset grill looked like a no-brainer--after seeing the location and menu. We arrived and had to wait 30 minutes for a table--but all was okay because we got to watch the sunset from their inviting yard that overlooks the town and enjoyed some water they provided. Once we were seated at the table we were greeted by our sweet, and friendly waitress who took our drink order and delivered them reasonably fast. For dinner we decided on the $19 escargot appetizer and we're goi g to split a $37 New York strip steak. We placed our order and received our side salads and an adorable mini loaf of bread (yum!). We finished and waited for a while for our appetizer to come out--our waitress took notice and apologized about it, and told us that it would come out with the steak due to a kitchen error (it happens). We were cool with it, we understand how tough a kitchen can be. Our dinner arrived and they were nice enough to split our steak and sides onto separate plates so we didn't have to. Just at first glance the steak looked VERY thin, and I cut into it to see if it was med-rare like we ordered. It was all Grey, no pink in the middle and the steak was literally a centimeter thick. A little put-off, I tried the meat and I kid you not, it was a little tough, bland and lacked the $37 flavor I was expecting (it was comparable to a buffet style steak). Our waitress also asked us when she delivered the food, if we wanted any steak sauce for the meat--and we were thinking "uh no, why would we need sauce for a $37 steak? It should be bursting with flavor!" Not the case. I returned my steak to kitchen and just felt really bummed about the situation. I didn't even want them to remake it because I knew how disappointing the cut was. My partners steak was closer to med-rare, but STILL BLAND. Escargot was delicious. The steak sides; cooked vegetables and a whole roasted potato were also lacking flavor. Our waitress felt bad, and comped us 50% off the steak, which sort of made us feel a little better about the situation. All in all, we decided that this place felt like a fine-dining tourist trap. If I were to recommend this place to someone, it would only be for the view, the cool house-converted restaurant and to ONLY stop by for a drink and appetizer to watch the sunset over Moab. Edit: the more I scroll down and read the reviews for this restaurant, the worse I feel. WE WERE DUPED! I can't believe we didn't check Yelp before going to this place. I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH--don't get DUPED BY THIS PLACE! It seems like a good choice for a fine dining experience, but it's really NOT. Save your time and money and go somewhere else where you don't have to write a whole novel on Yelp afterwards about the sunset grill experience. It is a bit on the sweet side. The service was great. Our waitress did everything to accommodate us. But, we came for the Sunset, when we saw the sun set, it looked completely boring, so we left... Could anyone have told us to wait a bit... afterwards, when we were back on the road, the sunset was magnificent, all pinks and different shapes of clouds. Had heard good things about this restaurant, has great views. Food overall was acceptable, and service was good with the exception of upselling. The filet came with a baked potato. The upcharge to make it "loaded" was $5.95 for some bacon bits and a very small amount of cheese. The drink of the night was an Old Fashioned with "top shelf" liquor. The oil from the orange peel was so overpowering that it was the predominate taste. The rye? or bourbon? could have been bottom shelf and no one could have told the difference. The kicker was that the drink was priced at $24, double the price of the menu Old fashioned. $2 more for some simple syrup to attempt tp make it drinkable.
