After several attempts to find the folks at Sunset Grille on a good night, I am afraid they just are not up to it. There are several consistent disappointments, but my last (very last) visit is the subject of this review. This experience is indicative of the other times I hoped for better. Atmosphere: the restaurant has an overall dive vibe that makes it feel like an Oceanside spot. Charming. But, add a sticky floor and gummy table and they lose me. One server dropped a container of slaw on the floor and they left it there for at least 10 minutes become they deigned to (mostly) clean it up. Food: My husband's dish was wonderful. Mine, much less so. The blackened grouper I ordered arrived so undercooked it was cold in the middle. This was accompanied by a small baked potato covered with at least 1/2 a cup of margarine (couldn't possibly have been butter) even though I requested no butter. I didn't receive the salad I ordered, but upon seeing the one delivered to the table across from us, I was not saddened by this. Service: Indifferent does not begin to describe. The server had gobs of time to spend with other tables, but none to address our needs. She didn't bother to write down our order. Water glasses ran dry. Food arrived in the state i mentioned above. And, not once, were we checked on to have an opportunity to get my meal issue remedied. At the last, I put the nearly untouched plate at the end of the table in hopes of attracting attention. The manager walked past twice and said nothing. The server walked past once and said nothing. 10 minutes later, she pops around the corner to say, "I guess you don't like your grouper." Wow. As my husband had long since finished his meal, I asked for the check. She says "sure" and sauntered off. Her manager came over and told me he would take the entree off the check and asked if he could he get me some dessert. No. I was really interested in having DINNER! I left starving. If this was just one experience, I think I would give them another go. But, this was the 5th and last chance I'll be giving this train wreck of a dining establishment. I truly cannot believe they draw a crowd on the weekends. They must pour good drinks. But not water. They don't care if you have water. read more

The staff was nice and let us know as we came in that they are understaffed so the food would take longer than usual. I was already hungry but understand the shortage so it wasn't a problem and I appreciate that they were up front about it. Now for the food. I ordered the shrimp scampi. The sauce was so thin it ran through the pasta to the bottom of the plate like soup. As I made my way through the shrimp I found two that were stuck together, fused by a thicker portion of the sauce I now imagine must have not defrosted like the rest of it. I say defrosted because the only reason that shrimp would have stuck and that sauce been so watery is if it was frozen and more than likely a bit freezer burned. There were also bits of meat that should have caused me to stop eating. It wasn't shrimp and that's the only meat that was supposed to be in there. Upon looking at menus online again they had another plate that has chopped lobster in it. I don't know if they are mixing old plates up but it was a red flag I wish I listened to. I don't normally write reviews and use this app to read them. I should have just stopped eating as the red flags went off but I was pretty darn hungry by the time I got it. I didn't even make it home before that plate had my guts on a rollercoaster and I had to run into a gas station. I've since then been off and on the toilet and can't warn you enough to stay away from that plate. (I went with four other people and their food seemed fine so just the scampi) If you're looking to lose a quick five pounds that plate is for you! NO SOUP FOR YOU! Fourth of July! 14 of us had reservations, made on July 9, to have dinner and watch the fireworks. When we arrived, 7 of us had already been seated at a big table. When the rest of us arrived, we saw two tables for 4 near the big table. When we moved the tables together and closer to the big table, the manager came out telling us to put them back...he had to keep a close watch on his chairs! Right, I felt the same way. So I said maybe we should go elsewhere, and he yelled at us to just go then. We all cooled down, put the tables back, and sat down for dinner. He came out, smirking, and said, "Oh, so you're staying now?" I admit, I answered with a clip in my voice, " yes, we decided to stay." At that point, he turned red-faced and yelled at us all to leave! And right NOW! He lost hundreds of dollars in business, present and future, and the poor servers didn't get the accompanying tip. We went to another restaurant, Cody's, who welcomed us, even with the short notice, where we had a wonderful d. We are senior citizens, with all our kids and their spouses. We aren't in the habit of causing trouble. In fact, I just deleted the very good review I gave this restaurant only a little over a week ago. We had a blast at Cody's and watched the fireworks from the beach on the lake. So all told, it was a good night despite the glitch at Sunset Grille. Needless to say, we won't be back, and sadly, we cannot recommend the Sunset Grille to anyone, anytime. read more

Last night me and my girlfriend came here expecting a nice dinner. We ordered their smoked fish dip which was good but the crackers that were served were a seasoned long strip that were extremely over seasoned. We asked for saltine crackers instead and they said they didn't have any. We then later ended up ordering the Surf and Turf, and also the Mardi Gras. The surf and turf was cooked at a well done when medium was asked for, and the baked potato seemed rotten on one end. The shrimp and scallops that were served for the surf were good though. The Mardi Gras was a Cajun chicken served over fettuccini with tomatoes and mushrooms and a cream sauce. It was good as well just not my favorite. read more

For what it is, this place was good. First of all, you have to understand that this is really in the middle of central FL, which is the middle of nowhere. It looks like an RV on the side of the road (lakeside) and definitely qualifies as "hole in the wall" or "shanty". We ordered the konch chowder (red key west style), lobster bisque, garlic mussels & clams, lobster reuben, and fish francese. The soups were great - the bisque was creamy and flavorful and the chowder was nice and chunky. The mussels and clams were drowning in garlic and cream sauce, which was tasty but not healthy - and our server brought out rolls to sop up the sauce after we finished with the clams. The fish francese was also swimming in a butter sauce, but the flavor was good. The lobster reuben, while it sounded good, was ultimately not a good use of lobster - I'd have the lobster on the side and keep the sauerkraut and cheese sandwich as-is. Overall: a bit heavy with the creams and butters, but good. In a town where the "fancy" place is the Outback Steakhouse, this is a great little dive and we'll probably be back. Bonus: Since the local population is mostly retirees, it makes for some interesting people watching. As we ate lunch, we saw some elderly friends fly in on their sea plane, land in the water just off the dock of the restaurant, fumble with anchors and docking, and then carry all the shoes/purses of their women as they all trudged up the shore to have lunch on the patio. read more

We have a dinner club group that we pick a restaurant to go to every 2 weeks. We made reservation for a group of 14 for dinner July 5th 2024 at 5pm. The reservation were made 2 weeks in advance they had plenty of time to plan for our group. we arrived and were the only ones at the restaurant upon our arrival. Our group ordered some drinks and appetizers that did arrive in an appropriate time. We then placed our dinner orders nothing special just the basic items on the menu. ( Which by the way has been reduced quite a bit and is disappointing compared to the old menu.) it took close to 2 hours for us to receive all our meals and the first meals did start arriving until an hour after we ordered and they would come out 1 or 2 at a time with another long wait before any other orders would arrive. some of our group were done eating a good 30 minutes before all of our meals arrived. The saddest part of this is they were not busy all night, an hour into our group arriving and ordering there were only 8 other people in the restaurant. The sunset grill used to be a good go to place now I understand why people were questioning why were going there, and made the comment you have not been there recently...... We went there on Thanksgiving for the turkey dinner. OMG, it was awesome. For 3 of us, we had 1 and 1/2 turkeys with all the fixins, mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, salad, green beans, gravy, rolls, cranberry sauce, warm apple cobbler with whipped cream. We could not eat all that food but they box it up for you and you get to bring home all the left overs. They brought the whole roasted turkey to the table and you carved it yourself. They also will have a Christmas dinner if you're interested. You'll have a choice of ham or NY strip or stuffed flounder. Beats the hell out of cooking and cleaning at home. We had been to this location on a few occasions, generally with a party of 6 to 10. Every time there has been one or two drinks that were ordered and the waitress also tending the bar would come back and say we don't have that or they don't know how to make that. These are not rare requests they were rum runners or a whiskey sour. Our order took quite some time to arrive at the table but the fish tacos were delicious but wet. I'm thinking 4 times is enough in my opinion service needs to be more accurate when taking orders and perhaps hire a real bartender may help. It was very slow so being busy was not an issue, I believe there were only two tables of guest other than our table. Stopped for lunch mimosas on a Sunday and my hubby had the blackened grouper sandwich and I had the grouper Ruben. Both meals were fresh and service was on point! Rebecca was our server and she was very attentive. The owner walked out and was checking on tables and waitresses helped each other out and seemed to be working as a good team. Customer satisfaction here seems to be important. Highly recommend this spot for a laid back lake view and prices are reasonable. We will back. read more

This used to be our favorite hole-in-the-wall place. Everybody needs a favorite hole-in-the-wall place. But it is our favorite no more. It started several months ago. The gent we assumed was the owner or at least the manager, was suddenly nowhere to be seen. Waitresses came and went--only one has remained constant. At one point, two middle-aged men seemed to be in charge. They haven't been seen since the end of the summer but under their watch, food was often delayed half an hour to forty-five minutes without an over-abundance of customers. That bespeaks personnel problems. At Christmas time, we stopped in only to be told there was a very limited menu. Why? The waitress actually said, "We've run out of food." Restaurant 101: Plan ahead for supplies. I did my time as a short-order cook. Tonight, we arrived to be told they only had one physical menu left to give us. No matter, we know the menu by heart. Waitresses wandered in all directions but none seemed to find any table let along ours. Eventually, one took our drink order. One sip--yes, literally one sip--into my beverage and my wife's Coke, we give our order only to be told that they had no more of their house specialty--the very reason I went there tonight. This was just after five o'clock on a Saturday night. Again, they ran out of food! They didn't even have the class to waive the cost of our drinks so I paid ten-bucks for two sips, one for me and one for my wife. Customers, beware. I had the seared ahi tuna, which I thought was great. Was a little disappointed in the $3.50 side salad for how small it was (no cheese on it). The setting outside is beautiful. My mother had French onion soup, which was really good. Father had fish and chips which were heavily breaded. Slaw wasn't great. Well first off the waitress we had was very nice and friendly and had no problem with her. The food was ok but boring. My plate had a piece of salmon and a spoonful or two of yellow rice. Not much for 17 bucks. It tasted fine but so boring, not appetizing at all to look at. No veg or anything to at least make it look good. On top of that, two guys from the kitchen either went home or went to lunch and one of them took a pee in the bushes by my car, hey no big deal but it was in view of where I was sitting inside. This restaurant has big problems. It's easy to say, "we can't find staff," but in this case, I think the place is just broken. We waited 90 minutes for food on a Tuesday afternoon, and when the food finally came, it was cold and soggy. We had no utensils. When the waitress fi ally made an appearance, she tossed --literally-- plastic cutlery at us, and said as she passed, "we have no clean silverware so here's plastic." I got up from my chair and went I side to the barman, who went back into the service area and handed me the last steak knife in the bin. 20 minutes to get some glasses of water, one of which arrived cracked from top to bottom. The bathroom is dirty and there was a cloud of drain flies circling over the sink. We have been coming to this restaurant for years. In the last three months it has been just awful. Today was our last visit to the Sunset Grille, as we've decided life is too short for disappointing meals. read more

Hit it on an off time obviously. Only people in there. Ordered fish and chips after waiting almost 30 minutes for a waitress. They came out quickly, but were completely soggy, oily, greasy, and tasteless. The fries were OK. After peeling the batter off, the fish was mushy and not seasoned. We stopped in yesterday for lunch after an adventure hiking at Highlands Hammock about 15 minutes away. We wanted a place with outside dining and it was the only one that we found. I was so glad because the place was wonderful. The food was fabulous & Carri, our server was friendly & efficient. We started with appetizers - the Fish Dip & Calimari. I don't eat calimari but the dip was excellent. I had the blackened Grouper sandwich and it was one of the best I've had. Hubby had the Grouper Ruben and loved it. Our friends had the Fish Tacos and thought they were great which is saying a lot as she is an excellent chef herself. If you're ever in the area, this is a must! read more

What a delightful little spot! Our server, Allie (Ally?) was very patient and attentive for our party of nine, which was very much appreciated. The food was excellent, from the loaded fries and gator bites to the entrees. My fish and chips were tasty and crisp, and the tartar sauce was an excellent compliment. My only problem was that the food took a little while to come out, but they did bring out everyone's food together, which is a feat considering how many of us there were. I enjoyed my meal here, and if we're ever in the neighborhood again, I'm thinking we'll be seeing Sunset Grille again. read more
